  • The optimum dewaxing ratio in dewaxing treatment by the heat and pressure method was investigated by considering aging stability of dewaxed Hanji. Commercial Hanji was coated with beeswax and thermally aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Then it was dewaxed using the laboratory sheet press equipped with hot plates on both top and bottom sides. Dewaxing ratio was controlled by pressing temperature and time. Four type of dewaxed Hanji samples with different dewaxing ratio were prepared and thermally aged at $150^{\circ}C$. Then the aging stability of dewaxed Hanji samples was evaluated in terms of optical and strength properties. It was found that the aging stability of dewaxed Hanji was superior with higher dewaxing ratio. The result concluded that, in the aspect of aging stability, the coated beeswax in beeswax-treated Hanji shall be completely removed if the coated wax would be dewaxed.

  • After manufacturing the natural dyed actual size Hanji using 11 kinds of plant natural dyeing materials and 2 kinds of animal natural dyeing materials, the color characteristics and color change and color fastness after post-mordanting were compared and discussed. The hues of 13 types of natural dyed Hanji were black, PB, and RP, each with 1 type, YP with 3 types, and Y with 7 types. Among the natural dyeing materials, Chinese ink, indigo and Lac showed high color yield and color difference, and violet-root cromwell and gardenia seeds showed low color yield. The color fastness of Hanji dyed with turpentine diluted Ottchil, Pagoda tree seeds, Chinese ink and indigo was excellent, while that of gardenia seeds and violet-root cromwell were very poor. After post-mordanting of natural dyed Hanji with Al, Cu, and Fe mordants, the hue changes were show up the Alnus firma, clove, lac and cochineal. In addition, the color difference was very diverse and was overall the most biggest due to Fe mordant. After 72 hr. of UV irradiation on post-mordanting natural dyed Hanji, hue change was observed in 3 types and color fastness was improved in 8 types by post-mordanting. The Hue and color fastness are significantly different depending on the type of natural dying materials and post-mordants. Therefore, when dyeing Hanji with natural dyes, it is necessary to dye with sufficient knowledges and informations about the desired color and fastness.

  • This study has delved into the evolution of Hanji-manufacturing molds and techniques from ancient times to the present, aiming to uncover the current state of traditional Hanji-making techniques. In the absence of records on Hanji-making, various ancient documents, rare books, and documents during the Japanese occupation period, among other artifacts and relics, were analyzed in this study. It was discovered that a sudden significant transformation occurred in the Hanji field during the Japanese occupation period. Soda ash and caustic soda were commonly used for the pretreatment of White bark. Furthermore, a chemical bleaching powder was introduced for the pretreated White bark. Additionally, manual beating of the bark was replaced by mechanical beating methods. While these changes brought convenience to papermakers, they also resulted in a deterioration of Hanji quality. Furthermore, it was revealed that the term "Hanji" has been in use since at least 1908. Furthermore, this study clarified that Heulimtteugi is not the only traditional Hanji-making method in Korea. Instead, there existed Korea's own traditional Gadoomtteugi method, at least up to the 1930s, before the Japanese-style Gadoomtteugi became common in Korea. Additionally, for the first time, this study raises the possibility of the adoption of mold-hanging techniques into Korea's Heulimtteugi method from foreign sources.

  • To investigate the dying properties of the extracts from different parts of Neolitsea sericea Koidz on Hanji, the dye materials were prepared from the extraction methods using $1{\ell}$ of hot water and alkaline solution with 40 g of leaves, bark, and wood each. K/S values and H (V/C) values of the Hanji dyed at different pH, temperature, time, and concentration of extract were determined using a spectrophotometer, and the maximum absorption wavelength of the dyed Hanji was 400 nm. From the analyzed data, the optimum dying conditions were pH 5 of dying solution, $70^{\circ}C$ of dying temperature, 40 minutes of dying time, and 100% of dye concentration. The color of dyed Hanji was Y to YR and color R- and RP-type could also be formed from the different treatment conditions. From the dyeing using mordants, amount of the bound dye materials was high in the pre-mordanted Hanji and in Hanji treated with extracts from the leaves. Also, the amount of the bound dye materials in the pre-mordanted Hanji was higher when aluminum and iron mordant was used rather than other mordants. Not likely with this, amount of the bound dye materials in the post-mordanted Hanji was higher when copper mordant was used. In color, Hanji treated extracts from the leaves appeared as Y-type and ones treated with extracts from bark and wood showed YR-type.

  • This study researches the current status of shrouds and analyzes the current status of the Hanji shrouds and sets its goal on suggesting the direction for a futuristic shroud design, suitable for the changing funeral culture. For this, the characteristics of traditional shrouds were studied, standard shrouds' and Hanji shrouds' current statuses were researched and analyzed to suggest the development diretion for design of Hanji shrouds. The results of the research showed that the Hanji shrouds are superior in cremation and burial, and the design expressions were more effective. Also the previously established shrouds were shown to have an increase in value through use of different materials, changing designs through various patterns, or through the added symbolic value. Thus the direction of shroud development designs based on the advantages of Hanji have been drawn out to as follows: First, traditional shrouds used the ceremonial dresses, such as official uniforms or wedding dresses, from the Tang dynasty which made it multicolored. Afterwards colors were limited with the use of hemp clothes shrouds but with the appearance of Hanji shrouds, the possibility for mulitcolors and patterns became larger. Second, Hanji is superior in its expression of colors and patterns, making designs with symbolic sides such as religion possible, to meet the demands of the customers. Third, Hanji shrouds are more environmentaly friendly than the standard shrouds in cremation and burial, and it presents a much better image of shrouds for the future society. Such development of Hanji shrouds design developments satisfies the distinct and gentrified demands of the customers and it looks to be able to suggest an opportunity for environmentaly friendly actions while preparing itself for the chaning market demands and values.

  • Many researches for extensive uses of Hanji have been performed. With the advent of an information-oriented age, the development of Hanji which is printable has been considered as a new field of study. Since Hanji has many drawbacks in comparison with common printing papers, that is, rougher surface, huger absorption of ink and lower physical properties and printabilities. Improving the properties and printabilities of Hanji is therefore the most important work to deal with. This study was conducted to find out useful mixed agents for surface sizing suitable for printable Hanji. Four surface sizing agents (CMC, corn starch, PYA, AKD) were applied for mixture in this study. The physical properties of surface sized Hanji were measured. Results obtained were as follows. Based on designated agents according to concentration, each of the mixed agents was prepared. The kinds of mixture were corn starch (3%) and PVA (5%), corn starch (3%) and AKD (0.1%), corn starch (3%) and CMC (1%), AKD (0.1%) and CMC (1%), AKD (0.1%) and PVA (5%), CMC (1%) and PVA (5%). Each mixed surface sizing agents was included with these ratios (100:0, 90:10, 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, 10:90, 0:100) respectively. All the mixed agents improved the physical properties and printabilities of Hanji. Among them, mixed agent of CMC (1%) and corn starch (3%) with 90:10 ratio is superior to the others for not only smoothness but also ink printability. In view of the result achieved, it is regarded that it can be fit for using Hanji as a printing paper and turned out to be a good contribution to Hanji industry.

  • Jeonji technique was widely used in general Hanji handicraft including Jihwa handicraft. But the technique itself has not been passed on. By contrast, Jiseung technique and Jiho technique have been passed on and continuously developed. And although the Huji technique has not been transmitted, it should be vigorously used as a technique of producing the frame in order to revive the authenticity of traditional Hanji handicraft. Jumchi technique, a method of using water to connect between layers, is an effective technique of diversely expressing the feel of materials of Hanji craftworks. Modern Hanji handicraft has used the characteristics of paper and paperboard diversely produced nowadays as much as possible, which shows that it is more likely to develop as handicraft.
