  • Absorption performance at the vertical interface between refrigerant vapor and liquid solution of $LiBr-H_{2}O$ solution was enhanced by the waves formed due to the interfacial shear stress. The present study investigated experimentally and analytically the improvements of absorption performance in a falling film by wavy film flow. The dynamic parameter was the film Reynolds numbers ranged from 50 to 150. The energy and diffusion equations were solved simultaneously to find the temperature and concentration profiles at the interface of liquid solution and refrigerant vapor. Absorption characteristics due to heat and mass transfer were analyzed for the falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by refrigerant vapor in the absorber. Absorption performance showed a peak value at the solution flow rate of $Re_{f}>100$. Absorption performance for the wavy film flow was found to be greater by approximately 10% than that for uniform film flow. Based on numerical and experimental results, the maximum absorption rate was obtained for the wavy flow caused by spring insert. The difference between the measured and the predicted results were ranged from 5.8 to 12%.

  • The present investigation deals, heat and mass transfer characteristics with the effect of slip on the hydromagnetic pulsatile flow through a parallel plate channel filled with saturated porous medium. Based on the pulsatile flow nature, exact solution of the governing equations for the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration are obtained by using two term perturbation technique subject to physically appropriate boundary conditions. The expressions of skin friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also derived. The numerical values of the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration are displayed graphically whereas those of shear stress, rate of heat transfer and rate of mass transfer at the plate are presented in tabular form for various values of pertinent flow parameters. By increasing the slip parameter at the cold wall the velocity increases whereas the effect is totally reversed in the case of shear stress at the cold wall.

  • As important factors determining human sensorial comfort, liquid moisture management and surface properties of heat resistant workwear materials were examined. To figure out liquid moisture management properties of the test materials, absorption capacity, rate of absorption, and evaporation properties were assessed. A modified GATS(Gravimetric Absorbency Testing System) was used to measure the liquid moisture accumulation associated with the wicking of liquid moisture from sweating skin. The GATS procedure measures demand wettability of materials to take up liquid in a direction perpendicular to the fabric surface and it was modified to incorporate a special test cell and cover to assess absorption behavior in the presence of evaporation. Fabric stiffness, smoothness, number and the length of surface fibers, and an estimate of the contact area between the skin and fabric surface were measured to characterize the mechanical and surface properties of the test materials. Also an estimate of the force with which a fabric clings to moist skin was made using as wet-cling index.

  • Condensation heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally when a water vapor is condensed on the outside of a horizontal copper tube in a condenser. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a LiBr-water absorption system. Hydrophilic surface modification was performed to increase the wettability on the copper tube. The optimum hydrophilic treatment condition using acethylene and nitrogen as reaction gas is also studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that the optimum reaction gas ratio of acethylene to nitrogen for hydrophilic surface modification was found to be 7 : 3 for the best condensation heat transfer. In the wide ranges of coolant inlet temperatures, and coolant mass flow rates, both the condensation heat transfer rate and the condensation heat transfer coefficient of a hydrophilic copper tube are increased substantially, compared with those of a conventional copper tube used in a condenser. It is also found that the condensation heat transfer enhancement by the hydrophilic surface modification still emains even after a hundred cycles of wet/dry processes.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate the combined heat and mass transfer enhancement using binary nanofluids as the working fluids in a $H_2O$/LiBr absorber. The result of heat and mass transfer experiment with the additives(Arabicgum, 2E1H) showed that the heat and mass transfer performance of binary nanofluid with 2E1H enhanced significantly in comparison with that without additive. In the case of 0.01wt% $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluids with 2E1H, the vapor absorption rate increased up to 77% in comparison with that without additive. The heat transfer rate of 0.01wt% $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluids with 2E1H increased up to 19%. Based on the experimental results, it is recommended that the $Al_2O_3$ binary nanofluid be good with 2E1H to improve the heat and mass transfer performance.

  • A direct contact heat exchanger using particle-suspended gas as a heat transfer medium is analyzed with an extended emphasis on the radiation, i. e., considering the radiation by both gas and particles. While the Runge-Kutta method is used for a numerical analysis of the momentum and energy equations, the finite volume method is utilized to solve the radiative transfer equation. Present study shows a notable effect by the gas radiation in addition to the particle radiation, especially when changing the chamber length as well as the gas and particle mass flow rate. When the gas and particle mass flow rate is raised, the gas temperature in the particle heater still increases as the gas absorption coefficient increases, which is different from the results for the small scale heat exchanger.

  • Modeling of vibrations of a rotating pendulum with working shape memory alloy rod has been performed in the frames of a microstructural model taking into account the latent heat release, absorption and the heat exchange during direct and reverse martensitic transformation. It has been shown that the influence of the latent heat, the rate of preliminary deviation of the pendulum from the equilibrium, the rate of heating and cooling can have a significant impact on the vibrations and damping characteristics of the system.

  • The ignition phenomena of a solid fuel plate of polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA), which is vertically positioned and exposed to a thermal radiation source, is numerically studied here. A two-dimensional transient model includes such various aspects as thermal decomposition of PMMA, gas phase radiation absorption, gas phase chemical reaction and air entrainment by natural convection. Whereas the previous studies considers the problem approximately in a one-dimensional form by neglecting the natural convection, the present model takes account of the two-dimensional effect of radiation and air entrainment. The inert heating of the solid fuel is also taken into consideration. Radiative heat transfer is incorporated by th Discrete Ordinates Method(DOM) with the absorption coefficient evaluated using gas species concentration. The thermal history of the solid fuel plate shows a good agreement compared with experimental results. Despite of induced natural convective flow that induces heat loss from the fuel surface, the locally absorbed radiant energy, which is converted to the internal energy, is found to play an important role in the onset of gas phase ignition. The ignition is considered to occur when the rate of variation of gas phase reaction rate reaches its maximum value. Once the ignition takes place, the flame propagates downward.

  • Considering the significant waste of industrial energy, effective use of low temperature waste heat is extremely important. In this study, a heat pump cycle with double effect and double stage was realized, which escalates the hot water temperature from $50^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ using $160^{\circ}C$ high temperature heat source and $17^{\circ}C$ low temperature heat source. The steam generated in the first generator condenses in the first condenser generating steam in the second generator. The steam condenses in the second condenser and is provided to the second evaporator. Part of the water out of the second evaporator is supplied to the first evaporator, which evaporates using low temperature waste heat. The evaporated steam enters the first absorber and the second evaporator. The steam out of the second evaporator is absorbed into the solution at the second absorber. The hot water temperature is raised in the second condenser and in the second absorber. Proper flow rates and UA values, which satisfied temperature lift $20^{\circ}C$ and COP 1.6, were deduced through trior and error. The COP increases as the temperature of the high temperature water increases, hot water temperature decreases and flow rate increases, waste water temperature and flow rate increases, solution circulation rate decreases. On the other hand, the temperature rise of the hot water increases as the temperature of the high temperature water increases, hot water temperature increases and flow rate decreases, waste water temperature and flow rate increases, solution circulation rate increases. In addition, the COP and hot water temperature rise increase as UAs of the heat exchangers increase.

  • The effect of tube diameter on heat and mass transfer characteristics of absorber in absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been investigated by both of numerical and experimental study to develop a high performance and compact absorber. The diameter of the heat exchanger tube inside absorber was changed from 15.88mm to 12.70mm and 9.52mm. In numerical study a model of vapor pressure drop inside tube absorber based on a commercial 20RT absorption chiller/heater was performed. The effect of tube diameter, longitudinal pitch, vapor Reynolds number, longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio on vapor pressure drop across the heat exchanger tube banks inside absorber have been investigated and found that vapor pressure drop decreases as tube diameter increases, longitudinal pitch increases, vapor Reynolds number decreases and longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio increases. In experimental study, a system includes a tube absorber, a generator, solution distribution system and cooling water system was set up. The experimental results shown that the overall heat transfer coefficient, mass transfer coefficient. Nusselt number and Sherwood number increase as solution flow rate increases. In both of study cases, the heat and mass transfer performance increases as tube diameter decreases. Among three different tube diameters the smallest tube diameter 9.52mm has highest heat and mass transfer performance.
