  • The objectives of this study were to measure the index of school health promoting behaviors and to identify the influencing factors in performing these behaviors. School health pro motion indexes were composed of 6 areas developed by the WHO. The data were collected by questionnaires from June to September, 1998. The subjects were 199 elementary school nurses and data were analyzed by a SAS - PC program. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The total mean of the elementary school health promotion indexes was 3.45 with school health service being the highest score at 3.68. Other scores were 3.58-personal health skills and 3.03-community relationship. 2) There were significant relationships between school health promoting behaviors and independent variables. The important variables influencing to the school physical environment were school health budgets and the career of school nurses. Also the educational background and the career of school nurses were significant variables in school health service. From these results, it is recommended that a comprehensive school health promoting program including the 6 areas of health promotion be developed. A training program for school nurses in health promotion is necessary.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of type D personality on health status and health promoting behaviors in middle-aged women. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used with 220 middle aged women. All participants completed 3 measuring tools: a 14-item Type D Personality Scale, a 12-item Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire version 2, and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile-version II. All were completed in November 2010. Results: The prevalence of type D personality was 34.5%. Type D women had significantly lower physical (p=.020) and mental health status (p<.001) compared with non-type D women. In addition Type D women reported significantly poorer performance of health responsibility (p=.015), physical activity (p=.001), nutrition (p=.027), spiritual growth (p<.001), interpersonal relations (p<.001) and stress management (p<.001) techniques in health behaviors than non-type D women. Conclusion: Type D personality is a vulnerability factor that affects health status and is associated with poor health promoting behaviors in middle aged women. Therefore, screening for Type D personality is important to detect women at risk for health status and quality of life in community settings in Korea.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to test and develop a structural model that explains health promotion behaviors of elementary school students in Korea. Method: Data were collected using questionnaires from 329 6th-grade elementary school students in a city. The data were analyzed using LISREL 8.0 program. Result: Health promoting behaviors were directly affected by some of predictive factors particularly self-efficacy, self-esteem, perceived health status, importance of health and internal locus of control. These predictive variables of health promotion behaviors explained 67% of the total variance in the model. Life satisfaction was directly affected by self-efficacy, health promotion behaviors, self-esteem, importance of health, internal locus of control and perceived health status. Powerful other locus of control was identified as an important variable that contributed indirectly to the improvement of life satisfaction through enhancing health promoting behaviors. These predictive variables of life satisfaction explained 46% of the total variance in the model. Conclusion: The derived model in this study is considered appropriate in predicting health promotion behaviors and life satisfaction in elementary school students in Korea. Also it can be used effectively as a reference model for further study, and it is suggest that this study be used to set the direction of health promoting education.

  • With the aim of diagnostic research on health education. the health promoting behaviors related to elementary school students' weight control. life satisfaction. health state. self-efficacy. parent's interest and knowledge about weight control and school health education of weight control were investigated on the basis of the PRECEDE model. The data for this study were collected from a sample at an elementary school in Chongju for 5 days in July. 2004. In analyzing the data. t-test. one-way ANOVA. chi-square test and multiple regression analysis were done by using SPSS 10.1 The results were as follows : 1. The elementary school students' level of life satisfaction was above half of the full point. The score difference of life satisfaction was statistically significant by grade and academic achievement(F=4.646. p=.010. F=16.042. p=.000). 2. The perceived level of health state was moderate for all students. Normal weight students' level was significantly higher than obese students' (t=3.667. p=.000). 3. The perceived level of health promoting behaviors related to weight control was above the moderate. The perceived level of health promoting behaviors related to weight control in the obese students was significantly higher than that in normal weight students(t=-2.225. p=.027). The students used computer for 1.48 hours and watched TV for 2.52 hours a day. 4. The score of health promoting behavior self-efficacy in this subject was 70.61. 5. The parents' level of interest in the obese students' weight control was significantly higher than that in the normal weight students(t=-4.86. p=.000). 6. Sixty-six percent of the students learned about weight control education in school. 7. The health promoting behavior self-efficacy among the educational diagnostic variables was the most influential variable in students' health promoting behaviors related to weight control. This research diagnosed the needs of weight control education in elementary school by assessing various factors related to weight control behaviors. The research findings suggest that we can enhance the prevention of childhood obesity by strengthening the related factors such as parents' knowledge and interest, health promoting behaviors and self-efficacy related to weight control in school health education.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between health concern, knowledge of cardio-cerebrovascular disease, and health-promoting behaviors among the elderly in the community. Method: The subjects of the study were 142 senior citizens aged 65 years or older in Cheongju-si, Chungcheong-do. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that included questions on the general characteristics, health concerns, knowledge of cardio-cerebrovascular disease, and health-promoting behaviors. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical program SPSS 20.0. The frequencies, percentages, averages, and standard deviations of the collected data were analyzed using a t-test, ANOVA, Mann Whitney U test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient, basing on the purpose of the study. The Scheffe test was carried out as a posteriori test. Result: The elderly were found to have a high health concern, but their knowledge of cardio-cerebrovascular disease was low, and their health-promoting behaviors were above the intermediate level. There was a significant positive correlation between each variable, which means that the higher the health concern was, the more knowledge an individual had of cardio-cerebrovascular disease, and the more health-promoting behaviors one had. Conclusion: This suggests that the elderly in the community should be encouraged to engage in the actions that promote their health by raising their level of health concern and awareness of diseases through health education, basing on their individual characteristics.
