Objectives: The objective of this study is to identify the gender differences of risk factors for falls among the elderly in community dwellings. Methods: We analyzed the data on 3,278(male 1,255, female 2,023) persons, including 497 persons who have experienced falls, drawn from the 2004 National Elderly Survey. We conducted a cross-tabulation analysis, $X^2$-test and hierarchical regression analysis of the impact of the socio-economical characteristics, environmental characteristics, the number of chronic diseases, usage of supplementary devices, activities of daily living, dementia, and the severity of problem behavior. Results: For the entire sample of the elderly, gender, age, the size of the cities of residence, the number of chronic diseases, and the severity of problem behavior were identified as risk factors for falls. The number of chronic diseases and the severity of problem behavior were found to be significant for the male subsample, while age, the size of cities of residence, dwelling types, and the number of chronic diseases were found to be significant for the female subsample. Conclusion: The number of chronic diseases was identified as a common risk factor for falls in the male and female elderly. Chronic diseases were also found to aggravate the risk for falls when they concur with other diseases.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the influence of uncertainty-related factors on the health behavior of individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) based on Mishel's uncertainty in illness theory (UIT). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study and path analysis to investigate uncertainty and factors related to health behavior. The study participants were 228 CAD patients who visited the outpatient cardiology department between September 2020 and June 2021. We used SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 25.0 software to analyze the data. Results: The final model demonstrated a good fit with the data. Eleven of the twelve paths were significant. Uncertainty positively affected danger and negatively affected self-efficacy and opportunity. Danger had a positive effect on perceived risk. Opportunity positively affected social support, self-efficacy, perceived benefit and intention, whereas it negatively affected perceived risk. Social support, self-efficacy, perceived benefit and intention had a positive effect on health behavior. We found that perceived benefit and intention had the most significant direct effects, whereas self-efficacy indirectly affected the relationship between uncertainty and health behavior. Conclusion: The path model is suitable for predicting the health behavior of CAD patients who experience uncertainty. When patients experience uncertainty, interventions to increase their self-efficacy are required first. Additionally, we need to develop programs that quickly shift to appraisal uncertainty as an opportunity, increase perceived benefits of health behavior, and improve intentions.
Purpose: This study aimed to compare health risk behaviors among adolescents according to whether or not the parents were born in South Korea. Methods: From the database of the ninth Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS), the researchers classify adolescents into four groups: those whose parents were both native Korean, those whose mother only was a native Korean, those whose father only was a native Korean, and those whose parents were both foreign-born. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$-test and multiple logistic regression with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The adolescents with a foreign-born mother were less likely to smoke and drink alcohol than those with native Korean parents, but for other health risk behaviors the two groups were similar to each other. The adolescents with a foreign-born father were at a greater risk of drug use, intercourse, depression and violence at school than those with native Korean parents. The adolescents whose parents were born abroad were at a greater risk of smoking, drug use, intercourse, depression, suicidal ideation and violence at school than those with native Korean parents. Conclusion: Health promotion approaches differentiated by the type of multi-cultural family are needed in order to improve multi-cultural adolescents' health.
Findings from European and American studies have indicated such health behaviors as smoking, drinking, lack of exercise, and insufficient intake of grains, fruits and vegetables as risk factors for hypertension. However, because dietary pattern and health behaviors of Korean differ from people of other countries, the risk factors for Koreans could be different. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify food consumption patterns and health behavior characteristics of Korean hypertensive adults. Data on food consumptions and other health behaviors such as smoking, drinking, and exercise together with development of hypertension were collected from 597 persons aged 20 to 69 years in a local community. The first stage of analysis utilized cluster analysis to aggregate individuals into different health behavior and food consumption groups. Four health behavior groups were characterized by passive cluster, smoker cluster, fitness cluster and drinker cluster. Food consumption patterns of the subjects were also aggregated into 4 different clusters: dairy cluster, grain & vegetable cluster, fruit cluster, and fish & meat cluster. Then univariate analysis was followed to identify the variables associated with hypertension. The final stage of analysis was the identification of the relative importance of the variables selected from the univariate analysis on hypertension, using multiple logistic analysis. The results showed that heavy drinking was the most significant health behavior associated hypertension, which was similar to the findings in European and American studies. However, unlike the findings from foreign studies, grain and vegetable consumption appeared to be a risk factor for hypertension. A possible reason for the contradictory results between Korean and Western studies may be the dependence of Koreans on white rice as the major staple food, and/or the frequent consumption of salted vegetables, rather than fresh vegetables as is customary in Europe and America.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors influencing oral health education of adolescents from multi-cultural families. Methods: The subjects were 711 multi-cultural adolescents from the 15th(2019) Korean youth risk behavior web-based survey. Multi-cultural adolescents were defind as the children of marriage migrant women. The collected data was analyzed using the chi-squared test and logistic regression; SPSS versin 18.0 was used. Results: Middle-school adolescents received more oral health education than their high-school counterparts. The adolescents with once-daily and twice-daily teeth brushing behaviors were 0.475 (p<0.05) and 0.784 times less those with thrice-daily behavior, respectively. Adolescents who received oral health education also experienced dental care 1.644 times more than their counterparts(p<0.05). Conclusions: The promotion of oral health among multicultural families and further education through the establishment of school oral health education programs are required.
The purpose of the study is to examine gender differences in health behaviors and the related factors for the urban elderly population. This study utilized the data from the Suwon city health survey of the elderly in 2001. The data consisted of a random sample of 979 (388 males, 591 females) elderly people aged over 65. The results of the study were as follows. First, the elderly people's health behaviors were different by gender. Concerning health risk-taking behavior, the frequencies of smoking and drinking were higher in males than in females. In terms of health promotive behavior, the regular exercise rate was higher in males than in females. Second, there were different factors that influenced health behaviors by gender. The factors that influenced the health risk-taking behaviors were health status factors for male, and socioeconomic factors for female. The factors that significantly influenced the health promotive behaviors were social supports networks for both gender. Therefore, program priorities need to be modulated in accordance with these gender differences in health behaviors. Moreover, different program strategies are needed that reflect the gender differences in health behavior determinants.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to verify relationships between light- and heavy alcohol drinking and health-risk behaviors such as smoking, inappropriate weight control, physical inactivity, and sexual activity among adolescents. Methods: The data of 68,043 adolescents in middle- and high school collected from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey in 2015 were analyzed. For statistical analysis, logistic regression model was used. Results: The rate of heavy alcohol drinking increased with increasing age up to 21.5% among boys and 13.9% among girls. Among boys, heavy alcohol drinkers were at a higher risk of smoking (adjusted odds ratios [OR]=3.3, 95% confidence interval [CI]=2.8-3.8), inappropriate weight control (OR=1.7; 95% CI=1.4-2.1), having sexual intercourse (OR=3.6; 95% CI=3.0-4.2) than light drinkers. Multiple health-risk behaviors of smoking, inappropriate weight control and sexual intercourse also increased in accordance with the severity of drinking alcohol beverage compared to non-drinker. Physical inactivity was decreased among heavy drinkers compared to light drinkers (OR=0.8; 95% CI=0.7-0.9 for inactivity of moderate exercise). Similar results were observed among girls. Conclusions: Alcohol drinking especially heavy alcohol drinking among adolescents is related to other risky behaviors including smoking, inappropriate weight control, and sexual activity. To prevent health problems in adolescents, it is necessary to adopt a combined approach regarding heavy drinking and health-risk behaviors.
The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of the socio-demographic characteristics, self-recognition factors, and health behavior factors of Korean adolescents on suicide dimension, and grasp the effects of suicide thinking of adolescents on attempting suicide. This study used the eighth primitive data of the "Web-based Survey on Adolescents Health Behavior(2012)", and targeted 72,228 actual test respondent(93.8%). In conclusion, risk factors that greatly influence the suicide dimension of adolescents can be summarized into level of happiness, level of stress, depression, experience drinking, experience smoking, experience with drugs, suicide thinking, etc. and considering these risk factors, a preparation for preventing adolescents' suicide should be established, and along with a regular education, developing and expanding a treatment program for preventing recurrence afterwards of adolescents who have experience attempting suicide are necessary.
Purpose: This paper is a report of an analysis of the concept of pro-environmental health behavior. Methods: Rodgers' method of evolutionary concept analysis was used to analyze the concept. A literature search using keywords 'pro-environmental health behavior, 'environmental health behavior', and 'eco-friendly health behavior' was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, PsychINFO, and RISS and utilizing the results published from 1983 to 2011. Database and bibliographic searches yielded 84 records. Results: Four critical attributes of pro-environmental health behavior were identified as 'prevention and protection', 'internal process', 'altruism', and 'alternative'. Antecedents to pro-environmental health behavior were climate change, environmental pollution, and health risk. The consequences of pro-environmental health behavior were individual and social behavioral changes. Conclusion: The concept of pro-environmental health behavior developed in this project may offer information to be considered as the concept is further develop and efforts are made to measure the attributes of pro-environmental health behavior.
Background: We compared the health-promoting behavior of long-term cancer survivors with those of the general population to identify necessary behavioral interventions to reduce the health risk among cancer patients. Materials and Methods: We used data from the 2007 and 2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES IV [2007~2009] and KNHANES V [2010~2012]) on smoking status, alcohol use, physical exercise, and disease screening. We compared long-term cancer survivors with members of the general population; the controls were matched by propensity score matching. A multiple logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between cancer status and health-promoting behavior. Results: Long-term cancer survivors had a lower risk of smoking than the general population controls (OR: 0.42, 95%CI: 0.25-0.71). In addition, the long-term cancer survivors had a lower risk of alcohol use than the general population controls (OR: 0.70, 95%CI: 0.50-0.98). However, in terms of physical exercise and disease screening, no statistically significant differences were detected (physical exercise OR: 1.01, 95%CI: 0.75-1.35; disease screening OR: 1.27, 95%CI: 0.93-1.74). All covariates were adjusted. Conclusions: The long-term cancer survivors had a much lower risk of smoking and alcohol use than the general population controls. However, almost no differences in physical exercise and screening for cancer recurrence or secondary disease were detected between the long-term cancer survivors and general population controls. To reduce the health risks and challenges facing long-term cancer survivors, interventions to encourage physical exercise and screening for cancer recurrence and secondary disease should be implemented.
