The utility tunnels are the important facility as a mainstay of country because of the latest communication developments. However, the utilities tunnel is difficult to deal with in case of a fire accident. When a cable burns, the black smoke containing poisonous gas will be reduced. This black smoke goes into the tunnel, and makes it difficult to extinguish the fire. Therefore, when there was a fire in the utility tunnel, the central nerves of the country had been paralyzed, such as property damage, communication interruption, in addition to inconvenience for people. This paper is based on the fire occurred in the past, and reenacting the fire by making the real utilities tunnel model. The aim of this paper is the scientific analysis of the character image of the fire, and the verification of each fire protection system whether it works well after process of setting up a fire protection system in the utilities tunnel at a constant temperature. The fire experiment was equipped with the linear heat detector, the fire door, the connection water spray system and the ventilation system in the utilities tunnel. Fixed portion of an electric power supply cable was coated with a fire retardant coating, and a heating tube was covered with a fireproof. The result showed that the highest temperature was $932^{\circ}c$ and the linear heat detector was working at the constant temperature, and it pointed at the place of the fire on the receiving board, and Fixed portion of the electric power supply cable coated with the fire retardant coating did not work as the fireproof. The heating tube was covered with the fireproof about 30 minutes.

The short-term variation of salinity and temperature in a dyked estuarine environment is mainly controlled by the freshwater discharge from the dyke. We examined the distribution of salinity and temperature by the freshwater discharge in the Yeongsan River estuary using the CTD data obtained from 8 stations through three surveys in June (weak discharge) and August (intensive discharge), 2010. During the weak discharge in June, the surface salinity showed 30-32.5 psu and its horizontal gradient was relatively high around Goha-do (0.25~0.32 psu/km). On the other hand, the salinity of the bottom layer was almost constant in the range of 33 psu. Water temperature ranged $19{\sim}21^{\circ}C$ and displayed higher gradient in north-south direction than the gradient of east-west direction. During the intensive freshwater discharge on August 12, the salinity dropped to 9~26 psu. The maximum horizontal gradient of surface salinity reached 3.8 psu/km in the north of Goha-do where the strong salinity front was formed, and the horizontal salinity gradient of bottom layer was 0.28 psu/km. The horizontal gradient of water temperature was $-0.45^{\circ}C/km$ in the surface and $-0.12^{\circ}C/km$ in the bottom with high surface temperature near the dyke and decreasing gradually to the river mouth. After 3 days of the intensive discharge ($3^{rd}$ survey), the surface salinity increased to 22~26 psu. However, there still existed relatively high horizontal gradient around Goha-do. In the mean time, the bottom salinity decreased to 26.5~27.5 psu, but its gradient was not big as much as the surface gradient. According to time series of CTD profile near the dyke, the discharged fresh water jetted down temporarily and then recovered gradually with the recovering speed of 0.4 m/hour for the discharge case of $13{\times}10^6$ ton. Due to the combined effects of freshwater discharge and surface heating during the summer of 2010, the Yeongsan estuary, in general, underwent intensified vertical stratification, which in turn caused the inhibition of vertical mixing, especially inside area of estuary. Based on the spatial distribution of salinity and temperature, the Yeongsan estuary can be divided into three regions: the Goha-do area with strong horizontal gradient of salinity and temperature, inner estuary from Goha-do to the dyke with low salinity, and outer estuary from Goha-do to the coasts with relatively high salinity.
Press drying was used on sapwood and heartwood of oak (Qercus acutissima Carruthers) to find profitable means of drying low grade logs. This study was designed to investigate the process of press drying considering core temperature, current moisture content, drying rate, drying time, final moisture content, dimensional change and drying defects. The drying tests were conducted using 1.5 centimeter thick material at platen temperature of $175^{\circ}C$ and pressure of 35psi. The results were summarized as fallows. 1. Core temperature was divided into three stages of drying characterized by initial heating period, plateau temperature, and period of rising core temperature. Plateau temperature of heartwood material was higher and longer than that of sapwood material. 2. The predicting equation for change in drying rate of sapwood material was log y=-2.7925-0.0811x as function of time. That of heartwood material was log y=-3.3382-0.0468x. 3. Sapwood material reduced the moisture content from 59 to 2.5 percent in 45minutes. Heartwood material reduced the moisture content from 64 to 3.3 percent in 55 minutes. 4. Shrinkage during press drying were 20.4 percent in thickness direction and 2.5 percent in width direction. Recovery on equilibrium conditioning at 65 percent relative humidity and temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. were 11.4 percent in thickness direction and 49.4 percent in width direction. 5. Heartwood material developed severe honeycombing and moderate checking. The sapwood material dried without honeycombing, checking and collapse. All material kept wood flat.
An overdose of fossil fuel for greenhouse heating causes not only the high cost and low quality of agricultural products, but also the environmental pollution of farm village. To solve these problems it is desirable to maximize the solar energy utilization for the heating of greenhouse in winter season. In this study phase change materials were selected to store solar energy concentratively for heating the greenhouse and their characteristics of thermal energy storage were analyzed. The results were summarized as follows. The organic $C_{28}H_{58}$, and the inorganic $CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O\;and\;Na_2SO_4{\cdot}10H_2O$ were selected as low temperature latent heat storage materials. The equation of critical radius was derived to define the generating mechanism of the maximum latent heat of phase change materials. The melting point of $C_{28}H_{58}$ was $62^{\circ}C$, and the latent heat was $50.0{\sim}52.0kcal/kg$. The specific heat of liquid and solid phase was $0.54{\sim}0.69kcal/kg^{\circ}C$ and $0.57{\sim}0.75kcal/kg^{\circ}C$ respectively. The melting point of $CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O$ was $61{\sim}62^{\circ}C$, the latent heat was $64.9{\sim}65.8$ kcal/kg and the specific heat of liquid and solid phase was respectively $0.83kcal/kg^{\circ}C$ and $0.51{\sim}0.52kcal/kg^{\circ}C$. The melting point of $Na_2SO_4{\cdot}10H_2O$ was $30{\sim}30.9^{\circ}C$, the latent heat was 53.0 kcal/kg and the specific heat of liquid and solid phase was respectively $0.78{\sim}0.89kcal/kg^{\circ}C$ and $0.50{\sim}0.7kcal/kg^{\circ}C$ When the urea of 21.85% was added to control the melting point of $Na_2SO_4{\cdot}10H_2O$ and the phase change cycles were repeated from 0 to 600, the melting point was $16.7{\sim}16.0^{\circ}C$ and the latent heat was $36.0{\sim}28.0kcal/kg^{\circ}C$.

Utilization and interest of unconventional fuel and process residue such as oil sand and its residue, oil sand coke, have been increased because of the continuous rise of fuel price and conventional fuel availability. In this study, the gasification of oil sand coke produced from coking process of oil sand was performed to utilize as an energy resource using lab-scale fixed bed gasification system. The combustion characteristics of oil sand bitumen and oil sand coke were investigated by using TGA and lab-scale gasification system was applied to reveal the characteristics of produced syngas composition with oxygen/fuel ratio, temperature and steam injection rate. Oil sand coke shows a high carbon content, heating value and sulfur content and low ash content and reactivity. In case of oil sand coke gasification, generally with increasing temperature, the amount of steam introduced and decreasing oxygen injection rate, $H_2$ content in product gas increased while the $CO_2$ content decreased. The calorific value of syngas shows about $2100kcal/Nm^3$ and this result indicates that the oil sand coke can be used as a resource of hydrogen and fuel.

This study examined ways of improving the internal insulation performance of aging university buildings, and to enhance the convenience of occupants in university buildings and the insulation effect of aging buildings. This research was conducted to solve the problem of continuous requests for improving the insulation performance of office workers in the Nehemiah Hall building of Handong University. The results showed that the internal temperature of Nehemiah Hall was low compared to the internal temperature of the adjacent building. Considering the characteristics of the building, the university chose insulating materials under the theme of internal insulation. The experiment was conducted by installing internal wall insulation used in the market by producing a model room that miniaturized the university professor's office. Based on the experimental results, an economic evaluation was conducted to analyze the insulation effect by measuring the heating time and actual heat transmission coefficient. An economic evaluation was conducted by experiment and theory and on a winter and summer basis. According to the research, when an Isopink (30 T) was introduced as an internal insulation material in 60 offices of Nehemiah Hall, it could save up to 1,071,600 won in total during the winter season and 109,200 won during the summer season.
Turbulent fluxes of sensible heat and latent heat were analyzed at King Sejong station in the austral summer of 2002 (December) and 2003 (January and February). Monthly mean air temperatures of January and February (2.2oC) were similar to those averaged over 1988 to 2001. Precipitation was less in January and greater in February than those averaged over last 14 years. In December of 2002 and January, there was precipitation primarily when easterly wind blew usually. The frequency of snowfall was equal to or larger than that of rainfall. In the mean while, precipitation primarily in forms of rainfall occurred with westerly wind in February. In addition, while for easterly wind, temperature and humidity was low, temperature and humidity were high in case of westerly wind. Based on flux footprint, measured flux mainly came from within 300 m with maximum of 40 m upwind, indicating the insignificant role of the sea around the study site. Half-hourly downward short wave radiation amounted up to ∼ 1000 Wm-2 and net radiation ranged from -50 to 600 Wm-2. Half-hourly sensible heat flux was positive at daytime with maximum of ∼ 400 Wm-2, except the 27th and 28th in February of 2003 when it was negative all day despite of positive net radiation at short daytime. Latent heat flux was positive with maximum of ∼ 130 Wm-2. Depending on wind direction, the partitioning of net radiation into the sum of sensible heat flux and latent heat flux was larger than 0.8, indicating the strong source of the land surface for the atmospheric heating. The daytime averaged Bowen ratio (=sensible heat flux /latent heat flux) was significantly greater than 1, indicating that sensible heat flux was the main source to heat the atmosphere over the site.
Gelatinization behavior and morphology of epichlorohydrin-crosslinked potato starches (XPs) were investigated. Native potato starch showed a very steep single stage swlling pattern, but crosslinked starches showed various patterns with the degree of crosslinking. Swelling power, solubility and light transmittance were reduced drastically as the degree of crosslinking increased. Brabender initial pasting temperature and peak temperature of crosslinked starches increased because the crosslinking reinforces the intermolecular net work of the starches. Although the swelling of the potato starch granule was inhibited by crosslinking as compared to that of the native one, Brabender peak viscosities (6.5% w/v, db) were on the order of 2,500 units for the native potato starch, 3,700 for the XP with 2.300 anhydroglucose units per crosslinking (AGU/CL) and 3,400 for the XP with 2,100 AGU/CL, due to the decreased breakdown of the swollen granule resulting from the resistance to heat and shear. The XP with 1,900 AGU/CL, however, did not show the peak viscosity and the viscosity was on the order of 500 units because of the excessive unhibition of the swelling. Unlike the native potato starch, 6.5%(m/v, db) pastes of the crosslinked potato starches could form gels, which could be predicted from the Brabender setback and consistency index. When the degree of crosslinking is low, random contraction and radial swelling of the granule was possible. As the degree of crosslinking increased, morphological change became similar to the single dimensional tangential swelling observed from the lenticular wheat starch. These morphological change during heating in excess water explained the gelatinization behaviors of crosslinked starches tested.

Damages of wooden cultural heritages caused by various bio-species have been a trend that is increasing on climate change. The decay and bio-damage caused by microbial organisms or insect species are also known to factors of the shape changes and structural problems of wooden cultural heritages. There are so many phenomenons of damage and weathering in wooden cultural heritage for many years and particularly termite can threaten seriously wooden cultural heritage. We investigated with respect to internal and external environment and termite inhabitation around the wooden cultural heritage in Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Jeju-do. As this investigation results, we confirmed that there were the difference in between resident and non-resident about temperature, humidity, moisture contents of wooden building. Resident building is high temperature but humidity and moisture contents is low and these factors are sources of inhabitation condition change about insects as termites. Now we suggest to carry out in parallel to the target wooden cultural heritage and the surrounding habitat for wooden cultural heritage termite damage investigation. Also with the chemical control methods, we must consider necessary to present eco-friendly control management such as construction of heating facilities, residential status, periodic management.

This study investigated the effects of thawing conditions on physiological activities and quality of peeled garlic. Peeled frozen garlic was analyzed after thawing at low temperature ($4^{\circ}C$), room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$), tap water ($20^{\circ}C$), radio frequency of 27.12 MHz, and 2.45 GHz in a microwave. As a result, the time required to thaw garlic to $0^{\circ}C$ by various thawing methods was shortest at2.45 GHz in a microwave, followed by $20^{\circ}C$ tap water, radio frequency of 27.12 MHz, $20^{\circ}C$, and $4^{\circ}C$. Microwave thawing was faster than other methods, but it resulted in significant non-uniformity of heating. The hardness of peeled garlic significantly decreased upon freeze-thawing, whereas it showed improved hardness upon radio-frequency thawing. Total color difference in garlic increased upon freeze-thawing, and it was not improved by various thawing methods. Antioxidant activities were determined for DPPH radical scavenging ability, SOD-like activity, and reducing power. Total phenolic compounds and flavonoids in garlic extract were measured as $3.222{\pm}0.214{\mu}g$ GAE/g and $0.149{\pm}0.03{\mu}g$ QE/g, respectively. The content of total phenolic compounds was significantly reduced by 2.45 GHz microwave thawing ($1.90{\pm}0.02{\mu}g$ GAE/g); however, flavonoid contents were slightly reduced under freezing and thawing conditions. The DPPH radical scavenging ability of garlic extracts was not affected by thawing methods; however, SOD-like activity and reducing power were slightly reduced by freeze-thawing. These results indicate that physiological activities were not improved by radio-frequency thawing; however, thawing time and maintain hardness were reduced compared with conventional thawing methods.
