  • The purpose of the study is development and investigation about basic performance of the system operation on a dual fueled cogeneration system(CGS), which is operated with biogas and gas oil. As often seen in dual fueled CGS performance, the electric generating efficiency was obtained about 26□. Methane contained in the biogas could not bum completely at lower load, and it was discharged into exhaust gas. Considerable amount of the methane burned in the exhaust pipe, and the heat recovery ratio was 42□ on heat balance. As a result, the total heat efficiency, which is a summation of generating efficiency and heat recovery efficiency reached to about 70□. The supply of biogas into the engine reduces smoke density and NOx concentration in exhaust gas. At lower load, methane burned slowly and large portion of it was discharged without burning. Therefore the measures are desirable that promotes combustion of methane at lower load.

  • A thermo-viscoplastic finite element program was developed to analyze the compression molding of SMC process. Deformation of the material was modelled by using the flow-rule. Heat balance during the process was coupled to the deformation. In the cure study, a kinetic model was adopted to describe the cure behavior. The numerical kinetic model was integrated with the thermo-viscoplastic numerical analysis by adding heat generation due to the chemical reaction of the workpiece in the heat transfer analysis. The integrated finite element program can simulate a whole sequential molding process including deformation, heat transfer, and chemical reaction. A practical SMC molding process with T-shaped substructure was simulated. The simulated results showed good agreements with experiments.

  • An improved mechanistic model was developed to predict a convective boiling critical heat flux (CHF) in the vertical round tubes with uniform heat fluxes. The CHF formula for subcooled and low quality boiling was derived from the local conservation equations of mass, energy and momentum, together with appropriate constitutive relations. The model is characterized by the momentum balance equation to determine the limiting transverse interchange of mass flux crossing the interface of wall bubbly layer and core by taking account of the convective shear effect due to the frictional drag on the wall-attached bubbles. Comparison between the present model predictions and experimental CHF data from several sources shows good agreement over a wide range of How conditions. The present model shows comparable prediction accuracy with the CHF look-up table of Groeneveld et al. Also the model correctly accounts for the effects of flow variables as well as geometry parameters.

  • Longitudinal and transverse normal zone propagation in the superconducting coil are analyzed and propagation velocity is derived from the heat balance equations in the propagating boundary region. Transverse velocity is nearly $10^{-2}$ order of longitudinal velocity. Propagation velocity ie linearly proportional to the transport current. Increasing lamp current speeds up longitudinal velocity by 0.279 m/s under the applied field of 2T. Transient heat transfer has a significant effect on normal zone propagation velocity and it decreases longitudinal velocity by 4.2 m/s under the applied field of 2T as being compared to steady-state heat transfer.

  • According to the development of tool material and the improvement of machinability of cutting material like aluminium alloy, the higher spindle speed is needed. However, the higher speed causes the heat generation of bearings, the deformation of spindle unit parts, and the rotational accuracy of spindle to be worse. Therefore, it is essential to analyze and control the heat generation and the thermal behavior of spindle unit in order to have higher speed and better rotational accuracy. This paper shows the analogy between the analyzation of heat generation and thermal behavior of high speed spindle system by finite element method and the test results of actual temperature rise through running test, and shows the necessity of cooling the spindle and inner ring side of bearings for the thermal balance of high speed spindle system.

  • The present paper discusses thermal design parameters of different sizes of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers with capacities ranging from 2 MWe pilot scale boiler to a 600 MWe utility boiler. Physical boiler size and shape of furnace were identified and dimensional data have been summarized. By performing thermal design for each of the boilers, heat transfer surface area, furnace shape and size, and allocation of heat transfer surface for water-steam side heat absorption have been recalculated, and presented. Although boilers may have significantly different capacity, the facilities have common design parameters, when they are evaluated as basic thermal design processes. The significance of thermal design procedure is explicitly discussed.

  • The second kind LiBr-$H_2O$ absorption heat pump system was simulated and the performances of it were predicted. The elements of heat pump system, evaporator, absorber and generator were analysed by solving the energy balance equations and concentration equations which describe the reactions between working fluids. The results show that the temperature gain of absorber is affected considerably by the operating conditions of heat pump system, on the other hand, COP is little affected by them.

  • A numerical study for performance analysis of a counterflow type forced draft tower and natural draft cooling tower has been performed based on the method using the finite volume method with non-orthogonal body fitted and non-staggered grid system. For solving the coupling problem between water and air, air enthalpy balance, moisture fraction balance, water enthalpy balance, and water mass balance equations are solved with Navier-Stoke’s equations simultaneously. For the effect of turbulence, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model is implied in this analysis. The predicted result of the present analysis is compared with the experimental data and the commercial software result to validate the present study, The predicted results show good agreement with the experimental data and the commercial software result. To investigate the influence of the cooling tower design parameters such as approach, range and wet bulb temperature, parametric studies are also peformed.

  • This study proposes a model for road surface temperature prediction on basis of the heat-energy balance equation between atmosphere and road surface. The overall model is consisted of two types of modules: 1) Canopy 1 is used to describe heat transfer between soil surface and atmosphere; and 2) Canopy 2 can reflect the characteristics of pavement type. Input data used in the model run is obtained from the Korea Meteorological For model validation, the observed and predicted surface temperature data are compared using data collected on MoonEui Bridge along CheongWon-Sangju Expressway, and the comparison is made on winter and other seasons separately. Analysis results show that average difference between two temperatures lies within ${\pm}2^{\circ}C$ which is considered as appropriate from a micrometeorology point of view. The model proposed in this paper can be adopted as a useful tool in practical applications for winter maintenance. This study being a fundamental research is anticipated to be a starting point for further development of robust surface road temperature prediction algorithms.
