The Masking Effect According in Olfactory Stimulus on Horns Stimulus While Driving in Graphic Driving Simulator (화상 자동차 시뮬레이터에서 운전 중에 경적음 자극에 대한 후각자극의 마스킹 효과)

  • In this study, the masking effect of olfactory stimulus on the awakening state due to sound stimuli while driving using Graphic Driving Simulator was observed through the response of autonomic nervous system. The test was conducted for 11 males in their twenties. The siren of ambulance car was presented to them as auditory stimulus for 30 secs while driving in a situation of high way in the condition of both peppermint and control, respectively, and LF/HF ratio of HRV (Heart Rate Variability), the activity index of sympathetic nerve, and GSR (Galvanic Skin Response) response were examined. The test was proceeded in the order of three stages, that is, sound stimuli (test 1), driving performance, and sound stimuli (test 2), and fragrance stimulus, driving performance, and sound stimuli (test 3), and the physiological signal of GSR, HRV was measured in the whole stages. As a result of test, comparing the results of before and after auditory stimulus test (1) (p < 0.01), test (2) (p < 0.05), and test (3) (p < 0.01), driving performance test (2) (p < 0.01), test (3) (p < 0.01), and olfactory stimulus test (3) (p < 0.05), respectively, GSR response increased, showing significant difference in all the tests. It indicates that when auditory stimulus was presented to the subjects, they were in the awakening state as sympathetic nervous system got activated. As a result of comparing auditory stimulus while driving before and after presenting olfactory stimulus, there was no significant difference in GSR response. The LF/HF ratio of HRV increased, showing a significant difference only in test (2) (p < 0.05), and in driving performance test (2) (p < 0.05) in auditory stimulus, however, it showed no significant difference in olfactory stimulus. As a result of comparing auditory stimulus while driving before and after presenting olfactory stimulus, there was a decrease, showing significant difference (p < 0.05) in LF/HF ratio of HRV. That is, it means that the activation of sympathetic nervous system decreased, and that parasympathetic nervous system got activated. From these results, it was observed that while driving, the awakening level due to auditory stimulus was settled with olfactory stimulus. In conclusion, it was drawn that while driving, olfactory stimulus could have the masking effect on auditory stimulus.

  • The object of this study is 27 patients who had been treated in the Oriental Medical Hospital at Dong Eui Medical Center during 6 months from January 1998 to June 1998. We proceeded the judgment of Sasang Constitution by Questionaire of Sasang Constitution Classification II(QSCC II). The following conclusion were made in comparison with Questionaire of Sasang Constitution Classification II(QSCC II) and Questionaire of Pusan Sasang seminar. 1. The subject of "the facial type is small and sharp" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Taeumin group and Soyangin group. 2. The subject of "the walking form is fast and shake the body" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Taeumin group and Soeumin group is less than Soyangin group. 3. The subject of "the skin type is white and thin" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Soyangin group, and the frequency of Taeumin group is low marks. 4. The subject of "the skin type is tender and dry" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Taeumin group and Soyangin group is less than Soeumin group. 5. The subject of "the image of face is smart" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Taeumin group and the frequency of Soyangin group is low marks. 6. The subject of "the sweating type is not sweatier" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Taeumin group and Soeumin group is less than Soyangin group. 7. The subject of "the desire of eating is changeable accoding to emotion" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Taeumin group and Soyangin group. 8. The subject of "the health is changeable accoding to the type of stool" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Soyangin group and the frequency of Taeumin group is low marks. 9. The subject of "the type of voiding is changeable accoding to the drinking when they have a fever" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The Differences in Efficacy and Effect of Herbal Extracts by the Part and Solvent Extraction from the Medical Plants (약용식물의 부위별 및 추출용매에 따른 효능효과의 차이)

  • This study was to describe the differences in efficacy and effect of herbal extracts by the part and solvent extraction from the medical plants used as materials of oriental herbs cosmetics. And, this study was to apply to the test method of efficacy and effect related to the antioxidation as herbal extracts, complex of actual ingredient, not existing analytical methods of single ingredient. After screening the medical plants with the antioxidative activity primarily and selecting 11 sorts of medical plants to be used by the part in the literature, this study was to confirm the differences through the well-known test methods like DPPH radical scavenging activity test and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity test. For examples, in case of Trachelospermum asiaticum, compared with the aerial part and fruit, the value of DPPH radical scavenging activity test had $25.2 {\pm} 0.2$ and $62.4 {\pm}1.6$ each. It has shown that the value of fruit had 2.4 times higher effect than the one of aerial part. In case of hydroxyl scavenging activity test, it was effective in the fruit, but it has shown that there was no effect on the aerial part. It showed the same phenomena in some other plants. From the result above, this researcher could understand that it needed to consider extracting the medical plants or plants with the active principle by the part. Also, this study was to confirm the differences in effect according to the solvent as it changed the solvent extraction after selecting a plant (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) widely used for medicine and dye. As a result of measuring the actual value of superoxide scavenging activity test, this study was to consider that there were differences by the part or solvent extraction in extracting and using the medical plants as it has shown that the effect differences produced $10{\sim}80%$ according to the solvent. When it was applied to the products, this study has shown that it needed to decrease the possible errors.

Characteristics of the Incompatible Element Contents of the Ginsengs from Keumsan (금산 지역 인삼의 비호정성 원소 함량 특성)

  • This study is for chemical relationships between ginsengs(2, 3 and 4 yr) and soils from three representative soil types of Keumsan, shale(SL), phyllite(PH) and granite(GR). In the weathered soils, the GR is mainly high. Positive relationships are dominant, and negative correlations are shown in the Y-Nb and Nb-Ta pairs. In the field soils, the GR is high while the SL is low. Regardless of the localities, available correlation relationships are dominant in the GR, and dominant in the 3 year area. In the host rocks, high element contents are shown in the GR. Positive relationships, regardless of the localities, are shown in the Zr-Hf, Ta, Nb-Ta and Hf-Ta pairs. In the ginsengs, chemical contents are distinctive with the different ages. Positive relationships are shown in the Y-Nb pair of the SL, Rb-Y pair of the PH, and Rb-Sr pair of the GR. Relative ratios(GR/SL and GR/PH) of the ginsengs suggest that ginsengs from the GR are higher than those of SL and PH while in the comparisons between PH and SL, 2 year ginsengs are high in the SL and 4 year ginsengs are high in the PH. Relative ratios between weathered and field soils (weathered/field) suggest high element contents in the weathered soils from the SL and PH and in the relative ratios(weathered soil/host rock), high element contents in weathered soils. Relative ratios between field soils and ginsengs(field soil/ginseng), regardless of the ages, show several ten and hundred times, suggestive of high contents in the soils. Comparisons with the overall average contents of each area show differences of several ten to hundred times in the SL and PH, and of several to ten times in the GR. These relationships suggest that contents of the ginsengs from the GR are more similar to the soils relative to those of SL and PH.

Quality Characteristics of Curd Yogurt with Sweet pumpkin (단호박 가루를 첨가한 호상요구르트의 품질 특성)

  • Sweet Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) is rich in minerals, vitamins, and dietary fibers and has less fat. It is thus effective for dieting and for preventing constipation. Sweet Pumpkin contains vitamin A, particularly beta-carotene, which is turned into retinol in the body and helps protect the vision. It is currently on the spotlight as a vision care, anticancer, and diet food, among others, but because it is hard to find yogurt made of Sweet Pumpkin, in this study, Sweet Pumpkin powder was added to yogurt for promotion as a new health food. Yogurt was made with 0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 3% Sweet Pumpkin powder, and the color properties (brightness, redness, and yellowness), viscosity, pH, and acidity were measured through a sensory test (color, flavor, taste, overall acceptability). The storage stability at five-day intervals for one day, five days, ten days, 15 days, etc. was also experimented on. For the color properties, the greater the amount of Sweet Pumpkin powder added, the greater the decrease in the lightness (L) value, but the redness (a) and yellowness (b) values increased (p<0.001). For the viscosity, it was decreased for five days and then increased by 47-68% for ten days. This showed a significant difference in storage stability period: one day (p<0.001), five days (p<0.01), and ten days (p<0.01) (except 15 days). Further, there was a significant difference in pH and acidity [pH: for one day (p<0.001), five days (p<0.01), and ten days (p<0.01); acidity: one day (p<0.001), ten days (p<0.05), 15 days (p<0.001)]. No significant difference in pH was shown, however, for 15 days, and in acidity for five days. The results of the sensory test are highly estimated in the order of 1%>2%.3%>0%>0.5%. The study results indicate that the addition of 1% Sweet Pumpkin powder is most suitable for manufacturing Sweet Pumpkin yogurt.

The Consumption Status and Preference for Sprouts and Leafy Vegetables (새싹채소 및 쌈채소의 선호도 및 소비실태)

  • The purpose of the study was to provide baseline information that could encourage consumers and establish the direction of development for sprouts and leafy vegetables. A survey on the consumption and preference for sprouts and leafy vegetables of 823 people over 20 years of age in Seoul and Gyeonggi province was conducted. The preference for sprouts was higher in men ($3.75{\pm}0.96$) than in women ($3.64{\pm}0.84$), whereas the preference for leafy vegetables was higher in women ($4.06{\pm}0.74$) than in men ($3.88{\pm}0.90$). Based on age, the respondents in their 40s or above had high preferences for sprouts and leaf vegetables due to the importance that they accorded to health and nutrition (p<0.01). The sprouts and leafy vegetables were purchased mainly for their high nutritional value. The purchase frequency of once a month or more for leafy vegetables (82.7%) was higher than that for sprouts (57.1%). The consumers purchased sprouts and leafy vegetables mainly from a large discount store. The respondents in their 20s showed the highest percentage of purchasing from a local store whereas the older ones showed a high preference for traditional markets. The reason for the choice of the place of purchase was convenience. The freshness and price were important factors in the consumption of sprouts and leafy vegetables. In the case of leafy vegetables, the consumers preferred to buy them using the conventional weight measurement system rather than in small packages. On the other hand, mixed small packages were preferred for sprouts. The purchase frequency was correlated with the preferences, need for improvement and purchase intent for sprouts and leafy vegetables. The aspects that require improvement for producing high-quality sprouts and leafy vegetables were the nutritional and functional properties. To increase the consumption of sprouts and leafy vegetables, there is need for variations and improvement of the quality and safety of the products.

Biological activities of isolated phenolic compounds from Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium nakai (마삭줄(Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium nakai)로부터 추출한 pheonolic compounds의 생리활성)

  • This study provided the evidence activity for biological of phenolic compounds from Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium nakaier as a beauty food. The contents of phenolic compounds in water and 70% ethanol extracts were 16.8 mg/g and 38.1 mg/g, respectively. DPPH free radical scavenging activities of water and ethanol extracts at $100{\mu}g/mL$ of phenolic concentration were 80.9% and 83.1%, respectively. ABTS radical decolorization activity was 95.0% in water extracts and 95.8% in ethanol extracts at $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic concentration. Antioxidant protection factor (PF) was determined to 2.43 and 2.45 PF in water extracts and ethanol extracts at $100{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic concentration. TBARs of water and ethanol extracts were 89.9% and 89.3% each at $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic concentration. The inhibitory effect of ethanol extracts at $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic concentration on xanthine oxidase was 50.5%. The inhibitory activity of a-glucosidase was 92.6% in ethanol extracts at $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic concentration. As a result, this study will provide valuable information as a functional material with antioxidant activity, inhibitory activities of xanthin oxidase and ${\alpha}-glucosidase$.

Demand and Awareness of Dental Hygienists for Academic Credit Bank System According to Different Regions (지역별 치과위생사의 학점은행제에 대한 인식 및 요구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of dental hygienists in different regions about credit bank system and their needs for that. The subjects in this study were 312 dental hygienists in dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul, Gyeonggi province, metropolitan cities, Gangweon province and Gyeongsang province. After a survey was conducted in 2008, the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 11.5 program. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. In regard to perception of the credit bank system, 68.3 percent of the dental hygienists were cognizant of that. The dental hygienists from most of the geographic areas were aware of it, but all the forty three dental hygienists from Gangweon province who accounted for 13.8 percent didn't know about that. As for media by which they acquired information on that, many of the dental hygienists learned about it from their acquaintances (46.2%), but that was not the case for the dental hygienists from Seoul and Gyeonggi province. 2. As for expectations for the credit bank system, those from Gyeongsang province had the greatest expectations for that in six out of nine items, which included academic or job performance improvement, acquisition of credits, degree or certificates and access to new technology. 3. Concerning educational spending on the credit bank system, 18.9 percent and 8.7 percent from Seoul/Gyeonggi province and Gangweon province spent less than 30 thousand won, and 19.9 percent from the metropolitan cities spent 30 thousand to less than 50 thousand won. 4. As for the importance of the categories of their major in the credit bank system, those from Gangweon province attached the most importance to oral health education ($3.56{\pm}1.259$), and the dental hygienists from the metropolitan cities put the most stress on preventive treatment ($3.64{\pm}1.191$).

A Study of the Department of Dental Hygiene and Dental Laboratory Technology Student's Demand for the Credit Bank System (학점은행제(치위생과, 치기공과)를 이용한 학사학위 취득에 관한 요구도 조사)

  • To investigate requirements for the process of credit bank system in life-long education institutions attached to colleges, this research was conducted with seniors at the departments of dental hygiene and dental laboratory technology, in the health line of the specific College from March 26 to April 15, 2007, followed by analysis using an SPSS/WIN 12.0 program, obtaining the following results. 1. 89.7% of the respondents had a plan to take a bachelor's degree and 56.1% of whom had such a plan for the purpose of personal development (p<0.05). 2. 73.5% of the respondents preferred the credit bank system in a lifelong education institution attached to a college to take a bachelor's degree. 3. 34.8% presented the greatest advantage of taking a bachelor's degree through the credit bank system that they could take a degree in a short period of time while 33.8% presented the most serious disadvantage that they might low social recognition. 4. As for requirements for the process of operating the credit bank system, 80.3% regarded required subjects for the major as appropriate basic ones. 79.9% regarded it as proper that filling more than 20 credits made it possible to take a degree. 5. As directions for improving the system, it was found that the students was thinking that strict academic record management is needed, and the degrees from the system must be recognized equally to those in regular colleges, social awareness in those degrees should be enhanced, and also credits assigned to cultural subjects should be reduced, and the limitation in the number of credits being able to be obtained in one center should be removed.

A Study on the Use of Dentifrice among Infants and Preschoolers (영유아의 세치제 사용에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the use of dentifrice among children in a bid to provide information on dentifrice including its function to children's parents, the major consumers of dentifrice for child. And it's additionally meant to offer useful information on the production of toothpaste for kid. The subjects in this study were parents with children, who dwelled in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. After a self-administered survey was conducted for about three months from May to July 2007 to gather data on their use of dentifrice for child, a comparative analysis was implemented. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Concerning the state of the use of their children's dentifrice, the largest number of the children(58.1%) started to use toothpaste at the age of one or down, and the most common first toothpaste they used was dentifrice for preschooler(86.8%). As for whether to use fluoride-containing toothpaste, the largest group of the parents(58.1%) gave an affirmative answer. Regarding the form of the toothpaste in use, the majority of their children used toothpaste of cream type(86.2%). The greatest group of the children used the amount of toothpaste that was as large as the three-tenths or four-tenths of the bristles(35.9%). 2. As for the state of the use of dentifrice for kid, the greatest group used that kind of toothpaste(81.4%). In the event of those who didn't use it, the last time when their children used toothpaste for kid was when they were at the western age of 3(33.9%) and 4(33.9%). Concerning the reason why they replaced toothpaste for kid with one for adult, the largest group of the parents did that on their own judgment(58.1%). As to the right time for replacing toothpaste for kid by one for adult, the greatest group considered it advisable for children to start using toothpaste for adult at the western age of 4 or 5(43.2%). 3. In relation to the state of the purchase of toothpaste for their children, the largest group was under the moderate influence of the children when they bought it(45.2%). The greatest group attached importance to the ingredients of toothpaste(41.6%), and the most preferred ingredient was fluoride(56.3%). 53.0 percent took consideration on the content of ingredients or the instructions. 4. In regard to priorities for the choice of toothpaste for their children, they gave top priority to brand(16.7%), followed by quality(14.6%) and ingredients(13.5%). The age of the parents made a statistically significant difference to the children's age when they started using toothpaste, and how they started to do that and whether they used fluoride-containing toothpaste were statistically significantly different according to that as well(p < 0.01). In regard to the impact of the occupation of the parents, the use of fluoride-containing toothpaste was more common among the stay-at-home mothers(p < 0.01).
