  • In this paper, we propose a rapid asynchronous UWB (Ultra Wide Band) position location scheme based on double RTTs (Round-Trip Transmissions). In the proposed scheme, to avoid performance degradation of the position location in harsh multipath channel environments where LoS (Line-of-Sight) components are not always guaranteed, the remaining RTT information is solved from realistic double RTTs. Simulation results in IEEE 802.15.4a UWB channel models reveal that the proposed scheme can achieve closely comparable position location accuracy of the conventional ToA (Time of Arrival) method based on triple RTTs, while reducing the processing delay required for the calculation of the position locations.

  • Polycrystalline(poly) 3C-SiC film is a promising structural material for M/NEMS used in harsh environments, bio and fields. In order to realize poly 3C-SiC based M/NEMS devices, the electrical properties of poly 3C-SiC film have to be optimized. The n-type poly 3C-SiC thin film is deposited by APCVD using HMDS$(Si_2(CH_3)_6)$ as single precursor and are in-situ doped using N2. Resistivity values as low as 0.014 $\Omega$cm were achieved. The carrier concentration increased with doping from $3.0819\times10^{17}$ to $2.2994\times10^{19}cm^{-3}$ and electronicmobility increased from 2.433 to 29.299 $cm^2/V{\cdot}s$.

  • A fiberoptic sensor using an SLD as a light source has been studied. The sensor system employs an intrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer as a sensing tip and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a processing one. A free loading test for temperature application shows that the fiberoptic sensor has a wide-dynamic range as well as high resolution. Due to the inherent property of the optical fiber itself and the intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer. the fiberoptic sensor gives obvious benefits when it is applied to harsh environments to monitor some physical parameters such as temperature, strain, pressure and vibration.

  • The grate bar, a component used in steel mills, is used in harsh environments where external disturbances such as high temperature, abrasion, corrosion, and impacts are present. Therefore, in this study, spray-coating was performed on the most severely affected surface to extend the lifetime of the grate bar. The thermal and mechanical properties of the sprayed coated bars were investigated based on the performances under abrasion, thermal shock, tension, and sand blasting, and the microstructures by microscope. By analyzing the thermal and mechanical properties of the uncoated original grate bar and coated grate bar and comparing them with one another, the physical performance improvement of the coated grate bar can be verified.

  • Ghost imaging offers great potential, with respect to standard imaging, for imaging objects in optically harsh or noisy environments. It can solve the problems that are difficult to solve by conventional imaging techniques. Recently, it has become a hot topic in quantum optics. In this paper, we propose a scheme for ghost imaging based on rosette scanning, named rosette ghost imaging. Sampling a small area sampling instead of the whole object, the instantaneous field of view of rosette scanning is used as the modulation light field in ghost imaging. This scheme reduces energy loss, the number of samples, and the sampling time, while improving the quality of the reconstructed image.

  • Many studies have been performed for the elimination of speed and position sensors which require the additional mounting space, reduce the reliability in harsh environments and increase the cost of a motor. This paper investigates an improved sliding mode observer for the sensorless speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The proposed control strategy is the sliding mode observer with a variable boundary layer for a low-chattering and fast-response control. The proposed algorithm is verified through the simulation and experimentation.

  • Speed and torque controls of permanent magnet synchronous motors are usually attained by the application of position and speed sensors. However, speed and position sensors require the additional mounting space, reduce the reliability in harsh environments and increase the cost of a motor. Therefore, many studios have been performed for the elimination of speed and position sensors. This paper investigates a novel speed sensorless control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The proposed control strategy compensates a speed error through the difference between the calculated and measured reactive power. The proposed algorithm is verified through the simulation and experimentation.

  • High-Cr martensitic steel HT-9 is one of the candidate materials for advanced nuclear energy systems. Thanks to its excellent thermal conductivity and irradiation resistance, ferritic/martensitic steels such as HT-9 are considered for in-core applications of advanced nuclear reactors. The harsh neutron irradiation environments at the reactor core region pose a unique challenge for structural and cladding materials. Microstructural and microchemical changes resulting from displacement damage are anticipated for structural materials after prolonged neutron exposure. Consequently, various irradiation effects on the service performance of in-core materials need to be understood. In this work, the fundamentals of radiation damage and irradiation effects of the HT-9 martensitic steel are reviewed. The objective of this paper is to provide a background introduction of displacement damage, microstructural evolution, and subsequent effects on mechanical properties of the HT-9 martensitic steel under neutron irradiations. Mechanical test results of the irradiated HT-9 steel obtained from previous fast reactor and fusion programs are summarized along with the information of irradiated microstructure. This review can serve as a starting point for additional investigations on the in-core applications of ferritic/martensitic steels in advanced nuclear reactors.

  • Our understanding on the plant's capability to acquire the nutrients from the soil under harsh circumstance, like unfavorably high pH, and the plant's capability to protect itself under very low soil pH, has been remarkably increased in the recent years. Having those knowledges, it seems not to be wise to abide to the traditional approach to deal the problems of acidic or alkaline soils via chemical methods like liming or using acidic materials. Instead, we may try to select the crops and varieties that can better withstand soil acidity or alkalinity. This stance will be more welcomed when the conservation of environments is high priority issue.

  • The use of shear studs usually placed in the form of mechanical shear connectors makes it possible to adopt composite steel-concrete structures in various structures, and steel-concrete plate composite (SCP) is being seriously considered for the installation of storage tanks exposed to harsh environments. However, manufacturing of SCP must be based on the application of existing design guidelines which require very close arrangement of shear studs. This means that the direct application of current design guidelines usually produces very conservative results and close arrangement of shear studs precludes pouring concrete within exterior steel faceplates. In this light, an improved guideline to determine the stud spacing should be introduced, and this paper proposes an improved ratio of the stud spacing to the thickness of steel plate on the basis of numerous parametric studies to evaluate the relative influence of the stud spacing on the stability of the SCP.
