  • Resistance spot welding process is completed in very short time and there are many factors affecting on the generation of heat. It is difficult to control these experimental factors and monitor distribution of the temperature and stresses in the experimental analysis case. and too much time and expense are required for the experimental trials to fine proper welding condition. So numerical analyses have been attempted steadily, but most numerical analyses on the resistance spot welding are mainly focused on thermal behavior. Therefore, in this paper, the numerical analysis of mechanical behavior as well as heat conduction is carried out for the spot welding process. For this numerical analysis, axial symmetric computer program for the spot welding analysis by F.E.M. has been developed considering heat conduction and thermal elastic-plastic theory. Material properties depending on temperature such as density, heat conductivity, heat expansion coefficient, specific heat, yield stress, elastic modulus, and specific resistance are considered. Using the results of temperature distribution obtained from heat conduction analysis, the thermal elastic-plastic analysis is carried out to clarify mechanical behavior of spot welded specimen. In order to evaluate the effect of residual stresses, numerical analyses are carried out under tension-shear load in two cases respectively; one with residual stress, the other without residual stresses.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive method of welding distortion and residual stress for the channel I butt SA (submerged arc) weldment using FEA. In order to do it, the heat input model for the weldment was defined as the combined heat source with the surface heat flux of gaussian distribution and volumetric heat source uniformly distributed within weld groove by comparing the shapes of molten pool and temperature distribution obtained by FEA with those of experiments. The arc efficiency of SA welding for two-dimensional FE analysis was evaluated as 0.85. The welding distortion and residual stress of the weldment obtained by FEA and heat input model proposed have a good agreement with those obtained by experiment. Based on the results, it was suggested that the proper heat input model should be required to evaluate the welding distortion for weldment.

  • Printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) is a compact heat exchanger with good heat transfer performance, high structure integrity, and reliability over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. Instead of the traditional zigzag and straight shape channel, the sinusoidal shape channel was adopted in this study to investigate the relation of thermal-hydraulic performance and waviness factors (period and amplitude). The local flow characteristics and the heat flux distribution were compared to verify the effects of period and amplitude on heat transfer performance. As the period of channel becomes shorter, the rapid change of the flow direction can produce high flow separation around the corner leading to the disturbance of the boundary layer opposite wall. The nonuniform distribution of flow velocity appeared around the corner positions can promote fluid mixing and lead to higher thermal performance. An evaluation index was used to compare the comprehensive performance of PCHE considering the Nusselt number and Fanning factor. Based on the simulation results, the optimal design parameters of PCHE channel shape were found that the channel with an equivalent bending angle of 15° offers the highest heat flux capacity.

  • The disposal area of a deep geological repository (DGR) for the disposal of spent nuclear fuels (SNFs) is estimated considering the spacing between deposition holes and between disposal tunnels, as determined by a thermal analysis using the decay heat of a reference SNF. Given the relatively large amount of decay heat of the reference SNF, the disposal area of the DGR is found to be overestimated. Therefore, we develop a computer program using MATLAB, termed ACom (Assembly Combination), to combine SNFs when stored in canisters such that the decay heat per canister is evenly distributed. The stability of ACom was checked and the overall distribution of the decay heat per canister was analyzed. Finally, ACom was applied to disposal scenarios suggested in the conceptual design of a DGR for SNFs, and it was confirmed that the decay heat per canister could be evenly distributed and that the maximum decay heat of the canister could be much lower than that of a canister estimated using a reference SNF. ACom can be used to improve the disposal efficiency by reducing the disposal area of a DGR for SNFs by ensuringg a relatively even distribution of decay heat per canister.

  • The random variable with an arbitrary value or more is called semi-continuous variable or zero-inflated one in case that its boundary value is more frequently observed than expected. This means the boundary value is likely to be practically observed more than it should be theoretically under certain probability distribution. When the distribution considered is continuous, the variable is defined as semi-continuous and when one of discrete distribution is assumed for the variable, we regard it as zero-inflated. In this study, we introduce the two-part model, which consists of one part for modelling the binary response and the other part for modelling the variable greater than the boundary value. Especially, the zero-inflated regression models are explained by using Poisson distribution and negative binomial distribution. In real data analysis, we employ the zero-inflated regression models to estimate the number of days under extreme heat-wave circumstances during the last 10 years in South Korea. Based on the estimation results, we create prediction maps for the estimated number of days under heat-wave advisory and heat-wave warning by using the universal kriging, which is one of the spatial prediction methods.

  • The friction heat generated by the CMP process hasinfluence on removal rate and WIWNU(Within Wafer Non-Uniformity). Therefore, the object of this study is to find the distribution of temperature on pad surface during CMP process. To do this, the authors analyse the kinematics of CMP equipment to verify the sources of friction heat and compare the analysis result with the experimental results. Through the analysis and experiment conducted in this paper, we can predict the distribution of polishing temperature across the pad surface. Furthermore the result could help to predict the process conditions which could enhance the polishing results, such as WIWNU and removal rate of thin film to achieve more efficient process.

  • The concept of temperature distribution in inhomogeneous semi-infinite solids is examined by making use of direct integration method. The analysis is done on the solution of the in-plane steady state heat conduction problem under certain boundary conditions. The method of direct integration has been employed, which is then reduced to Volterra integral equation of second kind, produces the explicit form analytical solution. Using resolvent- kernel algorithm, the governing equation is solved to get present solution. The temperature distribution obtained and calculated numerically and the relation with distribution of heat flux generated by internal heat source is shown graphically.

  • In the present study, various experiments were performed to investigate capacity modulation and refrigerant flow distribution of a multi-heat pump using a variable speed compressor and electronic expansion valves(EEVs) in the cooling mode. Based on the experimental results, it was possible to understand the interrelation of dual indoor units which provides some difficulties in capacity control of each indoor unit. The characteristics of capacity modulation of two indoor units were measured by controlling two EEVs with a cooling load of each indoor unit.

  • A computer program, which simulates the parall flow evaporator was developed. The program was having used to simulate the sample $650\;mm{\times}190\;mm$ frontal area, 25 mm flow depth and 3.0 mm fin pitch. It was shown that the cooling capacity of 3kW could be available from the sample. The present model, however, does not consider refrigerant mal-distribution in each pass, which is known to reduce the cooling capacity of the parallel flow heat exchanger.
