Predicting quality traits using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy on whole grain samples has gained wide acceptance as a non-destructive, rapid and cost effective technique. Barley breeding programs throughout southern Australia currently use this technology as a tool for selecting malting quality lines. For the past 3 years whole grain barley calibrations have been developed at VIDA to predict malting quality traits in the early generation selections of the breeding program. More recently calibrations for whole grain malt have been developed and introduced to aid in selecting malted samples at the mid-generation stage for more complex malting quality traits. Using the same population set, barley and malt calibrations were developed to predict hot water extracts (EBC and IoB), diastatic power, free $\alpha$-amino nitrogen, soluble protein, wort $\beta$-glucan and $\beta$-glucanase. The correlation coefficients between NIR predicted values and laboratory methods for malt were all highly significant ($R^2$ > 0.84), whereas the correlation coefficients for the barley calibrations were lower ($R^2$ > 0.57) but still significant. The magnitude of the error in predicting hot water extract, diastatic power and wort $\beta$-glucan using whole grain malt was reduced by 50% when compared with predicting the same trait using whole grain barley. This can be explained by the complex nature of attempting to develop calibrations on whole grain barley utilizing malt data. During malting, the composition of barley is modified by the action of enzymes throughout the steeping and germination stages and by heating during the kilning stage. Predicting malting quality on whole grain malt is a more reliable alternative to predicting whole grain barley, although there is the added expense of micro-malting the samples. The ability to apply barley and malt calibrations to different generations is an advantage to a barley breeding program that requires thousands of samples to be assessed each year.

Most of the sewage sludge is organic waste containing a large amount of organic substances decomposable by microorganisms by biological treatment. As for existing sewage sludge treatment methods, reduction and fuel conversion are being carried out using technologies such as drying, incineration, torrefaction, carbonization. However, the disadvantage of high energy consumption has been pointed out as latent heat of 539 kcal/kg is consumed based on drying. Therefore, in this study, we intend to produce solid fuel through hydrothermal carbonization(HTC), which is a thermochemical treatment. To evaluate the value of solid fuel, the characteristics of carbonization and fuel ratio were analyzed. As a result, as the hydrothermal carbonization reaction temperature increased, the lower heating value also increased by about 500 kcal/kg due to the increase in the degree of carbonization. H/C, O/C, ratio showed a decreasing trend from 1.78, 0.46 to 1.57, 0.32. When the ratio of ash to combustible content (fixed carbon + volatile) of dry sludge was 0.25 or more, it was derived that the degree of carbonization and calorific value did not increase even when hydrothermal carbonization was performed.

This study researched the effects of cooking methods on phytochemical-enriched thin rice porridge (RP) of three colors (red, yellow, and green). Each of the RPs was prepared by three cooking methods and retorted through two-steps (step 1, at $80^{\circ}C$ for 15 min; step 2, at $82^{\circ}C$ for 25 min) for pasteurization. Cooking method (CM) 1 involved heating a mixture of all ingredients while CM 2 involved addition of apple/beet (AB, red), sweet-pumpkin/cabbage (PC, yellow) or vitamin/pear (green) while heating rice flour and glutinous rice flour. CM 3 involved mixing pre-cooked fruits and vegetables with cooked thin RP. The viscosity of RP prepared by CM 1 was lower than those of other RPs (P<0.05). The result of colorimetric a value show that red and green color of AB and VP prepared by CM 2 and CM 3 were most vivid. Contents of phytochemicals and antioxidants were higher when RP was prepared by CM 2 and CM 3 compared to CM 1. ${\Delta}E$ values of PC showed no significant difference before and after pasteurization, whereas AB and VP were significantly different (P<0.05). Antioxidant activity after retorting was not significantly different from those of un-retorted RPs. The results of color, phytochemical content, and antioxidant activity show that CM 2 or CM 3 were considerably better than CM 1, whereas cooking method had no effect after two-step retorting. Therefore, uncomplicated cooking method such as CM 1 or CM 2 are suited for commercial production of RPs.
The purpose of this study was to find the optimal swelling method and condition for seacucumber to improve its taste and texture to accomodate the rapid increase of consumption. Another purpose was to try to determine an easy way to soak dried sea-cucumber under different conditions, and identify the influence of swelling time on the texture of sea-cucumber, in order to reduce preparation time and provide basic data for easy handling. After boiling or steaming for six different periods including 5, 15, 30 and 60 minutes the texture of the sea-cucumbers were compared, For the additive test, the sea-cucumbers were boiling for 30 minutes period with 4 different additives and the textures were compared, Since the texture is an important characteristic of sea-cucumber, there are many variables that affect this property including the, drying and preservation methods. This study provides basic understanding of the influence of the heating method, time and temperature on the swelling of sea-cucumber for handy use at processing sites.
The purpose of this study was to survey the trends of waste products in schools, its gathering and disposal, identification of problems and to analyze its disposal. Moreover, this study was aimed at basic suggestions about the establishment and plans of waste environmental education. 98 public primary and secondary schools were surveyed in Seoul during the month of March and April, 1991. Information was collected from each educational association by random sampling. Questionaries were used for this survey. To understand the disposal status of school waste and its reforms, this study surveyed the amount of waste by products, their origin and analyzed the disposal by type, one number of schools and teachers involved. The dump sited and disposal methods of school waste, its problems, and the status of school waste educations were researched, and ideal disposal methods and plans for waste education were suggested. The results were as follows. 1. The School's trash was produced by followings: paper, vinyle plastics, food, woods, metals, ceramics, glass, bottles, and ash from the heating system. The biggest cause of the school's waste as shown by the survey was a lack of environmental awareness(39.8%). The second biggest was the use of a one time use of disposable paper products(27.6%). 2. Waste collection by different grade levels were proven to be important but as you move from elementary to high school, the waste collecting operation decreased, in this connection between the students and waste collection itself it was significant on the other hand the teachers were not working as significant variables. 3. Of the school that collected waste 69.5 percent of the schools separately grouped common waste and recyclable waste. 25 schools(42.4%) received improvement on their environmental awareness of trash collection through this method. 4. From the number of disposal sites in surveyed schools, it was determined that the education of the necessity for separation of waste was performed in vain and accordingly the should require a real education in the future. 5. Regarding the method of disposal of waste the survey indicated that the #1 method of disposal was partial burning and the remains carried to a dump site by others(35,7%). In elementary schools the entire waste was taken by individuals to a dump site (33.3%). In high schools partial burning and then transported by individuals #1 in our survey(50%). 6. Relative to the problem of the treatment to waste, the emission of smoke from the burning was considered to be the #1 priority in our survey (62.3%) the problem of trash collection being delayed was 52.1%(1in our survey). 7. The present situation of environmental education of waste us lacking. Under present circumstances, the practice of public announcements for improvement and waste-paper collection has been going on vigorously but lacking in education as to the preparation of compositions for students the themes of public exhibitions, the organizing of voluntary associations should be part of the education system to reinforce student's awareness of proper waste disposal. 8. The most economical alternative for disposal was recycling usable waste or combustible material through a variety of education we can therefore educate students bring this education to their homes public servants will also be able to benefit in the waste disposal process with proper education. In conclusion we should intensify the systemical organization and the education of our waste disposal for a better environment.

In the preparation of Ag-coated Cu flakes using L-ascorbic acid as a reductant for the electroless Ag plating, the effects of pretreatment methods and the reductant concentration on the uniformity of Ag coating layer and the anti-oxidation property of Ag-coated Cu flakes during the heating in air were evaluated. It was found that the removal degree of surface oxide layer during the pretreatment has great influence on the uniformity of Ag coating layer and the formation degree of hole defects in the flakes has slight effect on the anti-oxidation property of Ag-coated Cu flakes. It was also verified that the reductant concentration has great influence on the coverage uniformity and thickness of Ag coating, thus it was could be considered a main process parameter. When the reductant concentration was 0.04 M, high-quality Ag-coated Cu flakes was obtained. When the concentration increased to 0.06 M, however, the anti-oxidation property of Ag-coated Cu flakes became remarkably worse owing to remnant of Cu surface non-coated with Ag by the formation of pure Ag fine particles.

In solar cell module manufacturing, single solar cells has to be joined electrically to strings. Copper stripes coated with tin-silver-copper alloy are joined on screen printed silver of solar cells which is called busbar. The bus bar collects the electrons generated in solar cell and it is connected to the next cell in the conventional module manufacturing by a metal stringer using conventional hot air or infrared lamp soldering systems. For thin solar cells, both soldering methods have disadvantages, which heats up the whole cell to high temperatures. Because of the different thermal expansion coefficient, mechanical stresses are induced in the solar cell. Recently, the trend of solar cell is toward thinner thickness below 180um and thus the risk of breakage of solar cells is increasing. This has led to the demand for new joining processes with high productivity and reduced error rates. In our project, we have developed a new method to solder solar cells with a laser heating source. The soldering process using diode laser with wavelength of 980nm was examined. The diode laser used has a maximum power of 60W and a scanner system is used to solder dimension of 6" solar cell and the beam travel speed is optimized. For clamping copper stripe to solar cell, zirconia(ZrO)coated iron pin-spring system is used to clamp both joining parts during a scanner system is traveled. The hot plate temperature that solar cell is positioned during lasersoldering process is optimized. Also, conventional solder joints after $180^{\circ}C$ peel tests are compared to the laser soldering methods. Microstructures in welded zone shows that the diffusion zone between solar cell and metal stripes is better formed than inIR soldering method. It is analyzed that the laser solder joints show no damages to the silicon wafer and no cracks beneath the contact. Peel strength between 4N and 5N are measured, with much shorter joining time than IR solder joints and it is shown that the use of laser soldering reduced the degree of bending of solar cell much less than IR soldering.

It has been known that the leakage current in the low field region consists of the dielectric relaxation current and intrinsic leakage current, which cause the charge loss in dynamic random access memory (DRAM) storage capacitor using (Ba,Sr)TiO$_{3}$ (BST) thin film. Especially, the dielectric relaxation current should be seriously considered since its magnitude is much larger than that of the intrinsic leakage current in giga-bit DRAM operation voltage (~IY). In this study, thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurement was at first applied to investigate the activation energy of traps and relative evaluation of the density of traps according to process change. And, through comparing TSC to early methods of I-V or I-t measurement and analyzing, we identify the origin of the dielectric relaxation current and investigate the reliability of TSC measurement. First, the polarization condition such as electric field, time, temperature and heating rate was investigated for reliable TSC measurement. From the TSC measurement, the energy level of traps in the BST thin film has been investigated and evaluated to be 0.20($\pm$0.01) eV and 0.45($\pm$0.02) eV. Based on the TSC measurement results before and after rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process, oxygen vacancy is concluded to be the origin of the traps. TSC characteristics with thermal annealing in the MIM BST capacitor have shown the same trends with the current-voltage (I-V) and current-time (I-t) characteristics. This means that the TSC measurement is one of the effective methods to characterize the traps in the BST thin film.
Purpose : The aim of this study is to measure the typical MR variables such as $T_1$- and $T_2$-relaxation times according to morphological characteristics of gold nanopartides as a preliminary study to perform theragnosis using local heating by gold nanopartides. Materials and Methods : Two types of gold nanoparticles were used. Spheres were synthesized by various methods and stirring speed. Rods were synthesized by adding various concentrations of sphere nanopartides. Gold nanopartides were mixed with 2% agarose gel at 1:1 ratio and then signals were acquired using a 1.5T MRI. For the measurements of $T_1$-and $T_2$-relaxation times, TR and TE were varied, respectively. The results were acquired through $T_1$ and $T_2$ curves based on the intensities of MR image using self-developed software. And Statistical analysis was performed. Results : $T_1$ times were measured 1.86 sec and 2.08 sec for sphere and rod, respectively. On the other hands, $T_2$ times were measured 57 ms and 35.45 ms for sphere and rod. Conclusion : The changes of the MR variables according to the morphological characteristics of the gold nanopartides were confirmed. Optimal MR imaging conditions can be obtained by choosing proper TR and TE according to the type of nanoparticles.

Waste activated sludge(WAS) collected from domestic wastewater treatment plant is biomass that contains large quantities of organic matter. However, relevant literature show that the bio-hydrogen yield using WAS was too low. In this study, the effect of pretreatment of WAS on hydrogen yield was investigated. Pretreatment includes acid and alkali treatments, grinding, heating, ozone and ultrasound methods. After pretreatment organic matters of WAS were solubilized and soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD) was increased by 14.6 times. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of pre-treatment methods and buffer solution, hydrogen partial pressure, and sodium ion on hydrogen production from WAS by using heated anaerobic mixed cultures. Experimental results showed that addition of buffer solution, efficient pre-treatment method with alkali solution, and gas sparging condition markedly increased the hydrogen yield to 0.52 mmol $H_2/g$-DS.
