The effects of EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) on heavy-duty diesel engine performance, NO and soot emissions were numerically investigated using the modified KIVA-3V code. For the fuel spray, the atomization model based on the linear stability analysis and spray wall impingement model were developed for the KIVA-3V code. The Zeldovich mechanism for the formation of nitric oxide and the soot model suggested by Hiroyasu et al. were used to predict the diesel emissions. In this paper, the computational results of fuel spray, cylinder pressure, and emissions were compared with experimental data, and the optimum EGR rates were sought from the NO and soot emissions trade-off. The results showed that the EGR is effective in suppressing NO but the soot emission was increased considerably by EGR. Using cooled EGR, soot emission could be enhanced without worsening of NO.
Currently, due to serious increase of pollution scones, lots of technology has been involved to reduce exhaust gas in diesel engine. But the amounts of exhaust gas can not be decreased somehow due to the increase of diesel vehicles. Moreover, emission standards of each counties are being stringent in advanced countries such as USA and Europe. In the near future, sulfur contents in fuel must be essentially reduced f3r health and environment because sulfur can basically reduce exhaust gas. Therefore, when will be applied to Bio-diesel and ULSD, they could reduce sulfur contents of fuel without aftertreatment and might conform the influence of engine performance, emission, smoke and fuel consumption.
Diesel PM can be controlled using Diesel Particulate Filter, which can effectively reduce the level of soot emissions to ambient background levels. In the Heavy Duty Diesel area, the Continuously Regeneration trap has been widely applied in the retrofit market. As the Special act for the improvement of air quality in the capital area, the retrofit program for DPF to used diesel vehicle has progressed favorably and there are currently over 1,000 of these DPF in use in retrofit applications in korea. These DPF comprise a specially formulated Diesel Oxidation Catalyst upstream of a DPF. The $NO_2$ generated by the DOC is used to combust the carbon collected in the DPF at low temperature. To certificate DPF device that is suitable to domestic circumstances, it is necessary to evaluate exactly the DPF devices according to the regulation of DPF certificate test procedure for retrofit(ministry of environment(MOE) announcement NO. 2005-16). To do so the understand of that regulation like the standard of PM reduction rate is needed. In this study the test procedure including test cycle and BPT test condition was examined and also the test result for specific DPF was analyzed. In every test like field test, PM reduction efficiency test and seoul-10 mode test, no defect could be showed.
Phenomenological models for direct injection diesel engine emissions including NO, soot, and HC were implemented into a full engine cycle simulation and validated with experimental data obtained from representative heavy-duty DI diesel engines. The cycle simulation developed earlier by Jung and Assanis (2001) features a quasi-dimensional, multi-zone, spray combustion model to account for transient spray evolution, fuel-air mixing, ignition and combustion. In this study, additional models for HC emissions were newly implemented and the models for NO, soot, and HC emissions were validated against experimental data. It is shown that the models can predict the emissions with reasonable accuracy. However, additional effort may be required to enhance the fidelity of models across a wide range of operating conditions and engine types.
In recent years, environmental damage to urban area becomes serious problem due to the exhaust emissions by increasing the number of vehicle . Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) are hazardous air pollutant s to human health and environment. The reduction technologies of exhaust emissions from diesel engines are improvement of engine combustion, fuel quality and development of diesel exhaust aftertreatment. In this study, a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) that is one of diesel exhaust aftertreatments was made for performance evaluation . It was tested for NA and turbocharged engine by D-13 mode that currently be used for regulation driving test mode in Korea Scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) was used for the analysis of the particle size distribution with and w/o DOC. As the results , for NA and tubochartged engine, CO, THC, DPM was respectively reduced 85.7, 40.7,3.3% and 79.1, 53.1, 11.6% by DOC. Test results of particle size distribution was showed that particle number is 107 ~108per ㎤ , 2 $\times$105 ~5$\times$105$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for weight concentration and 100~200nm for particle mean size in diesel engine and there is no effect to reduce the particle concentration by the DOC.
Robustness and controllability are the key factors in internal combustion engine commercialization. This study focuses on the combustion strategy to commercialize the low temperature diesel combustion technology. Various LTC combustion methods such as PPCI, MK and highly diluted mixing controlled LTC were conducted on 6.0L heavy duty diesel engine. To find the best feasible LTC strategy, emission level, fuel consumption and combustion safety during the combustion mode change were considered. Experiments were carried out under various engine operating conditions; engine speed & load, EGR level, injection timing. Finally, this study suggests realizable LTC combustion strategy; moderate EGR level and slight early injection are possible to considerably lower PM, NOx emission and expand LTC operating range up to 50% load without CO and HC emission.
Current diesel engines are usually equipped with turbochargers for improving fuel economy as well as meeting more stringent emission regulations. These turbochargers usually cause noise problems because they spins vey high such as 100,000 to 200,000 rpm, These noises are largely divided into whistle and whine noises. The frequency of whistle noise corresponds to their rotation speed, and the frequency of whine noise does to the multiplication of their rotation speed and the number of compressor blades. Turbocharger manufacturers developed a special type of compressor, effectively compressing air sucked from a duct; Recirculation Compressor Cover (RCC) or Map Width Enhancement (MWE). This special structure improves turbocharger's capability by expanding compressor's working area, but it seriously causes a noise problem, whine noise. There were many trials to surpress the noise occurred inside a compressor such as modification of a compressor, noise baffles or secondary measurements. However, it was currently concluded that the whine noise caused by the special compressor can not be reduced to that done by a standard compressor, and the strength difference of whine noises between the two compressors is not negligible. Thus, the standard compressor is decided to be applied to a newly developing heavy-duty diesel engine in order to resolve the turbocharger noise problem with a stiffened suction duct directly connected to a compressor.
The direct injection diesel engine is one of the most efficient thermal engines. For this reason DI diesel engines are widely used for heavy-duty applications. But the world is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of diesel engine. So, that is air pollution related to exhaust gas resulted from explosive combustion should be improved. Exhaust Gas Recirculation(EGR) is a proven method to reduce NOx emissions. In this study, the experiments were performed at various engine loads while the EGR rates were set from $0\%$ to $30\%.$ The emissions trade-off and combustion of diesel engine are investigated. The brake specific fuel consumption rate is very slightly fluctuated with EGR in the range of experimental conditions. The ignition delay increased with increasing EGR rate. The maximum value of premixed combustion for the rate of heat release is increased with increasing EGR rate. NOx emissions are decreased with increasing EGR rate at high load and high speed. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR system resulted in a very large reduction in oxides of nitrogen at the expense of higher smoke emissions.
In this study a heavy duty diesel engine was modified into a 11-liter 6-cylinder SPI CNG dedicated engine, which was tested to investigate the performance and exhaust emission under the maximum load condition as the engine speed was increased in the range of 1,000∼2,200 rpm. The exhaust emission was also measured at D-13 mode as well as AVL-8 mode.
Engine oil is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. The main function is to reduce wear on moving parts; it also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing, and cools the engine by carrying heat away from moving parts. In engines, there are parts which move against each other. Otherwise, the friction wastes the useful power by converting the kinetic energy to heat. Those parts were worn away, which could lead to lower efficiency and degradation of the engine. It increases fuel consumption, decreases power output, and can induce the engine failure. This study was conducted to evaluate the relation between engine oil property changes and engine performance for the diesel engine. This test was performed by using 12L, 6 cylinder, heavy duty engines. Low SAPS 10W30 engine oil (two type engine oils) was used. Test procedure and method was in accordance with the modified CEC L-57-T97 (OM441LA) method. In this study, TAN, TBN, KV and metal components, engine power, blowby gas, A_F were presented to evaluate the relation with engine oil property changes and engine performance. TAN, TBN, KV and metal We found that the components were generally increased but engine performance did not change. This results mean that property changes did not affect on engine performance because those were not enough to affect engine performance.
