Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of health education on health knowledge and health promoting behaviors in elementary school students. Methods: 17 sessions of health education were provided to the fifth graders in two elementary schools in Gyunggi Province and data were collected from 268 students. The data of 250 students who had responded both pretest and posttest were analyzed using SPSS program. Results: The scores of health knowledge for mental health, social health, sex and health were lower than other domain. The scores of knowledge for drug abuse/smoking and disease prevention/management were higher than other domain. Overall health knowledge was improved significantly from 0.60 at pretest to 0.81 at posttest (t=15.98, p<.001). The score of health promoting behaviors at post test was higher than score at pre test but this change was not significant (t=-0.91, p<.365). Conclusion: Health education had significant effects on health knowledge and we need to maintain and activate health education in elementary schools. Health education did not have significant effects on health promoting behaviors, we need to do further research for understanding why and how we improve health promoting behaviors.

The purpose of this study was to test the effect of the health education on college students. The content of the health education was consisted of significance of health, smoking, alcohol use and sexuality, birth control, exercise and nutrition, chronic illness, contagious disease, stress management. Two groups non-equivalent to pre and post test quasi-experimental research design were used in this study. The total number of subjects were 174 college students who did not have a health related major. The experimental group attended this health education program for 16 weeks and the control group attended other liberal arts and science classes for 16 weeks. Data were analysed with the SPSS window program. The homogeneity between the experimental and the control group pretest data was tested by $X^2$ test and t-test. The differences in stress, self-esteem, general self-efficacy, locus of control and health promoting behaviors after the health education were tested with the repeated measure ANOVA. The results were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in general characteristics, stress, self- esteem, general self-efficacy, locus of control and health promoting behaviors between the two groups before the health education. 2. There was a significant difference in stress(p= .000) and health promoting behavior (p= .000) between the two groups after the health education. 3. There was no significant difference in self-esteem(p= .531), self-efficacy(p= .110) and locus of control between the two groups after the health education. From the results above, it can be concluded that this health education for the college students was effective to relieve stress and improve health promoting behaviors. The above results suggest that repeated studies are needed for another college students and various health education programs should be developed to promote the health of the populace considering many health related concepts.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to develop a health-promoting program centered on the university-health center and to provide a developed program for students and faculties. Methods: A survey was conducted of 719 female students and 238 faculties concerning their health-promoting programs. Based on the results of the survey, we developed programs that could be applied to students and faculties. After operating the programs, we developed further models by evaluating the effectiveness and satisfaction. Conclusions: We selected a comprehensive health-promoting program that included weight control, preventive inoculation, sex education and control of disease based on repsective needs. We also applied programs developed through collaboration with other departments from September 1998 to August, 1999. Users of the preventive inoculation-program increased by one point five during the year. Also, participants were generally satisfied with the weight control program and succeeded in reducing weight. We hope that we can set up this program and expand it by developing various other projects in Korea.
This study was done to examine the relationship among psychosocial well-being, perceived health status and health promoting lifestyle practices, and to Identify those variables affecting a health promoting lifestyle. Three hundred and forty five ruddle-aged adults completed a multiple self-reported questionnaire on psychosocial well-being, perceived health status and health promoting lifestyle profile. Data analysis were conducted by using Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and stepwise multiple regression nth SAS program. The results are as follows : 1. The average item score for psychosocial well-being was low at 55.98, the level of perceived health status was moderate at 5.76, and health promoting lifestyle practices were low at 110.09. Among the subscales of the health promoting lifestyle profile, stress management and self-actualization were scored higher than exercise and health responsibility. 2. Performance of health promoting lifestyle was positively correlated with perceived health status and negatively correlated with psychosocial well-being. Also, negative correlations were observed between perceived health status and psychosocial well-being. 3. There were statistically significant differences for health promoting lifestyle, psychosocial well-being and perceived health status according to sociodemographic variables. The performance of health promoting lifestyle was significantly different according to education, economic status and marriage satisfaction. Psychosocial well-being was also significantly different according to education, marriage satisfaction, and exercise. Perceived health status was significantly different according to education, occupation, and economic status. 4. Perceived health status, psychosocial well-being, marriage satisfaction and level of education together explained 21.62% of varience in the performance of health promoting lifestyle. These findings help to clarify relationships among psychosocial well-being, perceived health status, and health promoting lifestyle practices in middle-aged adults. Therefore, the result of study provide clues for encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles and constructing alternative strategies for promoting health practices.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of an education program promoting safety knowledge and safety practice for mothers with infants. Method: This education was provided at two public health centers in Kyunggi Province. A non-equivalent control group pretest-post test design was used, and the participants were 95 mothers in the experimental group, and 44 mothers in the control group. Data were collected using a questionnaire, and were analyzed with the SPSS program. Results: After the group education sessions on safety management at the public health centers, the mean scores for knowledge and practice of safety in the experimental group were significantly higher than that of mothers in the control group mothers. Also, after the safety education, mothers in the experimental group perceived a higher priority in safety in child care than they had before the education program. Conclusion: The education for mothers with infants regarding the child safety was effective in promoting knowledge and practice of safety for infants.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing health promoting lifestyles in undergraduate students thus providing the basic data necessary to establish a health promoting program. The subjects of this study were 392 undergraduate students, living in Seoul, Chung-Buk, and Kangwon, during the period from May 10 to July 15, 2000. The instruments for this study were the health promoting lifestyles scale developed by Bak, Insuk(l995), the hardiness scale by Suh, Yeonok(1995), the social support scale by Su, Moonja(l988), and the perceived health status scale by Lawton et al.(l982). The results of this study are as follows; 1. The average score for health promoting lifestyles was 2.47 on 4 point scale. The health promoting lifestyles categories ‘harmony relationships’(3.08) and ‘sanitary life’(2.97) revealed higher scores, whereas scores for ‘healthy diet’(2.31), ‘exercise & activity’(2.20) and ‘professional health management’(1.48) were lower. 2. The mean score for hardiness, social support and perceived health status was 4.43(on 6 point scale), 2.91(on 4 point scale) and 3.11(on 5 point scale) respectively. 3. There was a statistically significant difference in degree of health promoting lifestyle according to religion(t=2.05, p=0.04) and spending money per month(F=2.98, p=0.03). 4. Health promoting lifestyles showed significant positive correlation with hardiness, social support, and perceived health status. 5. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of health promoting lifestyle was hardiness. Social support and perceived health status have significant effects on health promoting lifestyles. These predictive variables of health promoting lifestyles explained 24% of variance. Finally, the result of this study will provide important factors for the development of a nursing intervention program for the promotion of healthy lifestyles in Korean undergraduate students.
