  • Water hardness is a significant parameter as related to aquatic toxicity of some heavy metals. Hardness dependent metals include cadmium, copper, chromium (III), nickel, lead, zinc and silver. Developed countries have applied the hardness correction procedure to derive the water quality criteria for protecting the aquatic organisms. In the present study, we investigated the hardness correction algorithms used in United States of America, European Union, Australia/New Zealand, and Canada, and analyzed the details associated with those algorithms. Toxicity values of heavy metals were definitely different after hardness correction for all of algorithms analyzed. We found that the hardness corrected toxicity values followed by the algorithms of USA and Australia/New Zealand were very similar or same, however they were slightly different for cadmium at the hardness less than 30 mg $CaCO_3\;L^{-1}$. Among the hardness correction algorithms studied, the algorithm used in Australia/New Zealand appears to be a good choice to apply in Korean situation due to its simplicity compared to the algorithm of USA.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the variation of instrumental charaters during strorage of pine pollen Dasik stored at room temperature. Cohesiveess, chewness, gumness, adhesiveness and hardness were varied significantly while springness was not influenced by storage periods. Cohesiveness after 45 days storage was significantly different from before storage, however, was not different from that of 30 days stored. Chewness of 30 days stored Dasik was significantly different from that of 15 days stored but was not different from that of 45 days stored. Gumness in the Dasik stored for 30 days was significantly different from that of 15 days stored but was not different from that of 45 days stored Dasik. Adhesiveness was decreased with storage periods. Adhesiveness of the Dasik stored for 30 days long was significantly different from that of 15 days stored but was not different from that of 45 days stored one. Hardness was increased with storage periods. Each of the hardness in the Dasik stored for 0, 15, 30 and 45 days were significantly different from each other.

  • The effect of variation in particle size of WC and Co powder on the properties of WC-Co alloys was investigated. WC and Co powders having different particle sizes were used in the fabrication of $WC-10\;wt\%$Co composites. High hardness and low fracture toughness alloy was obtained with the decrease in WC particle size regardless of Co particle size. It was newly found in this investigation that the initial particle size of Co as well as WC had a great role in the microstructure and properties of WC-Co hard materials. The average grain size and fracture toughness of WC-Co alloys using same WC powder size increased and their hardness decreased with the use of relatively finer Co binder.

  • In order to investigate the variation of microstructure and property of the Electro-slag Remelted M2 steel, microstructure observation, hardness, and bending test were performed by using optical microscope. SEM/EDS, rockwell hardness tester, charpy impact tester and bending tester, respectively. It was revealed that the number of inclusions and content of gas elements(S, O, N) in M2 steel fabricated by ESR process decreased markedly compared to those of AIM. It seems to be due to refining effect of ESR process. The volume fraction of carbides in quenched and tempered specimens after austenitizing at 1150$^{\circ}C$ and 1240$^{\circ}C$ was measured. The volume fraction of grain boundary carbides were found to be similar for both specimens. However, The volume fraction of carbides in grain decreased with an increase of austenitizing temperature. When specimen was austenitized at 1150$^{\circ}C$, grain boundary carbides showed needle like morphology. But, the carbides were broken with an increase of austenitizing temperature. The specimen austenitized at 1240$^{\circ}C$ showed higher hardness and lower bending strength compared to that of 1150$^{\circ}C$. As expected, toughness increased with sub-zero quenching treatment.

  • In order to investigate the variations on the ratio of mannose to galactose in the seeds of Phaseolus angularis, 17 local strains (Yangyang, Pyeongchang, Ganghwa, Pocheon, Geumsan, Seocheon, Jincheon, Danyang, Tongyeong, Sancheong, Gumneung, Wolseong, Wando, Gokseong, Okgu, Jangsu, Bukjeju), which are located from $33^{\circ}15'N$ to $38^{\circ}11'N$, were selected according to their latitudes and geographical distances. The seeds of these strains were collected and their contents of mannose and galactose were analyzed. Mannose contents in the seeds were variable, ranging from 17.071 mg/g at its highest (Jangsu) and 6.488 mg/g at its lowest (Geumsan). The contents of galactose also showed remarkable differences, ranging from 9.477 mg/g (Wolseong) to 19.877 mg/g (Jangsu). The local strains were classified into 3 variation types - coastal type I (Wando, Okgu, Bukjeju), the inland type (Jangsu, Weolseong, Danyang, Geumneung, Pyeongchang, Sancheong) and coastal type II (Ganghwa, Seocheon, Tongyeong, Jincheon), as well as 4 strange strains (Gokseong, Yangyang, Pocheon, Geumsan) according to the geographical climatic type and the ratio of mannose to galactose, which indicate the hardness of seeds in Leguminosae and ranged from 0.64 to 1.22. The variation types are very significant genecologically as evidence for microevolution related to natural and artificial selection in cultivated plants.

  • This study was conducted to invent brake of non-steel material without using asbestos and disc pad added $ZrSiO_4$ was made. The physical properties and friction characteristics were investigated by varying methods. The physical properties were inspected of shear strength, hardness, heat expansion, specific gravity, % of gashole, thickness variation, weight variation and pH variation. The friction stability was measured by friction coefficient on variations of speed, temperature and deceleration condition. It was found that the physical properties were in general excellent. According to the friction characteristics tests, $ZrSiO_4$ had an abrasive property. As a results, the friction materials containing $ZrSiO_4$ 3~5vol% showed better resistance to fading and improved friction stability than the materials without ZrSiO$_4$.

  • This study examined the measurement conditions of the texture profile analysis (TPA) experiments that are typically used to measure the physical properties of sausage. As the measurement conditions (compression ratio and cross-head speed) were changed, the significant differences between the values of textural parameters (hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, cohesiveness, chewiness) of samples changed. Furthermore, among the measurement conditions, there was more variation in the significant difference between the value of samples due to a change in the compression ratio than due to a change in the cross-head speed. The highest variation in significant difference was observed between the values of cohesiveness of samples due to changes in measurement conditions, whereas the lowest variation in significant difference was observed between the values of springiness of samples due to change in measurement conditions. Therefore, it is desirable to provide a clear basis for setting specific measurement conditions for TPA test, since significant differences in the values of textural parameters of samples were caused by differences in cross-head speed or compression ratio, not by a difference in samples, when analyzing the cohesiveness of sausage, especially.

  • The Vickers hardness test is a common method used to characterize the hardness of ceramic materials. However, the hardness is not a deterministic value, but is a random variable. The objective of this paper is to investigate the statistical properties of the bending strength and a set of Vickers hardness values in single $ZrO_2$ and composite $ZrO_2/SiC$ with a SiC additive. In this work, we compare the characteristic value and variation with the results based on Weibull statistical analysis. The probability distributions of the bending strength and Vickers hardness agreed relatively well with the Weibull distribution. We evaluate the scale parameter and shape parameter in asreceived $ZrO_2$ and $ZrO_2/SiC$ composite ceramics, as well as in their heat treated ceramics.

  • A bulk-type Ta material is fabricated using the kinetic spray process and its microstructure and physical properties are investigated. Ta powder with an angular size in the range $9-37{\mu}m$ (purity 99.95%) is sprayed on a Cu plate to form a coating layer. As a result, ~7 mm-sized bulk-type high-density material capable of being used as a sputter material is fabricated. In order to assess the physical properties of the thick coating layer at different locations, the coating material is observed at three different locations (surface, center, and interface). Furthermore, a vacuum heat treatment is applied to the coating material to reduce the variation of physical properties at different locations of the coating material and improve the density. OM, Vickers hardness test, SEM, XRD, and EBSD are implemented for analyzing the microstructure and physical properties. The fabricated Ta coating material produces porosity of 0.11~0.12%, hardness of 311~327 Hv, and minor variations at different locations. In addition, a decrease in the porosity and hardness is observed at different locations upon heat treatment.

  • The microstructure, electrical conductivity and hardness variation of an AZ91-5wt%Sn Mg alloy sample during a solid-solution and aging heat treatment were instigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and by Rockwell hardness techniques in this study. The XRD result shows that the main phases in the as-casted alloy are ${\alpha}$-Mg, $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ and $Mg_2Sn$. From the SEM images of the AZ91-5wt%Sn Mg alloy after the solution treatment, the $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ phases in the alloy were found to have dissolved into the matrix with an increase in the holding time during the solution treatment, but $Mg_2Sn$ phases were clearly observable. The highest peak hardness of the AZ91-5wt%Sn Mg alloy is 82HRE at an aging temperature of $200^{\circ}C$.
