  • This study is discussed about the heat transfer coefficient and the fin efficiency of the heat exchanger having plate fins. A new definition for the fin efficiency of the heat exchanger is proposed. More than one hundred cases were tested numerically for the plate fins having uniform and non-uniform heat transfer coefficient. The previous models for the fin efficiency and the pure heat transfer coefficient were applicable to the heat exchanger only when the NTU is very small. It was found that the fin efficiency of the heat exchanger was nearly the same as the normalized fin temperature. The present model could estimate the pure heat transfer coefficient within a few percent in the present test range of 0<NTU<2.5.

  • Efficiency of geothermal heat exchanger operation has close relation with temperature variation of the aquifer where the exchanger is installed. In the case of long-term operation, temperature distribution of the aquifer would be similar to that of water circulating in the exchanger, which causes the decrease of heat exchange rate. Therefore, the operation period of the heat exchanger should be controlled so that the temperature distribution of the aquifer is recovered. We developed a model to determine the operation period to acquire the optimal efficiency under the given aquifer condition. With this suggested method, when we use closed-loop heat exchanger, the operation efficiency of the geothermal heat exchanger is expected to be maximized by determining the optimal operation period.

  • This paper describes an analysis on performance of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system with internal heat exchanger to optimize the design for the operating parameters of the system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling and superheating degree, internal heat exchanger and compression efficiency, evaporating and condensing temperature in the R744 low- and R404A high-temperature cycle and temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger. The main results are summarized as follows : COP of cascade refrigeration system increases with the increasing of compression efficiency, but decreases with the increasing temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger. Also, the COP increases with the increasing of internal heat exchanger efficiency in high-temperature cycle, but decreases with that in low-temperature cycle. Therefore, internal heat exchanger efficiency, compressor efficiency and temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger on R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system have an effect on the COP of this system.

  • In this study, the investigations on the dimpled type Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler have been focused on the high heat exchanger efficiency. To overcome low heat exchanger efficiency of general EGR cooler, the dimpled type EGR cooler was developed. It was ensured the improvement of the performance of the dimpled type EGR cooler related to the heat exchange based on a series of the experiment. These results were caused by the increase of thermal surface area in accordance with the dimple's one. The estimation model of the heat exchanger efficiency using the Effectiveness-NTU method was also developed in order to verify the validity of experimental result. Also, the program for the estimation of the heat exchanger efficiency on the EGR cooler with regard to the dimpled tube shape was developed. Resultantly, it was confirmed that the dimpled type EGR cooler could be served better performance than the conventional one in view of the heat exchanger efficiency.

  • Heat generation rate in a telecommunication cabinet increases due to the continued usage of mobile devices. Insufficient removal of heat intensifies the cabinet temperature, resulting in the malfunction of electronic devices. In this study, we assessed both aluminum and plastic heat exchangers used for cooling of the telecommunication cabinet, and compared the results against theoretical predictions. The aluminum heat exchanger was composed of counter flow parallel channels of 4.5 mm pitch, and the plastic heat exchangers were composed of cross flow triangular channels of 2.0 mm pitch. Samples were made by installing two plastic heat exchangers in both series and parallel. Results showed that the heat transfer rate was highest for the series cross flow heat exchanger, and was least for the aluminum heat exchanger. The temperature efficiency of the series cross flow heat exchanger was 59% greater than that of the aluminum heat exchanger, and was 4.3% greater than that of the parallel cross flow heat exchanger. In contrast, the pressure drop of the parallel cross flow heat exchanger was significantly lower than other samples. The heat exchange efficiency was also the largest for the parallel cross flow heat exchanger. The theoretical analysis predicted the temperature efficiency to be within 3.3%, and the pressure drop within 6.1%.

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been employed for the Heat exchanger efficiency of a counter flow heat exchanger. The Heat exchanger efficiency has been assessed by considering the computed Nusselt number and flow friction characteristics in the double pipes heat exchanger equipped with two types twisted-tapes: (1) single clockwise direction and (2) alternate clockwise and counterclockwise direction. Cold and hot water are used as working fluids in shell and tube side, respectively. Hot and cold water inlet mass flow rates ranging are between 0.04 and 0.25 kg/s, and 0.166 kg/s, respectively. The inlet hot and cold water temperatures are 54 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results obtained from the tube with twisted-tapes insert are compared with plain tube. Nusselt number and friction factor obtained by CFD simulations were compared with correlations available in the literature. The numerical results were found in good agreement with the results reported in literature.

  • The effect of various conditions of frosting and defrosting on the defrosting behavior of a fin-tube heat exchanger has been examined experimentally. An electric heater is used for defrosting in a fin-tube heat exchanger. There are several local maxima in the water draining rate. The amount of residual water on the heat exchanger after completion of defrosting is kept constant due to surface tension on the heat exchanger. Without considering degradation of the thermal performance due to the frosting, the defrosting efficiency is improved with increasing amount of frost irrespective of the frosting condition. The defrosting behavior is affected by frosting density as well as frost accumulation, both of which vary with the experimental operating conditions. The heat loss to the surrounding air decreases, and melting and defrosting efficiencies show high values with decreasing heat input.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the heat transfer efficiency of using copper pipe, stainless pipe and traditional PE pipe commonly used for geothermal heat exchanger, with aims at seeking improved methods. In addition, the varying efficiency of heat transfer from ground heat and groundwater heat was assessed and its applicability was discussed. Design parameters for empirical field study were derived by controlling flow rate, velocity and caliber of pipes of the heat exchanger after the thermal efficiency of the heat exchanger material was evaluated. The heat exchange efficiency and effective thermal conductivity were measured with changing pattern through field thermal efficiency and thermal response test. Experimental results show that the metal material showed higher heat transfer efficiency than the PE pipe. Although the heat transfer efficiency was not high with the increase of the pipe diameter in the flow rate, it was high with the increase of the pipe diameter in the velocity.

  • The heat transfer performance of a multi-heat-source fluidized bed heat exchanger was analyzed. The fluidized bed heat exchanger examined in this study can simultaneously recover the waste heat from gas, water vapor, and hot water. The effects of waste water flow rate, gas flow rate, and cooling water flow rate were examined to find their experimental correlations with the heat transfer coefficient. A computer program using the correlations was developed in this study to predict the thermal performance of the fluidized bed heat exchanger. The calculated heat transfer rates of gas, water vapor, waste water, and cooling water were compared with the measured values. It was found that the error of the calculated values was less than 12%.

  • A computer simulation program of a high efficiency condensing heat exchanger is developed. The flue gas flows outside bare tube bundles both in strong cross flow and in weak counter flow and the cooling water inside the tubes. Condensing heat exchangers achieve high efficiency by reducing flue-gas temperatures to a level at which most of the water vapor in the flue gas is condensed and the latent heat associated with phase change of the water is recovered. The computer model has been verified by comparison with measured data. To verify the model, heat transfer coefficient was adjusted, along with the mass transfer diffusion coefficient and pressure drop coefficient, to achieve agreement between predicted and measured data. The efficiencies of heat exchanger increase 2.3 ~ 8.1% by condensations of 6.3 ~ 62.6% of the water vapor in the flue gas.
