Background: This study focuses on the fabrication and characterization of quasi-hemispherical Cd0.9Zn0.1Te (CZT) detector for gamma-ray spectroscopy applications, aiming to contribute to advancements in radiation measurement and research. Materials and Methods: A CZT ingot was grown using the vertical Bridgman technique, followed by proper fabrication processes including wafering, polishing, chemical etching, electrode deposition, and passivation. Response properties were evaluated under various external bias voltages using gamma-ray sources such as Co-57, Ba-133, and Cs-137. Results and Discussion: The fabricated quasi-hemispherical CZT detector demonstrated sufficient response properties across a wide range of gamma-ray energies, with sufficient energy resolution and peak distinguishability. Higher external bias voltages led to improved performance in terms of energy resolution and peak shape. However, further improvements in defect properties are necessary to enhance detector performance under low bias conditions. Conclusion: This study underscores the efficacy of quasi-hemispherical CZT detector for gamma-ray spectroscopy, providing valuable insights for enhancing their capabilities in radiation research field.

Solar power is being spotlighted recently as a new energy source due to environmental problems and applications of solar power to curved structures are increasing. Solar panels installed on curved surfaces have different efficiencies depending on its position and the efficient positioning of solar panels plays a critical role in the design of solar power generation systems. In this study, the changing characteristics of solar irradiance were analyzed for hemispherical dome with a large curvature and the positioning of solar panels that can efficiently utilize solar energy was investigated. With an icosahedron-based hemispherical dome consisting of triangular elements as target model, a program for calculating solar irradiance using a normal vector of the solar module on each face was developed. Furthermore, the change of solar irradiance according to the sun's path was analyzed by time and season, and its effects on shades were also examined. From the analysis results, the effective positioning could be determined on the basis of the efficiency of the solar panels installed on the dome surfaces on solar irradiance.

A spectral measurement system for reflection and transmission properties by using an optical fiber and an ellipsoidal mirror was newly developed. The hemispherical reflectance and transmittance spectra of several heating resisting ceramics materials were measured from visible to middle infrared region. The directional characteristics of reflection and transmission were also investigated in consideration of the absorptance. The measured data were analyzed by using a four flux model of radiation transfer, The radiation properties could be estimated by the obtained scattering and absorption coefficient spectra.
Measured radiative heat fluxes on the furnace exit plane of a heavy duty power boiler of steam output 1650 T/h are discussed. A high-ash pulverized bituminous coal was used. Such measurements are necessary to improve heat fluxes inside a steam boiler furnace was manufactured. An extra small heat radiation sensor was placed in the water cooled head of the probe. The sensor had no direct contact with furnace gases and measured only the radiant energy. There was no exposure to convective heat transfer. With the radiometric probe, one can obtain a spherical indicatrix of radiation intensity as well as hemispherical radiative heat flux incident on any surface passing through a measuring point inside the furnace. Thus, the quantity of radiation energy, passing through the furnace exit plane, to the convective heating surfaces and the quantity of radiation energy going in the opposite direction were measured. A formula for relative radiative heat flux on the furnace exit plane has been proposed.

We present results of room-temperature characterization of lithographically manufactured antenna-coupled NbN micro-bolometers. The bolometers are assembled together with a hyper-hemispherical Si lens to couple the incident radiation to the bolometer from the back-side of the substrate. The bolometers are designed to operate at 300~1,000 GHz and they are characterized at 321~782 GHz. Radiation patterns are measured at 321 GHz, 400 GHz, 654 GHz, and at 782 GHz. The frequency dependency of the beamwidth is studied with several azimuthal beam profile measurements at 321~500 GHz.

The effects of a directionally emitting and reflecting dielectric surface on the wall heat flux and medium temperature distribution are studied. The system is an infinite square duct enclosing an absorbing and emitting medium. The emissivity and reflectivity of opaque and gray wall vary with direction. Combined effect of conductive and radiative heat transfer is analyzed using finite difference and the direct discrete-ordinates method. The parameters under study are conduction to radiation parameter, optical depth, refractive index ratio. The results with directional and diffuse properties deviate each other when the conduction to radiation parameter is less than around 0.01. The wall heat flux differs fur optical thickness less than around 0.1. However, the medium temperature profiles differ for optical thickness greater than around 1. Deviations from diffuse property calculations are larger for hot wall with directional property than cold wall with directional property. As n increases from 1.5, the trend changes are observed fur refractive index ratio about n=6.10
Stereotactic radiosurgery is one of the most sophisticated forms of modern advanced radiation therapy. Unlike conventional fractionated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery uses a high dose of radiation with steep gradient precisely delivered to target lesions. Lars Leksell presented the principle of radiosurgery in 1951. Gamma Knife® (GK) is the first radiosurgery device used in clinics, and the first patient was treated in the winter of 1967. The first GK unit had 179 cobalt 60 sources distributed on a hemispherical surface. A patient could move only in a single direction. Treatment planning was performed manually and took more than a day. The latest model, Gamma Knife® IconTM, shares the same principle but has many new dazzling characteristics. In this article, first, a brief history of radiosurgery was described. Then, the physical properties of modern radiosurgery machines and physicists' endeavors to assure the quality of radiosurgery were described. Intrinsic characteristics of modern radiosurgery devices such as small fields, steep dose distribution producing sharp penumbra, and multi-directionality of the beam were reviewed together with the techniques to assess the accuracy of these devices. The reference conditions and principles of GK dosimetry given in the most recent international standard protocol, International Atomic Energy Agency TRS 483, were shortly reviewed, and several points needing careful revisions were highlighted. Understanding the principles and physics of radiosurgery will be helpful for modern medical physicists.

Natural killer (NK) cells play a crucial role in combating infections and tumors. However, their therapeutic application in solid tumors is hindered by challenges, such as limited lifespan, tumor penetration, and delivery precision. Our research introduces a novel ultrasonic actuation technique to navigate NK cells more effectively in the vascular system, particularly at vessel bifurcations where targeted delivery is most problematic. We use a hemispherical ultrasonic transducer array that generates phase-modulated traveling waves, focusing on an ultrasound beam to steer NK cells using blood-flow dynamics and a focused acoustic field. This method enables the precise obstruction of non-target vessels and efficiently directs NK cells toward the tumor site. The simulation results offer insights into the behavior of NK cells under various conditions of cell size, radiation pressure, and fluid velocity, which inform the optimization of their trajectories and increase targeting efficiency. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of this ultrasonic approach for enhancing NK cell targeting, suggesting a potential leap forward in solid tumor immunotherapy. This study represents a significant step in NK cell therapeutic strategies, offering a viable solution to the existing limitations and promising enhancement of the efficacy of cancer treatments.
Several cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) crystals were fabricated into radiation detectors using methods that included slicing, dicing, lapping, polishing, and chemical etching. A wet passivation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) was then carried out on the Br-etched detectors. The Te-rich layer on the CZT surface was successfully compensated to the Te oxide layer, which was analyzed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data of both a Br-etched crystal and a passivated CZT crystals. We confirmed that passivation with NaOCl improved the transport property by analyzing the mobility-lifetime product and surface recombination velocity. The electrical and spectroscopic properties of large volume detectors were compared before and after passivation, and then the detectors were observed for a month. Both bar and quasi-hemispherical detectors show an enhancement in performance after passivation. Thus, we could identify the effect of NaOCl passivation on large volume CZT detectors.
The data integration with modeled predictions (DIMP) model is a promising inverse radiation transport method for solving the special nuclear material (SNM) holdup problem. Unlike previous methods, DIMP is a completely passive nondestructive assay technique that requires no initial assumptions regarding the source distribution or active measurement time. DIMP predicts the most probable source location and distribution through Bayesian inference and quasi-Newtonian optimization of predicted detector responses (using the adjoint transport solution) with measured responses. DIMP performs well with forward hemispherical collimation and unshielded measurements, but several considerations are required when using narrow-view collimated detectors. DIMP converged well to the correct source distribution as the number of synthetic responses increased. DIMP also performed well for the first experimental validation exercise after applying a collimation factor, and sufficiently reducing the source search volume's extent to prevent the optimizer from getting stuck in local minima. DIMP's simple point detector response function (DRF) is being improved to address coplanar false positive/negative responses, and an angular DRF is being considered for integration with the next version of DIMP to account for highly collimated responses. Overall, DIMP shows promise for solving the SNM holdup inverse problem, especially once an improved optimization algorithm is implemented.
