A Direction-Based Vascular Pattern Extraction Algorithm for Hand Vascular Pattern Verification

  • This paper proposes an improved vascular pattern extraction algorithm for person verification applications. The proposed direction-based vascular pattern extraction (DBVPE) algorithm is based on the directional information of vascular patterns. It applies two different filters to the input images: row vascular pattern extraction filter (RVPEF) for effective extraction of the abscissa vascular patterns and column vascular pattern extraction filter (CVPEF) for effective extraction of the ordinate vascular patterns. We use the combined output of both filters to obtain the final hand vascular patterns. Unlike the conventional hand vascular pattern extraction algorithm, the directional extraction approach prevents loss of the vascular pattern connectivity. To validate the DBVPE algorithm, we used a prototype system with a DSP processor. The prototype system shows approximately a three-times better false acceptance rate (FAR) than the conventional single filter algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that can enhance the speed of template matching of hand vascular pattern person verification or recognition system. Various template matching algorithms have advantages in the matching accuracy, but most of the algorithms suffer from computational burden. To reduce the computational amount, with accuracy maintained, we propose following template matching scenario as follows. firstly, original hand vascular image is re-sampled in order to reduce spatial resolution. Secondly, reconstructed image is projected to vertical and horizontal direction, being converted to two one dimensional (1D) data. Thirdly, converted data is used to estimate spatial discrepancy between stored template image and target image. Finally, matching begins from where the estimated order is highest, and finishes when matching decision function is computed to be over certain threshold. We've applied the proposed algorithm to hand vascular pattern identification application for biometrics, and observed dramatic matching speed enhancement. This paper presents detailed explanation of the proposed algorithm and evaluation results.

Biometrics can authenticate identities since they measure unique individual characteristics including fingerprints, hand geometry, iris, hand vascular patterns and facial characteristics. we review the state of the hand vascular patterns identification technology and compare other competitive authentication technologies such as cryptography, electronic signature and PKI.

  • Along with the changing pattern that the construction project is getting complicated, large-scaled and up-to-dated, necessity of efficient management of manpower and resources of the construction site is being increased. In particular, considering that the construction site requires a lot of labor force and in terms of the construction cost, labor cost shares 30-40%, labor management has become a very important factor. In this study, in order to support a stable and successful construction project implementation and supplement the existing system being utilized at the current site, construction site access management automation system based on hand vascular pattern, a biometrics system, is intended to be developed. Relevant theory for the system development and the problem of existing RFID system were evaluated and based on this findings, a system design and DB composition chart were envisaged.   • The following is a taxonomic list of the specific features of external and internal shape and pattern analysis of Paeonia lactiflora PALL. and P. obovata MAX as the standard of herbal medicine. 1. External shape of original plant P. lactiflora has lancelate and elliptical leaves with no hair on both sides. It bears a flower bud at the shoot apex or leaf axil. On the other hand, P. obovata has obovate leaves with hair on the back side. It has a single flower bud at the shoot apex. 2. Physical characteristics of herbal states P. lactiflora has a bright and smooth external surface whose color is light red brown, light gray on its section and it is not easy to cut. On the other hand, P. obovata has a coarse external surface whose color is dark brown, pinkish on its section and it is easy to cut. 3. Physical characteristics of herbal state in currents Paeonia Radix Alba is brown on the external surface, and whitish on its section. On the other hand, Paeonia Radix Rubra is dark brown on the external surface, and yellowish-white on its section. 4. Internal characteristics Internal shape is correspond to that of Paeonia Radix described in literatures. Only P. lactoflora has a concentrated vascular bundle toward centeral cylinder. On the other hand, P. obovata has a scattered vascular bundle at the cortex. 5. Physicochemical pattern by HPLC Both P. lactoflora and P. obovata showed the same pattern. Paeoniforin, a main component, appears upon 13.68 in retention time (Rt) in both. In addition, both contain a large amount of paeoniflorin. Such results will, in the future, be used as basic source for the additional research, such as biological reactions and genetic discrimination.

Relationship between threatened vascular plants and the human population in Japan

  • Using data sets for Japan as a whole, as arranged with approximately $10{\times}10$ km squares (a secondary grid), we investigated the relationship between population density and the habitats of threatened vascular plants listed in the Japanese Red Data Book; depopulated areas in the present and future, areas where under-use may be serious, and those with a predominance of elderly people; and the present state of the habitats in terms of a characteristic land use pattern. Regarding the habitats of threatened vascular plants, the progress of deterioration [$(N_{CR}+N_{EN})/(N_{CR}+N_{EN}+N_{VU})$] in depopulated areas has been confirmed, where $N_{CR}$, $N_{EN}$, and $N_{VU}$ are the numbers of species classified as critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable, respectively. Moreover, in grid squares used by a human such as farmland, the progress of the deterioration simply increases when population density becomes low. However, for many vascular plants, they are particularly endangered in populous areas. Local populations will decrease throughout Japan with the rate of depopulation in and around large cities being relatively slow. We also propose some issues that need further study. The deterioration by human activity may be reduced. On the other hand, some vascular plants may be adversely influenced by depopulation. Additionally, we should keep a close watch on grasslands and water areas in large cities to preserve vascular plants.

Peripheral Arterial Bypass using Interpositional Vein Graft in the Hypothenar Hammer Syndrome: A Case Report (소지구 망치증후군에서 정맥이식을 이용한 동맥우회술: 증례 보고)

  • Purpose: The clinical syndrome of unilateral finger ischemia, caused by digital artery occlusions from embolization from the palmar ulnar artery associated with repetitive striking of the palm, has been called the hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS). We report the case of a man with this unique disease probably caused by manual work. Methods: A 52 - year - old male left - hand dominant manual worker complained of pain and coldness in the left 4,5th finger. On physical examination, there was a tip necrosis and the result of Allen's test was mildly positive(sluggish filling of hand from the ulnar artery). Arteriograms confirmed occlusion of the distal ulnar artery without direct perfusion of the superficial palmar arch and distal digital artery. Surgical bypass with reverse autologous vein grafting was performed between ulnar artery and superficial palmar arch, common digital artery. Results: He had an uneventful postoperative course and has remained asymptomatic for 18 months since discharge. Patency has been confirmed by color doppler with resolution of cold intolerance and successful digital preservation. Conclusion: We introduce very unique pattern of vascular ischemic disease and recommend the arterial bypass with vein interpositional grafting.

Effects of Testosterone, 17β-estradiol, and Progesterone on the Differentiation of Bovine Intramuscular Adipocytes

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of testosterone, 17$\beta$-estradiol, and progesterone on the differentiation of bovine intramuscular adipocytes (BIA). Stromal-vascular (SV) cells were obtained from M. longissimus dorsi of 20 months old Korean (Hanwoo) steers, and were cultured in DMEM containing 5% FBS. The proliferated BIA were induced to differentiate with 0.25 $\mu$M dexamethasone, 0.5 mM 1-methyl-3-isobutyl-xanthine and 10 $\mu$g/ml insulin. During differentiation, the cells were treated with testosterone, 17$\beta$-estradiol, and progesterone at concentrations of $10^{-10}$, $10^{-9}$, and $10^{-8}$ M, respectively, for 12 days. Regardless of its concentration, testosterone remarkably reduced lipid droplets in the cytosol of BIA. On the other hand, 17$\beta$-estradiol and progesterone increased the accumulation of lipid droplets in BIA. Testosterone significantly (p<0.05) decreased GPDH activities with a dose-dependent pattern. 17$\beta$-Estradiol treatment onto BIA during differentiation, however, increased GPDH activity showing the highest activity (11.3 nmol/mg protein/min) at $10^{-10}$ M. Treatment of BIA with progesterone also increased (p<0.05) GPDH activity with the highest activity (13.8 nmol/mg protein/min) at $10^{-9}$ M. In conclusion, the results in the current study suggest that testosterone inhibits differentiation of BIA by suppressing GPDH activity while 17$\beta$-estradiol and progesterone have adverse effects.

Histologic Study Of Different Bioceramic Implants In Intrabony Defects (골내낭에 매식된 수종의 생체요법재료에 대한 조직학적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was designed to compare with the effects of 4 different surface active bioceramics on the healing process of alveolar bone defects in dogs. Artificial alveolar bone defects depth 4-6mm, width 3-4mm) were created with # 6 round bur at interproximal areas of maxillary canine, maxillary 2nd premolar, mandibular canine, and mandibular 3rd premolar. porous hydroxyapatite(Interpore $200^R$) , 45S5 bioglass, CJ4/lOC crystalline glass, and JJ crystalline glass were implanted in intrabony defects randomly. Experimental groups were divided into 4 categories according to its implant material. After implantation, all groups were examined postoperatively 4 weeks to 12 weeks. 3 dogs was selected randomly and sacrificed after vascular perfusion with 2.5% glutaraldehyde at every 4 weeks. Tissue blocks with surroundig alveolar bone and soft tissues were removed and immersed in formaldehyde/glutaraldehyde fixative. After 20 weeks decalcification with EDTA and formic acid, sections were made and observed under light microscope and transmission electron microscope. In all experimental groups, the encapsulation of inactive connective tissue was observed around graft particles in 4 weeks. As time elapsed, the thickness of surrounding connective tissue was decreased. Osteoconductive bone growth pattern was seen apparently in all groups. CJ4/lOC crystalline glass showed the most active bone formation until 8 weeks. 45S5 bioglass was, however, the most active in new bone formation at 12 weeks. Though there was difference in resorption rate among grafting materials, the size of graft particles was decreased gradually. 45S5 bioglass was resorbed faster than the others. On the other hand, porous hydroxyapatite was degraded most slowly. Phagocytosed particulate matters was observed in the cytoplasm of multinuclear multinuclear giant cell and macrophage under transmission electron microscope. The results suggested suggested that 45S5 bioglass and CJ4/lOC crystalline glass may have some enhanced reparative potential when compared to porous hydroxapatite in the treatment of periodontal defeds. JJ crystalline glass reguires a further investigation of the safety of its use.
