The spatial and temporal distribution of dissolved trace metals has been studied to identify trends in space and time and to evaluate the pollution status in a semi-closed bay (Gohyun bay), Korea. Surface seawater samples were collected over four seasons at 18 stations in the bay between 2003 and 2004 and once at 7 stations around a large shipyard in May 2004. The concentration of Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in seawater in February and May were highly variable in space, showing the higher value relative to other season. Those metals concentrations were decreased from inner-to outer-stations. In around the shipyard, Cu, Pb and Zn showed the higher variability depending on time. Cu and Zn concentrations at the sites around the shipyard had 2 times higher values compared with the average of inner stations in Gohyun bay. The very high correlations between salinity and either Cu and Zn has been showed. Especially, there was a significant relationship between Cu and Zn. We recognize that the shipyard is major source of Cu and Zn in seawater. Therefore, marine environment management policy such as the prevention and control of heavy metal input from a shipyard is required.
In the present study, we examined biosorption characteristics of heavy metals onto the extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) produced by the purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacteria Rhodopseudomonas sp. KH4, which was isolated from a stream in Anyang, Kyonggi-Do. When Cd (100 mg/L) and Cu (100 mg/L) were added to EPS (1.0 g/L) in the optimal condition (Cd; pH 8, Cu; pH 5, $40^{\circ}C$), 84.2 mg/L of Cd and 70.0 mg/L of Cu were adsorbed within 30 min and 10 min, respectively. When 100 mg/L of Cd and Cu were present as mixture, 16.8 mg/L of Cd and 48.7 mg/L of Cu were adsorbed at $25^{\circ}C$, pH 5. The maximum adsorption capacity determined by fitting Langmuir isotherms model was suitable for describing the biosorption of Cd (76.9 mg/g) and Cu (67.1 mg/g) by EPS. The neutral monosaccharide in the EPS determined by GC consisted of arabinose (2.4%), glucose (7.1%) and mannose (90.5%).
In the study it was investigated the diffusion characteristics of heavy metal pollutions such as Cu, Pb, Hg and As which was the main pollution sources of soils from abandoned mines. The pollution of Cu and Pb was caused by Mine A, that of Hg was caused by Mine 3, that of Pb was caused by Mine C and that of Cu, Pb, As was caused by Mine D. Though the high concentration was detected within 100m from abandoned mines, the low concentration was detected over than 100m from abandoned mines in all heavy metals investigated except As. It means that it was very difficult to estimate the pollution level of As caused abandoned mines. The results were discussed in the concentrations of Cu, Pb and distances showed a good relationship with 0.71 and 0.68 as the coefficient of correlation, respectively. In particular the relativity of Cu to Pb as very strong with 0.84 as the coefficient of correlation. It was consistent with the chemical behavior in soils in the case of Cu and Pb. Therefore it will be a promising approach to remove Cu and Pb with estimated values in the study.
Total and extractable contents of heavy metals were measured in sediment and seafood from Bukhang and Boggil-ri tidal flats along the Mokpo coastal area, south-western part of Korean peninsular in order to assess the degree of metal pollution, metal bioavailability and metal hioaccumulation. The metal concentrations, except Pb were found to be greater than the background concentrations of sediments indicating the progress of cumulative contamination by anthropogenic origin of metals. The order of extractable metal concentrations in sediments were Mn(32-53 mg/kg)>Zn(14-42 mg/tg)>Cu(2.5-17.0 mg/kg)>Pb(2.4-6.8 mg/kg)>Cd(0.5-0.7 mg/kg). However, the amount of metals associated with extractable fraction of sediments were significantly high in Bukhang relative to Boggil-ri. Significant bioaccumulation of all metals, except Pb were observed in seaweed and benthos. The order of bioaccumulation of metals were: in concentration; all biota commonly, Mn(129-374 mg/kg)>Zn(19-106 mg/kg)>Cu(6-87 mg/kg)>Cd(4.6-7.6 mg/kg)>Pb(0.2-3.7 mg/kg), in BCF; Enteromorpha, Cd>Mn>Cu>Zn>Pb, Ilyoplax deschampsi, Cu>Cd>Mn>Zn>Pb, Urechis unicinctus, Cd>Zn>Mn>Cu>Pb. Some metal concentrations of Enteromorpha, especially Cu, Zn, weakly Pb in bukhang, Mn, Cd in boggili-ri, were correlate well with concentrations in sediment, indicating relatively more contaminated by the anthropogenic origin of metals in each tidal flat. The results clearly indicate that the seafood of bukhang, even of Boggili-ri known as clean area, are contaminated with metals.
Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, was transplanted reciprocally between contaminated site (St. STP) and relatively less contaminated site (St. UB) in Onsan Bay, Korea in order to estimate heavy metal accumulation and release. Transplanted and indigenous mussels were collected 8 times over 108 days deployment at both sites and analyzed for Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn using ICP/MS. Cu and Zn concentration did not show any significant differences between transplanted and indigenous mussels throughout the experiment period, although dissolved Cu and Zn concentrations in seawater were significantly higher at contaminated site. Pb accumulated rapidly, while Cd did not show any accumulation in the mussels transplanted from St. UB to St. STP. These accumulation patterns might reflect the variation of dissolved metal concentration; dissolved Pb concentration was significantly higher in St. STP than St. UB, while dissolved Cd concentration was similar between both sites throughout this experiment. Release of Cd and Pb in the mussels transplanted from St. STP to St. UB was not significant during the transplantation period. The levels and variation of Pb and Cd concentrations in mussels transplanted from St. STP to St. UB were similar to those in the indigenous mussels at St. STP throughout the period. Therefore, Cd and Pb accumulated in indigenous mussels may indicate the integrated metals throughout their lives, not responding to the present status of seawater because the release of accumulated metals in mussels occurs very slowly when the seawater metal levels are lowered. On the other hand, since the transplanted mussels can respond immediately to the levels of metals in seawater, it may be suggested that the present status of heavy metals in seawater can be only acquired from the metal levels of mussels transplanted from clean environments.
The objective of this study is to review of environmental assessment of heavy metals derived from various metalliferous mines in Korea. As a results of national wide research for heavy metal contaminations in the vicinity of metalleferous mines, the main contaminants are mine waste materials including tailings. From the materials, toxic elements including As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn can be dispersed into downstream through wind and water. Thus, soils around the mines contain elevated levels of those elements, which are over the guide values for environmental regulation of soils in Korea. Arsenic is one of the most important elements contaminated by mining activities, to a less extent, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. In spite of remediation works for some metal mines by the government, there are still lots of abandoned mines which are necessary for reclamation of mining sites. This study also includes that metal concentrations in soils and tailings can be varied upon various decomposition methods including 0.1N HC1 and aqua regia and sequential extraction scheme, with differences in each element, too. This may be due to geochemical characteristics of the elements, such as solubility, mobility and chemical forms in the geochemical environment. Finally, it is suggested that a certain organization should be runned by Korean government for management of abandoned mines.
A continuous process of persulfate oxidation and citric acid washing was investigated for ex-situ remediation of complex contaminated soil containing total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons (TRPHs) and heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn). The batch experiment results showed that TRPHs could be degraded by $Fe^{2+}$ activated persulfate oxidation and that heavy metals could be removed by washing with citric acid. For efficient remediation of the complex contaminated soil, two-stage and three-stage processes were evaluated. Removal efficiency of the two-stage process (persulfate oxidation - citric acid washing) was 83% for TRPHs and 49%, 53%, 24% for Cu, Zn, and Pb, respectively. To improve the removal efficiency, a three-stage process was also tested; case A) water washing - persulfate oxidation - citirc acid washing and case B) persulfate oxidation - citric acid washing (1) - citric acid washing (2). In case A, 63% of TRPHs, 73% of Cu, 60% of Zn, and 55% of Pb were removed, while the removal efficiencies of TRPHs, Cu, Pb, and Zn were 24%, 68%, 62%, and 59% in case B, respectively. The results indicated that case A was better than case B. The three-stage process was more effective than the two-stage process for the remediation of complex-contaminated soil in therms of overall removal efficiency.
Fixed-bed adsorption of metal ions on chitosan bead was studied to remove heavy metal ions in waste water. Chitin was extracted from carb shell and chitosan was prepared by deacetylation of the chitin. The chitosan in bead was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm was determined from the experimental results of equilibrium adsorption for individual metal ion ($Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$) on chitosan bead. Adsorption strength of metal ions decreased in the order of $Cu^{2+}$>$Co^{2+}$>$Ni^{2+}$ ion. Breakthrough curves of single and multicomponent adsorption for metal ions were obtained from the experimental results of fixed-bed adsorption. The breakthrough curves were analyzed by simulation with fixed-bed adsorption equation based on LDFA (linear driving force approximation) adopted LAS (ideal adsorbed solution) theory which can predict multi-component adsorption isotherm from individual adsorption isotherm. The behavior of fixed bed adsorption for single and multi-component system could be nicely simulated by the equation.

This study focused on the content characteristics of regulated hazardous substances in specific wastes. Regulated heavy metal such as Cu, Pb, Cd analyzed the 108 waste samples that it choice from the representative facilities. Analytical method used content test method, suggested on the basis of analytical method of developing country, and the results as compared with limited standard in Austria Petroleum, primary metalworking and electronic industry had high content of Cu more than 100 mg/kg of Austria limited standard. Pb detected high level concentration the sample that dust producted at Primary metalworking industry. In case of total Cr was show that high content at KSIC 18, 19, 23 etc but result analyzed Cr(VI), it was shown that high level at dust producted from sewing clothes and fur industry.

Heavy metals concentration in superficial sediment of effluent discharging area was rapidly increased by annual loadings of Zn(8.465 Kg), Ni(3,291 Kg), Cu(1,636 Kg) and Pb(1,250 Kg) from sewage effluent of 63×10/sup 6/ m³/yr. In a consequent result, specially the concentrations of Zn and Cu in the sediment were three times higher than preindustrial reference values. The evaluation by multiple ecological risk indices showed that heavy metals contamination in sediment of discharging area was 'heavily Polluted level' by sediment quality criteria and increased 2.6 times by the degree of contamination. It was also judged that toxicological effects of sediment receiving the primary effluent would occasionally (16~47%) occur by guidelines for adverse biological effect.
