Ultrasound thermography detects defects by radiating 20 ~ 30 kHz ultrasound waves to the samples and capturing the heat generated from the defects with the use of an infrared thermographic camera. This technology is being spotlighted as a next-generation NDE for the automobile and aerospace industries because it can test large areas and can detect defects such as cracks and exfoliations in real time. The heating mechanism of the ultrasound vibration has not been accurately determined, but the thermomechanical coupling effect and the surface or internal friction are estimated to be the main causes. When this heat is captured by an infrared thermographic camera, the defects inside or on the surface of objects can be quickly detected. Although this technology can construct a testing device relatively simply and can detect defects within a short time, there are no reliable data about the factors related to its detection ability. In this study, the ultrasound thermography technique was used to manufacture gasoline and diesel engine piston specimens, and nondestructive reliability tests to verify the applicability and validity of the ultrasound thermography technique.

An experimental study was performed to examine the heat and mass transfer characteristics of $LiBr-H_2O$ solution flowing over a single horizontal tube with the water vapor absorption. Effects of the flow rate and the temperature of the solution at the top of the tube, the absorber pressure and the drainage pattern were considered. The absorption rate depends highly on the absorber pressure at the low flow rate condition while on the solution inlet temperature at the high flow rate condition. Also, when the flow rate is low, the absorption performance with the sheet flow drainage appeared to be higher than that with the dripping/jet drainage. However, at the high flow rate condition, the case became reversed. The liquid film became wavy with the higher absorption rate. The waves were more probable to form with the lower flow rate and temperature of the solution, and with the higher absorber pressure.
The objective of this study is a qualitative comparison between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence ($OH{\ast}$) image and its Abel inversion image at different phase of the oscillating pressure field. PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were conducted under non-reacting conditions to see the global flow structure. Also NOx emission was measured to investigate the effect of fuel-air premixing on combustion instability and emission characteristics. Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. Combustion instabilities in present study exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ${\sim}341.8$ Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instability occurred. Results gave an insight about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. Also an additional information on active control to suppress the combustion instabilities was obtained. For lean premixed combustion, strong correlation between $OH{\ast}$ and NOx emissions was expected largely due to the exponential dependence of thermal NOx mechanism on flame temperature.

This paper presents an analytic and numerical simulation of the generation and propagation of pico-second ultrasound with nano-scale wavelength, enabling the production of bulk waves in thin films. An analytic model of laser-matter interaction and elasto-dynamic wave propagation is introduced to calculate the elastic strain pulse in microstructures. The model includes the laser-pulse absorption on the material surface, heat transfer from a photon to the elastic energy of a phonon, and acoustic wave propagation to formulate the governing equations of ultra-short ultrasound. The excitation and propagation of acoustic pulses produced by ultra-short laser pulses are numerically simulated for an aluminum substrate using the finite-difference method and compared with the analytical solution. Furthermore, Fourier analysis was performed to investigate the frequency spectrum of the simulated elastic wave pulse. It is concluded that a pico-second bulk wave with a very high frequency of up to hundreds of gigahertz is successfully generated in metals using a 100-fs laser pulse and that it can be propagated in the direction of thickness for thickness less than 100 nm.
As climate change due to global warming continues to be accelerated, various extreme events become more intense, more likely to occur and longer-lasting on a much larger scale. Recent studies show that global warming acts as the primary driver of extreme events and that heat-related extreme events should be attributed to anthropogenic global warming. Among them, both terrestrial and marine heat waves are great concerns for human beings as well as ecosystems. Taking place around the world, one of those events appeared over East Sea in July 2021 with record-breaking high temperature. Meanwhile, climate condition around East Sea was favorable for anomalous warming with less total cloud cover, more incoming solar radiation, and shorter period of Changma rainfall. According to the results of wave activity flux analysis, highly activated meridional mode of teleconnection that links western North Pacific to East Asia caused localized warming over East Sea to become stronger.
Heat waves during summer cause a qualitative degradation in urban environments and increases the number of patients who suffer from heat-related illnesses, and the urbanization deepens these problems. It is a prerequisite to analyze the current status accurately in order to assess the urban heat island phenomenon. Thus, this study aims to collect weather measurements information at the occurrence of a severe heat wave in Seoul, thereby allowing analysis of information, which will also consider the land use type. The weather measurement information used in the analysis had an advantage, as the gap between measured locations is considerably shorter than before due to the miniaturization of the automatic weather systems (AWS), which are connected through the communication network. Based on the above collected information, a temporal change in the data due to land use type was analyzed. As a result, the difference in temperature change in response to the land use type could be compared, as could the occurrence pattern of the tropical night phenomenon, and the effect on temperature reduction in green belt areas could be identified through the comparison of the intensity of heat island by time and land use. The methods and results derived in this study through the comparative analysis in terms of time and land use, weather information measurements, and mapping can be utilized as foundational data that can be referred to in urban planning to reduce the heat island phenomenon in the future.

The frequency and scale of natural disasters due to the abnormal climate phenomena caused by global warming have being increasing all over the world. Various natural disasters, such as typhoons, earthquakes, floods, heavy rain, drought, sweltering heat, wind waves, tsunamis and so on, can cause damage to human life. Especially, the damage caused by natural disasters such as the Earthquake of Japan, hurricane Katrina in the United States, typhoon Maemi and so on, have been enormous. At this stage, it is difficult to estimate the scale of damage due to (future) natural disasters and cope with them. However, if we could predict the scale of damage at the disaster response level, the damage could be reduced by responding to them promptly. In the present study, therefore, among the many types of natural disaster, we developed a function to estimate the damage due to wind waves caused by sea winds and waves. We collected the damage records from the Disaster Report ('91~'14) published by the Ministry of Public Safety and Security about wind waves and typhoons in the western coastal zone and, in order to reflect the inflation rate, we converted the amount of damage each year into the equivalent amount in 2014. Finally, the meteorological data, such as the wave height, wind speed, tide level, wave direction, wave period and so on, were collected from the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) and KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency)'s web sites, for the periods when wind wave and typhoon damage occurred. After that, the function used to estimate the wind wave damage was developed by reflecting the regional characteristics for the 9 areas of the western coastal zone.

Purpose: Quick freezing is widely used in commercial food storage. Well-known freezing techniques such as individual quick freezing require a low-temperature coolant and small cuts for the heat-transfer efficiency. However, the freezing method for bulk food resembles techniques used in the 1970s. In this study, electromagnetic (EM) heating was applied to improve the quick freezing of bulk food. Methods: During freezing, the surface of food can be rapidly cooled by an outside coolant, but the inner parts of the food cool slowly owing to the latent heat from the phase change. EM waves can directly heat the inner parts of food to prevent it from freezing until the outer parts finish their phase change and are cooled rapidly. The center temperature of garlic cloves was probed with optical thermo sensors while liquid nitrogen (LN) was sprayed. Results: When EM heating was applied, the center cooling time of the garlic cloves from freezing until $-10^{\circ}C$ was 48 s, which was approximately half the value of 85 s obtained without EM heating. For the white radish cubes, the center cooling time was also improved, from 288 to 132 s. The samples frozen by LN spray with EM heating had a closer hardness to the unfrozen samples than the samples frozen by LN only. Conclusions: The EM heating during quick freezing functions to maintain the hardness of fresh food by reducing the freezing time from 0 to $-10^{\circ}C$.
The present study examines the micro-pattern replication on a plastic film using ultrasonic imprinting. Ultrasonic imprinting uses ultrasonic waves to generate repetitive microscale deformation in the polymer film. The resulting deformation heat on the surface of the film causes the surface region to soften sufficiently so that a replication of the micro-pattern can be obtained. To successfully replicate the micro-pattern on a large area of polymer film, a high replication ratio is needed as well as good uniformity over the entire region. In this study, a horn design is investigated by finite element analysis and is optimized through a response surface analysis. In the ultrasonic imprinting experiments, the response surface method was also used to determine the optimal processing conditions for better replication characteristics.
An ultrasonic testing uses the directivity of the ultrasonic wave which propagates in one direction. The directivity is expressed as the relationship between the propagate direction and its sound pressure. The directivity of ultrasonic wave is related to determination of testing sensitivity, scanning pitch and defect location. This paper investigated the directivity of ultrasonic wave, which scattered from slit defect located in heat-affected zone (HAZ) in butt joint using visualization method. The directivity of shear waves scattered from slit defect were different according to probe direction (far defect, near defect) and probe position (forward movement, maximum echo position, backward movement). The difference of directivity of reflection wave was existed between 2 MHz and 4 MHz angle probes. In the case of 2 MHz angle probe, the directivity of reflection wave was appeared sharp form because of the relation wave length and defect size.
