  • The main purpose of this study is that financial resources allocation criteria are examined closely between central government and local government as well as among local government in a river basin. Financial resources allocation principles reflecting water use, flood control, and water quality improvement are reviewed and derived two categories such as common factors and individual factors. The weights of each factor are assigned by analytical hierarchy process. The results of applying four river basins (Han river, Geum river, Nakdong river, Yeongsan-seumjin river) show that rational raising of financial resources are different according to the characteristics of each river basin. Findings are as follows: In case of Han river and Yeongsan Seumjin river, benefit principle and polluter pay principle by individual factors are more attractive than other Principles. Solvency principle by common factor is more acceptable than the other principles in Nakdong-river and Geum-river.

  • Riverbank filtration has been used in advanced countries for 150 years. In Korea, investigations for producing riverbank filtrate started in the Han River, Nakdong River, Geum River, Yeongsan River and Seomjin River basins in the 1990s. The lower part of the Nakdong River has a poorer water quality than the upper part of the river. A water balance analysis and groundwater flow modeling were conducted for the riverbanks of the Nakdong River in Daesan-Myeon, Changwon City. The results of the water balance analysis revealed the groundwater infiltration rate into the aquifer to be 245.26 mm/year (19.68% of the average annual precipitation, 1,251.32 mm). Direct runoff accounts for 153.49 mm/year, evapotranspiration is 723.95 mm/year and baseflow is 127.63 mm/year. According to the groundwater flow modeling, 65% of the total inflow to the pumping wells originates from the Nakdong River, 13% originates from the aquifer in the rectilinear direction, and 22% originates from the aquifer in the parallel direction. The particle tracking model shows that a particle moving from the river toward the pumping wells travels 100 m in 50 days and a particle from the aquifer toward the pumping wells travels 100 m in 100 days.

  • Due to the recent shortage of well-graded river sand resulting from a rapid growth of concrete construction, sea sand, crushed sand, and etc. are increasingly used instead. It is, however, well noted that non-washed sea sand leads to corrosion of the reinforcing steel in concrete, and thus eventually results in damage to concrete. Also, the crushed sand is not being widely used, since it is difficult to maintain the allowable amount of passing 0.08mm sieve and to adjust grading. On the other hand, because the fine sand of Nakdong-River has a poor grading but good quality as a fine aggregate for concrete, it is strongly needed to investigate the fine sand as an alternative fine aggregate. Thus, the purpose of this research is to evaluate the physical properties of the fine sand of Nakdong-River to utilize it actively as a fine aggregate. For this purpose, after the sand samples were collected according to typical location of main stream of Nakdong-River, the physical properties such as density in oven-dry condition, grading, unit volume mass, and etc. of them were estimated. It was observed from the test results that physical properties of the fine sand of Nakdong-River except grading were found to be excellent.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and stable dynamic water quality model which is capable of reflecting various flows and irregular cross sections and handling numerical oscillations under the low flow conditions. In order to solve the oscillation problem under the low flow conditions, diffusive wave method was applied to the low flow condition in developing a hydraulic model, DyHYD. DyQUAL is also developed as a water quality model to calculate up to 12 water quality variables including autochthonous BOD, water temperature, DO, TN and TP. The developed model is applied to both hypothetical river channels and actual Nakdong river watershed. Additionally, the applicability and reliability of the models are verified by comparing simulation results with observed values. Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients are estimated by comparison between simulation results and observed values. In the calibration and verification process, the coefficients varies from 0.391 to 0.591 and 0.704 to 0.902 for discharge, BOD, TN and TP, respectively.

  • Intraspecific sequence variation was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct sequencing of a 350-nucleotide region of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene of two natural populations (Han River and Nakdong River) and one hatchery stock (Jinhae Inland Fisheries Institute) of local strain common carp, one Israeli strain of common carp stock from Pukyong National University (PKU), and one hybrid between Israeli strain of common carp female and local strain common carp male from PKU stock. There is little variation in 350 bases of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene sequences among 2 natural and 1 hatchery local strain common carp populatins, representing abut 7 to 20 nucleotide differences (less than 6%). The sequence of specimens from Han River was more similar to that from Nakdong River (identity=98.0%) than to that from Jinhae Inland Fisheries Institute (identity=96.3%). Sequence variation between Israeli strain and wild local strain common carp was higher than the variation within natural stocks. The level of variation was ranged from 15.7 to 17.7%. The hybrid showed very similar nucleotide4 sequence of 12S rRNA gene to the sequence of Israeli strain with the identity of 98.9%.

  • This study discusses characteristic of spatiotemporal changes of the sand barrier in the Nakdong estuarine for the last century, focusing on geomarphologic evolution and mobility of sand barriers in the view of coastal engineering. The Nakdong estuarine, the research subject, has a complexly changing natural environment by interaction between ground and marine elements such as ocean wave, tidal current, sediment, etc. Moreover, recently, unnatural geomorphologic changes (e.g., seaside reclamation, new harbor construction, etc.) has been radically increased in this area with increasing desire for coastal development. Because of this, its sand barrier has developed quite unstable condition. Therefore, to identify the development process of geomorphologic changes in this area, required is a close examination on historical characteristics of spatiotemporal changes of the sand barrier in relation to surrounding seaside reclamation and physical environmental changes. This study, based on the marine charts published in between 1927 and 1995 year, analyzes the length and area of the sand barrier for the last hundred years, and investigates the cause of the changes by looking into the change of water depth for the last two years and doing ocean-physical site observations. In conclusion, the sand barrier of the Nakdong estuarine expands toward the open sea by $7.4{\sim}26m$ in annual average, maintaining a fixed distance of $1,241{\sim}1.279m$, and its area is expected to increase about $2.8km^2$ annually. This is characterized by the wocean wave from the open sea and the discharge of Nakdong River.

  • This investigation is performed to prepare reducing method drained floating debris from the river This paper is present an investigation result of the marine debris characteristics that drained from korea 4 big river(han river, kum river, youngsan river, nakdong river) during July and August. A mount of floating debris different with rainfall. Short heavy rain like as 150mm/day floating debris drained lower, almost floating debris drained when a flooding cause by continuance heavy rain. Floating debris draining is not continuance, but concentrated on a flooding. All debris is do not drained ocean, a lot of debris accumulated riverside. Floating debris is drained with plant and configuration is similar with other river. But, the component ratio is different, so that, to Prepare removing method for floating debris consider that effect of plant debris.

  • Phylogenetic relationships and DNA polymorphism among local populations of the Korean native catfish species, Liobagrus mediadiposalis, have been investigated based on mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences. As a result, three genetically distinct groups of local populations were recognized based on the phylogenetic tree constructed. The first group was called "Nakdong-river group" that included the local populations from Geumho-river, Gyeongho-river, and Deokcheon-river; the second one was "Geum-river group"; the third one was represented as "Seomjin-river group" that included the samples from Seomjin-river, Dongjin-river and Geokum-do. The phylogeny also implied that the ancestral group of L. mediadiposalis have first evolved to Nakdong-river group, and later two local populations (Geum-river and Seomjinriver group) were diverged from the other lineage. DNA polymorphisms we observed were 4.4~4.7% between Geum-river group and Seomjin-river group, 5.1~5.5% between Seomjinriver group and Nakdong-river group, and 5.5~5.7% between Nakdong-river group and Geumriver group. These results indicated the long period of geographic isolation due to the river system in Korea caused such high degrees of DNA polymorphisms between local populations of L. mediadiposalis.

  • We investigated the deposition characteristics and mass transport flux estimation of the Nakdong estuary, Korea. To understand the effects of the tidal current circulation that influences estuary terrain changes, we used a 2D numerical model to map seawater circulation under three different situations, with the level of river flow being set as none or flood. The net-water flux of the cross-sectional area between sandbars (known as dung) was estimated. From our review of previous research, we know that the development of local sandbars shifted from the west to the east side of the estuary after the construction of the Nakdong River dike. Current development is occurring mostly at the Bakhap-dung near Tadea. The seawater circulation pattern over this large-scale area of tidal na is brings changes related to the quantity of the outflow from the Nakdong River. Based on the calculated results for the net-water flux of the cross-sectional area, we see very strong accumulation in local waters around Jangjiado, Bakhapdung, and Tadae under flood river flow conditions, but accumulation in local waters around Jinudo under the other states of flow. Consequently, in the Nakdong estuary, the main sensitive regions that are affected by changes in the flow of river discharge are the local waters around Jangiado, Bakhapdung, Tadae, and Jinudo.

  • The aims of this study were to investigated the occurrence of caffeine and carbamazepine in Nakdong river basin (8 mainstreams and 2 tributaries) and the behavior of caffeine and carbamazepine under drinking water treatment processes (conventional and advanced processes). The examination results showed that caffeine was detected at all sampling sites (5.4~558.5 ng/L), but carbamazepine was detected at five sampling sites (5.1~79.4 ng/L). The highest concentration level of caffeine and carbamazepine in the mainstream and tributaries in Nakdong river were Goryeong and Jinchun-cheon, respectively. These pharmaceutical products were completely removed when they were subject to conventional plus advanced processes of drinking water treatment processes. Conventional processes of coagulation, sedimentation and sand-filtration were not effective for their removal, while advanced processes of ozonation and biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration were effective. Among these pharmaceuticals, carbamazeoine was more subject to ozonation than caffeine.
