  • Electric power quality in power transmission/distribution systems has considerably been deteriorated with the increase in the capacity of distributed generators (DGs). It is because inverters, connecting DGs to conventional power grids, tend to generate harmonic current and voltage. For harmonic mitigation, a large amount of research has been done on passive and active filters, which have been operating successfully in many countries. This paper, therefore, presents how to adopt the filters to an inverter-based DG, with considering a system consisting of both inverter-based DG and harmonic filters. In particular, this paper describes the simulation results using the PSCAD/EMTDC: firstly, the relationship between total harmonic distortion(THD) of current and output power of DG: secondly, the harmonic mitigation ability of passive and active filters. The system, furthermore, is obliged to satisfy the regulations made by Korean Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO). In the regulations, power factor should be maintained between 0.9 and 1 in a grid-connected mode. Thus, this paper suggests two methods for the system to control its power factor. First, the inverter of DG should control power factor rather than an active filter because it brings dramatic decrease in the capacity of the active filter. Second, DG should absorb reactive power only in the range of low output power in order to prevent useless capacity increase of the inverter. This method is expected to result in the variable power factor of the system according to its output power.

  • In this paper, simulation and experimental results are presented, including the implementation of a digital controller for robust output voltage control of a single-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) and total harmonic distortion (T.H.D.v) analysis. Typically, the VSIs uses a proportional integral (PI) controller for the current controller on the inner loop and a proportional resonant (PR) controller for the voltage controller on the outer loop to control the output voltage. However, non-linear loads still produce high-order odd harmonic distortion. Therefore, in this paper, a proportional multiple resonance (PMR) controller with a resonance controller for odd harmonic frequencies is proposed to suppress harmonic distortion. Analyze the frequency response of controllers for VSI plants and design PMR controllers. Through simulation, the total harmonic distortion characteristics of the output voltage are compared and verified when PI and PMR are used as voltage controllers. Both linear and non-linear loading conditions were considered. Finally, the effectiveness of the PMR controller was demonstrated by applying it to a 3kW VSIs prototype.

  • Three-level NPC inverters have been put into practical use for years especially in high voltage high power grids. This paper researches three-level active power filters (APFs). In this paper a mathematical model in the d-q coordinates is presented for 3-phase 3-wire NPC APFs. The deadbeat control scheme is obtained by using state equations. Canceling the delay of one sampling period and providing the predictive value of the harmonic current is a key problem of the deadbeat control. Based on this deadbeat control, the predictive output current value is obtained by the state observer. The delay of one sampling period is remedied in this digital control system by the state observer. The predictive harmonic command current value is obtained by the repetitive predictor synchronously. The repetitive predictor can achieve a better prediction of the harmonic current with the same sampling frequency, thus improving the overall performance of the system. The experiment results indicate that the steady-state accuracy and the dynamic response are both satisfying when the proposed control scheme is implemented.

  • This paper presents a synchronous-rotating-frame-based control of single-phase UPQC(Unified Power Quality Conditioner) to improve power quality in ac electrified railway systems. The simulation results show that the UPQC can compensate the harmonic supply voltages, the harmonic load currents, and the reactive power in electrified railway systems. Validity of the proposed UPQC control method based on the synchronous rotating frame is illustrated through the simulation results.

  • In this paper, a voltage compensator with harmonic current compensating capability is studied and its compensating characteristics are analyzed. Like the hybrid active power filter, the proposed system is composed of parallel LC passive filter and series PWM converter connected to power line through series transformer. It is shown that the compensation of harmonic current generated due to nonlinear loads such as diode rectifier and instantaneous voltage compensation of the source are performed through the proposed compensating system. The operating principle of the proposed system is described through a single-phase equivalent circuit and the control strategy is suggested on the d-q rotating reference frame of the 3-phase system. Also, experiment is carried out to verify compensating characteristics of the proposed system.

  • A new kind of resonant impedance type hybrid active filter (RITHAF) is proposed for dynamic harmonic current suppression and high capacity reactive compensation in medium and high voltage systems. This paper analyzed the different performance of the RITHAF when the active part of the RITHAF is controlled as a current source and as a voltage source, respectively. The harmonic suppression function is defined in this paper. The influences of the changes caused by the grid impedance and the detuning of the passive power filter on the compensating characteristics of the RITHAF are studied by analyzing the suppression function. Simulation and industrial application results show that the RITHAF has excellent performances in harmonic suppression and reactive compensation, which is suitable for medium and high voltage systems.

  • A technique to manage harmonic pollution at the point of common coupling (PCC) has been presented using a control chart. The recursive least-squares technique has been used to estimate the parameters of the Thevenin equivalent load model. With the estimated data from the measured voltage and current waveform at the PCC during certain period violating upper control limit, the individual contributions to the distortion of voltage waveform at an interested harmonic frequency have been calculated and shown by simple graph.

  • In this paper, APF(Active Power Filter) will be treated in order to improve the output current distortion of the AC source. APF generates the harmonic current which contributes to a source side harmonic reduction. We can extract the compensating current of the parallel APF with phase transformations and the proposed current control method. Therefore, the calculation times is short and the control method is simple compared with conventional hysteresis methods. Experimental results verify that the system using the proposed method appers a good performance.

  • This paper proposes a harmonic a harmonic reduction technique of the parallel-connected twelve-pulse thyristor rectifiers. The proposed system is an improvement over the diode rectifier system with an active interphase reactor [2]. In this scheme, a low KVA (0.15 Po (PU) ) active current source injects a triangular current into an interphase reactor of a twelve-pulse thyristor rectifier along the phase delay angle. The current injection results in near sinusoidal input current with less than 1% THD. Detailed analysis of the proposed scheme along scheme along with design equations is illustrated. Simulation results verify the concept.

  • An error-compensated pulse width modulator (ECPWM) is proposed to improve the baseband harmonic performance and the switching loss of voltage source inverters (VSIs). Selecting between harmonic distortion and switching loss is a design tradeoff in the conventional space vector pulse width modulation. In this work, an accumulated difference in produced and desired phase voltages is considered to adjust the reference signal. This mechanism can compensate for the voltage error in the previous carrier period. With error compensation every half-carrier period, the proposed ECPWM allows one-half reduction in carrier frequency without scarifying baseband harmonic distortion. The proposed modulator is applied to a three-phase VSI with R-L load and a motor-speed-control system for experiments. The measured efficiency and operating temperature of switches confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
