  • In the present study, coating corrosion characteristics of the heat exchanger for sea water are experimentally investigated. Coating types by a teflon, an electrodeposition and a ceramic+silicon were tested and compared with the corrosion characteristics of an aluminum. For the acceleration of corrosion by sea water, the temperature of sea water $70^{\circ}C$ and the concentration of salt 3.5% were considered. And the specimens were immersed in sea water during 9 weeks. Coating corrosion characteristics were measured by using the impedance method and SEM. Experimental results showed that polarization resistances obtained from Bode plot were related to the corrosion resistance of coating types, and the corrosion resistance of double coating were maintained during 4 weeks. From SEM photograph, we saw that blisters was generated on the interface between metal and coating.

  • In this study, a performance evaluation was conducted using a SUS 304 plate applied to low-temperature co-fired coating as a replacement for titanium plates. As a result of computational fluid dynamic analysis, the SUS 304 plate, applied to low-temperature co-fired coating, showed better heat transfer performance than a titanium plate, for 100 micron thickness coating. The result of the experiments using an actual heat exchanger revealed that a coated SUS 304 plate showed better heat transfer performance than a titanium plate. Furthermore, as the degree of corrosion and scale formation of the plate was confirmed through an overhaul inspection, the corrosion resistance of a coated SUS 304 plate was found to be almost the same as that of a titanium plate, and the inhibition effect of scale formation by sea water was better with a coated SUS 304 plate.

  • Laser welding has the advantage of high welding speed and Provides low heat distortion Thus laser welding is a very attractive process for joining thin steel sheet and surface treated steel sheet. And the major item in market for surface treated steel sheet is zinc coated steel. However. the laser welding of zinc coated steel is very difficult because of its low boiling point. Compared with zinc, on the other hand, aluminum has a high boiling point. Thus, laser weldability of aluminized steel is better than that of zinc coated steel. Moreover aluminized steel sheet is a material with excellent heat resistance, thermal reflection and corrosion resistance. The results of laser weldability of the aluminized steel for the full penetration welding will be described in this paper We focused on the investigation of the phenomenons caused by coating condition and behavior of aluminum in weld.

  • To study the effect of TiC coating on weight change, microhardness, wear and heat - resistance of TiC layer, chemical vapour deposition on the various substrates has been carried out with the gaseous mixture of TiCl4, toluene, and H2 in the temperature range of 900 - 1000$^{\circ}C$. The results obtained are as follows ; (1) There is a limited value of carrier and reductant H2 gas flow rate, above which deteriorate effect on the TiC depoition arises (2) Increased thickness of TiC layer was resulted with increasing temperature and time. Better deposition was obtained with stainless steels and the best results were introduced by cobalt coating of substrates. (3) Wear resistance of the TiC coated specimen improved markedly. Heat resistivity of the coated steel showed excellent result, whereas the coated stainless Steels were infer-ior to the substrate.

  • Plasma ceramic spray that is applied on a machine part under severe work conditions has been investigated for tribological behavior. The application of ceramic coatings by plasma spray has become essential in tribosystems to produce wear resistance and long life in severe conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the wear characteristics of $8\%Y_{2}O_3-ZrO_2$ coating, in view of the effect of post-spay heat treatment. The plasma-sprayed $8\%Y_{2}O_3-ZrO_2$ coating was studied to know the relationship between phase transformations and wear behavior related to post-spray heat treatment. Wear test was carried out with ball on disk type on normal loads of 50N,70N and 90N under room temperature. The phase transformation of phase and the value of residual stress were measured by X-ray diffraction method(XRD). Tribological characteristics and wear mechanisms of coatings were observed by SEM. The tribological wear performance was discussed in the focusing of residual stress. Consequently, post-spray heat treatment plays an important role in decreasing residual stress. Residual stress in the coating system has a significant influence on the wear mechanism of coating.

  • To improve the thermal resistance of a porous borosilicate lining block, we prepared and applied polysiloxane-fumed silica-ethanol slurry on top of the block and fired the coating layer using a torch for 5 minutes at $800^{\circ}C$. We conducted magnified characterizations using a microscope and XRD analysis to observe phase transformations, and TGA-DTA analysis to determine the thermal resistance. Thermal characterizations showed improved heat resistance with relatively high polysiloxane content slurry. Cross-sectional optical microscope observation showed less melting near the surface and decreased pore formation area with higher polysiloxane content slurry. XRD analysis revealed that the block and coating layer were amorphous phases. TGA-DTA analysis showed an endothermic reaction at around $550^{\circ}C$ as the polysiloxane in the coating layer reacted to form SiOC. Therefore, coating polysiloxane on a borosilicate block contributes to preventing the melting of the block at temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to further improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the Ni-P coatings of electroless plating, electroless Ni-P/n-$Al_2O_3$ composite deposits were prepared by adding some nano $Al_2O_3$ Particles in Ni-P plating bath. The bath composition and proproties were studied in this paper. The orthogonal test was applied in order to get the new composite solution, taking the initial stable potential as evaluation standard and considering the elements correlation at the same time. The processing parameters have been optimized by single factor experiment in which the depositing speed was chosen as the evaluation standard. The results showed that the process is stable and the composite Ni-P/n-$Al_2O_3$ deposits werebright and smooth, whose hardness and corrosion resistance are much better than simple Ni-P coatings. Furthermore the surface appearance and structure of the composite Ni-P/n-$Al_2O_3$ coating were investigated by SEM and XRD method. It was proved that the coating surface is typical cystiform cells and its structure is amorphous. All test results ofcomposite coating showed that all various physical coating properties had been improved by adding nano-particles. The hardness of optimal coating is more than 600HV and increases to 1000HV after heat-treating, and its hardness is 20~50% higher than Ni-P coating. The rust points appeared in 200 hour by immersing the coating into the 10%HCl solution and the corrosive speed is $3{\times}10^{-3}mg/(cm^2{\cdot}h)$which was obtained after 300 hour. In the same condition Ni-P coating is $5.6{\times}10^{-3}mg/(cm^2{\cdot}h)$. The salt spray resistance of the layers can exceed 600h with the thickness $20{\mu}m$.

  • Strong adhesion of a silicon carbide (SiC) coating to a WC-Co substrate was achieved through an ion beam mixing technique and the corrosion resistance of the SiC coated WC-Co was investigated by means of a potentiodynamic electrochemical test. In a 1 M NaOH solution, the corrosion current density of SiC-coated WC-Co after heat treatment at 500$^{\circ}C$ was about 50 times lower than that for the as-received WC-Co. In addition, the corrosion resistance systematically increases with increasing the SiC coating thickness. On the other hand, for a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution, the corrosion current density for SiC-coated WC-Co was about 3 times lower than that for the as-received WC-Co. We discuss the physical reasons for the changes in the corrosion current density with the different electrolytes.

  • Magnesium alloy have good physical properties such as good castability, good vibration absorption, high strength/weight ratios. Despite the desirable properties, the poor resistance of Mg alloy impedes their use in many various applications. Therefore, magnesium alloy require surface treatment to improve hardness, corrosion and wear resistance. Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) is one the surface treatment methods to form oxide layer on Mg alloy in alkali electrolyte. In comparison with Anodizing, there is environmental process having higher hardness and faster deposition rate. In this study, the characteristics of oxide film were examined after coating the AZ31 Mg alloy through the PEO process. We changed concentration of sodium aluminate into $K_2ZrF_6$, KF base electrolyte. The morphologies of the coating layer were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion resistance also investigated by potentiodynamic polarization analysis. As a result, propertiy of oxide layer were changed by concentration of sodium aluminate. Increasing with concentration of sodium aluminate in electrolyte, the oxidation layer was denser and the pore size was smaller on the surface.
