The Tumor Suppressor, p53, Negatively Regulates Non-Canonical NF-κB Signaling through miRNA-Induced Silencing of NF-κB-Inducing Kinase

  • NF-κB signaling through both canonical and non-canonical pathways plays a central role in immune responses and inflammation. NF-κB-inducing kinase (NIK) stabilization is a key step in activation of the non-canonical pathway and its dysregulation implicated in various hematologic malignancies. The tumor suppressor, p53, is an established cellular gatekeeper of proliferation. Abnormalities of the TP53 gene have been detected in more than half of all human cancers. While the non-canonical NF-κB and p53 pathways have been explored for several decades, no studies to date have documented potential cross-talk between these two cancer-related mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that p53 negatively regulates NIK in an miRNA-dependent manner. Overexpression of p53 decreased the levels of NIK, leading to inhibition of the non-canonical NF-κB pathway. Conversely, its knockdown led to increased levels of NIK, IKKα phosphorylation, and p100 processing. Additionally, miR-34b induced by nutlin-3 directly targeted the coding sequences (CDS) of NIK. Treatment with anti-miR-34b-5p augmented NIK levels and subsequent non-canonical NF-κB signaling. Our collective findings support a novel cross-talk mechanism between non-canonical NF-κB and p53.

  • The thermal decomposition mechanism of BaTiO($$C_2$$O_4$)_2$ $4H_2$O has been investigated employing TG, DTG, and DTA techniques. The intermediate compounds and the gaseous products of decomposition were examined by IR spectrometer and X-ray analyser. The decomposition proceeds through five steps. The first step which is the dehydration of the tetrahydrate is followed by the decomposition of oxalate groups. During the second decomposition, half a mole of carbon monoxide is evolved. The oxalate groups are completely destroyed in the range $260~460^{\circ}C$, resulting in the formation of a carbonate which retains free carbon dioxide in the matrix . the final decomposition of the carbonate takes place between $650~750^{\circ}C$ and yields $BaTiO_3$.

  • When teaching traditional pattern-themed textile design, it has been found that many students struggle during the investigation stage of traditional patterns and complete the development of patterns in relatively simple layout methods, such as block patterns and half drop patterns. Until now, digital textile design textbooks lack content on how to develop patterns. Judging that the current teaching method leads to difficulties in developing a new sense of textile design, this study focused on Heesch-tiling tessellation and software called TESS, a program that can transform patterns themselves. This study is an academic study on the methodology of first developing patterns through TESS, a tessellation program developed for elementary school students in the U.S., and then applying various lines and colors to the complete patterns and textures using Adobe Illustrator. In this study, the concept, formative characteristics, and generative principles of Heesch-tiling tessellation were examined, and the process of developing new patterns using the TESS program, which can be used to create patterns through Heesch-tiling principles, was intended to help in textile design education. Therefore, after analyzing the comprehensive concepts and principles of tessellation, the next step is to understand the principles and the characteristics of pattern making only for Heesch-tiling tessellation, and then ultimately to develop new patterns. While patterns using traditional tessellation layouts have been characterized mainly by repeated geometric shapes, Heesch-tiling tessellation can express surrealistic attributes, such as those by painter M. C. Escher or style elements such as those in neo-pop.

The acceptance of family diversity among college students and related variables (대학생이 인식하는 가족 다양성 수용도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the acceptance of family diversity among college students and related variables. Method: Data were collected by a structured questionnaire with 280 students who attended in three universities located in J province. SPSS Statistics Program version 24.0 was used to analyze the collected data. To answer the research questions, descriptive statistics, t-test, F-test, Pearson's correlation analyses, and regression analyses were performed. Results: The major results of the survey were summarized as below. First, the acceptance of family diversity among college students was slightly higher than the middle level(M=12.11). Most students accepted nuclear family as a typical family. More than half of the students accepted single parent families, adaptive families, step families, unmarried mother families, childless couples, homosexual families, elderly women living alone, and families composed of siblings as a family. Second, there was a significant difference by religiosity. Students without religion were higher than their counterparts with religion in a level of family diversity acceptance. Among the individual factors, third, a level of traditional family value had a significant negative effect on a level of family diversity acceptance. And perspective taking had a positive effect on a level of family diversity acceptance. Fourth, among the family factors, parent-child open communication did not affect a level of family diversity acceptance. However, parents' gender egalitarian beliefs had a significant positive effect on a level of family diversity acceptance. Lastly, regarding the relative effects of the personal and family factors, the traditional family value had the largest effect on a level of family diversity acceptance among college students. Conclusions: Base on these results, the implications and limitations of the study were discussed.

HS Implementation Based on Music Scale (음계를 기반으로 한 HS 구현)

  • Harmony Search (HS) is a relatively recently developed meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, and various studies have been conducted on it. HS is based on the musician's improvisational performance, and the objective variables play the role of the instrument. However, each instrument is given only a sound range, and there is no concept of a scale that can be said to be the basis of music. In this study, the performance of the algorithm is improved by introducing a scale to the existing HS and quantizing the bandwidth. The introduced scale was applied to HM initialization instead of the existing method that was randomly initialized in the sound band. The quantization step can be set arbitrarily, and through this, a relatively large bandwidth is used at the beginning of the algorithm to improve the exploration of the algorithm, and a small bandwidth is used to improve the exploitation in the second half. Through the introduction of scale and bandwidth quantization, it was possible to reduce the algorithm performance deviation due to the initial value and improve the algorithm convergence speed and success rate compared to the existing HS. The results of this study were confirmed by comparing examples of optimization values for various functions with the conventional method. Specific comparative values were described in the simulation.

Implementation of Fixslicing AES-CTR Speed Optimized Using Pre-Computed on 32-Bit RISC-V (32-bit RISC-V 상에서의 사전 연산을 활용한 Fixslicing AES-CTR 속도 최적화 구현)

  • Fixslicing AES is a technique that omits the Shiftrows step to minimize the cost of the linear layer of Bitsliced AES, showing a 30% performance over the Bitsliced technique. However, the amount of code increases to compensate for the omitted shiftrows. Therefore, it is proposed to be divided into Semi-Fixsliced in which only half of shiftrows are omitted and Fully-Fixsliced in which Shiftrows are omitted completely. In this paper, we propose a CTR mode implementation of Fixslicing AES on RISC-V using the pre-computed table technique. By utilizing the characteristics of the CTR mode, it is possible to perform fast encryption by omitting up to the second round SubBytes from the encryption process through pre-computed up to the second round SubBytes operation. Using this technique, it was confirmed that Semi-Fixsliced has a performance of 1,345 cycles per block and a performance improvement of 7% compared to the previous performance result, and Fully-Fixsliced has a performance of 1,283 cycles per block and a performance of 9% compared to the previous performance result on 32-bit RISC-V.

History of Race and Ethics of Friendship: The Caribbean Racial Politics and Jamaica Kincaid's Fiction Revisited through the Later Derrida's Political Philosophy (인종의 역사와 우정의 윤리 -후기 데리다를 통해 다시 본 카리브해의 인종정치학과 자메이카 킨케이드의 작품세계)

  • The purpose of this paper is to make a critique of racial aspects of Caribbean literature more ethical through a constant concern with history and political philosophy. The first step I take for this purpose is a comparative reading of C. L. R. James's view of Toussaint L'Ouverture's position and Frantz Fanon's view of race and class in the historical context of the Caribbean power-relations. In so doing, I examine how Toussaint's and Fanon's wills to negotiation were thwarted in the New World history. To elaborate upon this ethico-political approach, I have recourse to the so-called later Derrida, focusing on his books, such as The Politics of Friendship, Of Hospitality, On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness, etc. Taking an up-close look at Derrida's thought, I argue that his political contemplation of ethics is as effective as his deconstruction of "otherness" in dealing with the nature of ethnic clashes in both the real world and minority literature. In the second half of my paper, I reexamine the issues of race, gender, and class in the three novels of Jamaica Kincaid - Annie John, Lucy, and The Autobiography of My Mother. It is conceivable that from the feminist perspective Kincaid's fiction has been read as a postcolonial Bildungsroman. In my supplementary attempts to this criticism, I reveal that the teenage narrator's precocious awareness is still under the colonial influence in the Annie John section. My analysis of Lucy contends that the reasons why the white woman fails to make friends with the young black woman should be sought in the long history of the U.S. racial politics. In the section of The Autobiography of My Mother, I discuss how difficult it is for a minority woman to liberate from the spell of history insofar as she is engaged in the issue of identity. In closing, I pose a need of consolation that literature may grant us by becoming able to produce a different interpretation on all the bleaker reality.

Structural Behavior of Mixed $LiMn_2O_4-LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ Cathode in Li-ion Cells during Electrochemical Cycling

  • The research and development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) are intensified due to the energy crisis and environmental concerns. In order to meet the challenging requirements of powering HEV, PHEV and EV, the current lithium battery technology needs to be significantly improved in terms of the cost, safety, power and energy density, as well as the calendar and cycle life. One new technology being developed is the utilization of composite cathode by mixing two different types of insertion compounds [e.g., spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $LiMO_2$ (M=Ni, Co, and Mn)]. Recently, some studies on mixing two different types of cathode materials to make a composite cathode have been reported, which were aimed at reducing cost and improving self-discharge. Numata et al. reported that when stored in a sealed can together with electrolyte at $80^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, the concentrations of both HF and $Mn^{2+}$ were lower in the can containing $LiMn_2O_4$ blended with $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$ than that containing $LiMn_2O_4$ only. That reports clearly showed that this blending technique can prevent the decline in capacity caused by cycling or storage at elevated temperatures. However, not much work has been reported on the charge-discharge characteristics and related structural phase transitions for these composite cathodes. In this presentation, we will report our in situ x-ray diffraction studies on this mixed composite cathode material during charge-discharge cycling. The mixed cathodes were incorporated into in situ XRD cells with a Li foil anode, a Celgard separator, and a 1M $LiPF_6$ electrolyte in a 1 : 1 EC : DMC solvent (LP 30 from EM Industries, Inc.). For in situ XRD cell, Mylar windows were used as has been described in detail elsewhere. All of these in situ XRD spectra were collected on beam line X18A at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory using two different detectors. One is a conventional scintillation detector with data collection at 0.02 degree in two theta angle for each step. The other is a wide angle position sensitive detector (PSD). The wavelengths used were 1.1950 ${\AA}$ for the scintillation detector and 0.9999 A for the PSD. The newly installed PSD at beam line X18A of NSLS can collect XRD patterns as short as a few minutes covering $90^{\circ}$ of two theta angles simultaneously with good signal to noise ratio. It significantly reduced the data collection time for each scan, giving us a great advantage in studying the phase transition in real time. The two theta angles of all the XRD spectra presented in this paper have been recalculated and converted to corresponding angles for ${\lambda}=1.54\;{\AA}$, which is the wavelength of conventional x-ray tube source with Cu-$k{\alpha}$ radiation, for easy comparison with data in other literatures. The structural changes of the composite cathode made by mixing spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $Li-Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ in 1 : 1 wt% in both Li-half and Li-ion cells during charge/discharge are studied by in situ XRD. During the first charge up to ~5.2 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, the in situ XRD spectra for the composite cathode in the Li-half cell track the structural changes of each component. At the early stage of charge, the lithium extraction takes place in the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component only. When the cell voltage reaches at ~4.0 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, lithium extraction from the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component starts and becomes the major contributor for the cell capacity due to the higher rate capability of $LiMn_2O_4$. When the voltage passed 4.3 V, the major structural changes are from the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, while the $LiMn_2O_4$ component is almost unchanged. In the Li-ion cell using a MCMB anode and a composite cathode cycled between 2.5 V and 4.2 V, the structural changes are dominated by the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component, with much less changes in the layered $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, comparing with the Li-half cell results. These results give us valuable information about the structural changes relating to the contributions of each individual component to the cell capacity at certain charge/discharge state, which are helpful in designing and optimizing the composite cathode using spinel- and layered-type materials for Li-ion battery research. A study on optical coherence tomography system using optical fiber (광섬유를 이용한 광영상 단층촬영기에 관한연구)

  • In this paper, we studied the OCT(Optical Coherence Tomography) system which it has been extensively studied because of having some advantages such as high resolution cross-sectional images, low cost, and small size configuration. A basic principle of OCT system is Michelson interferometer. The characteristics of light source determine the resolution and the transmission depth. As a results, the light source have a commercial SLD with a central wavelength of 1,285 nm and FWHM(Full Width at Half Maximum) of 35.3 nm. The optical delay line part is necessary to equal of the optical path length with scattered light or reflected light from sample. In order to equal the optical path length, the stage which is attached to reference mirror is moved linearly by step motor And the interferometer is configured with the Michelson interferometer using single mod fiber, the scanner can be focused of the sample by using the reference arm. Also, the 2-dimensional cross-sectional images were measured with scanning the transverse direction of the sample by using step motor. After detecting the internal signal of lateral direction at a paint of sample, scanner is moved to obtain the cross-sectional image of 2-demensional by using step motor. Photodiode has been used which has high detection sensitivity, excellent noise characteristic, and dynamic range from 800 nm to 1,700 nm. It is detected mixed small signal between noise and interference signal with high frequency After filtering and amplifying this signal, only envelope curve of interference signal is detected. And then, cross-sectional image is shown through converting this signal into digitalized signal using A/D converter. The resolution of the OCT system is about 30$\mu\textrm{m}$ which corresponds to the theoretical resolution. Also, the cross-sectional image of ping-pong ball is measured. The OCT system is configured with Michelson interferometer which has a low contrast because of reducing the power of feedback interference light. Such a problem is overcomed by using the improved inteferometer. Also, in order to obtain the cross-sectional image within a short time, it is necessary to reduce the measurement time for improving the optical delay line.
