Despite the recent growth of interest in molten salt reactor technology and the crucial role which heat transfer plays in the design of power reactors, specific studies on the design of heat exchangers for the Molten Salt Fast Reactor have not yet been performed. In this work we deliver a preliminary but quantitative analysis of the intermediate heat exchangers, based on reference design data from the SAMOFAR H2020-Euratom project. Two different promising reference technologies are selected for study thanks to their compactness features, the Printed Circuit and the Helical Coil heat exchangers. We present preliminary design results for each technology, based on simplified design tools. Results highlight the limiting effects of the compactness constraints imposed on the fuel salt inventory and the allowed size. Large pressure drops on both flow sides are to be expected, with negative consequences on pumping power and natural circulation capabilities. The small size required for the flow channels also represents possible fabrication issues and safety concerns regarding channel blockage.
Various research groups and private interprises are pursuing the design of a Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) as one of the Generation-IV concepts. In the current work a fast neutron MSR using chloride fuel is analyzed, specially analyzing the power production and neutron flux level in the Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX). The neutronic analysis in this work is based on a chloride-fuel MSR with 600 MW thermal power. The core power density was set to 100 MW m-3 with a core H/D [[EQUATION]] 1.0 amd four Intermediate Heat Exchanger (IHX). This leads to a power of 150 MW per IHX; this power is also comparable to the IHX proposed in the SAMOFAR framework. In this work, a preliminary design of a 150 MW helical-coil IHX for a chloride-fueled MSR is prepared and the fission rate, capture rate, and inelastic scatter rate are evaluated.
The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria is the outermost layer of cellular environment in which numerous biophysical and biochemical processes are in action sustaining viability. Advances in cell engineering enable modification of bacterial genetic information that subsequently alters membrane physiology to adapt bacteria to specific purposes. Surface display of a functional molecule on the outer membranes is one of strategies that directs host cells to respond to a specific extracellular matter or stimulus. While intracellular expression of a functional peptide or protein fused to a membrane-anchoring motif is commonly practiced for surface display, the method is not readily applicable to exogenous or large proteins inexpressible in bacteria. Chemical conjugation at reactive groups naturally occurring on the membrane might be an alternative, but often compromises fitness due to non-specific modification of essential components. Herein, we demonstrated two distinct approaches that enable site-specific decoration of the outer membrane with a fluorescent agent in Escherichia coli. An unnatural amino acid genetically incorporated in a surface-exposed peptide could act as a chemoselective handle for bioorthogonal dye labeling. A surface-displayed α-helical domain originating from a part of a selected heterodimeric coiled-coil complex could recruit and anchor a green fluorescent protein tagged with a complementary α-helical domain to the membrane surface in a site- and hetero-specific manner. These methods hold a promise as on-demand tools to confer new functionalities on the bacterial membranes.
Small diameter composite helical springs (CS) are developed using a hot plated mold for reinforcement of common optical fiber jumper cord (OJC). The outer diameters of the springs are about 2 ~ 3mm. These springs are inserted into the OJC to protect the damage of an optical fiber from the sudden lateral load. Two types of CS, Yarn type (Y-type) and Band type (B-type), are manufactured to compare the effectiveness for the damage protection. The experimental works were conducted to check the effect of the CS covered around OJC on the mechanical and optical properties. Experimental observations show a considerable effect on the flexural resistance, hence slowing down the deterioration of the optical power by the internal damage of the fiber. Obtained main results are as follows: (1) Y-type CS has better protection abilities to lateral loading than B-types. (2) Compared with bare OJC, CS-OJC has less power loss under the loading. (3) OJC covered with the composite coil spring has a possibility for a practical usage with full fruits.
The conformational transitions of oligopeptide -(HPPHPPP)$_n$- (H: hydrophobic amino acid, P: polar amino acid) which becomes cross linked-dimer are detected at various temperatures, pHs, ionic strengths, and the concentrations of denaturant. In this study, the transitions of oligopeptide due to denaturant, and those due to temperature are theoretically studied. Oligopeptide 20R as chain-dimer and guanidum-HCl as denaturant are used(20R, which contains 10 interchain and /or 10 intrachain electrostatic repulsions). Alpha helix-coil transitions by denaturant are very steep. This shows that the denaturations have transition states of, presumably all helical forms and random coils. The transitions by temperature are smoother than those by the concentration of denaturant. At low temperature the oligopetides which contain long helices exist more than those which contain short helices. As temperature rises, the mole fractions of the partially denatured oligopeptides increase. So the partially denatured oligopeptides are widely distributed at the transition temperature.
Gaegurin 4 (GGN4), a novel peptide isolated from the skin of a Korean frog, Rana rugosa, has broad spectrum antimicrobial activity. A number of amphipathic peptides closely related to GGN4 undergo a coil to helix transition with concomitant oligomerization in lipid membranes or membrane-mimicking environments. Despite intensive study of their secondary structures, the oligomeric states of the peptides before and after the transition are not well understood. To clarify the structural basis of its antibiotic action, we used analytical ultracentrifugation to define the aggregation state of GGN4 in water, ethyl alcohol, and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP). The maximum size of GGN4 in 15% HFIP corresponded to a decamer, whereas it was monomeric in buffer. The oligomeric transition is accompanied by a cooperative 9 nm blue-shift of maximum fluorescence emission and a large secondary structure change from an almost random coil to an ${\alpha}$-helical structure. GGN4 induces pores in lipid membranes and, using electrophysiological methods, we estimated the diameter of the pores to be exceed $7.3{\AA}$, which suggests that the minimal oligomer structure responsible is a pentamer.
In this study, the cDNA library of Chang-liver cells was immunoscreened using common ADAMs antibody to obtain ADAM related genes. We found one positive clone that was confirmed as a new gene by Blast, which is an uncharacterized helical and coil protein and processes protease activity, and named protease-related protein 1 (ARP1). The submitted GenBank accession number is AY078070. Molecular characterizations of ARP1 were analyzed with appropriate bioinformatics software. To analyse its expression and function, ARP1 was subcloned into glutathione S-transferase fusion plasmid pGEX-2T and expressed by E. coli system. The in vitro expression product of ARP1 was recognized by common ADAMs antibody with western blot. Interestingly, ARP1 cleaves gelatine at pH9.5, which suggests it is an alkaline protease. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR result indicates that ARP1 mRNA is strongly transcribed in the liver and the treated Chang-liver cells.
One of the small proteins from Helicobacter pylori, HP1242, was investigated by the solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. HP1242 is known as a 76-residue conserved hypothetical protein and its function cannot be identified based on sequence homology. Here, the results of the backbone $^1H$, $^{15}N$, and $^{13}C$ resonance assignments of the HP1242 are reported using double- and triple-resonance techniques. About 95% of all of the $^1HN$, $^{15}N$, $^{13}CO$, $^{13}C{\alpha}$, and $^{13}C{\beta}$ resonances that cover 75 non- Proline residues of the 76 residues are clarified through sequential- and specific- assignments. In addition, three helical regions were clearly identified on the basis of the resonance assignments.
In order to develop a compact evaporator, experiments that show characteristics of evaporating heat transfer and pressure drop in the helically coiled minichannel were performed in our previous research. This study was focused on the performance analysis of helically coiled heat exchangers with circular minichannels with an inner diameter=1.0 mm. The working fluid was R-22, and the properties of R-22 were estimated using the REFPROP program. Numerical simulation was performed to compare results with the experimental results of the helically coiled heat exchanger. As the heat transfer rate and pressure drop were calculated at the micro segment of the branch channels, the performance of the evaporator was evaluated. The following conclusions were obtained through the numerical simulations of the helically coiled heat exchanger. It showed good performance when the flow rate of each branch channels was suitable to heat load of air-side. The numerical simulation value agreed with experimental results within ${\pm}15%$. In this study, a numerical simulation program was developed to estimate the performance of a helically coiled evaporator. And, an optimum helically coiled minichannels evaporator was designed.

The flow and heat/mass transfer in the falling-film of a heat exchanger can be influenced by the motion of the surrounding refrigerant vapor. In this study, the effect of the vapor flow direction on the absorption heat transfer has been investigated for a falling-film helical coil which is frequently used as the absorber of ammonia/water absorption refrigerators. The experiments were carried out for different solution concentration. The heat and mass transfer performance was measured for both parallel and counter-current flow. The effect of vapor flow on the heat and mass transfer is found to be increased with decreasing solution concentration. In the experiments with low solution concentration, whose vapor specific volume is great, the counter-current flow of vapor resulted in uneven distribution of falling-film and reduced the heat transfer performance of the absorber. The direction of the vapor flow hardly affected the thermal performance as the solution concentration became stronger since the specific volume of the ammonia/water vapor was much smaller than that of the water vapor.
