  • Hardwood cutting propagation and early growth characteristics were investigated in order to develop the method of cutting propagation and to find out growth characteristics in the low altitude for in situ and ex situ conservation of Empetrum nigrum var. japonicum K. Koch, which is typical arctic alpine plants on Mt. Halla. The growth of roots and shoots was different depending on hormone concentrations or soil conditions. The survival rate, rooting rate, root growth, number of root and shoot growth increased with treatment of 100 mg/l or 500 mg/l NAA. Consequently, optimum condition of hardwood cutting was at treatment with 100 mg/l or 500 mg/l NAA. When plantlets from hardwood cuttings were exposed to the field condition, after 7 months survival rate was 73.3% without shading while $91.1{\sim}94.4%$ at shading conditions. In the green house, however, survival rate of plantlets were $95.6{\sim}97.8%$ without shading. The growth of plantlets was different depending on sites and shading conditions. Particularly, the best growth was obtained when the plantlets were grown in shading conditions. It indicates that relative humidity and light intensity are correlated with the growth in the low altitude area.

  • Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii Henry is a short and creeping evergreen shrub which reaches about 60 cm in height and only occurs in the northeast Asia and in the top of high mountains over the Korea. The Korea Forest Service protects it strictly by law since J. chinensis var. sargentii is an eccentric plant and possibly may be exterminated soon in Korea. This study was carried out to develop the propagation technique by cutting for conservation of genetic resources of J. chinensis var. sargentii. The rooting responses of branch cuttings, obtained from hard(May) and semi-hard wood shoots (August) to four growth regulators, namely, IAA, IBA, NAA and Rooton(exceptionally powder method) applied at various concentrations(0, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 $mgL^{-1}$) were examined in mixed soil media. Rooting rate showed significant difference between cutting times, among kinds and among concentrations of growth regulators. The optimum cutting time was April to May in hardwood cutting. The application of IBA 1000 $mgL^{-1}$(rooting rate : 36.4%) was most effective in callus formation and rooting of cutting. Relatively, rooting of cutting of the control taken in May was 30.4%. Root characteristics such as number, length and diameter of root were not significantly affected by kinds and concentrations of growth regulators in hardwood cutting.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the propagation characteristics of Diabelia spathulata (Siebold & Zucc.) Landrein through seeding and cutting methods. The seed germination rate was meager (0.22~3.56%). In hardwood cutting, the highest rooting rate was 36.1% in sand + perlite (2:1) and 37.8% in 1000 PPM of IBA pre-treatment. Softwood cutting showed the highest rooting rate when the cutting diameter was 3 to 5 mm and the cutting length was 7 to 8 cm. In particular, the highest rooting rate of 80% was observed in the sand among the 8 cultivation media treatments. In the case of root cuttings, the rooting rate was 83.3~96.7% in all cultivation media. The highest rooting rate was observed when the diameter of the cutting was 7 to 8 mm, and the length of the cutting was about 10 to 11 cm. Among cutting methods, root cutting showed the highest rooting rate. Division showed a 100% rooting rate regardless of size or growth status. For Diabelia spathulata (Siebold & Zucc.) Landrein, propagation by cuttings was more efficient than seeding. However, Further research on the morphophysiological dormancy and dormancy break of seeds is needed for seed propagation.

  • This study was to investigate the rational propagation of the Vitex rotundifolia, which is distributed as a community naturally at coastal area in Korea. The germination rate of ordinary temperature stored fruits was the highest with 67%. In the matter of the number of seedlings per fruit, 1 seed germinated fruit was the most with 40.3 % and the mean was 1.4 seedlings per fruit. The best rooting rate of both greenwood and hardwood cutting was 96.7% in the case of cuttings soaked in IBA 2500ppm for 1 minute on the Compost+Sand bed-soils. Generally the root development of cuttings was higher in the high IBA concentration with soaking in a moment than in the low IBA concentration with soaking in long time, and bed-soils mixed with sands and composts. And in the rooting rate, greenwood cutting was better about 10% than hardwood cutting of Vitex rotundifolia.

  • The hardwood cutting of Hibiscus syriacus was studied by using 54 different cultivars. In the evaluation of rooting ability and shoot growth, there were much differences between cultivars or groups classified by flower types. The outstanding rooting ability was found in cultivars such as 'Comte de Haimont', 'Hanol-tanshim', 'Hyangdan', 'Nabora', 'Saimdang', whereas 'Ilpyontanshim', 'Lucy', 'Paedal', 'Sohoyang' and other several cultivars showed poor characteristics in their rooting. The longest shoot was observed in 'Hanoltanshim', 'Kreider Blue', 'Nabora', 'New Hamabo', 'Nunbora', while 'Chossarang', 'Lucy', 'Shintaeyang', 'Youngkwang', etc. showed very short shoots. As a result of comparison among three different flower types, semi-doubled flower type showed the most extent of rooting ability and shoot growth.

  • This study was conducted on propagation use for conservation scheme of a threatened plant; Wikstroemia ganpi (Sieb. et Zucc.) Maxim(Geomundo false ohelo). The seed propagation was showed higher (95%) in storage and lower values in ground and cutting. Softwood cutting was higher than hardwood cutting and it was possessing higher ratio of rooting that increase concentration of IBA and NAA. It was determined that for Geomundo false ohelo seedling was effective than cutting. In-situ and ex-situ conservation and restoration of substitute habitats of Geomundo false ohelo is therefore necessary due to human trampling in the habitats, damage, natural selection, loss and suppression.

  • This study was carried out to examine the effects of cutting dates and rooting promoters on rooting of the Rhododendron mucronulatum Turcz. The rooting percentage in greenwood cutting was high in June and decreased after July 3, when reproductive growth began. The best rooting percentage(92.5%) occurred when cutting was completed on June 12. There was no difference in rooting potentials between the greenwood straight cutting and the greenwood heel cutting. Cuttings of R. mucronulatum for. albiflora showed high rooting percentage(85%) similar to the cuttings of R. mucronulatum. Dipping cuttings in NAA $2,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ solution for 15 sec increased the rooting percentage up to 97.5%, and also promoted root growth.
