  • The occurrence and strength of the Asian Dust over the Korea Peninsular have been increased by the expansion of the desert area. For the continuous monitoring of the Asian Dust event, the geostationary satellites provide useful information by detecting the outbreak of the event as well as the long-range transportation of dust. The Infrared Optical Depth Index (IODI) derived from the MTSAT-1R data, indicating a quantitative index of the dust intensity, has been produced in real-time at Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) since spring of 2007 for the forecast of Asian dust. The data processing algorithm for IODI consists of mainly two steps. The first step is to detect dust area by using brightness temperature difference between two thermal window channels which are influenced with different extinction coefficients by dust. Here we use dynamic threshold values based on the change of surface temperature. In the second step, the IODI is calculated using the ratio between current IR1 brightness temperature and the maximum brightness temperature of the last 10 days which we assume the clear sky. Validation with AOD retrieved from MODIS shows a good agreement over the ocean. Comparison of IODI with the ground based PM10 observation network in Korea shows distinct characteristics depending on the altitude of dust layer estimated from the Lidar data. In the case that the altitude of dust layer is relatively high, the intensity of IODI is larger than that of PM10. On the other hand, when the altitude of dust layer is lower, IODI seems to be relatively small comparing with PM10 measurement.

  • The aim of this work is to investigate the protective efficacy of emodin, an active, naturally-occurring anthraquinone derivative of several traditional Chinese herbs, against Brucella abortus infection in macrophages. Brucella were incubated with different concentrations of emodin and showed that bacterial survival rates were markedly reduced in a dose-dependent manner at increasing incubation time points. Through bacterial infection assay, the highest non-cytotoxic concentration of emodin demonstrated attenuated invasion of Brucella into macrophages, however it did not inhibit the growth of these pathogens within the host cells. On the other hand, emodin effectively decreased the number of bacteria that adhered to host cells, which indicated its potential as an anti-adhesin agent. Furthermore, using immunoblotting and FACS assay for detecting MAPK signaling proteins and F-actin polymerization, respectively, the results showed that the emodin-incubated cells displayed modest reduction in the phosphorylation levels of ERK1/2 and inhibition of F-actin polymerization as compared to control cells. These findings indicate the potential use of emodin as a naturally-occurring alternative method for the prevention of animal brucellosis although this requires confirmation of safe clinical doses.

  • Pitches contained in thermomechanical pulp negatively influence paper qaulity and pulp and papermaking process. Without controlling TMP pitches suitably, it is hard to make a certain quality of paper. In order to control pitches in TMP, they must be quantitatively recognized by proper tools. One of the most widely used way to detecting TMP pitches is a staining method using a hydrophobic dye such as Sudan IV. Sudan IV could be used with three different protocols including different application of its dissolution, washing, dyeing time, etc. The dyeing protocols were classified into three categories including Stain I, Stain II, and Stain III. In dyeing time, Stain I required more than 24 hours to dye pitches. On the other hand, Stain III could stain TMP pitches with the most brief way. The images of red-stained pitches could be captured by a stereomicroscope with ${\times}35$ and ${\times}45$ magnifications, and then quantitatively analysed measuring their numbers and areas by Carl Zeiss AxioVision (ver. 4.8.2) program. Among three protocols, both Stain I and Stain III were the most ideal methods to detect TMP pitches because they detected more pitches and bigger pitch areas compared to Stain II against the same specimen. In particular, it was recognized that Stain III could be used as the most useful tool to detect TMP pitches accurately within several minutes.

  • Collapses of cutting area have frequently occurred due to heavy rainfall caused by the recent unusual weather patterns. Collapses of cutting area have the most crucial influence on the damaged property and casualties. Therefore, formulating and preparing an effective measures and control system is urgent. For this reason, in this study, we researched formation investigation method of location-based cutting area for an efficient management of cutting area. We conducted comparative and analytic research on the hand GPS method and DGPS method which is GPS augmentation system, using SBAS signals. The results of the research showed that there was difficult in discerning the accurate shape of cutting area when the existing method was used; however, the detecting the shape of four sides and accurate location was possible when DGPS was used. Consequently, it is possible to establish a preventive measures for cutting area, which considers the condition of the surrounding environment of cutting area because the polygon based management of incision cliff is attainable, apart from the existing control point based approach.

  • An ammonia gas sensor with high sensitivity using thick-film technology were fabricated and examined. The material for sensing the ammonia gas was the mixture of oxide semiconductor, $FeO_{x}-WO_{3}-SnO_{2}$. The sensor exhibits resistance increase upon exposure to low concentration of ammonia gas. The resistance of the sensor is decreased, on the other hand, for exposure to reducing gases such as ethyl alcohol, methane, propane and carbon monoxide. A novel method for detecting ammonia gas quite selectively utilizing a sensor array consisting of an ammonia gas sensor and a compensation element were proposed and developed. The compensation element is a Pt-doped $WO_{3}-SnO_{2}$ gas sensor which shows opposite direction of resistance change in comparison with that of the ammonia gas sensor upon exposure to ammonia gas. Excellent selectivity has been achieved using the sensor array having two sensing elements.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the optimal Robust estimation and scale estimator that could be used to treat the gross errors in a self calibrating bundle adjustment. In order to test the variability in performance of the different weighting schemes in accurately detecting gross error, five robust estimation methods and three types of scale estimators were used. And also, two difference control point patterns(high density control, sparse density control) and three types of gross errors(4$\sigma o$, 20$\sigma o$, 50$\sigma o$) were used for comparison analysis. As a result, Anscombe's robust estimation produced the best results in accuracy among the robust estimation methods considered. when considering the scale estimator about control point patterns, It can be seen that Type II scale estimator provided the best accuracy in high density control pattern. On the other hand, In the case of sparse density control pattern, Type III scale estimator showed the best results in accuracy. Therefore it is expected to apply to robustified bundle adjustment using the optimal scale estimator which can be used for eliminating the gross error in precise structure analysis.

  • This paper presents a implementation method of reliable speed limitation controller considering motor parameter variation in high speed operation. In spinning process of drum washing machine, speed increase has to be limited when unallowable imbalance mass is detected. Otherwise, severe noise and vibration can happen because noise and vibration are proportional to imbalance mass. To detect imbalance mass, d-axis current magnitude is used. However, we have to compensate for back-emf and power supply variation by means of detecting them because d-axis current is affected by both of them. On the other hand, we have to carefully estimate back-emf because back-emf is affected by stator resistance variation and inverter voltage error. Stator resistance variation can happen by manufacturing process for mass production or temperature variation in running. And there are inverter voltage errors between command voltage from micro-computer to inverter and real voltage from inverter to motor because of rising and falling time delay and turn-on resistance of power semiconductor switch. To solve this problem, we propose 2-step align current injection method which is to inject step-wise current right before starting. By this method, we can simply obtain stator resistance by ratio of voltage without inverter voltage error and current, and we can measure inverter voltage error. So we can obtain more exact model current, and then by simple calculation with compensation gain, we can estimate more accurate motor back-emf. We show that this method works well. It is verified through experiments.

  • Fire detectors play an important role in alerting the related people to the initial stages of fire to protect assets and life. Therefore, the performance in detecting fires in the early stages without the risk of false alarms is important. Owing to a recent revision of the national fire safety standards to install smoke detectors in living rooms used for sleeping, staying, hospitalizing in apartment house/efficiency apartment/lodging facility/medical facility/facility for elderly and young, the application of smoke detectors is increasing. On the other hand, there is lack of research in preventing false alarms. This study improved algorithms to prevent false alarms in analog photoelectric smoke detector's due to sudden dust and better classify pollution and fire signals through a self-compensatory function. Through this study, alternatives are suggested to reduce the number of false alarms of Analog Photoelectric smoke detectors, and prevent financial losses due to false alarms.

  • In this work, one dimension $In_2O_3$ nanostructures as detecting materials for indoor toxic gases were synthesized by an electrospinning process. The morphology of electrospun $In_2O_3$ nanofibers was controlled by electrolyte composition, applied voltage and working distance between a nozzle and a substrate. The synthesized $In_2O_3$ nanofibers-based paste with/without carbon black additives was prepared for the integration on a sensor device. The integration of $In_2O_3$ sensing materials was conducted by a hand-printing of the paste into the interdigit Au electrodes patterned on Si wafer. Gas sensing properties on CO and HCHO gases were characterized at $300^{\circ}C$. The evaluated sensing properties such as sensitivity, response time and recovery time were improved in $In_2O_3$ nanofiber pastes with carbon black, compared to the paste without carbon black.

  • None of the recent cases of military secret leakages have leaked internal information using networks. This is because the Internet and the Intranet are physically separated, and has a difficult process when transmitting and receiving data through the Internet. Therefore, most of the leaked paths are to copy and hand over secrets, shoot and send them with a smartphone, or disclose after remembering them. So, the technology of blocking and detecting military secret leakages through the network is not effective. The purpose of this research is to propose a method to prevent information leakage by focusing on the insider behaviors, the subject of leakage, rather than the military secret. The first is a preventive measure to prevent the leakage behavior of military secrets, the second is to block suspicious access to the military secret data, and the last is to detect the leakage behavior by insiders.
