  • Piezo-ceramics are special materials which transform energy between mechanical and electrical forms. Bender-elements are composite materials consisting of thin piezo-ceramics and elastic shims, and are widely used as actuators and transducers in the field of electronics, robotics, autos and mechatronics utilizing the effectiveness of energy transformation capability. In geotechnical engineering, commercial bender-elements are used in laboratory as source and receiver in the measurements of soil stiffness. The elements were built by using various metal shims sandwiched between piezo-ceramics and coating over the composite in the research. A pair of elements were buried in a concrete block and used as source and receiver to measure the stiffness of the concrete. The test results were verified by comparing with the resonant column testing results. In a preliminary stage of the development of an in-situ seismic testing equipment using bender-elements for soft clay materials, shear waves were generated and measured by burying the elements in the barrel of kaolinite and water mixture. The measured shear wave signals were so distinct for the first-arrival pick that applicability of the elements in the field measurements is very promising.

  • On-site measurement of ship wave has been carried out in the vicinity of Mokpo inner harbour. The wave data were collected and logged 5Hz by the ultrasonic instrument during 12hour May 17th 2006. The number of data is 216,000 and the maxinum wave heght is 81.41cm in normal weather condition It is found that the wave conditions in this water area are predominantly affected by the ship-generated waved under normal condition By comparing with the wind-generated waves in the open region which are irregular but with dominant directional characteristics, the existing harbor wave field is much more complex.

  • In this study, we tried to describe the distribution patterns of marine opportunistic mollusks in Korean waters where various environmental stresses have been imposed. Five opportunistic molluscan species were found from four types of disturbed benthic environments around Korea. Theora fragilis, Macoma incongrua, Musculista senhousia were typical dominant species mainly in the coastal area such as harbour regions and semi-enclosed regions where their sediments were enriched with organic matter and summer hypoxia occurred. However, in the waste dumping areas located in the Yellow Sea and southeastern shelf, small size bivalves such as Thyasira tokunagai and Raetellops pulchella were typical opportunistic species.

  • This study was carried out for verification of efficiency of seawater exchange breakwater which was installed in joomoongin harbor for the first time in our country. The joomoongin harbor, where seawater exchange breakwater has been constructed, shows typical for fishery and tourist port city specifics of greatest pollutants discharge volume in spring and summer, when tourist inflow and fishery activity is most vigorous. On the East Sea seawater flux through seawater exchange breakwater for the smallest waves (up to 0.5 m) was found out to be $1,526-3,052m^3/day$. After construction of seawater exchange breakwater, Zone 1 and Zone 2 of stagnant water inside the port were found to be a lot improved. Zone 3, adjacent to outport area, was found to be lower comparing with Zone 1 and Zone 2. The results of statistical analysis show that comparing with water quality improvement effect before and after seawater exchange, water quality after installation of seawater exchange breakwater became much better, primarily because of physical change around the harbour.

  • We investigated microbial populations of an upland and cultivated Codonopsis lanceolata. The microbial populations from both types of soils were also investigated. There were more than 10 microorganisms existed in upland than cultivated one. The total viable cell counts of C. lanceolata from upland and cultivated one, especially in the upper zone, were 9.7x10$\^$6/ CFU/g and 4.2${\times}$10$\^$6/ CFU/g, respectively. As a results, upper parts of C. lanceolata in upland were considered to harbour approximately more than 2.3 fold higher microorganisms than in cultivated one. However, the total viable cell counts between the two soil habitat, that is, 1.2${\times}$10$\^$7/ CFU/g from upland and 1.0x10$\^$7/ CFU/g from cultivated, were not significantly different. We also examined the unique flavor producing microorganisms in the soil extract broth including 25% C. lanceolata extract. One microorganism was detected in upper pars of C. lanceolata and upland soil. No. 6, microorganism causing the characteristic flavor of C. lanceolata was continued as Actinomyces by microscopy.

  • It is well known that the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wall affect ship manoeuvring motion This paper deals with the interaction effect acting on a ship navigating closely in the proximity of bank wall. In this paper, the calculation method based on the slender body theory for estimation of the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wall is applied. The hydrodynamic interaction forces acting on a ship during passing through the proximity of the bank wall are predicted to evaluate an influence of these interaction forces on ship manoeuvrability. The calculation method used in this paper will be useful for prediction of ship manoeuvrability at the initial stage of design, for automatic control system of ship in confined waterways, for discussion of marine traffic control system and for construction of harbour.

  • The one-dimensional compressibility of sand is an important property for the estimation of settlement or deformation of sand deposits. The $K_0$ value of sand is also an important design parameter. Experimental results are presented in this paper to study the compressibility of sand in $K_0$ consolidation tests. The $K_0$ consolidation tests were carried out using a triaxial cell and a plane-strain apparatus. Specimens prepared using both the moist tamping and the water sedimentation methods were tested. The testing data demonstrate that the type of testing apparatus does not affect the $K_0$ measurement if proper boundary conditions are imposed in the tests. The data also show that the compressibility and the $K_0$ value of loose sand specimens prepared using the moist tamping method are very sensitive to the variation of void ratio. The $K_0$ values measured from these tests do not agree with the $K_0$ values calculated from Jaky's equation. The compressibility and $K_0$ values of sand obtained from tests on specimens prepared using different preparation methods are different which may reflect the influence of soil fabrics or structures on the one dimensional compression behavior of sand.

  • Longitudinal hull girder vibration has not been occurred severely since 1960's. However, recent low speed diesel driven ships equipped with overcritical shafting system, can be excited heavily in longitudinal direction by shaft axial farce coupled with torsional vibration. In this study the characteristics of longitudinal hull girder vibration of a 73,000 deadweight bulk carrier were investigated through onboard measurement, exciter test, and 3-D FEM analysis. Results showed that the longitudinal hullgirder vibration may occur in the ship which is not set up the barred speed range in engine operation. Moreover, this vibration occurs. only during the low speed voyage in harbour depending upon the ship loading condition.

  • Since traffic congestion ratio at any given port fluctuates on the number of arriving and departing vessels, the total tonnage of freight volume being handled, and the number of berth in operation and other factors, there exists a need to numerically analyze the waterway traffic volume. However, there are no effective regulations in regards to the waterway traffic analysis prior to expansion of a port facility. The current analysis requires the traffic analysis in relation only to the width of the waterway, which clearly falls short of achieving a comprehensive evaluation study that could be used in consideration of port expansion. This study provides five scenarios to execute a comprehensive evaluation study and base for the sensitivity study by analyzing the scenarios. As a result of the sensitivity analysis, the A, B, and C scenarios varies the average arrival ratio of the berth shows 1.1, 1.19, and 1.28 times of delays respectively. Also, The D and E scenarios take place malfunctions of pier shows 1.21 and 1.53 times of delays respectively. Therefore, various strategies of harbor development and method of harbor management are needed for the flexible correspondence to the environmental changes such as the excessive increasing of the freight volume and often taking place of malfunctioning.

  • The marine traffic accidents go on increasing owing to the increment of marine traffic capacity, and the solutions about these matters are vigorously considering by many researchers. When the watch officer navigates to the narrow channel, bend or an area obscured by an intervening obstruction and around the harbour limit he must follow the planned track. The watch officer can safely navigate along the course laid down only when he alters his course in advance before the new course distance earlier than the course alternation point. If we call this point to be changed in advance a turning bearing, the turning bearing is decided according to the direction and the range from the clearing objects. The turning bearing helps the watch officer to determine whether the ship is at wheel-over position or not. The author in this paper suggest how to make and use a curve graph which is decided according to the direction and the distance from the clearing objects. If the watch officer utilize this curve graph he can judge swiftly and precisely whether his ship is at the wheel - over position or not.
