  • In a reciprocating compressor, highly impulsive pressure fluctuations induced by a reciprocating piston give rise to serious noise and vibration problems. A muffler is frequently used to reduce this impulsive noise, but also has adverse effects on compressor performance due to additional pressure drop and heat transfer of refrigerants through it. Therefore, the flow and acoustic performances of mufflers used in a compressor should be considered simultaneously. In this study, both of flow and acoustic performances of mufflers are investigated using computational fluid dynamic techniques by solving full three-dimensional compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. For validation purpose, the numerical method is initially applied to predict the transmission loss of a simple expansion muffler, and its predicted results show good agreements with theoretical and experimental results. Then, the flow and acoustic performances of an existing muffler is numerically investigated. On the basis of the analysis results, a new muffler is purposed and its performances are compared with the existing one. Improved performances of the new muffler are confirmed.

  • There are various methods in the flat panel display manufacture. The cost reduction effect is very big in case of using the screen printing method. The screen printing method is much used in the process of forming PDP barrier and can apply to the process of arranging the pillars for maintaining the vacuum gap of the vacuum glazing panel. The pillar which is one of the core elements for comprising vacuum glazing maintains the vacuum gap overcoming the vacuum pressure difference with the atmospheric pressure generated in vacuum glazing. At the same time, the deformation phenomenon by vacuum pressure is relived. In this paper, by using FEM about three considered in the pillar design and arrangement kinds of limiting factors, the simulation was performed. The pillar optimum arrangement method at within the maximum allowable tensile stress and heat transfer coefficients according to the arrangement try to be presented based upon the analyzed result data review and this validity tries to be verified by FEM.

  • An experimental investigation was executed to determine the capacity degradation due to fin conduction and non-uniform refrigerant distribution in a multi-path evaporator with cross-counter flow. The finned-tube evaporator, which had a three-path and three-depth-row, was tested by controlling inlet quality, exit pressure, and exit superheat for each refrigerant path. The capacity reduction due to superheat unbalance between each path was as much as $25\%$ for non-cutting evaporator, even when the overall evaporator superheat was kept at a target value of $5.6^{\circ}C$. It indicates that the internal heat transfer within the evaporator assembly causes the partial capacity drop. The capacity of cutting-evaporator with respect to non-cutting evaporator was enhanced according to the increment of air flow rate when superheat or superheat unbalance increased.

  • This work is aimed at estimating the effects of various factors on the energy consumption of Korean-style apartment houses using TRNSYS. The factors considered here include the nominal size of floor area, type of remodeling, azimuth, sidewall insulation, and window type. Based on some assumptions, an actual apartment house is simplified into a model that is used for thermal load calculations. The simplified model is validated by showing a good agreement with the actual one in the predicted result. Remodeling balconies into unconditioned buffer spaces yields a favorable thermal performance in comparison with the original type regardless of the nominal size. Incorporating balconies into a conditioned indoor space leads to sharp increases in thermal loads, which must be avoided in view of energy conservation as well as structural problem. A quantitative assessment on the azimuthal effect indicates that the heating energy can be saved up to 16% by taking the south or southeast direction. Reduction in the heating load with enhancing the sidewall insulation is gradual, so that a cost-effectiveness analysis may be needed when amending the regulations concerned. Glazing appears to significantly affect the heat transfer through window. A typical case illustrates that the heating load is decreased about 25% by simply adopting triple glazing instead of double glazing.

  • Internal Insulation system is applied to the most apartment building in Korea. However due to the importance of building energy enhanced the interest of the exernal insulation system. The extermal insulation system has better thermal performance because the thermal bridge through the structure are rarely formed. But the thermal bridge around the window decrease the thermal performance of the envelope system. Therefore the technology for reducing the thermal bridge around window improves energy efficiency of the building. In order to this it is necessary to minimize the thermal bridge around window of building. In this study it is aimed to minimize the thermal bridge around the window of building. It was confirmed that the use of thermal bridge barrier imporved the heat transfer rate by 64% or more and the condensation reduction phenomenon by 42% or more compared with the exist technology. These thermal bridge barrier will be used as the main technology to improve the energy efficiency of building.

  • Simulation studies on catalytic methanation reaction in externally cooled tubular reactor filled with monolithic catalysts were carried out using a general purpose modelling tool $gPROMS^{(R)}$. We investigated the effects of operating parameters such as gas space velocity, temperature and pressure of feeding gas on temperature distribution inside the reactor, overall CO conversion, and chemical composition of product gas. In general, performance of methanation reaction is favored under low temperature and high pressure for a wide range of their values. However, methane production becomes negligible at temperatures below 573K when the reactor temperature is not high enough to ignite methanation reaction. Capacity enhancement of the reactor by increasing gas space velocity and/or gas inlet pressure resulted no significant reduction in reactor performance and heat transfer property of catalyst.

  • A brushless direct current (BLDC) motor electronically performs rectification without brushes. It therefore does not have the typical mechanical friction contacts between the brushes and commutators. The BLDC motor has the advantages of high speed, low noise, and electronic noise reduction in addition to high durability and reliability. Therefore, it is mainly used in electric vehicles and electric equipment. However, iron loss and copper loss due to long-term use induce temperature increases in the motor, which reduces its performance and life. The temperatures of the stator and permanent magnet are predicted to be $62.3^{\circ}C$ and $32.2^{\circ}C$, respectively. This study shows the enhanced temperature distribution in a 600 W BLDC motor using unsteady and three-dimensional (3D) numerical investigations validated with experimental data.

  • Lean combustion was applied to improve the thermal efficiency and emission in a single-cylinder, spark-ignition engine fueled with syngas. Under naturally aspirated conditions, the lean combustion significantly improved the thermal efficiency compared to the stoichiometric combustion, mainly due to the reduction in heat transfer loss. Intake air boost was applied to compensate the low power output of the lean combustion. The gross indicated power of 24.8 kW was achieved by increasing the intake pressure up to 1.6 bar at excess air ratio of 2.2. The nitrogen oxides showed near zero level, but the carbon monoxide emission was significant.

  • In the present study, the cavity module of the MELCOR code is used for the simulation of molten corium concrete interaction (MCCI) during the late phase of postulated large break loss of coolant (LB-LOCA) accident in the APR1400 reactor design. Using the molten corium composition data from previous MELCOR Simulation of APR1400 under LB-LOCA accident, the ex-vessel phases of the accident sequences with long-term MCCI are recalculated with stand-alone cavity package of the MELCOR code to investigate the impact of water ingression and melt eruption models which were hitherto absent in MELCOR code. Significant changes in the MCCI behaviors in terms of the heat transfer rates, amount of gases released, and maximum cavity ablation depths are observed and reported in this study. Most especially, the incorporation of these models in the new release of MELCOR code has led to the reduction of the maximum ablation depth in radial and axial directions by ~38% and ~32%, respectively. These impacts are substantial enough to change the conclusions earlier reached by researchers who had used the older versions of the MELCOR code for their studies. and it could also impact the estimated cost of the severe accident mitigation system in the APR1400 reactor.

  • The heat generated at the motor and inverter inside the electric compressor of inverter built-in type is mainly cooled by refrigerant and generally, there is not a thermal problem. However, the close relation of heat transfer from the motor and inverter parts to the compression part affects on compressor efficiency. Also, according to the surrounding environment and system operation condition, the increased temperature of the motor and inverter can affect the power density of the motor system, and especially, the inverter may be prevented to operate by the temperature limits. In this study, we performed thermo-flow analysis of electric compressor motor system, and investigated the heat dissipation enhancement of the motor and inverter. The motor part in the operation region of the electric compressor was generally maintained at low temperature and the inverter part at high compressor speed was lower temperature than the temperature limit of $85^{\circ}C$. However, the case of the inverter at low speed harsh condition was in excess of $10^{\circ}C$. Therefore, in order to solve the thermal problem, the heat reduction technology of the motor and inverter is essential as well as the improvement of flow path in the compressor.
