Exercise is an important strategy for health promotion in patients having osteoarthritis. But, lots of patients with osteoarthritis were underexercised. Exercise pattern and influencing factors of exercise barrier are not well-known. To address this issue, we studied the exercise pattern and influencing factors of exercise barrier in patients with osteoarthritis. The subjects of the study were 463 adult osteoarthritis (Mean age = 61.63 years) who had diagnosed osteoarthritis by rheumatologist. Data were gathered from May 1999 to February 2000 using a questionnaire and exercise barrier(Sallis et al, 1989), exercise pattern(Lee et al., 2000), physical status by WOMAC(Bellamy, 1989), socail support(Sallis et al., 1989), fatigue and pain using graphic rating scale, depression by CES-D(Radloff,1977). Data were analyzed with the SPSS win 6.0 using frequency, ANOVA, Stepwise multiple regression. The results of this study were as follows; 1) 56.4% of sample was 'do not exercise at all', 'longer rest than exercise', was 15.9%, 'longer exercise than rest' was 7.2%, 'exercise regularly' was 20.5%. 2) Social support (F=10.349, p=0.000) and exercise barrier(F=4.455, p=0.004) were showed significantly difference by exercise pattern. 3) Influencing factors of exercise barrier were depression and social support. Thoses explained 13.3% of exercise barrier. In conclusion, half of osteoarthritis patient did not do exercise and it was shown that depression and social support were major influencing factors to exercise barrier. The results of this study can be applied to develop the health promoting educational program for patients with osteoarthritis.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a 8-week compound exercise and a home-based walking exercise on body composition, perceived health status, and stress of nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent control group design with pre-post test was employed. Participants, having BMI below 23 and Percent Body Fat above 26%, were assigned to three groups; 21 for the compound exercise(A), 26 for the walking exercise(B), and 23 for the control group. For data analysis, ANOVA in SPSS was used. Results: Body Fat Mass(kg), Visceral Fat Area(cm2), and Percent Body Fat(%) of both group A and B were significantly decreased. Lean Body Mass(kg) and Fitness Score of both group A and B were significantly increased in comparing with the control group. Especially the score of PBF(%) in group A was significantly decreased than the group B. The perceived physical health status in both group A and B was significantly increased. Conclusion: Both 8-week compound exercise and walking exercise were effective in enhancing BFM(kg), VFA($cm^2$), PBF(%), LBM(kg), Fitness Score and perceived physical health status. Especially the Compound exercise program was much more effective in decreasing PBF(%) than the walking exercise program.
PURPOSE: This study compared the effect of training ankle joint and hip joint thera-band exercise on balance. METHODS: The participants were divided into two groups of 11 each. Group A performed hip exercise after ankle exercise, and Group B performed ankle exercise after hip exercise. Using a green thera-band, the dorsiflexion and plantarflexion and hip flexion and hip extension were exercised repeatedly for 15 seconds three times with a five-second rest between each set. After the exercise and measurement of one area were complete, the exercise and measurement of the other area were performed at one-day intervals. The balance ability was assessed using a Tetrax and Y-balance test and repeated three times; the best values were taken. RESULTS: In the stability index (ST) of the static balance, the hip joint exercise group (HTG) during the follow-up of normal eye open (NO) revealed notable improvement over the ankle joint exercise group (ATG), and in the follow-up of the normal eye closed (NC), the ATG showed significant improvement over the HTG. In the pillow with eye closed (PC) follow-up, the ATG showed significant improvements over the HTG. At the left (Lt) and Y-balance test (YBT), the ATG showed significant improvements in the follow-up over the HTG (p <.05). CONCLUSION: In static balance, the ATG showed significant improvement in the follow-up of NC and PC over the HTG. In the dynamic balance, the Lt. dynamic balance on the non-dominant side in the ATG showed significant improvement in the follow-up over the HTG.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine effect of Tai-Chi exercise program on pain, flexibility, perceived health status and instrumental activities of daily living for osteoarthritis patients. To evaluate the effects, quasi-experimental study was used for pre and post test with a nonequivalent control group. Method: Fifty-two subjects participated in the experiment(twenty-seven for experimental group and twenty-five for control group) and they were from two different senior citizen centers in J city. The experiment period was from April 2002 through August 2002. The experiment group took part in Tai-Chi exercise program for eighteen weeks(three times a week for four weeks and five times a week for fourteen week). The exercise was performed for 50 minutes at every time (15 minutes for warm-up, 30 minutes for Tai-Chi exercise, and 5 minutes for ending). In order to pursue study purpose, the SPSS/WIN 8.0 program was chosen for the statistical analysis; ANCOVA was employed in examining test hypothesis; t-test and $X^{2}-test$ were used to examine homogeneity between experimental and control group. Result: The study results were as follows: Score of pain decreased significantly after of Tai-Chi exercise program. Score of flexibility increased significantly after of Tai-Chi exercise program. Score of perceived health status increased significantly after of Tai-Chi exercise program. Score of IADL increased significantly after of Tai-Chi exercise program. Conclusion: As shown in the results, Tai-Chi exercise program can be effective nursing intervention for osteoarthritis patient to improve pain, flexibility, perceived health status and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aquatic health exercise program for the old. Methods: 20 healthy female with an average age of 71years($71{\pm}4.2$), were participated in this study. The aquatic health exercise program that include warm-up, stretching, strengthening exercise, WATSU and cool-down was performed in the pool two times a week for eight weeks(40min per one session). Body composition, strength of the both knee flexors and extensors, balance ability(sway area and path), whole body reaction time and flexibility(forward reaching test in long sitting) were measured before and after exercise. The data was analyzed with paired t-test to determine significant differences of all suggested factors between pre and post-exercise by make use of the SPSS(ver 10.0) package program. Results: The strength of the both knee flexors and extensors were increased significantly(right knee; p<0.01, left knee; p<0.05). Anteroposterior sway area (p<0.01), and sway path (p<0.001) of both leg were reduced significantly with eyes closed and opened. Whole body reaction time by optical stimulation was increased significantly (p<0.01) but whole body reaction time by auditory stimulation was no significant difference. The flexibility was increased significantly (p<0.01). Conclusion: Aquatic health exercise program can improve muscle strength, balance, whole body reaction, and flexibility.

Continuously motivating people to exercise regularly is more important than finding a way out of barriers such as lack of time, cost of equipment, lack of nearby facilities, and poor weather. Our proposed system presents practicable methods of motivation through a diverse exercise aid system. The Health Improvement and Management System (all-in-one system which saves space and maintenance costs) measures and evaluates a diverse body shape analysis and physical fitness test and directs users to automated personalized exercise prescription which is prescribed by the expert system of three types of exercise templates: aerobics, anaerobics, and leisure sports. Automated personalized exercise prescriptions are built into XML based documents because the data needs to be in the form of flexible, expansible, and convertible structures in order to process various exercise templates, BIOFIT, a digital exercise trainer, monitors and provides feedback on the physiological parameters while users are working out in the gymnasium. If these parameters do not range within the prescribed target zone, the device will alarm users to control the exercise and make the exercise trainer adjust systemically the proper exercise level. Numeric health information such as the report of the physical fitness test and the exercise prescription makes people stay interested in exercising. In addition, this service can be delivered through the Internet.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 6-wk low intensity exercise program on fatigue, perceived health state, exercise-related affect, perceived benefits, and exercise self-efficacy for female college student's. The subjects of the study consisted of thirty-four female college students. The research subjects were assigned to experimental and control group. The experimental group participated in 13-17 and 30-60 minute sesseions of exercise program over 6 weeks. Data analysis was done by t-test with SAS program. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The first hypothesis, “The fatigue of experimental group will be lower than control group”, was supported. 2) The second hypothesis, “The perceived health state of experimental group will be higher than control group”, was not supported. 3) The third hypothesis, “The exercise-related affect of experimental group will be higher than control group”, was not supported. 4) The fourth hypothesis, “The benefits of exercise of experimental group will be higher than control group”, was not supported. 5) The fifth hypothesis, “The self-efficacy for exercise of experimental group will be higher than control group”, was supported.
Objectives: This study aims to identify factors related to exercise of some female college based on Theory of planned behavior. Methods: This study surveyed 500 female students attending a university to answer to self-reported questions using a questionnaire from May 3 to May 22 2010 and used 462 copies of the responses except insincere ones for the final analysis. Results: Of the 462 subjects, 30.7%(142) did regular exercise more than 3 times a week. As a result of the univariate analysis, there were relations between drinking, need of Exercise, attention to health, health habits, perceived behavior control and intention of exercise, and regular exercise. As a result of the multiple Logistic regression, there was a statistically significant relation between regular exercise and perceived behavior control and intention and drinking. Conclusion: This study identified that there were relations between drinking, perceived behavior control and intention of female college students and their regular exercise. Therefore, to promote their regular exercise, it is suggested that educational programs which consider such factors should be developed.

Results: The results of this study are as follows: Scores for pain on post test were statistically lower than pre test(t=4.202, p=0.001), health status was statistically improved after exercise program (t=3.479, p=0.002). But body weight did not change(t=-.774, p=0.222). Conclusion: From these results, it is concluded that the BeHaS exercise program can be effective in decreasing pain and increasing health status in middle-aged women with knee osteoarthritis.
Purpose: This descriptive study was aimed to assess the perceived benefits/barriers of exercise in community-dwelling adults in K city in Korea, and to provide a basic data for developing an exercise program for them as a nursing intervention. Method: The study subjects were 520 adults who lived in the K city. The data were collected from February 2 to March 5, 2002. The perceived benefits/barriers of exercise were measured by the Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale (EBBS). The EBBS was developed by Sechrist. Walker, & Pender (1987) and revised by Jang & Shin (1999). Results: The adults reported that the exercise benefits were moderately high and the exercise barriers were moderately low. A significant relationship was found between the reported level of exercise and the perceived benefits/barriers of exercise. Age, gender, marital status, education, residence type were significantly correlated with perceived exercise benefits/barriers (p<.05). Conclusion: Community health nurses should plan exercise programs that minimize the perceived barriers to exercise and enhance the perceived benefits of exercise. In addition, those exercise programs should be implemented in the consideration of several demographic characteristics of the clinents.
