  • Purpose: This study was a descriptive study to determine knowledge regarding cervical cancer, health beliefs, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rate of female university students. Methods: The subjects of this study were 777 female university students. The data were collected through interviews using a structured questionnaire from september 1 to October 30, 2010. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square test. Results: The mean of cervical cancer knowledge was low (13.75 score). Regarding health beliefs about HPV vaccination, the levels of perceived benefit (3.01 score) and seriousness (2.91 score) were relatively high, whereas the levels of perceived barrier (2.09 score) and susceptibility (2.01 score) were relatively low. The rate of HPV vaccination was 5.5%. Conclusion: These results show that concrete educational programs and advertisement are mandated to reduce HPV infection and increase HPV vaccination rate. Also the strategies emphasizing perceived seriousness and benefits of obtaining HPV vaccination are taken into account in developing educational programs in addition to knowledge improvement on HPV and cervical cancer.

  • The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the main aetiological agent for cervical cancer, one of the most frequent cancers observed in women throughout the world. There are effective programs for reducing the incidence of cervical cancer with HPV vaccination. The objective of this study was to discuss the applicability of the HPV vaccination and the role of nurses in prevention of cervical cancer. Use of bivalent and quadrivalent vaccines has been initiated against the types of HPV which are the primary cause of cancer. The quadrivalent HPV vaccination has entered into the routine vaccination schedule in many European countries for use in children and adolescents between 9-15 years of age and for women between 16-26 years of age, whereas it has been proposed that the bivalent vaccination should be given to girls between 9-18 years of age. While cervical cancer is among the cancers that can be prevented, it is essential to continue screening tests while introducing vaccination in a systematic manner for protection. On this subject, among the most important roles of nurses is to implement the screening programs by fulfilling the caregiving, training and consultancy roles for the society and especially, for high risk groups and to increase the awareness of the people.

  • Background: Limited human papillomavirus (HPV) related knowledge might be a barrier to future vaccine acceptance. From 2008-2010, PATH conducted an HPV vaccination demonstration project in partnership with the government immunization program in Vietnam, which included awareness campaigns prior to vaccination. Objective: To assess and compare knowledge and attitudes about cervical cancer and HPV vaccines between mothers and daughters, and whether knowledge was associated with vaccination status. Methods: We analyzed HPV-related knowledge and attitude data from mother-daughter paired responses to a cross-sectional household survey. After parents completed the survey, daughters were asked the same questions. We calculated the frequency of responses for each question and devised a scaled composite measure for knowledge. Results: Participants believed they had received enough information about cervical cancer and HPV vaccines and it was sufficient to make a decision about vaccination. Fifty percent of the participants knew HPV causes cervical cancer and 80% knew the HPV vaccine prevented cervical cancer. Mothers had more knowledge about cervical cancer and HPV infection (p<0.01), compared to daughters, who had more vaccine specific knowledge (p<0.01). However, the total mean knowledge score was similar for the groups. Girls not fully vaccinated had a lower mean knowledge score than fully vaccinated girls (p<0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the purpose of the HPV vaccine was clearly messaged; however, some misconceptions about cervical cancer and HPV still exist. Limited knowledge about the magnitude of cervical cancer, HPV as a cause of cervical cancer, and HPV vaccines may have contributed to incomplete vaccination.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify and compare the factors associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination intention between male and female high school students. The focus is on the knowledge, attitudes and health beliefs related to HPV. Methods: The participants were 246 male and 298 female students from an academic high school located in Seoul. Data were collected in June 2017, which were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the chi-test, t test, Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson correlation coefficients and logistic regression with SPSS for Windows 21.0. Results: 47.6% of the male participants and 86.2% of the female participants indicated HPV vaccination intention. The median score of the HPV knowledge level was 0 (total score:16) in the boys and 3 in the girls (p<.001). There were significant differences in attitudes and health beliefs related to HPV by gender. Religion (OR=0.50), sexual experience (OR=0.09), safety concerns (OR=0.65), perceived needs (OR=1.59), importance of prevention (OR=1.78) and perceived susceptibility (OR=1.80) determined HPV vaccination intention in the male students, whereas awareness of HVP vaccination (OR=2.25) and importance of prevention (OR=1.92) significantly predicted HPV vaccination intention in the female students. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that different strategies need to be taken for different genders: education focusing on safety concerns as well as perceived needs, importance of prevention and perceived susceptibility for male students and education emphasizing importance of prevention for female students.
