Background: Breast cancer incidence is increasing among South Asian migrants to the United States (US). However, their utilization of cancer screening services is poor. This study characterizes attitudes of South Asians towards breast health and screening in a community sample. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) was conducted among South Asians (n=124) in New Jersey and Chicago. The following beliefs and attitudes towards breast cancer screening were assessed-health motivation, breast self-examination confidence, breast cancer susceptibility and fear, and mammogram benefits and barriers. Descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation coefficients were computed for HBM subscales. Findings: Mean age of participants was 36 years with an average 10 years stay in the US. Most women strived to care for their health ($3.82{\pm}1.18$) and perceived high benefits of screening mammography ($3.94{\pm}0.95$). However, they perceived lower susceptibility to breast cancer in the future ($2.30{\pm}0.94$). Conclusions: Increasing awareness of breast cancer risk for South Asian women may have a beneficial effect on cancer incidence because of their positive attitudes towards health and breast cancer screening. This is especially relevant because South Asians now constitute one of the largest minority populations in the US and their incidence of breast cancer is steadily increasing.
Purpose - The main objective of this study was to investigate tourists behavior by applying protection motivation theory and health belief model during COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the study examined how risk perception of COVID-19 affects tourists' protection motivation and travel avoidance intention. Design/methodology/approach - The empirical data was collected by self-administered questionnaires to obtain perception and behavior regarding COVID-19 pandemic situation. A total of 486 questionnaires were used for data analysis and SEM analysis was applied in order to examine seven hypotheses. Findings-The results showed that COVID-19 risk perception is a significant antecedent of threat appraisal, coping appraisal, and cue to action (H1, H2, H6). Moreover, protection motivation is affected by threat appraisal and coping appraisal (H3, H4) and influences on travel avoidance intention (H5). However, cue to action does not affect protection motivation (H7). Research implications or Originality - This study provides insightful implications for tourism industry practitioners who will prepare the post-corona field and the results enrich knowledge of the tourist behavior during pandemic situation.
This study was conducted to find ways to improve people's perceptions to prevent and detect breast cancer. Health belief model(HBM) was used to examine the relationship between. risk perception of breast cancer, and benefit perception, and information seeking. In addition, the role of autonomous motives was included in the model. The results shows that the more people perceived cancer as dangerous, or perceived cancer screeing as beneficial, the more likely they seek relavant health information. Also, high autonomous motives showed positive effects on info seeking. Information seeking behaviors also had a positive impact on health screening intentions.
This article reviewed & analyzed 33 studies of the Health Belief Model applied to korean chronic ill patients which were published from 1975 to 1990. The findings of analysis are as follows. The subjects of researchs are patients with various chronic illness including Pulmonary Tb., DM., Hemodialysis & Kindney Transplantation, Hypertension, etc. The type of research is retrospective survey in all studies. The measurement of health' belief in all studies & sick role behavior in most studies have relied on self report. The analysis of the relationship between health belief and sick role behavior was done using correlation coefficient in most studies. To analyze empirical support for the relatiohship between health belief and sick role behavior, Significance ratio was computed. This ratio is value wherein the number of statistically significant findings with relationship in the expected direction for an HBM dimension are divided by total number of studies which reported significance levels for that dimension. Examination of this ratio across the 33 studies reveals susceptibility(30.3%), severity(34.4%), benifit(65.6%), barrier(50%). The following suggestions are based on the above findings and literature review. 1. It is necessary to develop the reliable, valid and standadized instrument for measurement of health beliefs. 2. In the further 'measurement of perceived susceptibility of the chronic ill patients, It is considering that the perceived susceptibility and perceived severity are measured together or the measurement of perceived, susceptibility is eliminated. 3. Relationship between perceived severity and sick role behavior is suggested to be analized using ANOV A, $x^2$ square instead of correlation coefficient. 4. Sick role behaviors should be measured by both self report and objective measurement. 5. Prospective, longitudinal survey should be needed. 6. Other factors influencing sick role behaviors of chronic ill patients should be investigated further.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of health education based on the health belief model (HBM) to the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in middle school students. Methods: A pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group was designed for the purpose of this study. A total of 212 students (134 in the experimental group and 78 in the control group) of two middle schools in Seoul were enrolled for the study. Health education of two 45-minutes sessions over two weeks were provided. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, t-test, ANCOVA and repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc test, using the SPSS version 21.0. Results: There were significant differences between experimental group and control group with reference to perceived susceptibility (F=7.862, p=.006), perceived severity (F=8.291, p=.004), perceived benefits (F=20.311, p<.001), and perceived barriers (F=5.628, p=.019) after health education were provided. We also observed sustained health education effects of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers in the experimental group for up to 4 weeks after health education were provided. Conclusion: The health education to prevent NIHL based on the HBM improved the health beliefs of the middle school students. Health education on the HBM for the prevention of NIHL should be provided at the level of middle school.

The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting female college students' behaviors in seeking reproductive health information on the Internet and to explore the relationships among these factors. Based on the Health Belief Model(HBM) and the Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB), perceived sensitivity, perceived severity, perceived benefit, perceived barriers, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and affective evaluation were defined as key factors, and the study was designed accordingly. An online survey was distributed to female college students in Seoul through the university student's online community, 'Everytime.' The results showed that the intention of female college students to seek reproductive health information via the Internet was associated with higher perceived sensitivity, perceived benefit, and subjective norms, and lower perceived barriers. There were statistically significant differences between groups in terms of sexual experiences, experience with reproductive system disorders, and the level of health interest. We believe that this research outcome will contribute to assessing the level of awareness regarding reproductive health among female college students, thereby aiding in the development of online health information literacy education or related service programs by university libraries, health institutions, and similar entities targeting female college students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine factors related to different stages of mammography screening based on the transtheoretical model (TTM) and health belief model (HBM). Method: 143 women were recruited from community centers in W city. The mean age was 44.08 (SD=7.78) and 74 (51.7%) had experienced education on preventative behavior related to breast cancer. The Decisional Balance Scale (Pros and Cons of mammography) and Stages of Adoption of Mammography Scale by Rakowski et al. (1992) and the revised Health Belief Model Scale (Perceived Seriousness, Perceived Susceptibility and Health Motivation) by Champion (1993) were used. Result: According to the stage of adoption of mammography, 17.4% of the women were In pre-contemplation, 45.5% in contemplation, 24.5% in action, and 12.6% in maintenance. The mean differences for pros, and the decisional balances between the stages of mammography adoption were significant (F=8.84, p=.000; F=7.20, p=.000). Education related to prevention of breast cancer was the most important variable. Prevention education, history of breast disease and pros of mammography explained the stages of mammography adoption ($R^{2}=26%$). Conclusion: Findings support TTM as a useful tool for improving mammography adherence. Behavioral interventions that target decisional balance and health belief can effectively promote adherence to mammography.
Purpose: This study investigated the level of adherence to vestibular rehabilitation exercise program(VREP) and evaluated how health belief model (HBM) variables are related with adherence to VREP in patients with dizziness. Methods: The data were collected from 150 individuals, who agreed to participate in the study between December, 2012 and May, 2013. Adherence to VREP, severity of dizziness, health belief variables (health belief scale) and self-efficacy (self-efficacy scale) were measured. Results: The result of this study showed poor adherence to VREP. The mean adherence score to VREP was $2.11{\pm}1.05$ (1-5). In multivariate analysis, severity of dizziness (p<.001), taking sedative medication (p<.001), high self-efficacy (p<.001), high perceived seriousness (p=.019) & benefit (p=.036) were independent predicting factors explaining 57.7% of adherence to VREP. Conclusion: Adherence to VREP was poor among these patients. To improve the patient's adherence to VREP, strategies to increase perceived seriousness, benefit, or self-efficacy and to decrease barriers are urgently needed.
Background: The incidence of breast cancer is rapidly increasing in Yemen with recent indications of constituting one-third of female cancers. The main problem in Yemen remains very late presentation of breast cancer, most of which should have been easily recognisable. Since stage of disease at diagnosis is the most important prognostic variable, early diagnosis is an important option to be considered for control of breast cancer in low resourced settings like Yemen. In the present study, we aimed at describing breast cancer knowledge, perceptions and breast self-examination (BSE) practices among a sample of Yemeni women. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study covered 400 women attending four reproductive health centres in Aden, Yemen through face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire during April - July 2014. We collected data on sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge about breast cancer, and screening practices as well as respondents' perceptions based on the five sub scales of the Health Belief Model (HBM): perceived susceptibility; perceived severity; perceived barriers; perceived benefits; and self-efficacy. The response format was a five-point Likert scale. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 20) was used for statistical analysis. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Logistic regression analysis was conducted with BSE as a dependent variable. Results: The mean age of women was 26.5 (S.D=5.6) years. The majority (89.0%) had never ever performed any screening. Two-thirds of respondents had poor knowledge. Perceived BSE benefits and self-efficacy and lower BSE barriers perception were significant independent predictors of BSE practice. Conclusions: Poor knowledge and inadequate BSE practices are prevailing in Yemen. The need for implementing culturally sensitive targeted education measures is mandatory in the effort to improve early detection and reduce the burden of breast cancer.
Since the outbreak of Covid-19, many countries have tried to defense Covid-19 to protect their people and as an influential and reliable policy as of now, they have recommended vaccinating. Thus, this research explored what influences the intention to vaccinate against Covid-19 with three health locus of control from multi-dimension health locus of control (MHLC) and perceived susceptibility and severity from health belief model (HBM) through PLS path modeling. Consequently, chance locus of control (CHLC) influence indirectly intention to vaccinate against Covid-19 mediating with susceptibility perception. It implies that the more fatalistic people attitude toward Covid-19, the more susceptible they perceived to the disease, and then, the stronger intention to vaccinate they would have. Thus, the health promotion authorities should motivate to activate people's susceptibility perception toward the disease through utilizing a variety of policies and consider that the fatalistic tendency toward the disease of people could play an antecedent role in the process.
