Electrorheology of HMDA Coupled Chitosan Succinate Suspension as an Anhydrous ER Fluid

  • The electrorheology of the HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension in silicone oil was investigated. HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension showed a typical ER response upon application of an electric field. The shear stress for the HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension exhibited an electric field power of 2.0. The experimental results for the HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension was found to be an anhydrous ER fluid.

Absorption Characteristics of Carbon Dioxide in Aqueous AMP Solution Adding HMDA (HMDA 첨가에 따른 AMP 수용액의 이산화탄소 흡수특성)

  • In this study, the possible use of HMDA (Hexamethylenediamine) as additive to enhance reaction between $CO_{2}$ and AMP (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol) which has higher absorption capacity than that of MEA (Monoethanolamine) was investigated. Also, the absorption capacity for $CO_{2}$ was compared with addition of HMDA, piperazine or MDEA (N-methyldiethanolamine) into $30\;wt\%$ AMP at $40^{circ}C$ and $CO_{2}$ partial pressure ranging from 0.5 to 120 kPa. Apparent rate constant ($K_{app}$) and absorption capacity with the addition of $5\∼20\;wt\%$ HMDA into AMP increased $214.2\∼276.3\%$ and $29.9\∼91.7\%$ than those of AMP alone. As a result, when $5\;wt\%$ HMDA added into AMP, the increasing rate of the absorption rate and the absorption capacity was found to be the highest. In addition, the absorption capacity increased $6.8\%,\;9.8\%,\;11.6\%$ with addition of MDEA, piperazine or HMDA respectively as compared to AMP alone at $CO_{2}$ partial pressure of 20 kPa. Consequently, HMDA as additive to improve absorption capacity of AMP was superior to other additives.

  • To determine the effect of chain length and chemical structure of linear amine curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, a standard bifunctional linear DGEBF epoxy resin was cured with EDA and HMDA having amine group at the both ends of main chain in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio in condition of preliminary and post cure. From this work, the effect of linear amine curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties is significantly influenced by numbers of carbon atoms of main chain. In contrast, the results show that the DCEBF/EDA system having two carbons had higher values in the thermal stability, density, shrinkage (%), grass transition temperature, tensile modulus and strength, flexural modulus and strength than the DGEBF/HMDA system having six carbons, whereas the DGEBF/EDA cure system had relatively low values in maximum ekothermic temperature, maximum conversion of epoxide, thermal expansion coefficient than the DGEBF/HDMA cure system. These findings indicate that the packing capability (rigid property) in the EDA structure affects the thermal and mechanical properties predominantly. It shows that flexural fracture properties have a close relation to flexural modulus and strength.

  • To determine the effect of chemical structure of linear amine curing agents on thermal and mechanical properties, standard epoxy resin DGEBA was cured with ethylene diamine(EDA) and hexamethylene diamine(HMDA) in a stoichiometrically equivalent ratio. From this work, the effect of linear amine curing agents on the thermal and mechanical properties is significantly influenced by the chemical structure or chain length of curing agents. In contrast, the results show that the DGEBA/EDA system having the two carbons had higher values in the thermal stability, maximum conversion of epoxide, density, glass transition temperature, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus than the DGEBA/HMDA system having the six carbons, whereas the DGEBA/EDA cure system had relatively low values in the shrinkage(%), thermal expansion coefficient, tensile strength, and had similar values in the maximum exothermic temperature, and conversion of epoxide compared to the DGEBA/HMDA cure system. This findings indicate that packing ability in the HMDA structure affects the thermal and mechanical properties.

The Removal of Carbon Dioxide using AMP+HMDA in Absorption/Regeneration Continuous Process (흡수/재생 연속공정에서 AMP+HMDA를 이용한 이산화탄소의 제거)

  • Increasing amounts of anthropogenic $CO_2$ emitted to the atmosphere are believed to be a significant factor in global climate change. Hence, the method of chemical absorption has been suggested to separate and recover acid gases such as $CO_2$. In this study, the characteristics of absorption and regeneration of $CO_2$ for the absorbent which adding HMDA (hexamethylenediamine) into AMP (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol), hindered amine, was investigated in lab-scale absorption/regeneration reactor. As a result of this study, the removal efficiency of $CO_2$ increased when adding $5.9\%,\;11.7\%\;and\;23.4\%$ HMDA into $30\%$ AMP respectively. Also, the removal efficiency of $CO_2$ increased $6.5\%,\;8.4\%,\;10.3\%$ respectively as compared to AMP alone when the gas flow rate was 7.5 SL/min. In addition, all absorbents used in the study revealed the high stripping efficiency, which was almost $99\%$, at the temperature of $110^{\circ}C$. Thus, the regeneration tower should be operated at $110^{\circ}C$. At this time, the concentration of exhausted $CO_2$ was higher than $99\%$.

  • To study possible modification of acrylic fiber, Cashmilon SF was treated with hexamethylene-diamine(HMDA) in toluene at elevated temperature. Physico-chemical properties of treated fiber were tested by dyeing with benzyl scarlet BS and by measuring tensile strength of the fiber. Following results were obtained from this experiment. 1) HMDA and fiber were condensed at above $120^{\circ}C$. 2) Treated samples could be dyed with acidic dyes. 3) Treatment with HMDA decreased tensile strength of the fiber. This study therefore suggests that HMDA can be used to modify the properties of the fiber.

  • Crosslinking of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) anion exchange membranes, which can be used for capacitive deionization (CDI), was investigated. PPO Anion exchange polymer was prepared through bromination and amination reaction steps and crosslinked with bisphenol A diglycidylether (BADGE), m-phenylenediamine (m-PDA), and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The gelation time by crosslinking was short in the order of HMDA > m-PDA > BADGE. The anion exchange membranes crosslinked at room temperature over a certain amount of crosslinking agent did not dissolve in an aprotic solvent such as 1-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and the chemical durability of their membranes to organic solvent increased. The ion exchange capacity and water uptake of anion exchange membranes crosslinked with different crosslinker (BADGE) contents were measured and compared. The CDI performance of the crosslinked PPO anion exchange membrane immersed in the HMDA solution was almost the same as that of the non - crosslinked membrane except for the initial stage of the adsorption step.

  • The method for the determination of ethylenediamine (EDA) and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) in food simulants was developed, and migration amounts of these compounds was monitored for 124 polyamide (PA) utensils. The diurethane derivatives of EDA and HMDA, which produced by reaction with ethyl chloroformate, were analyzed by using gas chromatograph (GC)/flame ionization detector (FID) and GC/mass spectrometer (MS). The developed method was validated with $0.3\;{\mu}g/mL$ of limit of detection (LOD) for EDA and $0.1\;{\mu}g/mL$ of LOD for HMDA, > 0.999 of linearity($r^2$) and > 88% of recovery. The EDA was detected 1.31 and $02.06\;{\mu}g/mL$ for 2 samples in water. The HMDA was detected $0.29\;-\;0.93\;{\mu}g/mL$ for 3 samples in 20% ethanol and $0.26\;-\;0.44\;{\mu}g/mL$ for 10 samples in n-heptane. These migration levels were below the specific migration limits (SML) of $12\;{\mu}g/mL$ and $2.4\;{\mu}g/mL$ for EDA and HMDA established in EU.

Degradation Characteristics of Aqueous AMP Solution Containing Additives in Separation of $CO_2/H_2S$ ($CO_2/H_2S$의 분리시 첨가제에 따른 AMP 수용액의 열화특성)

  • The method of chemical absorption has been presented to separate and recover acid gases like $CO_2\;and\;H_2S$. But, this method has some problems such as loss of valuable amine and operational problems (forming, corrosion and fouling) by degradation. In this study, we investigated the degradation characteristics of aqueous AMP solution containing additives such as HMDA, MDEA and piperazine. The degradation was affected by temperature and process time. AMP solution absorbing $CO_2\;and\;H_2S$ was degraded 105% and 23% more than pure AMP at $120^{\circ}C$ respectively. In addition, all the additives were degraded significantly as the temperature increased. The order of the degraded amount of additives mixed in the AMP solution containing absorbed $CO_2$ was as followings : HMDA > piperazine > MDEA.

A Study on the CO2 Removal Efficiency with Aqueous MEA and Blended Solutions in a Vortex Tube Type Absorber (Vortex Tube 형 흡수장치에서 MEA와 혼합흡수용액을 이용한 CO2 제거 효율 고찰)

  • In this study, the $CO_2$ removal characteristics of the Vortex tube type absorbtion apparatus were investigated to enhance the compactness of $CO_2$ absorption process and to reduce the amount of absorbing solution of the $CO_2$ separation process. The Vortex tube with the diameter of 17 mm and the length of 250mm was introduced in the experimental apparatus to treat $20Nm^3/hr$ of $CO_2$ containing flue gas. The flue gases for experiments containing 11~13 vol% of $CO_2$ were supplied from the coal-firing CFBC power plant with 12 ton/hr of steam producing capacity. The mixed solutions of 20 wt% of MEA as base solution with the adding solutions like HMDA, AMP and KOH were used as absorbents. The experiments were executed under the various conditions like the absorbing solution concentrations in the range of 20 to 50 wt%, the flow rate of $CO_2$ containing flue gases in the range of 6 to $15Nm^3/hr$ and the flow rate of absorbing solution in the range of 1.0 to 3.0 l/min. As a results, the $CO_2$ removal efficiency of mixed absorbent of 20 wt% of MEA with HMDA was remarkable. From this study, we concluded that the efficient separation of $CO_2$ from flue gases using the features of the Vortex tube type absorbing unit for gas/liquid contact and the separation of gas/liquid be possible. But more works are needed to increase the $CO_2$ removal efficiency of Vortex tube process.
