  • In this paper, we proposed AC/DC boost converter to improve input current harmonic reduction in SMAW(shielded metal-arc welding). The proposed harmonic reduction with the boost converter design and the UC2854 integrated circuit which controls the converter, The topology of welding power supply is made of a pair of boost converter and welder half-bridge IGBT inverter. The voltage arc is modeled by a variable resistance in series with a voltage source. The results has been confirmed by PSIM simulation tool. The simulation results show that input at current is nearly sinusoidal with low harmonic contents and sinusoidal input current waveform at high power factor.

  • This paper presents an improved direct power control (DPC) strategy for grid-connected voltage source inverter (VSI) under unbalanced and harmonic grid voltage conditions. Based on the mathematic model of VSI with the negative sequence, 5th and 7th harmonic voltage components consideration, a PI controller is used in the proposed DPC strategy to achieve the average output power regulation. Furthermore, vector PI controller with the resonant frequency tuned at the two times and six times grid fundamental frequency is adopted to regulate both negative and harmonic components, and then two alternative targets of the balanced/sinusoidal current and smooth active/reactive output power can be achieved. Finally, simulation results based on MATLAB validate the availability of the proposed DPC strategy.

  • The increasing use of nonlinear loads has resulted in an increase in the harmonic content of the load current for power transformers. Transformers subject to harmonic currents have higher losses and need to be derated. This paper presents a simple method for determining the capability of transformers to supply harmonic load currents and shows that the application of capacitor banks with a series connected reactor and harmonic filters will geatly increase the capability of transformers. The EDSA program was used as a simulation tool for the carse study.

  • In most inverter/converter applications SVPWM method is a preferred approach since it shows good characteristics in linear modulation range and waveform quality. In this paper, we propose a new carrier based SVPWM method for multi-level system, First, we survey the conventional carrier based SVPWM method, and investigate the problem of the conventional one for the multi-level system with the focus on the switching frequency harmonic flux trajectories. Finally, we propose a new carrier based SVPWM method that can reduce harmonic distortion. Simulation and experimental results are given for verification of the proposed SVPWM method.

  • We investigate the numerical instability of linear prediction for discrete harmonic spectra of audio signals. It is identified that the eigenvalue spread is very large when discrete harmonic spectra are confined only in a lower part of the entire signal bandwidth. A simple method that redefines the sampling frequency and associate harmonic frequencies is proposed to improve the numerical stability. Simulation results using real audio signals indicate its superior stabilizing ability and improved accuracy in the discrete spectral estimation for both LP and DAP.

  • When large penetration of the distributed generators (DGs) such as photovoltaic (PV) systems is growing up in grid system, it is important to quickly prevent islanding caused by power system fault to ensure electrical safety. We propose a novel active method for islanding prevention by harmonic injection synchronized with the exciting current harmonics of the pole transformer to avoid mutual interference between active signals. We confirm the validity of the proposed method by performing the basic tests of islanding by using a current source superimposed the harmonic active signal. Further, we carry out the simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC, and verify the fast islanding detection.

  • A harmonic drive is compact torque transmission device with no backlash which is widely applied in industrial field to transmit torque precisely. However, one of the disadvantages of harmonic drives is the existence of mechanical flexibility caused by its structural properties, which imposes great limitation on designing precise controller This paper proposes a nonlinear controller for synchronous operation of DC servo-motors with harmonic drive, using Integrator Backstepping method. Furthermore, an alternative algorithm for serial type synchronous operation of multiple DC servo-motors is proposed. Simulation results by SIMULINK for proposed controller shows considerably small error and rapid approach to reference input, which can be adapted to industrial applications.

  • Many practical flow problems are defined with the circular boundary. Fluid flows within a circular boundary are however susceptible to a singularity problem when the cylindrical coordinates are employed. To remove this singularity a method has been developed in this study which uses the local harmonic functions in discretization of derivatives as well as interpolation. This paper describes the basic reason for introducing the harmonic functions and the overall numerical methods. The numerical methods are evaluated in terms of the accuracy and the stability. The Lamb-dipole flow is selected as a test flow. We will see that the harmonic-function method indeed gives more accurate solutions than the conventional methods in which the polynomial functions are utilized.

  • The most widely used primary protection for the internal fault detection of the power transformer is current ratio differential relaying (CRDR) with harmonic restraint. However, the second harmonic component could be decreased by magnetizing inrush when there have been changes to the material of the iron core or its design methodology. The higher the capacitance of the high voltage status and underground distribution, the more the differential current includes the second harmonic during the occurrence of an internal fault. Therefore, the conventional second harmonic restraint CRDR must be modified. This paper proposes a numerical algorithm for enhanced power transformer protection. This algorithm enables a clear distinction regarding internal faults as well as magnetizing inrush and steady state. It does this by analyzing the RMS fluctuation of terminal voltage, instantaneous value of the differential current, RMS changes, harmonic component analysis of differential current, and analysis of flux-differential slope characteristics. Based on the results of testing with WatATP99 simulation data, the proposed algorithm demonstrated more rapid and reliable performance.

  • An advanced active power filter for the compensation of instantaneous harmonic current components in nonlinear current load is presented in this paper. A novel signal processing technique using an adaptive neural network algorithm is applied for the detection of harmonic components generated by three-phase nonlinear current loads and this method can efficiently determine the instantaneous harmonic components in real time. The control strategy of the switching signals to compensate current harmonics of the three-phase inverter is also discussed and its switching signals are generated with the space voltage vector modulation scheme. The validity of this active filtering processing system to compensate current harmonics is substantiated on the basis of simulation results.
