Recently the incidence of hemorrhoids has been increased. There were various factors related to hemorrhoids, the amount of fiber intake was known as one of them. And so we performed this case-control study to investigate the association of hemorrhoids and fiber intake. The data was obtained by the combination of self-administered questionnaire and personal interview. The study population was consisted of matched 156 pairs, the cases were selected from S-hospital in Seoul, the age and sex matched control from the general population. The statistical analysis was performed by matched-analysis. The results summarized as follow : 1) As socio-economic status were low, the odds ratio of hemorrhoids were high. 2) There was significant association between hemorrhoids and regularity of eating time rather than regularity of defecation. 3) The odds ratio of hemorrhoids was 3 times higher in the presence of constipation. 4) The incidence of hemorrhoids was influenced by psychological characteristics such as somatization, obsessive-compulsive, depression, and anxiety. 5) Fiber intake was significantly lower in the cases compared to the controls. When the constipation was controlled, the fiber intake was still lower in the cases. These data provide additional evidence that the fiber intake was related to hemorrhoids.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between household types and suicide ideation among elderly people in Korea. We collected information on 220 elderly individuals(aging over 60), 171 of whom were living alone and 49 of whom were living with their families. The results showed that; 1) number of children, health status, level of stress, and depressive symptoms were all related to the suicide ideation among both groups, and 2) individuals living alone had lower sense of control, were more stressed, and more likely to suffer from depression. Based on these results, various implications were discussed and practical suggestions provided.
Questionnaires and blood pressure measurements were administered to 279 medical school undergraduates in 1987 to investigate the relationship between psychosocial factors and blood pressure as well as reliability and validity of the Framingham Type A Behavior Scale(FTA). The reliability coefficients of SCL-90-R and nh measured by Spearman-Brown haves split test were $0.57{\sim}0.91$. The factors of FTA extracted by principal component analysis were hard-driving competitiveness factor and impatience factor(2-factor solution) . The total score of nh was positively correlated with relative weight and place raised but the correlations were insignificant, and had significantly positive but weak correlations with depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoid, and psychoticism subscales of SCL-90-R. In the univariate analysis of blood pressures, relative weight and family history were significant in systolic pressure in males and economic status was significant in blood pressures in both sexes. For diastolic pressure, relative weight and frequency of alcohol intake were significant in males and relative weight was in females. After controlling relative weight, the frequency of alcohol intake for diastolic pressure and economic status for systolic pressure were significant in males. The important variables selected by stepwise regression analysis were relative weight and economic status for systolic pressure of males and relative weight and the frequency of alcohol intake for diastolic pressure. At the level of alpha 0.1, depression subscale was added to the model, changing coefficient of determination 0.206 to 0.217. In females, economic status and relative weight were selected for systolic pressure and for diastolic pressure body mass index alone, but the model of blood pressure for females was considered to be unstable due to small sample size(56). FTA was unrelated to the blood pressures in both sexes.
Objective: The objective of this study is to identify the risk factors for falls among the Korean elderly population. Methods: We analyzed the data on 167 persons of 65 years of age or older who have experienced falls drawn from the Third Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We conducted a cross-tabulation analysis and logistic regression analysis of the impact of the socio-demographic characteristics, health-related behavior, mobility, and morbidity upon the frequencies of falls. Results: Among the socio-demographic characteristics, gender(p<0.001), marital status(p<0.1), and the type of medical insurance(<0.1) were found to be statistically significant, Among the constraints on mobility, the severity of walking problems, (p<0.001) and depression(p<0.05) proved to be significant, As for variables related to health-related behavior, the level of routine physical activities (p<0.001) was found significant, Finally, rheumatism(p<0.1), osteoporosis(p<0.05), diabetes(p<0.1), urinary incontinence(p<0.01) were also significant. A logistic regression analysis of the incidence of falls revealed that urinary incontinence was the most important risk factor with an odds ratio of 2.7. Conclusion: Although a variety of factors affect the frequencies of falls in the elderly population, urinary incontinence proved to be the single most important risk factor. This finding implies that education for fall prevention is crucial for those with urinary incontinence.
The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of psychodrama group counselling, and to determine its applicability as a nursing intervention for the promotion of mental health of clients in their developmental stages. Methodological triangulation was used for research design. For quantitative study, quasi experimental study design with nonequivalent control group was used to test the effects of psychodrama group counselling. For each experimental and control group convenient samples of 15 nursing students were selected, and observed from May to Nov. 2000. For experimental group, the treatment was given for 2 hours each week, totaling 20 hours. The questionnaire consisted of 24 items of physical symptoms from CMI. 40 items of Spielberger Anxiety Scale, and 21 items of Beck Depression Scale. Reflective journal was written by the experimental group. The data were analyzed using chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test. For the qualitative study, the contents of the reflective journal were analyzed into categories and classifications. The results of the study were as follows; 1. There was a significant difference on physical health status between the experimental and the control group 2. There was a significant difference between two groups on the mean scores of mental health before and after psychodrama group counselling. 3. The qualitative analysis of reflective journal resulted in 4 categories and 13 classifications, which was reflected by the experience of the psychodrama group counselling. The four categories were self introspection, psychological support, improvement of interpersonal relationship and self development. The thirteen classifications are self-discovery, discovering others, emotional catharsis, positive thinking, formation of consensus, comforting, being free, being comfortable, understanding, maturing personal relationship, acquiring self-confidence, new challenges, and planning for the future. Based on the study findings, the psychodrama group counselling had promoted not only physical but also mental health of nursing students. The characteristics identified by the study suggested the applicability of psychodrama group counselling as an effective measure of nursing intervention for clients.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-care activities on physical and mental health of primary caregivers of functionally impaired elderly. Data were collected from 185 primary caregivers who were caring for their spouses or parents with functional impairment at home in Daejon. SPSS 21.0 software was used for descriptive analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. The results showed that (1) primary caregivers reported their physical health status as poor (2) the domains of health responsibility, physical activity in their self-care activities were significant predictors of their physical health level (3) primary caregivers reported very high level of depression (4) their mental health was significantly influenced by spiritual growth among self-care activities. Based on these findings, social work intervention and policy suggestions were discussed.

This study was performed to determine the levels of quality of life(QOL) according to the grade of long-term care service in the elderly people who were judged from long-term care insurance, and to reveal its association with related variables. The interviews were made to 958 elderlies in urban and rural areas from March 1 to May 31, 2009. The mean scores of QOL among all subjects were $55.4{\pm}15.62$(Grade I; $49.7{\pm}14.17$, Grade II; $56.8{\pm}14.62$, Grade III; $59.4{\pm}16.36$), and they were lower according to the higher grade of long-term care insurance. The multiple regression analysis was used to reveal the explanatory powers of factors influencing on the level QOL. Such factors as educational level, monthly income, subjective health status, depression and MMSE-K were shown to affect their QOL in Grade I, Grade II, and Grade III with explanatory powers of 45~62%.

This study investigated the effect of Ego-resilience, Marital communication, and Mental health on Happiness among middle-aged women Methods: A descriptive correlation study design was used with a convenience sample consisting of 239 women. SPSS Win21.0 program was used for the descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, and multiple-regression analysis. The mean score for ego-resilience was 3.46±.527(range: 1-5), marital communication was 2.44±.52(range: 1-5), mental health 1.82±.66(range: 0-4) and happiness was 3.21±56(ranse: 1-5). Happiness was found to have a significant positive correlation with ego-resilience(r=.393, p<.001) and negative correlation with somatization(r=-.134 p=.039), depression(r=-.356, p<.001), anxiety(r=-.269, p<.001). The predictive factors on the Happiness were depression(β=-.437, p<.001), ego-resilience(β=.350, p<.001), Somatization(β=.239, p=.009) and subjective health status: average (β=-.150, p=.009), unhealthy(β=-.147, p=.015). The explanatory power was 30.4% (F=14.02, p <.001). Based on the findings of this study, it is important to provide services to ego-resilience and mental health among middle aged women.
The objective of this study is to explore the structural relationships between positive parenting style, self-efficacy, stress, depression, and school adjustment of adolescents. The data in this study used from the 2010 Korea Youth Health Status Survey(N=7,187). To explore these relationships between each variable showed in this study model, structural equation modelling(SEM) was carried out by using IBM SPSS AMOS Ver. 19.0. The main findings of this study are as follows; Firstly, The positive parenting style made a positive effect on self-efficacy, and reduced the stress and depression, eventually affected school adjustment positively. Secondly, the more self-efficacy, and the less stress and depression. And the more self-efficacy, and the more school adjustment. Thirdly, as considering the indirect effect of positive parenting style on school adjustment through the mediating variable as self-efficacy, positive parenting style is more important variable than any other factors. These results implies that positive and intimate parent-children relationships or parenting attitudes on adolescents are necessary highly.

The purpose of this study was to determine postoperative quality of life(QoL), thyroid specific symptoms(TSSs), self care compliance, anxiety and depression in patients with papillary thyroid cancer and to identify factors influencing their postoperative QoL. 154 patients were surveyed using structured questionnaires and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. The mean score of postoperative QoL in the subjects was 2.72 and the postoperative QoL score of social/family well being subscale showed the lowest score. Most of the subjects suffered from TSSs such as fatigue, cold intolerance, and mood swings. The most frequent activity for self care compliance was taking thyroid hormone(100%) and OPD follow up was the second activity(99.4%). Anxiety score was 45.3 indicating a medium level however 63% of the subjects were evaluated as depression status. Postoperative QoL in thyroid papillary cancer patients showed significantly negative correlations to TSSs, anxiety, and depression (r=-.573, p<.001; r=-.739, p<.001; r=-.742, p<.001). The factors influencing postoperative QoL were TSSs, anxiety, and depression, which explained about 64.9% of the variance. Thus to improve postoperative QoL in patients with papillary thyroid cancer, health care providers should relieve negative emotions related to long term cancer management, develop the support system and provide practical information to apply patients' physical, and psychological symptoms control.
