  • This paper described the general dynamic point for rotor design and the design procedure of low vibration blade. Generally, rotor rotating natural frequencies are determined to minimize hub loads, blade vibration and to suppress ground resonance at rotor design stage. First, through rotor frequency diagram, natural frequencies must be far away from resonance point and rotating loads generated from blade can be transformed to non-rotating load to predict fuselage vibration. Vibration level was predicted at each forward flight condition by calculating cockpit's vertical acceleration transferred from non-rotating hub load assuming a fuselage as a rigid body. This design method is applied to design current Next-generation Rotor System Blade(NRSB) and will be applied to New Rotor which will be developed Further.

  • The preliminary design stage of helicopters consists of various operations and in each operation design several detailed analysis tasks are needed. The analysis tasks include performance and the required power estimation. In helicopter design, those are usually carried out by adopting the momentum theory. In this paper, an explicit form of computational analysis based on the blade element theory and uniform/non-uniform inflow model is developed. The other motivation of the present development is to obtain trim and required power estimation for various helicopter configurations. Sectional and hub loads, power, trim, and flapping equations are derived by using a symbolic tool. Iterative computations are carried out till convergence is achieved in the blade response, inflow, and trim. The predictions regarding the trim and power estimation turn out to be correlated well with the experimental results. The effect of inflow is further investigated. It is found that the present prediction for the lateral cyclic pitch angle is improved with the non-uniform inflow model as compared to that by the uniform inflow model. The presently improved trim and power estimation will be useful for future helicopter sizing and performance analysis.

  • This paper is the study on the establishment of design model to improve design efficiency using modified weight estimation equation on the initial design stage for development of a helicopter. The methodology to extract coefficients of the weight estimation equation was proposed through the influence investigation for the weight of components and the parameter study and sensitivity analysis for design variables such as the rotor disk loading, the number of blade and the aspect ratio of blade were also performed. As a result of study, the relation of parameters and degree of sensitivity of parameters on helicopter design are considerable points for optimization of helicopter characteristics, and it is necessary for designer to consider the complex relation of main parameters.

  • The implicit formulation of rotor dynamics for helicopter flight simulation has been derived and and presented. The generalized vector kinematics regarding the relative motion between coordinates were expressed as a unified matrix operation and applied to get the inertial velocities and accelerations at arbitaty rotor blade span position. Based on these results the rotor aeromechanic equations for flapping dynamics, lead-lag dynamics and torque dynamics were formulated as an implicit form. Spatial integration methods of rotor dynamic equations along blade span and the expanded applicability of the present implicit formulations for arbitrary hings geometry and hinge sequences have been investigated. Time integration methods for present DAE(Differential Algebraic Equation) to calculate dynamic response calculation are recommenaded as future works.

  • This paper describes the analysis method about the dynamic characteristics and vibratory load through HDS(Helicopter Design Study). To analyze the dynamic characteristics of helicopter rotor blade, the natural frequencies and modes are calculated according to rotor operational speed(Ω). Generally the proximity of rotor natural frequency and N times of rotor operational speed is a dominant component to determine the helicopter vibration. Also we can predict the airframe vibration by calculating the airload of rotating blade exactly. We expect to establish the design procedure of rotor dynamics by describing the two major analysis methods necessary to rotor design.

  • This paper described the performance test and sound characteristics of helicopter 'Tail-Fan' anti-torque system. In this research, Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) developed 'Tail-Fan' anti-torque system for a helicopter and carried out performance and sound capturing tests of even and uneven tail fans. The performance test is carried out and the noise signals which are generated during the test are saved with microphones at the same time. The performance test's results meet the design requirements. Tone-corrected perceived noise level is reduced by replacing the even product with the uneven one.

  • Helicopter rotor blade is required to be designed by considering the interacting effects among aerodynamics, flexibility, and controllability. The reverse design allows the structural components to have common characteristics by using the configuration numerics and experimental results. This paper aims to design the composite rotor blade which will feature common characteristics with that of BO-105. The present engineering design procedure is done by dividing the rotor blade into a few sections and composite laminates across the cross section. For each section, variational asymptotic beam sectional analysis (VABS) program is used to evaluate its flapwise, lagwise, and torsion stiffnesses to have discrepancy smaller than certain tolerance. Finally, CAMRAD II is used to predict the stress acting on the rotor blade during the specific flight condition and to check whether the present deign is structurally valid.

  • In this paper, the diagonal implicit harmonic balance method is applied to analyze helicopter rotor blade flow. The periodic boundary condition for Fourier coefficients is also applied in hover and forward flight conditions. It is available enough to simulate the forward flight problem with only one rotor blade using the periodic boundary condition in the frequency domain. In order to demonstrate the present method, Caradonna & Tung's rotor blades were used and the results were compared to the time-accurate method and experimental data.

  • Fatigue evaluations for the rotor blades of commercial or military rotorcraft have been carried out using the safe life concept since 1950s. Particularly, in the case of a rotor blade made of a composite material, a highly reliable fatigue life could be predicted by evaluation the cumulative damage using combination of fatigue life curve and load spectrum. However, there is a limit in adequately evaluating the strength reducing phenomena caused by damages or defects generated during the manufacturing process or impact damage induced by operational usages, using only the safe life concept. In this study, the fatigue evaluation process based on the damage tolerance concept is described and illustrated by means of successful application to substantiate the retirement time of composite rotor blades.
