  • In this study, the results are compared with the case of the concrete with embedded heating wire to verify the performance of the IB made in order to improve the workability and affordability, and to determine the effectiveness of early frost damage prevention. The IB was made using the 5W heating wire and layed on the upper surface of the concrete. The temperature was reduced to below 0℃ approximately within 24 hours, then approached the external temperature thereafter. On the other hand, when the 20W heating wire was used to make the IB and applied the same way, the temperature remained around -2 to 3℃ on the average even through the temperature was reduced to below 0℃, due to the heating wire with relatively large heating capacity. It appeared to reach 85% of the direct heating by embedding the heating wire relatively deeper in the concrete. However, it was determined that using the IB made with the 20W heating wire will prevent the early frost damage to some degree in -10℃.

  • In this paper, partial discharge (PD) measurement was performed to evaluate the quality of the cable joint and termination constructions. The resistive coupling technique for PD detection using resistivity of semiconducting layer of the cable in the accessories, such as joints and terminations. With high frequency PD (HEPD) measurement, an excellent sensitivity below 20pC could be achieved under unshielded condition. The localization of the defects in the accessories could be identified. During heating cycle, PDs were monitored and analyzed. At that time, the PDs were dependent on the temperature of the heating cycle and showed cyclic behaviors, which were attributed to local delamination of the interfaces, between epoxy unit and stress relief cone(SRC) and between SRC and cable, due to the difference of thermal expansion. As a conclusion, HFPD measurement technique was proven to be an effective diagnostic method for qualification of extra high voltage (EHV) cable accessories. With this technique, the optimal design of the components of the accessories could be verified not only in an early stage but also under operating condition. This technique would result in the improvement of the reliability of the EHV cable accessories.

  • For the design guide of a vessel operating in cold region, numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate the ice class louver which installed the heating cables by using ANSYS 13.0 CFX. The numerical analysis was performed by considering Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equation. This study based on the experimental results of ‘The Cryogenic Performance Evaluation for the Excellent De-icing Ice Class Louver’ in KRISO. For validation of the numerical analysis results, the cold chamber experimental data measured by the heat sensors in certain location of the ice class louver was used. The external environmental temperature which varies from 0℃ to –30℃ was considered in numerical analysis. Also the design guide for optimum de-icing presented through heating cable power capacity(33 W/m, 45 W/m, 66 W/m), location of the heating cable(front, center, behind on the blade) and relative velocity(1 m/s, 4 m/s, 7 m/s).

  • The heating roller of an actual pulse output device (POD) production facility is composed of a steel roller and a rubber roller. The time to reach a specific temperature and the temperature distribution on the roller surface were analyzed and compared according to the change in the number of cartridge heaters inside the heating roller. In this analysis, a steady-state thermal analysis of a steel roller was performed for the cases of a 5-cartridge heater and 9-cartridge heater. Finite element analysis was applied with reference to the surface temperature data of the heating roller during operation and the calorific value of the cartridge heater. Using the 9-cartridge heater, faster target temperature achievement and more uniform temperature distribution were confirmed than for the 5-cartridge heater.

  • Heating cables, widely used in office buildings, factories, streets and railways, deteriorate in electrical insulation during operation. The insulation deterioration of heating cables leads to electric discharges that can cause electrical fires. With this background, this paper dealt with a condition monitoring technique for heating cables by the analysis of discharge signals to prevent electrical fires. Insulation deterioration was simulated using an arc generator specified in UL1699 under AC operation, and the characteristic and propagation of discharge signals were analyzed on a 100 meter-long heating cable. Discharge signals produced by insulation deterioration were detected as a voltage pulse because they are as small as a few mV and they are attenuated through propagation path. The frequency spectrum of discharge signals mainly existed in the range from 70 kHz to 110 kHz, and the maximum attenuation of the signal was 84.8% at 100 meters away from the discharge point. Based on the experimental results, a monitoring device, which is composed of a high pass filter with the cut-off frequency of 70 kHz, a comparator, a wave shaper and a microprocessor, was designed and fabricated. Also, an algorithm was designed to discriminate the discharge signal in the presence of noise, compared with the pulse repetition period and the number of pulse counts per 100ms. In the experiment, the result showed that the prototype monitoring device could detect and discriminate the discharge signals produced at every discharge point on a heating cable.

  • This paper describes an optimal design of electric snow melting mat on vulnerable walk zone. In order to design an optimal electric power of snow melting mat and protect pedestrians with a nonslip mat, with considering protection of environmental pollution from abusing of the de-icing salts added calcium chloride. We analyzed nine snow melting mats through verification experiment in the condition of $-5^{\circ}C$, depending on three different kinds of heating material, electric heating cable, carbon heating film and carbon textile film. As a consequence, the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat for snow melting was identified as an optimal power input and functional performance for pedestrians' safety on vulnerable walk zone. It is expected that the $150W/m^2$ carbon textile film mat would be useful to reduce slip down accidents by human error.

  • To improve the mean-life and the reliability of power cable, we have investigated specific heat (Cp). Specific-heat measurement temperature ranges of XLPE insulator were from $20[^{\circ}C]$ to $90[^{\circ}C]$, and the heating rate was $1[^{\circ}C/min]$. In case of semiconducting materials, the measurement temperature ranges of specific heat were from $20[^{\circ}C]$ to $60[^{\circ}C]$ and the heating rate was $1[^{\circ}C/min]$. From these experimental results, both specific heat were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature. We could know that a small amount of CNT has a excellent thermal properties.

  • To improve mean-life and reliability of power cable, we have investigated specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity of XLPE insulator and semiconductive materials in 154kV underground power transmission cable. Specimens were respectively made of sheet form with EVA, EEA and EBA added 30wt%, carbon black, and the other was made of sheet form by cutting XLPE insulator in 154kV power cable. Specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity were· measured by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and Nano Flash Diffusivity. Specific-heat measurement temperature ranges of XLPE insulator were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 90[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min]. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were 25[$^{\circ}C$}], 55[$^{\circ}C$] and 90[$^{\circ}C$]. In case of semiconductive materials, the measurement temperature ranges of specific heat were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 60[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min]. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were 25[$^{\circ}C$] and 55[$^{\circ}C$]. From these experimental results, both specific heat and thermal conductivity were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature.
