  • This paper analyses the dynamic performance of HVDC System connected to a weak AC system for various exciter characteristics of synchronous machines connected at the converter bus. Conventionally capacitors are used to supply reactive power requirement at a strong converter bus. But the installation of synchronous machine is essential in a isolated weak network to re-start after a shutdown of HVDC and to increase system strength. The dynamic performance of a synchronous machine depends on the characteristics depends of its exciter. In this paper, several exciter types are used to investigate their effect on the dynamic performance of the HVDC system and modifications to standard exciter topologies are suggested to mitigate observed problems.

  • This paper proposes the installation of a new modular multilevel converter based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system to connect between mainland and Jeju island power systems in Korea in 2020. The purpose is to combine with two old line-commutated converters (LCC)-based HVDC system to achieve a stability of the Jeju island power system. The operation of the overall system will be analyzed in three cases: (i) wind speed is variable, (ii) either one of the LCC-HVDC systems is shutdown because of a fault or overhaul, (iii) a short circuit fault occurs at the mainland side. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is confirmed by the simulation results based on a PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program.

  • Commutation failure can be considered as the severest abnormal operation of thyristor HVDC converter. During the failure, power conversion from DC to AC is stopped until the AC voltage get recovered. The process of thyristor converter is subscribed at normal and abnormal state, respectively. The detection and the protection for Cheju HVDC are explained by computer simulation results.

  • HVDC transmission systems can be configured in many ways to take into account cost, flexibility and operational requirements. [1] For long-distance transmission, HVDC systems may be less expensive and suffer lower electrical losses. For underwater power cables, HVDC avoids the heavy currents required to charge and discharge the cable capacitance of each cycle. For shorter distances, the higher cost of DC conversion equipment compared to an AC system may still be warranted, due to other benefits of direct current links. HVDC allows power transmission between unsynchronized AC transmission systems. Since the power flow through an HVDC link can be controlled independently of the phase angle between the source and the load, it can stabilize a network against disturbances due to rapid changes in power. HVDC also allows the transfer of power between grid systems running at different frequencies, such as 50 Hz and 60 Hz. This improves the stability and economy of each grid, by allowing the exchange of power between incompatible networks. This paper proposed to establish Korean HVDC technology through a cooperative agreement between KEPCO and LSIS in 2010. During the first stage (2012), a design of the ${\pm}80kV$ 60MW HVDC bipole system was created by both KEPCO and LSIS. The HVDC system was constructed and an operation test was completed in December 2012. During the second stage, the pole#2 system was fully replaced with components that LSIS had recently developed. LSIS also successfully completed the operation test. (2014.3)

  • This paper proposes a new invention of the integrated generator converter system for the HVDC transmission. And it analyses the general formula for eddy currents in the rotor iron using the double Fourier series in order to trace the smallest eddy current losses of the system which connects a new designed synchronous generator windings or conventional synchronous generator windings with the v Graetz bridges.

  • Recently, as a solution to the problem of maintaining system reliability, stability, and quality occurring worldwide, such as activation of smart grid and recognition of super grid and rapid grid interconnection of renewable energy sources HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) will appear on the front of the electric power system. These concepts are also very important concepts in HVDC systems. When the HVDC system is linked to the existing power system, it is composed of AC/DC/AC conversion device, and these conversion devices are composed of many thyristors. These parts(Devices) are connected in a complicated manner, and they belong to the one with a higher failure rate. However, the problem of establishing the concept of failure rate of HVDC parts directly linked to economic efficiency and the understanding accompanying it are still insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, we establish the meaning of reliability in power system and try to develop a model to analyze and verify the failure rate data of HVDC based on this.

  • Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)-based HVDC power transmission using a real-time simulator is one of the key technologies in power electronics research. This paper introduces the design methodology of a physical MMC-HVDC control system based on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which has the advantage of high-speed parallel operation, and validates the accuracy of MMC-HVDC control when operated with a Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). Finally, this paper compares and analyzes the characteristics of capacitor voltage balancing methods such as Nearest Level Control (NLC), NLC with a reduced switching frequency, and tolerance band modulation implemented on physical control system.

  • VSC technology is now well established in HVDC and is, in many respects, complementary to the older Line Commutated Converter (LCC) technology. Despite the various advantages of VSC technology, VSC HVDC stations have higher power losses than LCC stations. Although the relative advantages and disadvantages are well known within the industry, there have been very few attempts to quantify these factors on an objective basis. This paper describes methods to determine the operating losses of every component in the valve of VSC-HVDC system. The losses of the valve, including both conduction losses and switching losses, are treated in detail.

  • A new test circuit for an MMC-based valve HVDC power converter is proposed. The proposed scheme satisfies the required clauses from IEC-62501. The valve test current contains second harmonic component and DC offset as well as a fundamental component that is quite similar to the real operating arm current of MMC based HVDC power system. The structure of the proposed test circuit is simple compared to conventional test circuits. Furthermore, the power supply voltage rating of the proposed test circuit is reduced dramatically around 20% of the conventional scheme with the same current rating. The validity of the proposed test circuit is verified through simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper deals with the new HVDC interaction which was observed in the Jeju-Haenam HVDC system. The interaction is not from a system malfunction or controller loop problem but from the change of AC network scheme and the network operating condition. We have found that the interaction is caused by the voltage oscillation between synchronous compensator and HVDC shunt reactor. We analyzed the cause of the interaction and suggested a solution.
