The effect of aqueous extract of Isodon japonicus Hara (Labiatae) (IJAE) on mast cell-mediated immediate-type allergic reactions was investigated. IJAE inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis and immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated local anaphylaxis. When IJAE was pretreated at the same concentration with systemic anaphylaxis, serum histamine levels were reduced in a dose-dependent manner. IJAE dose-dependently inhibited histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells (RPMC) activated by compound 48/80. The level of cAMP in human mast cell line (HMC-1) cells, when IJAE was added, significantly was increased, compared with that of normal control. These results indicate that IJAE will beneficial in the treatment of immediate-type allergic reaction.

The study examined the preference and style of consumption of perilla leaves(Perilla frutescens var. japonica Hara), a popular food item in Korea, by consumers in the Daejeon area. Of the respondents 35.2% purchased perilla leaves in a large super-market limited to two to three bundles. Comsumer preferences were to consume the leaves raw or pickled with salt or soy sauce, or use as a fish soup ingredient. The majority of consumers aged 20~29-years-of age preferred to wrap sashimi with perilla leaves. As a side dish, regardless of age, consumers preferred to pan-fried perilla leaves with mincedmeat and perilla leaves.

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of cultivation area with different sea levels on essential oil in the root of Valeriana fauriei var. dasycarpa Hara (Valerianaceae). The total content of the essential oil was not different in various cultivation area, however, its composition varied. The major components were bornyl acetate and sesquiterpene alcohol in three cultivation areas. Among the valepotrate components known as major active components in Europe and Nepal valerian, valtrate was detected in a small amount, but the quantity was not changed.

울릉도 고유종으로 알려진 섬백리향(Thymus quinquecostatus var. magnus (Nakai) Kitam.)의 기준표본 선정을 위하여 동경대학교 표본관에 소장된 표본들을 조사하였으며, 이들 표본들 가운데 Nakai가 나리분지에서 채집한 표본은 선정기준표본으로 설정하였다. 또한 섬백리향의 학명으로 자주 사용되고 있는 T. quinquecostatus var. japonicus H. Hara의 분류학적 실체를 파악하고, 이 분류군과 섬백리향과의 분류학적 차이점을 규명하였다.

Two crinoid specimens of genus Tropiometra were collected from Busan and Tongyeong by SCUBA diving on August 2010 and October 2011, respectively. The specimens were identified as Tropiometra macrodiscus (Hara, 1895), which belongs to the family Tropiometridae of superfamily Tropiometroidea. The genus Tropiometra AH Clark, 1907 comprises four species worldwide at present, and it has not been reported in Korea. Tropiometra macrodiscus was first described by Hara (1895) in Japan. It is difficult to distinguish T. macrodiscus from T. afra (Hartlaub, 1890), there has been confusion with examination of their phylogenetic positions in crinoid morphological classification. Despite this, T. macrodiscus can be distinguished from T. afra based on longer arms, stouter whole-body parts, magnificently larger numbers of cirrus, and numerous segments. The morphological characteristics of T. macrodiscus collected in Korea have been described, and DNA barcode region representing cytochrome c oxidase subunit I was obtained for its molecular phylogenetic analysis.

The optically addressed and electrically addressed spatial phase only light modulators without pixelized structures have been developed. A sufficient phase modulation capability and a high diffraction efficiency of these devices are useful for practical applications.
