  • Among the commonly known tools to diagnose diabetes are fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1c., and OGTT known as gold standard. However, there can be many disagreements on the ways to diagnose diabetes. In this study, we examined the differences of the types of diabetes according to the applicability of FPG and HbA1c. Moreover, we evaluated the concordance of diagnosis. We excluded subjects with missing glucose and HbA1c data, as well as those previously diagnosed with diabetes, and those who fasted less than 8 hours. The data of 4,502 subjects (1,956 men and 2,546 women) from the 2015 KNHNES were analyzed. We divided these patients into three categories which are normal, prediabetes, and diabetes, based on the FPG and HbA1c. In men, the number of subjects with FPG ranging from 100 to 125 mg/dL and HbA1c ${\geq}6.5%$ was 23 out of 664, and the number of subjects with FPG < 126 mg/dL and HbA1c ${\geq}6.5%$ was 39 out of 86 newly diagnosed diabetes patients. The concordance rate was as follows: Normal 80.3%, prediabetes 44.9%, and diabetes 54.7%. The coefficient of Cohen's Kappa was 0.322 in men and 0.362 in women; this suggests that both gender showed a low concordance rate. However, when we divided them into two categories (nondiabetes and diabetes), Kappa was 0.582 in men and 0.637 in women, showing a relatively high concordance rate. While all subjects with FPG ${\geq}126mg/dL$ showed a significantly high HOMA IR, all subjects with FPG < 126 mg/dL showed a significantly high QUICKI. Considering the low concordance rate for the diagnosis of diabetes and characteristic of diagnostic tests, it is necessary to combine the related tests for diagnosing diabetes.

  • The antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) were studied with respect to Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli by observing the bacterial cells treated or not with Ag-NPs by FE-SEM as well as measuring the growth curves, formation of bactericidal ROS, protein leakage, and lactate dehydrogenase activity involved in the respiratory chain. Bacterial cells were treated with Ag-NPs powder, and the growth rates were investigated under varying concentrations of Ag-NPs, incubation times, incubation temperatures, and pHs. As a result, S. aureus and E. coli were shown to be substantially inhibited by Ag-NPs, and the antibacterial activity of Ag-NPs did not fluctuate with temperature or pH. These results suggest that Ag-NPs could be used as an effective antibacterial material.

  • This study investigated the stability of ethanolic extract from fermented Cirsium setidens Nakai (FCSN) in order to develop functional materials during different storage conditions. We evaluated pectolinarin and pectolinarigenin contents, total phenol content and antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scavenging activity and FRAP assay) of ethanolic extract from FCSN obtained by bioconverison at various temperatures (4, 25 and $50^{\circ}C$) and pHs (4.0, 7.0 and 10.0). Our results show that the pectolinarin, pectolinarigenin, and total phenol contents in ethanolic extract from FCSN were decreased during the storage periods. Moreover, the DPPH radical scavenging activity did not significantly change at $4^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. Pectolinarin and pectolinarigenin contents, total phenol content and DPPH radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract from FCSN at acidic pH (pH 4.0) and neutral pH (pH 7.0) were higher than those at the alkaline pH range. These results indicate that the optimum storage condition of the ethanolic extract from FCSN was $4^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.0~7.0 range.

  • The effects of $CO_2$ enrichment on growth of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were examined. The plants were grown in growth chambers with a 12-h photoperiod and a day/night temperature of $28/21^{\circ}C$ of the seedling stage and $30/23^{\circ}C$ after the panicle initiation stage. The plants were exposed to two elevated $CO_2$ of 500, 700 ppm and ambient levels (350 ppm). At early growth stage of three varieties (IIpumbyeo, Chucheongbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo), the elevated $CO_2$ increased plant height, tiller, leaf area and dry weight. The photosynthetic rate was decreased at 24 days after treatment (DAT) compared to 11 DAT. The elevated $CO_2$ increased plant height and dry weight at panicle initiation stage (PIS) and heading stage (HS) of three varieties (IIpumbyeo, Chucheongbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo). The photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, evapotranspiration rate were decreased at the long days of treatment than that of short days. At entire stages, the elevated $CO_2$ increased the water use efficiency of rice plant because evapotranspiration rate was lowered at the elevated $CO_2$ than ambient levels.

  • This research was conducted to assess the influence of humic or fulvic acid on Bentazone phytotoxicity using a bioassay with hydroponically grown cabbage (Brassica campestris subsp. napus var. pekinensis Makino). Concentrations of Bentazone in the water culture media were ranged from 0 to 32 ${\mu}M $ and those of the organic ligands were 1.0mM as a soluble carbon. Media were prepared in a complete factorial combination with pHs of 4.5, 6.5 and 8.5. The phytotoxicity indices on growth rate and dry weight decrement were employed to evaluate the effects of organic ligands on the Bentazone phytotoxicity. Humic or fulvic acid without Bentazone treatment enhanced the growth of cabbage and this effect was evident at low pH of 4.5. Bentazone led to chlorosis and necrosis on cabbage leaves resulting in the decreases of dry and fresh weights and growth rate. This phytotoxic effect was increased with Bentazone concentration and evident at low pH. At pH 4.5, dry weight was decreased about 63% with 8${\mu}$M of Bentazone treatment. Effective concentration of Bentazone causing 50% decreases in fresh weight as compared to the control was estimated to be 21${\mu}$M. Presence of organic ligand reduced the phytotoxicity of Bentazone to cabbage significantly by increasing yields and growth rates as compared to the treatment of Bentazone alone. At pH 4.5, fulvic acid reduced phytotoxicity of Bentazone upto 46%, and this efficiency of fulvic acid was better than that of humic acid under the same condition.

  • The present study was performed to elucidate the effect of canine electroacupuncture anesthesia on vital signs and blood gas values. Groups were divided into experimental (electroacupuncture: EA) and control (ketamine) groups. The vital signs (body temperature, respiration rate and pulse) and blood gas values (pH, $pCO_2$ and $pO_2$) of venous and arterial blood were determined. Body temperatures of EA group were significant higher than than of ketamine group at 15 min., 30 min., 45min. and 60 min. (p<0.05) after anesthesia, respectively. The respiration rates of EA group were higher than those of ketamine group, however, significant differences were not observed between both groups. The pulses of EA group were significant higher than those of ketamine group at 5 min. (p<0.05), 10 min. (p<0.01), 15 min. and 30 min. (p<0.05) after anesthesia, respectively. The arterial and venous blood pHs of ketamine group were slightly higher than those of EA group, respectively, however, no significant differences were found between both groups. Significant differences were not observed between both groups in the arterial and venous blood $pCO_2$, respectively. The arterial blood $pO_2$ of EA group was significant higher than those of ketamine group at 5 min. (p<0.05) after anesthesia. No significant differences were observed between both groups in the venous blood $pO_2$. These results suggest that the changes of vital signs and blood gas values of EA group are similar to those of ketamine group with the exception of changes in the body temperature, pulse and arterial blood $pO_2$.

  • The RecA protein of Deinococcus radiodurans is essential for the extreme radiation resistance of this organism. The central steps involved in recombinational DNA repair require DNA-dependent ATP hydrolysis by recA protein. Key feature of RecA protein-mediated activities is the interactions with ssDNA and dsDNA. The ssDNA is the site where RecA protein filament formation nucleates and where initiation of DNA strand exchange takes place. The effect of sequence heterogeneity of ssDNA was examined in this experiment. The rate of homopolymeric synthetic ssDNA-dependent ATP hydrolysis was constant or nearly so over a broader range of pHs. For poly(dT)-dependent ATP or dATP hydrolysis, rates were generally faster, with a broader optimum between pH 7.0 and 8.0. Activities of RecA protein were affected by the ionic environment. The ATPase activity was shown to have different sensitivity to anionic species. The presence of glutamate seemed to slimulate the hydrolytic activity. Dr RecA protein was shown to require $Mg^{2+}$ ion greater than 2 mM for binding to etheno ssDNA and the binding stoichiometry of 3 nucleotide for RecA protein monomer.

  • UDs were synthesized from two different polyols(PTMG, PBEAG), ionic chain extender(DMPA), EDA with $H_{12}-MDI$. PU/PMMA hybrids were prepared with free radical polymerization of MMA monomer in MMA-swelled PUD. PUD particle size and film properties were investigated ionic content and polyol type. Mechanical and thermal properties of PU/PMMA hybrid film were studied in terms of PU's ionic content and the venation of PU/PMMA compositions. As DMPA content increased from 2wt% to 10wt% in PUD, particle size of PUD decreased. PUD's particle size with ester type polyol was found to be smaller then ether type polyol used. Phase separation between hard segment(HS) and soft segment(SS) with ionic contents in PU was shown by the thermal, mechanical property measurement. Although the composition of MMA was changed from 0 to 40 wt% in PU/PMMA hybrid, the particle size of the hybrid did not increase. Using the ester type polyol, tensile strength of hybrid was found to increase by 2wt% - 6wt% DPMA content, but as higher content the strength of hybrid decreased. Moreover with the ether type polyol, tensile strength of hybrid was observed to increase by 2wt% - 4wt% DMPA content, while decreasing at higher content. PU and PMMA polymer molecule being mixed in molecular level was confirmed from the pattern of $T_g$ in DSC thermogram.

  • This study was intended to confirm a positive correlation between a understanding and utilization and performance results of the FTA in Gangwon-do. To this end, eighty-six companies(90% SMEs) which participate in both import and export were surveyed regarding their understanding and utilization of the FTA, and current performance was analyzed. The research results are as follows. First, we found a positive correlation between 1) a company's global orientation (as measured in export density as a percentage of profit) and 2) its competitiveness (as measured in annual sales), and a company's degree of utilization of FTA provisions. Second, we found that increased awareness of the provisions of Korea's FTAs was positively correlated with the degree to which companies were able to benefit financially from Korea's FTAs. Third, however, at the time of this study's completion, FTA utilization was not yet positively correlated with statistically significant performance results. Therefore, to increase the utilization and performance of FTA, the Korean government have to make a efficient business models for each industry and support the small and mid-size businesses including Gangwon province's SMEs.
