Investigation of a Hybrid HVDC System with DC Fault Ride-Through and Commutation Failure Mitigation Capability

  • A hybrid HVDC system that is composed of line commutated converter (LCC) at the rectifier side and voltage source converter (VSC) in series with LCC at the inverter side is studied in this paper. The start-up strategy, DC fault ride-through capability, and fault recovery strategy for the hybrid HVDC system are proposed. The steady state and dynamic performances under start-up, AC fault, and DC fault scenarios are analyzed based on a bipolar hybrid HVDC system. Furthermore, the immunity of the LCC inverter in hybrid HVDC to commutation failure is investigated. The simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC show that the hybrid HVDC system exhibits favorable steady state and dynamic performances, in particular, low susceptibility to commutation failure, excellent DC fault ride-through, and fast fault recovery capability. Results also indicate that the hybrid HVDC system can be a good alternative for large-capacity power transmission over a long distance byoverhead line.

제주계통의 안정적 운전에 대한 타당성 연구 (Feasibility Study for the Stable Operation of Cheju Network)

  • 본 논문의 배경은 제주지역의 안정적 전력공급을 위하여 최적의 전력공급체계를 분석한 논문이다. 본 논문에서 검토한 내용은 제주도 전력공급 현황파악 및 문제점 분석, 전력계통 운영측면에서 최적의 전력설비건설 타당성 검토 그리고 경제성 및 신뢰도 검토이다. 결론적으로 2011년에 HVDC 연계 선을 제주에 건설하는 경우에 경제성 평가(30년간 2011년 현가합 비교)를 한 경우 HVDC 연계선 추가건설이 기력(중유)발전이나 LNG 발전 보다 경제적임을 보여주고 있다. 그리고 신뢰도 측면에서도 좋은 역할을 할 것으로 기대되어진다.

  • This paper presents a method for DC voltage control of HVDC system connection of offshore wind farms. In the event of fault in AC grid, HVDC system need to meet LVRT regulations. When HVDC system meet LVRT regulation, unbalance is caused between power input and power output for DC link. Therefore, LVRT regulation lead to DC voltage increase of HVDC system. To control the DC voltage increase, the chopper resistor can be suggested. In this paper, DC voltage suppression is proposed using chopper resistor and de-loading. The effectiveness of the chopper resistor was verified using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • In case of connecting the weak AC system, a detailed attentions are needed. In particular, since HVDC system can control the flow of AC network freely, have to contain the range of stability and safe operation range. This paper deals with HVDC control algorithms, which are operated within 1 second on viewpoint of time domain, that is, transient stability. The target of HVDC introduced in this paper is Jindo-Cheju HVDC system, which will be operated at 2011. The introduced algorithm can be actually implemented to Jindo-Cheju HVDC system.

  • This paper performs a comparison analysis of two types of HVDC system in Jeju power system. A traditional HVDC transmission system had been composed of line commutated converter based on thyristors and the development of semiconductors enables to apply voltage source converter using IGBTs. The detailed parameters of Jeju power system were considered to make a similar condition with real system in real time digital simulator. Two types of HVDC transmission system were modeled and simulated to compare their characteristics in Jeju power system. The simulation results demonstrate that the VSC-HVDC system has more stable performance due to the fast response speed than LCC-HVDC when the transmission capacity was fluctuated.

A Study on an Operation Strategy of Dual-Infeed HVDC System

  • This paper deals with the operation strategy of reactive power in a multi-infeed HVDC (MIHVDC) system, in which several converters are connected to the same or nearby separate AC buses. The potential problems concerning a MIHVDC system when feeding a weak AC network are as follows: the need for coordination of the recovery control, the possibility of voltage instability or low quality of the area connected to the MIHVDC system, and the risk of mutual commutation failures. These problems in MIHVDC systems are similar to those in single-infeed HVDC (SIHVDC) systems, but the differences with the phenomenon of the SIHVDC system are the interactions between converters. The main reason for the potential problems of HVDC systems (MIHVDC or SIHVDC) is voltage variation; therefore, to mitigate the voltage variations, the performances of the HVDC system should be enhanced. Consequently, to mitigate the potential problems of MIHVDC systems, several solutions are suggested in this study, including installing STATCOM and installing a line arrester on the tower. The study results will be applied to a multi-infeed HVDC system in Korea.

  • Recently, as a solution to the problem of maintaining system reliability, stability, and quality occurring worldwide, such as activation of smart grid and recognition of super grid and rapid grid interconnection of renewable energy sources HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) will appear on the front of the electric power system. These concepts are also very important concepts in HVDC systems. When the HVDC system is linked to the existing power system, it is composed of AC/DC/AC conversion device, and these conversion devices are composed of many thyristors. These parts(Devices) are connected in a complicated manner, and they belong to the one with a higher failure rate. However, the problem of establishing the concept of failure rate of HVDC parts directly linked to economic efficiency and the understanding accompanying it are still insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, we establish the meaning of reliability in power system and try to develop a model to analyze and verify the failure rate data of HVDC based on this.

  • This paper proposes pre-analysis on planning of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system applied to Korea electric power grid. HVDC transmission system for interface lines has been considered as alternative solution for high-voltage AC transmission line in South Korea since constructing new high-voltage AC transmission lines is challenging due to political, environmental and social acceptance problems. However, the installation of HVDC transmission system as interface line in AC grid must be examined carefully. Thus, this paper suggests three scenarios to examine the influences of the installation of HVDC transmission system in AC grid. The power flow and contingency analyses are carried out for the proposed scenarios. Power reserves in metro area are also evaluated. And then the transient stability analysis focusing on special protection scheme (SPS) operations is analyzed when critical lines, which are HVDC lines or high voltage AC lines, are tripped. The latest generic model of HVDC system is considered for evaluating the impacts of the SPS operations for introducing HVDC system in the AC grid. The analyses of proposed scenarios are evaluated by electromechanical simulation.

Frequency and Voltage Control Strategies of the Jeju Island Power System Based on MMC-HVDC Systems

  • At present, one of two LCC-HVDC systems is responsible for controlling the grid frequency of the Jeju Island Power System (JIPS). The grid voltage is regulated by using STATCOMs. However, these two objectives can be achieved in one device that is called by a modular multilevel converter-high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system. Therefore, this paper proposes frequency and voltage control strategies for the JIPS based on a MMC-HVDC system. In this case, the ancillary frequency and voltage controllers are implemented into the MMC-HVDC system. The modelling of the JIPS is done based on the parameters and measured data from the real JIPS. The simulation results obtained from the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program are confirmed by comparing them to measured data from the real JIPS. Then, the effect of the MMC-HVDC system on the JIPS will be tested in many cases of operation when the JIPS operates with and without STATCOMs. The objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

  • 본 논문은 HVDC 시스템의 고장분석과 제어게인 파라미터정정에 대한 내용을 다루고 있다. 본 논문에서 다루는 내용은 정류실패에 의한 과전압에 의해서 유발된 실제의 케이블 사고를 다룬다. 그리고 고장을 분석하기 위해서 샘플링 타임이 50us인 정밀 PSCAD/EMTDC Model을 이용하였으며, 최종적으로 분석결과에 의해 HVDC시스템의 제어 파라미터가 정정되었다.
