  • A prediction of penetration and heat affected zone by using Finite Element Method in CO$_{2}$ Arc Welding has been discussed this paper. The temperature distribution of a base metal produced by the CO$_{2}$ arc welding processing is analyzed by using a three dimensional finite element model. The common finite element program ANSYS 4.4A was employed to obtain the numerical results. Temperature dependent material properties, effect of latent heat, and the convective boundary conditions are included in the model. Numerically predicted sizes of the penetration and the heat affected zone are compared with the experimentally observed values. As a result, there was a slight difference between numerical analysis values and experimentally observed values. For in the case of heat affected zone, it was not considered a precise forced convective coefficient value, and in the case of penetration, it was not, considered a arc force.

  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer characteristics in a rotating two-pass duct for smooth and ribbed surfaces. The duct has an aspect ratio of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter of 26.67 mm. 70-angled rib turbulators are attached on the leading and trailing sides of the duct in parallel and cross arrangements. The pitch-to-rib height ratio is 7.5 and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio is 0.075. The Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter is constant at 10,000 and the rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.2 Detailed local heat/mass transfer coefficients are measured using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The results show that the secondary flows generated by the $180^{\circ}-turn$, rib turbulators, and duct rotation affect the wall heat/mass transfer distribution significantly, As the duct rotates, the rotaion-induced Coriolis force deflects the main flow and results in differences on the heat/mass transfer distribution between the leading and trailing surfaces. Its effects become more dominant as the rotaion number increases. Discussions are presented describing how the rib configuration and the rotaion speed affect the flow patterns and local heat/mass transfer in the duct.

  • In this work, a mathematical heat transfer model of a walking-beam type reheating furnace that can predict the formation and growth of the scale layer, which is produced due to oxidative reaction between the furnace oxidizing atmosphere and the steel surface in the reheating furnace, has been developed. The model can also predict the heat flux distribution within the furnace and the temperature distribution in the slab and scale throughout the reheating furnace process by considering the heat exchange between the slab and its surroundings in the furnace, including radiant heat transfer among the slabs, the skids, the hot gases and the furnace wall as well as the gas convection heat transfer in the furnace. Using the model developed in this work, the effects of the scale layer on the heat transfer characteristics and temperature behavior of the slab is investigated. A comparison is also made between the predictions of the present model and the data from an in situ measurement in the furnace, and a reasonable agreement is founded.

  • This study is on wear damage of the material for a molding machine that be used at finally cutting of metal beam made in roll forming process of vehicle bump beam process line. SKD11 steel was used with the material for cutting mold jig. In the cutting mold jig, Ti diffusion heat treatment after vacuum heat treatment was carried out for upgrade of surface hardness and anti-wear. Also, the heat treatments by various methods were performed to compare the wear damage degree against above the existing heat treatment. Wear loss and friction coefficient were obtained from wear test. And, micro Vickers hardness values were compared with damaged parts or not of cutting mold jig. Micro Vickers hardness value appeared higher at the undamaged part by Ti diffusion heat treatment. The micro Vickers hardness well followed a two-parameter Weibull probability distribution.

  • The purpose of this study was to numerically analyze the heat flow characteristics of an automotive radiator. Heat flow analyses were conducted on the cooling water and outdoor air of the radiator, as well as the temperature distribution of the cooling water after heat transfer. The results of the study revealed that neither heat transfer nor radiator volume was affected by the position of the inlet of cooling water. However, temperature distribution was affected by the position of both the inlet and outlet. In case of heat transfer, three models underwent about 158 kW of heat transfer. The difference in cooling water temperature was about $10^{\circ}C$. In case of pressure drop, the core external air side was reduced to about 1,375 Pa, and the internal cooling water side about 14,570 Pa.

  • This study investigated the heat dissipation characteristics of a heat-sensitive LED. More than 80% of the power supply is converted into heat energy, which has a fatal impact on the lifetime of the LED. Therefore, the effective heat dissipation characteristics of a heatsink, such as a 30W floodlight, through forced convection were grasped and the heat transfer characteristics were tested. As a result, it was confirmed that the smaller the number of fins, the more the temperature distribution varies according to the wind velocity. In addition, the larger the number of fins, the smaller the temperature difference according to the wind velocity. Therefore, it was found through this experiment that excellent heat dissipation performance was exhibited as the heat dissipation area and wind velocity increased.

  • The annual nariation of surface heat exchange at ten selected station in the Korean coastal seas was studied using data of monthly mean surface temperature and meteorological parameters averaged for many years. Through heat exchange between the sea and the atmosphere, the surfaces in the Korean coastal seas are warmed by accepting heat from the atmosphere during march to September in the west coast sea, during Aprill to August in the south coast sea which includes the Ulleung-do coast sea and during April to September in the east coast sea. The periods which are cooled by losing heat to the atmosphere correspond to residual months excepting the above warming periods. Maximum total heat exchange during the warming period at each station shows the distribution of 320-720cal/ $\textrm{cm}^2$ day in June to July and during the cooling period shows the distribution of -260∼-940 cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$ day in November to January. The annual average total heat exchange shows warming of 100-240 Cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$ day in the west coast sea, cooling of -90∼-150 Cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$ day in the south coast sea and the Ulleung-do coast sea, and slight warming or cooling of -15∼65 Cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$ day in the east coast sea. Maxima or minima of the surface temperature in the Korean coastal seas appear in the month that the warming or cooling period is ended. The evaporation rate is highest during October to next January with the distribution of 5∼12mm/day.

  • The heat and smoke which generated by subway under fire is one of the most harmful factor in air tighten underground station. To prevent this, Trackway Exhaust System(TES) can be used. The heat released from the train running in the tunnel raises the temperature at the platform and the trackway, and thus proper ventilation system is required for comfortable underground environment. When the fire is occurred, TES is operated as smoke exhaust mode from normal ventilation mode. In the present study, the subway station which is one of the line number 9 in Seoul subway is modeled, and fired situation is simulated with several ventilation mode of ventilation system in trackway. For this simulation whole station is modeled. Non steady state 3D simulation which considered train under fire is entering to the station is performed. Temperature and smoke distribution in platform and trackway are compared. To represent heat by fire, heat flux was given to the fired carriage, also to describe smoke by fire, concentration of CO is represented. As the result of present study, temperature and smoke distribution is different as the method of ventilation in trackway and platform is changed. In over side of trackway, the fan must be operated as exhaust mode for efficient elimination of heat and smoke, and supply mode of fan operation in under side shows better distribution of heat and smoke. The ventilation system which is changed from ventilation mode to exhaust mode can be applied to control heat and smoke under fire.

  • The paper proposes alternatives for fire safety in architectural planning through heat-smoke distribution related to openings so that we decrease casualty and property loss by fire and lay a great emphasis on building high-rise apartments with consideration of fire safety in Korea. An analysis program(HFA-Heat Fluid Analysis) is built to perform simultaneously numerical analysis and experimental analysis on rooms, units and buildings. In consequence, on the first, fire prevention methods are required to be set up related to openings for design rooms since the flow of heat and smoke is influenced by the type of openings in high-rise apartments. Second, the numerical analysis showed that different planning types cause to show differences in the spreading time of heat and smoke to design the units of high-rise apartments. On the third, each unit building showed different fire behavior depending on openings by numerical analysis and small scaled experiment on heat and smoke flow.

  • In this days, heat pipe heat sink has been widely applied to power controllers for railway substations to remove heat from power semiconductors(diodes or thyristors). The heat pipe heat sink consists of a aluminum heating block for mounting the thyristor, 2~3 heat pipes and large number of aluminum fins. The present study was to get fundamental informations of the structure, design parameters and heat transfer performances of heat pipe heat sink. Series of operational test for a unit with 3 heat pipes were performed and its heat flow circuit was analysed from the experimentally obtained data on wall temperature distribution. Total resistance was ranged 0.02~$0.03^{\circ}C$/W for a power range from 40W to400W. The time to get the steady state was approximately longer than 20 minutes, and overshooting was not occurred during start up operation.
