This experiment was performed to evaluate the agronomic characteristics and dry matter yields of the early maturing cultivars(c.v.'Koolgrazer', '9909,' 'Ol-homil' and 'Jlee select') the medium maturing cultivar(c.v. 'Homil 22') and late maturing cultivars(c.v. 'Danko', 'Kior', 'Amilo' and 'Spooner'.) Seeds were sown on October 3, 2002 and October 8, 2003, respectively at the Livestock Experiment Farm of Keimyung College, Seongju, Kyeongbuk Province. Forage rye was harvested on April 22, 2003 and April 23, 2004, respectively. The height of early maturing cultivars were higher than that of late maturing cultivars at the harvest. Fifty percent heading date of the early maturing cultivar was on April 14 and that of late maturing cultivars were on April 24. In the first year, dry matter(DM) yield of 'Jlee select' was significantly the highest in among all cultivars(p < 0.05). DM yield of early maturing cultivars were higher than that of medium and later maturing cultivars. In the second year, DM yield of '9909' was significantly the highest in among all cultivars(p < 0.05). The early maturing cultivar of 'Koolgrazer' and 'Ol-homil' were similar and 'Jlee select' was low, late maturing cultivar of 'Danko', 'Kior', 'Amilo' and 'Spooner' were lower than early maturing cultivar. According to the results obtained from the study, it is suggested that the early maturing cultivar would be recommendable for fall sown rye for double cropping forage production.

This study was conducted to identify the optimum proper nitrogen (N) application rate for tillering in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy of rice culture. During 1998, a series of experiments was carried out at paddy field (Chonbuk series) of the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA using Dongjinbyeo. Leaf area index and top dry weight increased with higher N levels, especially in the 100 kg/ha seeding rate compared with the 60 kg/ha seeding rate. N use efficiency increased at increased by 50~75% of the N topdressing rate at tillering. Heading date, ripened grain rate, and 1,000-grain weight of brown rice did not vary among the rate of topdressing for tillering and seeding rates. The highest grain number per unit area was at the level of increased by 75% in N topdressing at tillering stage. Milled rice yield increased 5% at the 60 kg/ha seeding rate and increased 16~17% at the 100 kg/ha seeding rate at increased by 50~75% of topdressing N compared with 48 kg/ha topdressed N of 60 kg/ha seeding rate.

This experiment was carried out to find out the responses of the growth characteristics to various air temperature in a high yielding indica/japonica rice cultivar, 'Dasanbyeo'. Five different transplanting dates with 30 day-old seedlings were tried to induce various environmental conditions, starting from 10th May to 19th June in the interval of 10 days at National Crop Experiment Station, in 1998. Planting densities with different plants per hill but same hill spacing were tested. The daily mean air temperature during 30 days after transplanting was 19.0, 20,8, 21.9, 24.4 and 25.2$^{\circ}C$ when transplanted on the 10th May, the 20th May, the 30th May, the 9th June and 19th June, respectively. The number of tillers per hill at 30 days after transplanting was affected by the daily mean air temperature during 30 days after transplanting. The higher the daily mean air temperature, the more tillers per hill at 30 days after transplanting were. The growth duration from transplanting to heading was greatly changed according to the transplanting dates. It was shortened as the transplanting date was delayed until transplanted on the 9th June, but it was prolonged when transplanted on the 19th June compared to that of the 9th June. The number of panicles per hill increased with the increase of the transplanted plants per hill up to 7 plants per hill. The number of panicle per unit area was closely related to the number of tillers per unit area at maximum tillering stage. It was found that the average effective temperature during first 10 tiller formation related to the days to the tenth tiller formation with the relationship of y = 1.071x$^2$ - 37.307x + 342.38($R^2$ = 0.9823).
1. Kum Nam Poong which is highly susceptible to bacterial leaf blight was used as the host plant throughout this experiment. Xanthomonas oryzae 6526 was inoculated on the top of upper leaves by single needle inoculation method. After 14 days, the enlarged spots were examined in the experimental pots. Each of 3 levels of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium pots were arranged at random with three replications. 2. The amounts of nitrogen fertilizer applied and the lesion development of bacterial leaf blight were positively correlated regardless of application of phosphate and potassium fertilizers. 3. The effect of phosphate fertilizer on the lesion development was not significantly different from standard level. The lesion development was stimulated when the amount of phosphate fertilizer was increased as twice as standard level. 4. The inhibitory effect of potassium fertilizer on leaf blight was maximum by applying standard level. The stimulative effect of potassium fertilizer on the lesion development, however, was noticed. when potassium fertilizer applied was increased as twice as the standard level. 5. The heading date and spike number of rice plant were significantly correlated with the lesion development, and such phenomena were depended on the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied regardless of the other fertilizers applied in this experiment.
Thirteen near-isogenic lines (NILs) of japonica rice were developed via a backcross method using the recurrent parent Chucheong, which is of good eating quality but is susceptible to Magnaporthe grisea, and three blast resistant japonica donors, Seolak, Daeseong and Bongkwang. The agro-morphological traits of these NILs, such as heading date, culm length, and panicle length, were similar to those of Chucheong. In a genome-wide scan using 158 SSR markers, chromosome segments of Chucheong were identified in most polymorphic regions of the 13 NIL plants, and only a few chromosome segments were found to have been substituted by donor alleles. The genetic similarities of the 13 NILs to the recurrent parent Chucheong averaged 0.961, with a range of 0.932-0.984. Analysis of 13 major blast resistance (R) genes in these lines using specific DNA markers showed that each NIL appeared to contain some combination of the four R genes, Pib, Pii, Pik-m and Pita-2, with the first three genes being present in each line. Screening of nine M. grisea isolates revealed that one NIL M7 was resistant to all nine isolates; the remaining NILs were each resistant to between three and seven isolates, except for NIL M106, which was resistant to only two isolates. In a blast nursery experiment, all the NILs proved to be more resistant than Chucheong. These newly developed NILs have potential as commercial rice varieties because of their increased resistance to M. grisea combined with the desirable agronomic traits of Chucheong. They also provide material for studying the genetic basis of blast resistance.

This study was conducted to obtain the basic information on rice cold damage and relationship to be connected with cold tolerance. The 20 rice varieties were screened to cold tolerance under low water temperature condition. The water gradient were controlled to $17^{\circ}C$ at the inlet and $21^{\circ}C$ at outlet of screening field. In the relationship between cold water irrigation and growth of rice varieties, effect on medium maturing cultivars were higher than early maturing cultivars. In relationship of shorting of culm length and panicle exsertion, culm length and panicle exsertion showed positive correlation. Yield of cultivars and culm length and percent of fertile grain showed positive correlation. However, heading date presented negative correlation. In the early maturing cultivars, except 'Kumobyeo', all cultivars range of discoloration value (1-3) was resistant. In the medium maturing cultivars, 'Donghaebyeo' was resistant in both the seedling stage whereas 'Hwajinbyeo' was resistant only in tiller stage. Cold water irrigation reduced spikelet number per panicle and percent of filled grain. Unhulled rice yield was increased according to water temperature gradient from inlet to outlet. There was varietal differences in head rice recovery by cold water treatment.
Effects of phosphorus, potassium and calcium applications on root activity and agronomic characters of paddy rice were studied in submerged paddy soil on which starch was applied to accelerate soil reduction and production of toxic substance during 1971~1973. Root activity at heading date was decreased in reduction accelerated soil by starch application. Effect of calcium application on root activity was differed along soil conditions, phosphorus or potassium levels. Single effects of phosphorus or potassium application were not significant on every observed characters. Calcium application when phosphorus or potassium was not used as basal but used as top dressing increased yield and yield components, especially filled grain ratio. Effect of calcium application along soil conditions was differed on agronomic characters, but calcium application with phosphorus or potassium was more effective to increase yield components and grain yield. Sufficient application of phosphorus, potassium and calcium could improve the nutritional situation of rice plant for panicle development and grain maturity in reduction accelerated paddy soil in which poor growing of rice plant after panicle formation is anticipated by the production of toxic substance from soil.

This study was conducted to analysis a major cause of rice yield reduction in 4 research points, 1, 2, 3, and 5km, from coastline in the East Sea. There were great changes of temperature in each research point, though the average temperature a day was no difference between each research point. Each temperature in 1, 2, and 3km research points was 8, 7, and $4^{\circ}C$ lower than in 5km when cold salty wind was generated due to cold pool. As it was close in coastline, its soil was abundant sand components, little silt and clay soil components and lacking in cation exchange capacity(CEC). And plant height became a smaller, heading date was delayed for 3~4 days, and dry weight was reduced. Also, it was to be down percent of fertile grain. As cultivation site was close in seaside, its decline was larger because of reduction of panicle number per hill. It was "Samdeogbyeo" that was variety adapted in cold salty wind, having yield potential more than 90% in 2km.

In order to develop effective control methods for Bakanae disease caused by Gibberella fujikuroi (Saito) Ito during rearing of rice seedlings, we investigated the disease resistance of 15 rice varieties to G. fujikuroi and control effect of six seed disinfectants, and tried to improve the using methods of the seed disinfectants. Disease resistance was tested by investigating the disease incidence on each rice cultivar grown in rice seedling box infested with or not infested with G. fujikuroi at 30 days after sowing seeds and 20 days after heading date. The results showed that Hwayongbyeo, Dongjinbyeo, Hwoanbyeo, Nonghobyeo, Nampyeongbyeo, and Hwojinbyeo were resistant G. fujikuroi, meanwhile Keulubyeo, Sobibyeo, Odaebyeo, Junambyeo, Samchonebyeo, Sangjubyeo, and Hwabongbyeo were susceptible. Three seed disinfectants, prochloraz, fludioxonil, and carproamid + thiram + fludioxonil controlled Bakanae disease of rice very well, while bonomyl + thiram, thiophanate-methyl + thiram and thiophanate-methyl + triflumizole did not suppress the disease enough. Water temperature was turned to be an important factor for controlling the disease by treating seed disinfectants. Prochloraz showed 61% control value on the disease at $10^{\circ}C$, but it showed above 95% control value at the range of $30-35^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that the control effect of seed disinfectants increased with increasing water temperature. Meanwhile soaking period of rice seeds in the suspension of seed disinfectants and chemical dosage had no high relation to control the disease. This results suggest that rice varieties, water temperature, and optimal selection of suitable seed disinfectants are very important to control Bakanae disease effectively.

This study was conducted to investigate suitable seeding rate under irrigation water-saving rice culture in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy during 1997~1998. Dongjinbyeo was seeded from 60 kg/ha to 120 kg/ha on silty loam condition. The number of irrigation from 3-leaf stage to complete drainage were 7.5 times and total amount of irrigation was 258.75 mm. The number of seedling stand rose with the increase of seeding rate, whereas the rate of seedling stand was decreased with the increase of it. Soil moisture tension was -2kPa at one day after stopped irrigation and lowered to -30kPa at five days after stopped irrigation. Leaf area index and shoot dry weight were increased with rising of seeding rate. Lodging index was increased with the rising of seeding rate, but lodging was not showed in field. Heading date, percent ripened grain and 1,000 grain weight had no difference with seeding rate, and number of spikelets per m$^2$ were highest at the rate of 100 kg/ha. Rice yield was increased by 9% at the seeding rate of 100 kg/ha and 4% at the rate of 80 kg/ha and 120 kg/ha compared with 60 kg/ha. Therefore, it was considered that appropriate seeding rate was 100 kg/ha under water-saving culture in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy.
