  • In this study, the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics were evaluated for multi-tube $CO_2$ water heaters with lengths of 4.5 m and 7.5 m. The evaluation was done using the -NTU method, and the results were compared with experimental data. Water flows through the shell side of the water heater, while $CO_2$ flows through 8 inner tubes. The heater uses a counter-current design to maximize the heat transfer efficiency. The energy balance equation describing the flows of $CO_2$ and water for each node is set up using the section-by-section method. The calculated heat transfer rates agree well with the experimental data within ${\pm}5%$ error. The outlet water temperature decreased linearly with the increase of the water flow rate. The calculated heat transfer rates agreed well with the experimental data within ${\pm}3%$ error. The results show that the heat transfer rate increases almost linearly with the increase of water flow rate or $CO_2$ inlet temperature in both the 4.5-m and 7.5-m water heaters, whereas the water outlet temperature linearly decreases with the increase of the water flow rate. The comparison of the $CO_2$ pressure drop between the calculation and experiment results shows good agreement at the high $CO_2$ flow rate within 5 % error, but the value is about 20 % higher in the experimental pressure drop at the low $CO_2$ flow rate.

  • Infrared heating has been traditionally used in industrial applications for processes such as dehydration of food industrial. This heating method involves the application of radiation in the wavelength range of 5~50 micrometers. In this work, simultaneous heat balance equations were developed to simulate the infrared radiation heating of red peppers. The equations assume that moisture diffuses to the outer boundaries of the material in liquid form and evaporation occurs at the surface of the red peppers. Energy for moisture evaporation is supplied by the infrared radiant energy. The equations were validated with experimental data on surface temperature and average moisture content of red peppers. Average deviations of predicted surface red peppers temperature and average red peppers moisture from experimental data were 323~353K and 50~80%, respectively. The spectral extinction coefficients in the wavelength range $1.5<{\lambda}<27$ micrometer at 293K for Red Peppers were determined from results of reflection measurements and the four flux radiative heat transfer calculation. The radiation extinction coefficients were obtained from effective drying factor the temperature 373K.

  • The implicit, finite element analysis program for analyzing the springback in the warm forming process of aluminum alloy sheets was developed. For the description of planar anisotropy in warm forming temperatures, Barlat's yield function is employed, and the power law type constitutive equation is used in terms of working temperatures for the depiction of work hardening in high temperatures. Also, Jetture's 4-node shell elements are introduced for reflecting the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloy sheet and the non-steady heat balance equations are solved for considering heat gain and loss during the forming process. For the springback evaluation, Newton-Raphson iteration method is introduced for overcoming the geometric nonlinearlity problem. In order to verify the validity of the FEM program developed, the stretching bending and springback processes are simulated. Though springback analysis results are slightly bigger than experimental ones, they have the same trend of the decreasing springback as the forming temperature increases.

  • The paper discusses the modelling of the thermal storage roof with the air circulation system. In this system, the fully glazed absorber plate is put on the top of the conventional pitch roof made of massive concrete and acts as a solar air heater. Solar radiation collected into absorber is stored in the roof structure by radiation and convection so that it reduces the nighttime heating load through the roof. Another part of the energy is also transmitted to internal air drawn into the channel and is then introduced Into the room. To analysis the system, the energy balance equations are developed and are solved using a finite difference method. The calculation results show a good agreement with the measured ones obtained from our experiments. From the results, it is seen that the thermal storage roof with the air circulation system reduces significantly the conductive heat loss compared with that for the conventional roof and has the instantaneous solar collection efficiency of about 30%.

  • Experiments on evaporative spray cooling on the square plate heaters with plain or micro-porous coated surfaces were performed in this study. Micro-porous coated surfaces were made by using DOM [Diamond particle, Omegabond 101, Methyl-Ethyl-Keton] method. In case of purely air-jet cooling, the micro-porous coating doesn't affect the cooling capacity. In spray cooling three different flow patterns (complete wetting, evaporative wetting, dryout) are observed on both plain and micro-porous coated surfaces. The effects of various operating conditions, such as water flow rate, particle size, and coating thickness were investigated on the micro-porous coated surfaces. It is found that the level of surface wetting is an important factor to determine the performance of spray cooling. It depends on the balance between absorbed liquid amount by capillary force over porosity and the evaporative amount. The micro-porous coated surface has largest cooling capacity, especially in the evaporative wetting zone. It is found that the effects of liquid flow rate and coating thickness are significant in evaporative wetting zone, but are not in complete wetting and dryout zones.

  • Processes controlling the interannual variation of mixed layer temperature (MLT) averaged over the NINO3 domain ($150-90^{\circ}W$, $5^{\circ}N-5^{\circ}S$) are studied using an ocean data assimilation product that covers the period of 1993 to 2003. Advective tendencies are estimated here as the temperature fluxes through the domain's boundaries, with the boundary temperature referenced to the domain-averaged temperature to remove the dependence on temperature scale. The overall balance is such that surface heat flux opposes the MLT change but horizontal advection and subsurface processes assist the change. The zonal advective tendency is caused primarily by large-scale advection of warm-pool water through the western boundary of the domain. The meridional advective tendency is contributed mostly by Ekman current advecting large-scale temperature anomalies though the southern boundary of the domain. Unlike many previous studies, we explicitly evaluate the subsurface processes that consist of vertical mixing and entrainment. In particular, a rigorous method to estimate entrainment allows an exact budget closure. The vertical mixing across the mixed layer (ML) base has a contribution in phase with the MLT change. The entrainment tendency due to temporal change in ML depth is negligible comparing to other subsurface processes. The entrainment tendency by vertical advection across the ML base is dominated by large-scale changes in wind-driven upwelling and temperature of upwelling water. Tropical instability waves (TIWs) result in smaller-scale vertical advection that warms the domain during La Ni? cooling events. When the advective tendencies are evaluated by spatially averaging the conventional local advective tendencies of temperature, the apparent effects of currents with spatial scales smaller than the domain (such as TIWs) become very important as they redistribute heat within the NINO3 domain. However, such internal redistribution of heat does not represent external processes that control the domain-averaged MLT.

  • This paper presents the optimal design of a heating system using radiant heating elements for application in smart farms. Smart farming, an advanced agricultural technology, is based on artificial intelligence and the internet of things and promotes crop production. Temperature and humidity regulation is critical in smart farms, and thus, a heating system is essential. Radiant heating elements are devices that generate heat using electrical energy. Among other applications, radiant heating elements are used for environmental control and heating in smart farm greenhouses. The performance of these elements is directly related to their electrical energy consumption. Therefore, achieving a balance between efficient electrical energy consumption and maximum heating performance in smart farms is crucial for the optimal design of radiant heating elements. In this study, the size, electrical energy supply, heat generation efficiency, and heating performance of radiant heating elements used in these heating systems were investigated. The effects of the size and electrical energy supply of radiant heating elements on the heating performance were experimentally analyzed. As the radiant heating element size increased, the heat generation efficiency improved, but the electrical energy consumption also increased. In addition, increasing the electrical energy supply improved both the heat generation efficiency and heating performance of the radiant heating elements. Based on these results, a method for determining the optimal size and electrical energy supply of radiant heating elements was proposed, and it reduced the electrical energy consumption while maintaining an appropriate heating performance in smart farms. These research findings are expected to contribute to energy conservation and performance improvement in smart farming.

  • The necessity of clear understanding of water and energy cycles has been attracted recently due to the climate change. The micrometeorological flux tower networks play a role of cornerstone of the hydrological and ecological analyses. Although the eddy covariance techniques used for flux tower have been proven to be applicable for estimation of latent heat flux, the raw data are often underestimated and needs to be corrected. Among several methods, the Bowen ratio is recognized as the most useful method in which the net radiation and other flux data (Ground heat flux, Sensible heat flux) are used and needed to be validated. In this study, in order to validate the net radiation from flux tower in Seolmacheon and Cheongmicheon watersheds, we compare it with two version of calculated net radiation: (1) FAO 56 Daily net radiation proposed by Allen et al. (1998). (2) Instantaneous net radiation proposed by Bastiaanssen (1995). The results showed that the net radiation from the flux data had similar tendency with those calculated based on physical theory. In addition, after it was applied to Bowen ratio method, the corrected latent heat flux was considerably improved with making the energy balance much more closed.

  • This paper presents the comparison results of some kinds of control method in circumstance of eccentric load. The plant to be controlled is a computed tomography(CT) driven by a permanent magnet synchronous motor. In a CT system, many units are attached on the rotationally part of a gantry such as x-ray tube, detector, heat exchanger, and data acquisition unit etc. Therefore keeping many components to balance which have different weight is not easy; this is inescapable problem in the all CT systems. To solve this problem against eccentric load, some kinds of control method have been compared and analysed by using protype CT. From the experimental results it is vilified that the CT drive system with model reference control method indicates higher speed regulation ability regardless of variable eccentric weight and uncertain position, and also in the limit condition of constant eccentric weight and fixed position, the compensation method with sinusoidal form is a strong candidate in view of speed ripple reduction.
