A sensorineural hearing loss(SNHL) occurs when the cochlea in the inner has functional problem. The region in the cochlea with no(or very few) functioning inner hair cells or neurons called 'dead regions'. Amplification using hearing aid over a frequency range corresponding to a dead region may not a beneficial. In this paper, we compared speech recognition with different location of dead region and gain and searched effective gain for hearing aid with dead region. In order to experiment, eight people who has normal hearing ware tested, and we used white noise and babble noise(SNR=0 dB). we divided by three conditions, low, mid and high frequency dead region. In addition, the gains in dead region ware 14.5 dB, 11.5dB and 6 dB gain. There ware different results by location of dead region. The result of WRS and preference in mid-frequency dead region and high-frequency dead region ware higher than them in low-frequency dead region. When we compared as gains, the score of WRS with lower gain was higher than 14.5 dB gain, and the preference was lower as higher gain.

Corticotropin-releasing factor(CRF), one of the stress driven neuropeptides, was widely proposed to influence hair loss and re-growth. For the development of receptor antagonists, the screening system based on intracellular calcium signal process was developed and optimized. The aequorin parental cells were transfected with CRF1 receptor and alpha 16 promiscuous G protein cDNA to establish HEK293a16/hCRF1, a stable cell line for the human CRF1 receptor. In HEK293a16/hCRF1 cells, the range of sauvagine dose response was 12-fold higher($EC_{50}:15.21{\pm}1.83nM$) than in the transiently expressed cells, hence essential conditions for the antagonist screening experiments such as the robust signals and high solvent tolerance were secured. The standard antagonists for the CRF1 receptor, antalarmin and CP154526, resulted $IC_{50}$ values of $414.1{\pm}5.5$ and $290.7{\pm}1.9nM$, respectively. Similar results were presented with frozen HEK293a16/hCRF1 cells. Finally, our HEK293a16/hCRF1 cells with the aequorin based cellular functional assay can be a model system for the development of functional cosmetics and modulators that can have a clinical efficacy on hair re-growth.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the causes and the effects of korean medicine treatment on alopecia. Methods : 1050 patients with alopecia, who had visited oriental medical clinics from July 2011 to October 2012, were analyzed by self-assessments. And 153 patients of them were treated with korean medicine treatment for 3 months. Treatment results were evaluated by patients' self-assessments and global & enlarged photographic reviews. Results : 1. The gender ratio of male to female was 2:1 and most patients belonged to the 20~30 year old group. 2. Family history of baldness in alopecia patients was a total of 57.3%, paternal 44.4% and maternal 21.2%. 3. Subjective symptoms of fever in parietal region was a total of 97.4% in alopecia patients. 4. After 1 month treatment, the fever in the parietal region was decreased by 37.3% of patients. And their subjective hair loss was also significantly decreased. 5. After 3 months of treatment, the global photographic review was improved by 56.2% of the patients and the enlarged photographic review was significantly improved by 5.2% in patients' total hair count. Conclusions : A significant number of alopecia patients were young and less relative in genetic alopecia causes was less relevant than the past. Recent causes of alopecia were more concerned with the fever in parietal region. According to that reason, cooling effect korean medicine treatment was expected to be effective for febrile alopecia, and actually had significant effects on this study. For future studies, it's long term treatment and follow up studies are needed.

Purpose: Scalp avulsion is a life-threatening injury that may cause trauma to the forehead, eyebrows, and periauricular tissue. It is difficult to treat scalp avulsion as it may lead to severe bleeding. Therefore, emergency scalp replantation surgery is necessary, and we must consider the function, aesthetics, and psychology of the patients. A case of scalp avulsion leading to massive bleeding was encountered by these authors, which led to a failure to achieve the proper operation conditions in an adequate time period. Methods: A 49-year-old female was hospitalized due to having had her head caught in a rotatory machine, causing complete scalp avulsion which included the dorsum of the nose, both eyebrows, and ears. Emergent microsurgical replantation was performed, where a superficial temporal artery and a vein were anastomosed, but the patient's vital signs were too unstable for further operation due to excessive blood loss. Three days after the microanastomosis, venous congestion developed at the replanted scalp, and a medicinal leech was used. Leech therapy resolved the venous congestion. A demarcation then developed between the vitalized scalp tissue and the necrotized area. Debridement was performed 2 times on the necrotized scalp area. Finally, split-thickness skin graft with a dermal acellular matrix ($Matriderm^{(R)}$) was performed on the defective areas, which included the left temporal area, the occipital area, and both eyebrows. Results: The forehead, vertex, right temporal area, and half of the occipital area were successfully replanted, and the hair at the replanted scalp was preserved. As stated above, two-thirds of the scalp survived; the patient could cover the skin graft area with her hair, and could wear a wig. Conclusion: Complete scalp avulsion needs emergent replantation with microsurgical revascularization, but it often leads to serious vital conditions. We report a case with acceptable results, although the microanastomosed vessel was minimal due to the patient's unstable vital signs.

At present, many countries around the world are legalizing cannabis and its products, and research on various treatments using cannabis is being actively conducted. However, the cannabis plant contains other compounds whose biological effects have not yet been established. We investigated the effect of cannabidiol (CBD) on hair growth in human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs). 2,2'-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assays were performed to determine the antioxidant activity of CBD. The HDPCs viability of CBD was examined via water-soluble tetrazolium salt (WST-1) assay. The expression of hair-loss-related markers in HDPCs by CBD treatment was analyzed by real-time PCR and western blotting. The DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging activity assay showed that CBD had superior antioxidant activities. In HDPCs, CBD increased cellular proliferation at concentrations without cytotoxicity. It also increased the expressions of fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1), fibroblast growth factor 7 (FGF7), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF). These results correlated with a decrease in the expression of inhibition-related factors, such as androgen receptor (AR) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-B1). Moreover, CBD resulted in a significant increase in the phosphorylation of AKT and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Therefore, it is suggested that CBD may be a potential remedy for the treatment of alopecia.

Betula platyphylla extract includes various materials which showed biological activity such as terpenoids. For this reason, Betula platyphylla extract has been used to alleviate inflammation. In this study, extract of Betula platyphylla was obtained and purified using several solvents and evaluated whether they showed effect on prevention of hair loss. Cell cytotoxicity assay was performed to investigate the effect of extracts on cell proliferation. Western blotting was performed to observe the changes in expression of several related growth factors such as β-catenin, VEGF, IGF1, and cyclin D. Also, 5-α-reductase activity was measured. The ethyl acetate extract was divided into four partial extracts and named as H3-1, H3-2, H3-3, and H3-4. The H3-2 extract showed proliferation activity of human derma papilla cell and increased the protein expression of several related growth factors such as β-catenin, VEGF, IGF1, and cyclin D, comparable to the effect of Ethyl 3,4,5-Trimethoxy Benzoate (ETB)and Lupeol (LPO). Moreover, we found that the fraction H3 was shown to decrease 5-α-reductase activity while ETB and LPO had no significant effect on 5-α-reductase activity.

Objectives : This study was planed to evaluate clinical status of the alopecia patients who had visited Korean medicine clinic. And the result from this study would provide a standard in Korean medical diagnostic and classification method of alopecia. Methods : Clinical records of 183 patients with alopecia seen from January 2004 to April 2005 at Korean medical clinic was examined. They were classified into 4 different types according to chief complains besides alopecia by 2 Korean medical doctors. Results and conclusions : We made clinical analysis of patients of alopecia from January 2004 to April 2005. Among the alopecia patients who visit Korean medical clinic, people age between 20 and 30 had high ratio. The duration from the recognition of initial hair loss to the time of the first visit to the Korean medical clinic was less than 12 months in 20.8%(38/138), and less than 60 months in 72.2% (132/183). The condition of alopecia was more worse than other alopecia patients who visit the west medical clinic. Also the ratio with increased temperature of face or scalp is chief complaint except alopecia in alopecia patients was high in men and the ratio with dysfunction of digestive system or chronic weakness was high in women. Among the incidence of alopecia, the androgenic alopecia was most in number; 43.7%(80/183) and the sex distribution showed 83 men and 100 women.

Oculodentodigital syndrome(ODD) was first reported by Lohmann in 1920 and termed by Meyer Schwicketath, which they called "dysplasia oculo-dento-digitalis" in 1957. It is somewhat rare heritable disease. ODD is generally inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern with a complex phenotype. The characteristic features are : (1) unique facial features, (2) microphthalmos, (3) syndactyly and camptodactyly of 4th and 5th fingers, (4) osseous anomalies of the middle phalanges of 5th fingers and toes, (5) enamel hypoplasia, (6) dry lusterless hair. We found several occlusal wearing and yellow discoloration of succedaneous teeth, multiple caries lesions, premature loss and pulpal involvement of primary teeth with associated enamel abnormalities caused by generalized enamel hypoplasia in a fairly constant oral finding. Occasionally partial anodontia, microdontia and cleft lip and palate can be manifested. This case, a 9-year-old female with repaired bilateral syndactyly was referred to pediatric dental clinic, Pusan National University Hospital for evaluation of severe attrition of teeth and caries lesions. She had most of the above mentioned typical manifestations of the syndrome. Dental treatment including caries control, stainless steel crown were performed.

Eight nursery to grower pigs exhibiting weight loss and sudden death were diagnosed as postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) based on the results of gross findings, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent antibody test, virus isolation, PCR, serology, and electron microscopy. Groosly, the pigs had a rough hair coats and were severely emaciated. And moot lymph nodes were pale and enlarged. Lungs were not fully collapsed and exhibited 10 to 40% pale red cranioventral consolidation. Histopathologically, typical lymphohistiocytic interstitial to bronchointerstitial pneumonia, chronic lymphadenitis, severe lymphoid depletion, and basophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions were noted in the most lymphoid tissues. Porcine circovirus panicles were observed in the inguinal lymph node of the pigs by electron microscopy. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) antigens or viral DNAs were detected in the lesions of all pigs using immunohistochemistry or PCR. Two PCV2 were isolated from a homogenate of pooled lung and lymph node in 2 of the 5 pigs. Additionally, antigens of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and Hemophilus (H.) parasuis were also detected by immunofluorescent antibody test. Serologically, 55% of randomly selected sows and fattening pigs was serum antibody positive to PCV2 by an indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test and approximately 18 % of animals in the herd were serologically pooitive by the ELISA kit for PRRSV. To our knowledge, this is the first report of PMWS co-infected with PCV-2, PRRS, and H. parasuis in Korea.
This study was conducted to obtain the acute information of the oral dose toxicity of lyophilized water extract of Picrorrhiza Rhizoma (PR) - dried underground stem of Picrorrhiza kurroa, having various pharmacological effects, in male and female mice. In order to calculate 50% lethal dose ($LD_{50}$), approximate lethal dose and target organs, test article was administered once by oral gavage to male and female ICR mice at 2000, 1000, 500 and 250 mg/kg. The mortality and changes on body weight, clinical signs and gross observation were monitored during 14 days after dosing with organ weight and histopathology of 12 types of principle organs. As the results, we could not find any mortality, clinical signs, changes in the body weight and gross findings except for hair loss, a significantly (p<0.05) increase of body weight gains in 2000mg/kg of PR extracts-dosing male group and some sporadic gross findings. In addition, no meaningful changes on the organ weight and histopathology of 12 types of principle organs were detected in the present study except for significantly (p<0.05) but dose independent changes on thymus, spleen and popliteal lymph nodes weights, and some sporadic accidental histopathological findings. The results obtained in this study suggest that the PR extract is non-toxic in mice and is therefore likely to be safe for clinical use. The $LD_{50}$ and approximate lethal dose of PR extracts in both female and male mice were considered as over 2000 mg/kg.
