We addressed the development of a novel, low-cost, and high-efficient material from hybrid materials, known as microcapsules. Microcapsules are a composite adsorbent made of a mixture of tannin, sericite and chitosan. The FT-IR analysis showed that the microcapsules contain hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl, and amino groups, which play an important role in the adsorption of heavy metals. The microcapsules were able to remove 99% of Pb(II) in 30 min, and obtained a removal efficiency of more than (13-50)%, compared with the single adsorbents of tannin, chitosan, and sericite. In adsorption kinetic analysis, pseudo-second-order adsorption was more suitable than pseudo-first-order adsorption, and chemical adsorption did not limit the adsorption rate of Pb(II) ion. In isothermal adsorption, Langmuir adsorption was more suitable than Freundlich adsorption, and the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was 167.82 (mg/g). Furthermore, desorption and reusability studies, as well as the applicability of the material for wastewater treatment, demonstrated that microcapsules offer a promising hybrid material for the efficient removal of significant water pollutants, i.e., Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-inflammation effect of the mixture, consisting of a series of different ratio of Ecklonia cava extract and scoria. Also, to make more functional scoria powder into cosmetic material, studies on the toxicity by cell viability assay. Scoria is found in large amounts in Jeju Island, as an adsorbent of heavy metal ions ($Ni_2{^+}$, $Zn_2{^+}$, and $Cr_3{^+}$) in an aspect of its efficient utilization. Marine plants such as Ecklonia cava contain high amounts of polyphenolic antioxidants. The purpose of this study was to examine the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammation effects of combination of mixture of Eckloina cava extrat and scoria with optimal ratio. Therefore, this study suggested that combination of mixture of Eckloina cava extrat and scoria and its attenuated the oxidative and inflammatory reactions.
Adsorption behavior of metal elements onto soil minerals such as illite, halloysite. zeolite(clinoptilolite). and goethite was comparatively investigated at $25^{\circ}C$ using pollutant water collected from a gold-bearing metal mine. Speciation of solutions reacted was determined by WATEQ4F program, indicating that most of metal ions exist as free ions and that there is little difference in chemical species and their relative abundances between initial soultion and reacted solutions. The experimental data exhibit that the adsorption extent of elements varies depending on mineral types and reaction time. The adsorption process practically took place within one hour, with Fe and As significantly removed from solutions. On the whole, halloysite is regarded as the most effective adsorbent among minerals used in the experiment. Adsorption properties of alkali elements do not consistent with a manner predicted from hydrated ionic radii.
The utilization of fly-ash containing high levels of the unburned carbon was investigated. In this study adsorbents were manufactured from fly-ash ad a raw material and the manufactured adsorbents were applied to the waste-water treatment including heavy metals. Varying the anthracite(Jangsung coal) content, three types of pellet were made. The carbon content of pellet increased appreciably upon the addition of anthracite. After carbonization and activation using the pellets, adsorbents showed following characteristics; the range of hardness was between 85% and 96%, iodine number was from 100 mg/g to 300 mg/g. In proportion to the anthracite addition, hardness and iodine number increased. Through the adsorption experiments of heavy metals, removal efficiencies of Pb and Cr by manufactured adsorbents were over 90%. In case of fly-ash, removal efficiencies of Pb and Cr were 31.5% and 5.6% respectively. The reason why removal capacities of manufactured adsorbents were higher than fly-ash was postulated that adsorption capability was improved by unburned carbon and $SiO_2$ which included in fly-ash during steam activation.
The purpose of this study is to promote utilization of paper mill sludge as an adsorbent for stabilizing heavy metals in contaminated water by measuring the adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge for cadmium and arsenic. To measure adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge, sorption isotherm experiments were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Also, two methods of chemical modifications were applied to improve the adsorption capacities of paper-mill-sludge: the first method used sodium hydroxide (NaOH), called PMS-1, and the second method used the NaOH and tartaric acid ($C_4H_6O_6$) together, called PMS-2. For Cd adsorption, PMS-1 presented the increase of reactivity while PMS-2 presented the decline of reactivity compared to that of untreated paper-mill-sludge. In case of As adsorption, both PMS-1 and PMS-2 showed the decrease of adsorption capacities. This is because zeta-potential of paper mill sludge was changed to more negative values during chemical modification process due to the hydroxyl group in NaOH and the carboxyl group in $C_4H_6O_6$, respectively. Therefore, we may conclude that the chemical treatment process increases adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge for cation heavy metals such as Cd but not for As.

Iron sand, having iron as a major component, was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing Cu(II) or Pb(II). To investigate the stability of iron sand at acidic condition, dissolution of Fe and Al was studied with variation of solution pH ranging from 2 to 4.5. Iron concentration in the extracted solution was below the emission regulation of wastewater even at a strong acidic condition, pH 2. Although an important concentration of aluminum was extracted at pH 2, the dissolution greatly decreased above pH 3. This stability test suggests that application of iron sand has little problem in the treatment of wastewater above pH 3. Adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto iron sand was investigated in a batch and a column test. In case of Cu(II), rapid adsorption was noted, showing 50% removal within 2 hrs, and then reached a near complete equilibrium after 24 hrs. Adsorption was favorable at higher pH in each metal ion and showed a near complete removal above pH 6, indicating a typical cationic-type adsorption. From the adsorption isotherm obtained with variation of the concentration of each metal ion, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Pb(II) was identified as 2,170 mg/kg 및 3,450 mg/kg, respectively.
Biochar obtained from the thermal conversion of biomass has high potential as a substitute material for activated carbon and other carbon-based materials because it is economical, environmentally friendly, and carbon-neutral. The physicochemical properties of biochar can also be controlled by a range of activation methods such as physical, chemical, and hydrothermal treatments. Activated biochar can be used as a catalyst for the catalytic pyrolysis of a biomass and as an absorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions and atmospheric pollutants. The applications of biochar are also expanding not only as a key component in producing energy storage materials, such as supercapacitors, lithium ion batteries, and fuel cells, but also in carbon capture and storage. This paper reviews the recent progress on the activation of biochar and its diverse present and future applications.

We studied a simple approach for synthesis of mesoporous Y(M-Y) from commercial zeolite Y precursors by treating of NaOH with $CH_3(CH_2)_{15}N(Br)(CH_3)_3$ as template. The physicochemical properties of the mesoporous zeolites Y were then analyzed using XRD, nitrogen full-isotherms at 77 K, SEM and TEM. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis showed that surface area and pore diameter of synthesized mesoporous zeolite Y(M-Y) were $1072m^2/g$ and ~3.3 nm, respectively. And M-Y was applied for the removal of $Mn^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$ from aqueous solution. This material, which introduces mesoporosity with zeolite Y character, displayed a superior adsorption capacity than commercial zeolite Y when used as an adsorbent for the removal of $Mn^{2+}$ and $Fe^{2+}$.
The main objective of this study was to examine the removal of heavy metals from water by inflated vermiculites. The component of vermiculites was analyzed by XRF, and the concentration of metal ion was measured by ICP-AES. Serial batch kinetic tests and batch sorption tests were conducted to determine the removal characteristics for heavy metals in aqueous solutions. As a result, solution pH values of tests with the inflated vermiculites generally increased and then stabilized. Equilibrium pHs were generally established within 5 hrs. In addition, removal rates of inflated vermiculites were tested at the initial concentration of 3 mg/L. As a result, at equilibrium concentration, except for chromium (36.23%), Most of the heavy metals were effectively removed (96.08~98.54%). Finally, sorption data were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The Qmax obtained from Langmuir isotherm were determined to Pb $725.4mg\;kg^{-1}$, Cd $568.8mg\;kg^{-1}$, Zn $540.2mg\;kg^{-1}$, Cu $457.2mg\;kg^{-1}$ Cr $0.9mg\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. The results of the study indicate that inflated vermiculites can be properly used as an adsorbent for various heavy metals because of its outstanding removal rate.
This study examined the adsorption characteristics of $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ in the aqueous solution by Hizikia susiformis biochar which was collected from Jeju Island. The optimal pH for $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ adsorption were 2 and pH 6, respectively. Kinetic data showed that the adsorption occurred during the first 100 min, and the most of heavy metals were bound to biochars within 300 min. Moreover, the kinetic data presented that the course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir model and the $Cr^{6+}$ adsorption capacity (25.91 mg/g) was higher than that of $As^{3+}$ (16.54 mg/g). From these results, the seaweed biochar was shown to be a efficient adsorbent for $Cr^{6+}$ and $As^{3+}$ metals in a contaminated environment.
