  • In this study, we investigated the traits of the clad metals used in hot-rolled clad steel plates. We examined the sensitization and mechanical properties of STS 316 steel plate and carbon steel (A516) under the specific circumstances of post heat treatment and whether a weld was multilayered and thick or repeated because of repairs. The test conditions were as follows. The clad steel plates were butt-welded using FCAW/SAW, and the heat treatment was conducted at $625^{\circ}C$, for 80, 160, 320, 640, or 1280 min. The change in the corrosion resistance was evaluated in these specimens. In the case of the carbon steel (A516), as the heat treatment time increased, the annealing effect caused the tensile strength to decrease. The micro- hardness gradually increased and then decreased after 640 min. The elongation and contraction of the area increased gradually. An oxalic acid etch test and EPR test on STS316, a clad metal, showed a STEP structure and no sensitization. From the test results for the multi-layered and repair welds, it could be concluded that there is no effect on the corrosion resistance of clad metals. In summary, the purpose of this study was to suggest some considerations when developing on-site techniques and evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels.

  • In this study, effect of Si content on nugget diameter in electric resistance spot welded dual-phase(DP) steel was investigated. The cold rolled DP steels with different Si content (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt.%) were used and thickness of those sheet was 1.2mm. With increasing Si content, nugget diameter was increased at the same welding current. This is attributed to increase of heat input result from high resistivity. Also, nugget diameter was increased with an increase in Si content for the same heat input. For this reason, the melting point of DP steel is lowered with an increase in the Si content. And solid DP steel can easily be transformed to a liquid phase because the low melting point. Finally, a prediction formula for the nugget diameter(N.D.) could be obtained in terms of heat input(Q) and melting point(M.P) as follows: N.D.(mm) = 0.11Q(J) - 0.0031 M.P.($^{\circ}C$) + 0.32.

  • The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of fire resistance steel for frame structure and heat affected zone (HAZ) by the one side Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). In this paper, the fatigue crack growth behavior was investigated with the compact tension specimen of base metal and the HAZ according to chemical composition and rolling end temperature, respectively. And the acoustic emission signals obtained from the fatigue test were analyzed by the time-frequency analysis method as a nondestructive evaluation. Main results obtained are summarized as follows; The hardness was appeared softening phenomenon that weld metal and HAZ are lower than that of base metal. Fatigue life of welded specimen was longer than that of base metal. m was 3~4.5 in base metal and 3.8~5.8 in HAZ. The main frequency range of acoustic emission signal analyzed from time-frequency method is different with the range by noise and crack. Also, it could be classified that it was also generated by fracture mechanics of dimple, inclusion etc.

  • Corrosion fatigue cracking of the austenitic stainless steel(bese metal & heat affected zone by TIG weld) was studied experimentally under the environments of various specific resistance and air. The characteristics of corrosion fatigue crack growth rate and the environmental constants of paris' rule were investigated for SUS 304 weldments in the various specific resistance. The influences of stress intensity factor range and corrosion on the crack growth rate were compared. The characteristics of corrosion fatigue cracking for the weldments were inspected from mechanical, electrochemical and microstructural point of view. Main results obtained are as follows: 1) As the specific resistance decreases, the environmental constant C of paris'rule increases(hence the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate is rapid), but the environmental constant m decreases, so the effect of corrosion to the crack growth rate is more susceptible than thet of stress intensity factor range. 2) As the stress intensity factor range decreases, the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of heat affected zone is more susceptible than that of the base metal. 3) The corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of the heat affected zone is more rapid than that of the base metal, because of the phenomenon of softening and the less noble potential coused by wedlding heat cycle. 4) The corrosion fatigue cracking of SUS 304 weldment appears transgranular fracture.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different yarn twisting methods on physical properties. Plain single jersey structured fabrics were knitted from Kevlar yarn, and from Kevlar/HPPE, and from Kevlar/Basalt fiber, and from Kevlar/Glass fiber and Kevlar/Stainless steel fiber blended and core-spun yarns. and then, The fabrics were coated NBR Latex. The physical properties, including tear strength, modulus, degree of penetration, heat resistance, and cut resistance of the knitted fabrics were investigated and compared. Kevlar/HPPE blended yarn fabrics recorded the highest heat resistance (13 Sec.). and Kevlar/HPPE blended yarn fabrics had good cut resistance (Cut Level 4).

  • The effects of added elements, such as Co or Nb, on wear properties of high speed steel by powder metaliurgy(PM-HSS) had been eluminated in auther's previous paper. In addition, it is generally known that the wear properties of materials have been influenced by heat-treating conditions as well. Therefore, a study has been done to clarify the effects of heat-treating conditions on wear properties of PM-HSS. The wear tests have been performed under the same conditions as the previous paper using heat-treated PM-HSS(5%Co-1%Nb) with different quenching and tempering temperatures. The result of this paper shows that wear resistance of PM-HSS is improved with relatively high quenching temperature. However, tempering temperature is not sensitive to the wear resistance in the range of high quenching temperature. It may be deduced by the fact that the shear strength of matrix by strengthening mechanisms due to not only the quenching aging but also dispersion-hardening is improved.

  • The metallurgical and mechanical characteristics, toughness and corrosion resistance of dissimilar welds between super duplex stainless steel UNS S32750 and carbon steel ASTM A516Gr.70 have been evaluated. Three heat inputs of 21.12, 24.00, 26.88kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with flux cored arc welding(FCAW). Based on microstructural examination, vermicular ferrite was formed in the first layer of weld at low heat input(21.12kJ/cm) and $Cr_{eq}/Ni_{eq}$ of 1.61 while acicular ferrite was formed in last layer of weld at high heat input(26.88kJ/cm) and $Cr_{eq}/Ni_{eq}$ of 1.72. Ferrite percentage in dissimilar welds was lowest in the first layer of weld regardless of heat inputs and it gradually increased in the second and third layers of weld. Heat affected zone showed higher hardness than the weld metal although reheated zone showed lower hardness than weld metal due to the formation of secondary austenite. Tensile strengths of dissimilar welds increased with heat input and there was 100MPa difference. The corrosion test by ferric chloride solution showed that carbon steel had poor corrosion resistance and pitting corrosion occurred in the first layer(root pass) of weld due to the presence of reheated zone where secondary austenite was formed. The salt spray test of carbon steel showed that the surface only corroded but the amount of weight loss was extremely low.

  • Recently the alloy development of duplex stainless steel has been done. On this study we studied the effect of the corrosion resistance according to the composition variety of C, Cr, N in the alloy elements of duplex stainless steel. materials which have below 0.1[mm/year] corrosion rate enable to use for corrosion-resisting materials, generally. On this experiment we inspected the effect of the composition variety of C, Cr, N in duplex stainless steel and the heat treatment, which the condition was the water quenching after the heat treatment for 1hr. The experiment was done on the basis of the ASTM G48A test, Critical pitting temperature(CPT), and ASTM G-61(Electrochemical tests for cyclic polarization).
