Global Prostate Cancer Incidence and Mortality Rates According to the Human Development Index

  • Background: Prostate cancer (PC) is one of the leading causes of death, especially in developed countries. The human development index (HDI) and its dimensions seem correlated with incidence and mortality rates of PC. This study aimed to assess the association of the specific components of HDI (life expectancy at birth, education, gross national income per 1000 capita, health, and living standards) with burden indicators of PC worldwide. Materials and Methods: Information of the incidence and mortality rates of PC was obtained from the GLOBOCAN cancer project in year 2012 and data about the HDI 2013 were obtained from the World Bank database. The correlation between incidence, mortality rates, and the HDI parameters were assessed using STATA software. Results: A significant inequality of PC incidence rates was observed according to concentration indexes=0.25 with 95% CI (0.22, 0.34) and a negative mortality concentration index of -0.04 with 95% CI (-0.09, 0.01) was observed. Conclusions: A positive significant correlation was detected between the incidence rates of PC and the HDI and its dimensions including life expectancy at birth, education, income, urbanization level and obesity. However, there was a negative significant correlation between the standardized mortality rates and the life expectancy, income and HDI.

Safety and Health Perceptions in Work-related Transport Activities in Ghanaian Industries

  • Background: With the recent rapid industrialization, occupational safety and health (OSH) has become an important issue in all industrial and human activities. However, incidents of injuries and fatality rates in the Ghanaian industry sector continue to increase. Despite this increase, there is no evidence regarding the element of OSH management in transport activities in Ghanaian industries. Thus, this study aims to examine the perceptions regarding the importance of safety and health in work-related transport activities in Ghanaian industries. Methods: A survey data collection technique was used to gather information on best safety practices over a 5-month period. We randomly selected 298 respondents from industries to answer structured questionnaires. The respondents included drivers, transport managers, and safety engineers. Standard multiple regression model and Pearson product-movement correlation were used to performed the analysis. Results: The result shows that for interventions to improve safety and health, concentration has been on drivers' safety practice with less attention to safe driving environments and vehicle usage. Additionally, the respondents are aware of the importance of OSH in transport activities, but the level of integration does not measure up to the standard to reduce operational accidents and injuries. Finally, strong commitment to changing unsafe practices at all levels of operations appears to be the effective way to improve safety situations. Conclusion: OSH culture is not fully complied in industries transport activities. This study, therefore, supports the use of safety seminars and training sessions for industry workers responsible for transport operations for better integration of safety standards.

  • 현재 국내에서는 TMA(Tissue Mineral Analysis) 결과를 독자적이며 전문적으로 해석할 수 있는 의료 정보 데이터베이스가 없을 뿐 아니라, TMA 관련 데이터베이스가 있다 하더라도 의료기관에서 사용하기 어려운 매우 낮은 수준이므로 양질의 의료서비스를 제공하기 어려운 실정이다. 또한 국내에서 주로 사용되는 TMA 방법은 미국에 의뢰한 후 보내온 분석결과에 의존하게 되는데, 이때의 결과는 서구식 생활패턴에서 비롯된 데이터베이스에 의해 분석된 것이므로 동양인의 경우 특히 검사결과의 신뢰성 문제가 발생하게 된다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 국내 임상자료를 바탕으로 TMA 관련 국내 최초 지능적 의료정보시스템(ITS: Intelligent TMA Information System)을 개발하였다. ITS는 TMA 자료를 다단계 통계분석 방법에 의한 결성트리 분류기를 이용하여 분류하고 다중 퍼지 규칙베이스를 구축하여 복잡한 자료론 추론하도록 구축하였다.

환자안전보고학습시스템 자료를 활용한 의료정보기술 및 전자의무기록시스템 관련 환자안전사건 분석 (Analyzing Health Information Technology and Electronic Medical Record System-Related Patient Safety Incidents Using Data from the Korea Patient Safety Reporting and Learning System)

  • Purpose: At present, there are a variety of serious patient safety incidents related to problems in health information technology (HIT), specifically involving electronic medical records (EMRs). This emphasizes the need for an enhanced electronic medical record system (EMRS). As such, this study analyzed both the nature of and potential to prevent incidents associated with HIT/EMRS based on data from the Korea Patient Safety Reporting and Learning System (KOPS). Methods: This study analyzed patient safety incidents submitted to KOPS between August 2016 and December 2019. HIT keywords were used to extract HIT/EMRS incidents. Each case was reviewed to confirm whether the contributing factors were related to HIT/EMRS (HIT/EMRS-related incidents) and if the incident could have been prevented (HIT/EMRS-preventable incidents). The selected reports were summarized for general clarity (e.g., incident type, and degree of harm). Results: Of the 25,515 obtained reports, 2,664 incidents (10.4%) were HIT-related, while 2,525 (9.9%) were EMRS-related. HIT/EMRS-related incidents were the third largest type of incident followed by 'fall' and 'medication incidents.' More than 80% of HIT/EMRS-related incidents were medication-related, accounting for approximately one-third of the total number of medication incidents. Approximately 10% of HIT/EMRS-related incidents resulted in patient harm, with more than 94% of these deemed as preventable; further, sentinel events were wholly preventable. Conclusion: This study provides basic data for improving EMR use/safety standards based on real-world patient safety incidents. Such improvements entail the establishment of long-term plans, research, and incident analysis, thus ensuring a safe healthcare environment for patients and healthcare providers.

환자 임상정보 활용을 위한 HL7기반 응급의료시스템의 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of Emergency Medical System based on the Standard of HL7 Message for Utilization of Patient Medical Information)

  • 기존의 응급의료시스템은 환자에 대한 정확한 임상정보의 획득이 불가능하여 전문 응급 처치의 대부분이 병원 내에서 행해지고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 후송과정에서의 정확한 응급처치를 위해 의료 정보 표준안인 HL7을 기반으로 응급의료 환경에 적합한 의료정보 전달구조를 설계하였다. 설계한 시스템은 표준화된 HL7 메시지를 통해 병원의 의료정보시스템과 영상정보 및 응급의료정보를 공유할 수 있다. 따라서 병원 이송 단계에서 생체 데이터와 과거 환자의 임상정보를 바탕으로 정확한 응급 처치가 가능하다. 또한 본 논문의 시스템은 다른 의료관련 서비스(원격진료, 공동진료, 화상의료회의 등)와의 효율적인 연동을 위해 모든 가능 모듈을 서비스 플랫폼 OSGi를 기반으로 구현하였다.

  • 최근 전 세계적으로 인류의 건강을 위협하는 요소로 대기오염이 대두되고 있는 가운데 세계보건기구(WHO : World Health Organization)의 발표에 의하면 대기오염으로 인해 사람의 건강을 해친다고 발표했으며, 서울시의 '2011~2014년 7월 다중이용시설 실내 공기 질 측정 결과'에 의하면 대부분의 다중이용시설에서 실내공기오염도 기준을 위반한 것으로 조사되었다. 이러한 실내에서 발생하는 대기오염은 폐 질환, 천식, 기관지염 등의 질병을 유발하며 본 논문에서는 이와 관련하여 환경센서를 이용하여 실내공기질을 측정하고, 측정된 데이터를 분석하여 환기 개선에 필요한 액츄에이터 신호를 생성하고 실시간으로 실내 공기 질 측정 모니터링 시스템을 구현하여, 우리 생활에서 대기오염을 자율적으로 관리할 수 있도록 한다.

  • 현대 병원들은 보다 나은 의료서비스를 위해 디지털 시스템을 갖추고자 노력하고 있다. 하지만, 아직도 많은 부분은 아날로그 시스템과 Film 출력에 의존하고 있다. 본 연구는 차량 이동형 흉부 전용 간접 촬영기에 디지털 영상 변환 장치와 이에 연동되는 X-ray 발생장치의 제어 시스템, 출력 시스템을 디지털시스템으로 변환, 연동시켰으며, 획득한 영상을 간접 촬영 전용프로그램에서 편리하게 판독 할 수 있도록 설계하여 임상에 적용시켰다. 이러한 과정에서 발생되는 문제점을 현실적으로 해결하였으며, 방사선사 입장에서 업무의 효율성을 높이고자 몇 가지 프로그램을 개발 적용하였다. 향후 미래지향적인 디지털의료 영상 시스템을 갖추기 위해 각종 프로그램과 시스템과도 연동이 되도록 설계하여 임상에 적용하여 우수성을 입증하였다.

Dining-out behaviors of residents in Chuncheon city, Korea, in comparison to the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey 2001

  • Dining-out behavior is associated not only with socio-demographic characteristics such as gender, education, occupation, residence, and marital status, but also with individual preferences, such as eating-out activities, interests, and opinions. We investigated dining-out behaviors and their associated factors. Announcements by health practioners and the Chief of Dong Office were used to recruit 739 residents (217 males and 522 females) in Chuncheon, Korea. Information on the frequency and reasons for eating out, the standards for meal selection, and the overall satisfaction with restaurants, based on taste, nutrition, amount, price, service, sanitation, and subsidiary facilities of restaurants, was obtained through personal interviews with a structured questionnaire. Among all respondents, 46.3% of subjects ate outside of the home once or twice a month, and 33.8% reported that they ate out only a few times a year, or never. This was much higher than the national average of 52.0% as reported by the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHNS) in 2001. The frequency of eating out differed significantly according to age (p=0.001), family income (p<0.001), residential area (p<0.001), and educational level (p<0.001). The most common reasons for dining out were meetings (46.7%), followed by special celebrations (15.4%), and enjoyment (11.2%). Korean food (55.3%) was the most frequently selected type of meal when eating out, and food was most often selected based on personal preferences (41.4%) and taste (29.8%); only 5.5% and 7.7% of subjects considered nutrition or other factors (e.g., sanitation), respectively. The results showed that the frequency of eating out for Chuncheon residents was much lower than the national average; in addition, eating-out behaviors depended on the residents' socio-demographic and personal characteristics.

화장용 문신으로 사용되는 염료 및 색소의 중금속 분석 (Analysis of Heavy Metals in Dyes and Pigments Used in Make up Tattoo)

  • 본 연구는 화장용 문신으로 사용되는 염료 및 색소의 대표적인 중금속과 기타 금속류 분석을 통하여 염료 및 색소에 관한 정확한 정보 제공 및 생산에 대한 적절한 지침과 통제의 기준을 확립하는데 자료를 제공하고자 시도되었다. 화장용 문신 제품 30개를 대상으로 화장용 문신 염료 기준에 해당하는 대표적인 중금속인 비소, 안티몬, 코발트, 카드뮴, 구리, 납, 아연, 바륨, 주석, 셀레늄, 크롬과 마그네슘, 망간, 티타늄, 알루미늄에 대한 성분 함유량 검출(15종)을 분석하였다. 화장용 문신 제품에 사용되는 염료 및 색소의 중금속류 성분의 함유량을 검사한 결과, 총20개 제품(66.7%)에서 기준치를 초과하는 중금속이 검출되어 안전기준에 부적합한 것으로 나타났다. 안전한 시술을 위한 전문기관의 지침과 사용되어지는 염료 및 색소에 대한 적절한 통제관리 및 표준지침, 중금속의 잠재적인 위험성에 대한 연구가 필요하다고 제시된다.

Basic Physiological Research on the Wing Flapping of the Sweet Potato Hawkmoth Using Multimedia

  • We have developed a device for recording biological data by inserting three electrodes and a needle with an angular velocity sensor into the moth for the purpose of measuring the electromyogram of the flapping and the corresponding lift force. With this measurement, it is possible to evaluate the moth-physiological function of moths, and the amount of pesticides that insects are exposed to (currently LD50-based standards), especially the amount of chronic low-concentration exposure, can be reduced the dose. We measured and recorded 2-channel electromyography (EMG) and angular velocity corresponding to pitch angle (pitch-like angle) associated with wing flapping for 100 sweet potato hawkmoths (50 females and 50 males) with the animals suspended and constrained in air. Overall, the angular velocity and amplitude of EMG signals demonstrated high correlation, with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.792. In contrast, the results of analysis performed on the peak-to-peak (PP) EMG intervals, which correspond to the RR intervals of ECG signals, indicated a correlation between ΔF fluctuation and angular velocity of R = 0.379. Thus, the accuracy of the regression curve was relatively poor. Using a DC amplification circuit without capacitive coupling as the EMG amplification circuit, we confirmed that the baseline changes at the gear change point of wing flapping. The following formula gives the lift provided by the wing: angular velocity × thoracic weight - air resistance - (eddy resistance due to turbulence). In future studies, we plan to attach a micro radio transmitter to the moths to gather data on potential energy, kinetic energy, and displacement during free flight for analysis. Such physiological functional evaluations of moths may alleviate damage to insect health due to repeated exposure to multiple agrochemicals and may lead to significant changes in the toxicity standards, which are currently based on LD50 values.
