  • In this study, 13 water soluble polymers(6 natural polymer, 7 synthetic polymer) were treated on Hanji. Mechanical properties, morphology and oxidation index with thermal aging were measured on the aged Hanji, dewaxed Hanji and polymer treated Hanji. 3 natural polymer(such as CMC, EC, MC) and 3 synthetic polymers(such as PVA 1500, 2000, PEG 1500) treated Hanji had higher strength than other polymer treated Hanji. The oxidation index of 3% methyl cellulose solution treated Hanji did a little increase with thermal aging. Finally, methyl cellulose was found to be the most efficient method for strengthening the dewaxed Hanji. The best aging safety and thermal stability were obtained at the methyl cellulose 3% water solution.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the physical properties of Hanji made using maize, konyaku, and wheat powders at various concentrations. Regardless of the starch types, the most effective concentration to increase the physical properties of Hanji was 2 percent. They were significantly improved even at the treatment conditions of 0.1 percent. All the Hanji treated showed the increase of the breaking length, bust index, and tear index and the decrease of the folding number. The strength properties of the Hanji treated were markedly improved at 8 to 10 percent weight increase. The highest mechanical properties were found in the Hanji treated with konyaku powder.

  • Many researches for extensive uses of Hanji have been performed. With the advent of an information-oriented age, the development of Hanji which is printable has been considered as a new field of study. Since Hanji has many drawbacks in comparison with common printing papers, that is, rougher surface, huger absorption of ink and lower physical properties and printabilities. Improving the properties and printabilities of Hanji is therefore the most important work to deal with. This study was conducted to find out useful mixed agents for surface sizing suitable for printable Hanji. Four surface sizing agents (CMC, corn starch, PYA, AKD) were applied for mixture in this study. The physical properties of surface sized Hanji were measured. Results obtained were as follows. Based on designated agents according to concentration, each of the mixed agents was prepared. The kinds of mixture were corn starch (3%) and PVA (5%), corn starch (3%) and AKD (0.1%), corn starch (3%) and CMC (1%), AKD (0.1%) and CMC (1%), AKD (0.1%) and PVA (5%), CMC (1%) and PVA (5%). Each mixed surface sizing agents was included with these ratios (100:0, 90:10, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, 10:90, 0:100) respectively. All the mixed agents improved the physical properties and printabilities of Hanji. Among them, mixed agent of CMC (1%) and corn starch (3%) with 90:10 ratio is superior to the others for not only smoothness but also ink printability. In view of the result achieved, it is regarded that it can be fit for using Hanji as a printing paper and turned out to be a good contribution to Hanji industry.

  • The traditional Korean hand-made papers (Hanji) were dyed with colorant extracted from flowers of Sophora japonica L.(pagoda tree), and the effect of various dyeing factors (mordant, mordanting method, pH of dyeing solution, etc.) on colors and K/S values of the dyed Hanji was investigated. Changing mordant affected the color of dyed Hanji. Mordanting with alum, copper acetate made the color of dyed Hanji more yellow, but dyed Hanji mordanted with $FeCl_2$ had dark olive color. The K/S value of the dyed Hanji mainly depended on the pH of the dyeing solution and mordanting method. It was found that sim-mordanting with alum was timesaving and effective dyeing method. The dyed Hanji sim-mordanted with alum had the highest K/S value at low pH (about 4).

  • This study was carried out to develop a new application field of traditional Hanji and obtain the basic data for producing functional Hanji using sawdust ceramics and rice-husk ceramics as an architectural material. The results measuring water vapor permeance and water vapor absorption for using window materials and wallpapers are as follows. Hanji wallpaper has good things in controlling indoor space comfortably. Particularly, ability of controlling humidity of Hanji wallpaper affects indoor space comfort and human health. In the case indoor humidity is higher than outdoor humidity, according to the addition of ceramics, Hanji wallpapers maintain the humidity by retaining water vapor molecules in the pores of ceramics. Thus the Hanji wallpapers with ceramics, in particular rice-husk ceramics, make it superior to non-ceramics Hanji wallpapers in maintaining the humidity indoors.

  • The Hanji dyed with persimmon juice were useful goods in the past, but they are not widely used nowadays despite of their many strong points such as antibacterial and water-resistant properties. The object of this study is to provide useful data for developing new products by using them. We dyed traditional Korean hand-made papers (Hanji) with colorants extracted from fruits of Diospyros kaki and investigated the effect of various dyeing factors (mordant, mordanting method, pH of dyeing solution, light exposure time etc.) on optical and mechanical properties of the dyed Hanji. Changing mordant affected the color of dyed Hanji. The dyed Hanji after-mordanted with Cu mordant had the highest K/S value and showed the deepest yellow and red shade. The best mordanting method was an after-mordanting. The K/S value of dyed Hanji increased with decreasing pH of dyeing solution. The tensile index and size degree values of the Hanji were increased after dyeing.

  • The optimum dewaxing ratio in dewaxing treatment by the heat and pressure method was investigated by considering aging stability of dewaxed Hanji. Commercial Hanji was coated with beeswax and thermally aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Then it was dewaxed using the laboratory sheet press equipped with hot plates on both top and bottom sides. Dewaxing ratio was controlled by pressing temperature and time. Four type of dewaxed Hanji samples with different dewaxing ratio were prepared and thermally aged at $150^{\circ}C$. Then the aging stability of dewaxed Hanji samples was evaluated in terms of optical and strength properties. It was found that the aging stability of dewaxed Hanji was superior with higher dewaxing ratio. The result concluded that, in the aspect of aging stability, the coated beeswax in beeswax-treated Hanji shall be completely removed if the coated wax would be dewaxed.

  • Most of printing paper market today have been occupied by western paper and some machine-made Hanji used don't show the characteristic advantages for traditional hand-made Hanji. Although hand-made Hanji has an aesthetic and qualitative value, it has limited uses because of poor printability as printing paper. Unlike western paper, conventional Hanji cannot be used as Printing paper because it is impossible to make the clear formation of printed dot and to develop a high level of sizing and picking problem occurs during printing. Improvements of physical and optical properties such as roughness, smoothness, air permeability, contact angle, opacity, and paper gloss as well as sizing level were accomplished through internal and surface sizing and calendering, which made the paper better suited for printing and decreased problems during printing.

  • A newly developed functional fiber for textile, Tencel, which is known to have some advantages over wood fiber such as fibrillation, absorbency and so on, was examined to see the possibility of a raw material for hanji. Hanji was manufactured by the conventional handmade method using Tencel of three different fiber lengths with three different levels of mixing ratio of Tencel and paper mullberry fiber, and their physical and calligraphic properties were evaluated and compared with one another. It was needed to develop more efficient beating methods than conventional one such as valley beating for Tencel to be used effectively as a raw material for hanji. It was found out by image analysis that the calligraphic properties of hanji could be improved by mixing of 10 to 20% of Tencel of relatively short-length fiber with paper mulberry.
