The objective of our study was to evaluate the dietary intakes and eating habit for seniors utilizing ten different social welfare centers in Seoul, Korea. The total number of subjects of this study was 543(male: 199, female: 344) of 60 years of age or older. The survey was performed through personal interview questionnaires from May 3rd to June 1st 2006. After assigning subjects to four categories based on family type, single, couple, joint family, and other, these categories were compared with the estimated total nutrient intakes and eating habit. Validity was assessed by comparison with 24-hour dietary recalls and dietary variety score(DVS). The results showed that senior in single family type was far lower than that of couple family type in terms of frequency of meal per day and intake of snacks. Dietary variety score represented that a single female with social security beneficiary showed the lowest variety score compared with other family type. The lunch meal provided by social welfare center turned out to be the most nutritious diet and had significant proportion of daily intakes in essential nutrients such as protein, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Taken together, the family type was a significant factor and the accompaniment is another effector on dietary pattern in the elderly. We strongly suggest that the current lunch program in welfare center should be expanded to breakfast meal, and furthermore the small commodity program is also needed to provide the elderly with meal for social communication.
This study investigated how Korean food is perceived within a healthy diet and what kinds of eating habits Korean people have. A Focus Group Interview (FGI) was conducted with participants who were experts on diet. Data were categorized into five groups using content analysis. categories were as follows: 1) Korean food and health assessment, 2) opinion on Koreans' current eating habits, 3) characteristics of Korean food, 4) comparison of Korean food in the past and present, 5) a plan for healthy diet. Results showed that a healthy diet should not only include a lot of vegetables, simple and unprocessed food as well as less spicy food, but that it should also be well-balanced nutritionally.
This study is to investigate the trend of researches on food and culture from 1990 to 2003. With a literary approach, this paper analyzes how many papers were published and what was the major research subject. We classified the journals published during this time into 10 different categories and we are to grasp a research trend. 1) Historical approach on the traditional food and food habit; 2) Globalization of Koran food; 3) Use and preparation for traditional food; 4) Table setting and table manner; 5) Provincial cuisine; 6) Traditional festive food or celebratory meal; 7) Religious food; 8) Fusion food; 9) Food and culture in foreign countries and food habit of Korean people living abroad; 10) Studies related with satins out. It was revealed that 268 papers(=ps) were published. Eating out was the most frequently reported subject(100 ps), followed by provincial cuisine(54 ps), use and preparation for traditional food(49 ps), food habit for foreign people and Korean people living abroad(22 ps). Researches on these 4 topics have been accelerated since the late half of 1990s. This reflects the social factors such as rapid growth of food service industry, settlement of local autonomy, popularization of leisure activities and accelerated introduction of foreign food and culture. Half of the studies on the eating out dealt with eating out behavior. And 30 papers were reports on the food service industry situations. More than half of the studies on the provincial cuisine(26 ps) were concentrated on digging out recipes. Studies on the use and preparation for traditional food were mainly about what kind of food and how often the food is used(17 ps). Kimchi was the most frequently studied food. There were 11 papers regarding food and culture in foreign countries. Most of the authors were historians or linguists. Food habit of Korean people living abroad were investigated in 7 papers. There was few studies on fusion food, table setting and table manner. This doesn't meet with increasing demand for specialized information in then fields. Researches on the traditional festive food or celebratory meal(5 ps) and religious food(9 ps) were negligible. Papers on the historical approach to the traditional food and food habit were limited(12 ps). Moreover, most of them were patchwork of existing literatures. Continuous researches to exploit the historical facts based on literary proof should be tried with patience. Otherwise, the papers will copy the hackneyed knowledge repeatedly. Globalization of Korean food means the development of Korean food for foreign people and export of them worldwide. Only 16 papers were reported on this subject, 14 of them were published after 2000, 8 of them were surveys on the foreigners' food preference. In order to get practical informations on what we develope and how we sell for the foreign customers, profound research on their food habit should be done.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence and to identify risk factors of overweight among preschool children in Korea. The study subjects were 750 children, aged 2-6, attending child care centers in Korea. A measurement of the height and weight of the children, as well as collection of wide range of variables including general characteristics, and potential factors related with dietary habit for children and their parents, were conducted. Overweight was defined based on more than 110% of ideal body weight. A logistic regression analysis was adopted to identify the factors associated with overweight. Subjects were classified into three categories according to the obesity index : underweight(PIBW〈90%, n=34), normal(90%$\leq$PIBW〈110%, n=577), and overweight(PIBW$\geq$110%, n=139). The overall prevalence of overweight and underweight of the subjects were 21.3% and 4.0% of the boys and 15.5% and 5.1% of the girls respectively. Parent's obesity was associated with a higher risk of overweight on girls. Subjects o the third quartile(girls) and fourth quartile(boys) of income level had a substantially higher risk of overweight than did those in the first quartile. Fast eating, overeating, and food prejudice were also associated with an increased risk of overweight. The results of a logistic regression analysis showed that the eating habits and food preferences of the children were the most influencial factors on overweight. These finding may imply the importance of early stage nutrition education on rational dietary habit to prevent prevailing obesity of preschool in Korea.
1. Objectives The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics about the Sasang Constitution of elementary school students based on the questions that have significant differences. 2. Methods 146 children who have visited Kang-Nam Kyung-Hee Oriental Hospital Sasang Constitution center from Mar. 2003 to May. 2005, were investigated through the questionnaires. These have the categories of 'Diseases and Symptoms', 'Physical characteristics', 'Eating Habit', and etc., were analyzed statistically. 3. Results (1) There are no specific questions that have significant differences about the diseases and symptoms according to the Sasang constitution. (2) In the category of the 'Physical Characteristics', significantly more Soeumin and Soyangin showed positive answer to the question, 'Thin in some degree' than Taeumin, and significantly more Taeumin showed positive answer to the question, 'Fat in some degree' than the other groups, and significantly more Taeumin showed positive answer to the question, 'Bulging belly' than the Soeumin. (3) In the category of 'Eating Habit', significantly more Soeumin, Soyangin answered positively to 'eating little food(light eating)' than Taeumin, and more Taeumin showed positive answer to 'a lot of food uptake' than the other groups, and significantly more Soeumin to 'eating slowly' than Taeumin, in contrast, significantly more Taeumin showed positive answer to 'eating food in haste and hurry' than the Soeumin, and significantly more Soeumin showed positive answer to the question, 'unwillingness to eat vegetable' than Soyangin, and significantly more Soeumin showed that to the question, 'unbalanced diet' than the other groups, significantly more Taeumin showed positive answer to 'preference for fatty food' than the other groups.
This study aimed to examine consumers' interest, preference, and consumption frequency of Kimchi in elementary school students in the fifth grade and their mothers living in Changwon city. In a comparison of eating habits, students exhibited better eating habits than their mothers (P<0.01). Though the mothers' levels, were higher than those of the students in the category of 'eat foods with a bit of salt usually', the students' levels were higher in the rest of the eating habit categories. The categories of 'like Kimchi', 'spicy taste', and 'appropriately spicy taste' got high levels. Among several kinds of Kimchi, both students and mothers preferred 'cabbage Kimchi' the most. Among various Kimchi foods, preferences for 'Kimchi pancake', 'fried rice with Kimchi', and 'tuna Kimchi soup', were highest in that order. The preferences differed between students and mothers in each category; mothers' preferences were significantly higher than those of students. However, in the rest of categories, except 'boiled kimchi and fish' and 'Kimchi and stir-fried spicy pork', students' preferences were higher than mothers' ones. Compared to their preferences, students' consumption frequencies were significantly higher than mothers' ones (P<0.01). There were positive correlations among students' eating habits, awareness of Kimchi, consumption frequency, and preference. For mothers, there were positive correlations not only between eating habits and awareness, but also between awareness and preference.

The purpose of this study is to explore the subjective perception of college students' Internet addiction by applying photovoice method, a participatory research method. The subjects of the study were nine university students at G University. The data were analyzed by orientation, photo collection, photo selection, contextualizing and codifying according to the general photo voice research procedure. As a result, 15 sub-categories were derived based on the meaning of Internet addiction, the effects of Internet addiction on life, and how to get out of Internet addiction. The perception of the meaning of Internet addiction was divided into five categories: 'loss of self-regulation', 'habit without exit', 'disconnection from the world', 'loss of me', and 'voluntary prison'. The effects of Internet addiction on life were 5 categories: 'health deterioration', 'social isolation', 'broken daily life', 'anonymous violence' and 'my discovery and life extension'. In terms of how to get out of internet addiction, 'self-looking', 'new hobbies', 'nearby', 'reality meetings', and 'forced blocking' were derived. It suggested the discussion about Internet addiction viewed by college students and the implications of constructing a counseling program that can help to use the Internet correctly.
Temporomandibular disorder(TMD) is described as a cluster of disorders characterized by pain in the preauricular area and/or the muscles of mastication; limitations or deviations in mandibular range of motion; and noises in the TMJ during mandibular function. The most common symptom in TMD patients is pain that is aggravated by chewing or other jaw function. These symptoms are appeared when the stimuli loaded in TMJ are over the physiologic tolerance. The primary goal in treatment of TMD is to alleviate pain and lor mandibular dysfunction. TMD treatment can be divided into 2 categories: reversible and irreversible methods. Reversible methods include medication, thermal therapy, habit modification, physical therapy, appliance therpy and arthrocentesis and lavage and irreversible methods include arthroscopic lysis, surgery, occlusal adjustment et al. It is widely accepted that reversible methods are ther first choice of treatments. However if reversible ones are not effective, irreversible methods are considered.
This study was conducted to provide current information on dietary behaviors and dish preferences of elementary school children and to suggest guidelines for proper dietary behaviors. To accomplish study objectives survey was executed using the questionnaire for 420 fifth and sixth grade school children, chosen from schools in Kangwha-gun and East River District of Seoul. A questionnaire largely consists of categories including general characteristics, dietary behavior and preferences of the subjects for some dishes. Results showed 30% of the subjects had breakfast irregularly. A majority of the subjects took Korean style dishes of cooked rice and soup for breakfast. fifty-eight percent of subjects had a regular meal time. Imbalanced diet(avoiding specific flood group thereby causing unbalance in nutrient intake) habit group was estimated to be 47.3%. Twenty one percent had a habit of overeating. In choosing the snack, taste was considered to be a more important factor than nutrition. Advertisement of the snack was shown to be one of the Important factors in selecting the snack. The girls were more concerned about weight control than the boys. Also the girls were likely to rely on the diet to control weight since they exercised only in the physical c1ass while the boys exercised regularly. Generally, children liked animal protein containing foods and the preference for vegetables was low. In order to improve overall dietary behavior, systematic nutrition education programs reflecting sex difference should be developed. Dish preference data would be very useful in selecting substitutive dish for the s[hoof lunch menu to improve imbalanced diet. (J Community Nutrition3(2) : 69∼76, 2001)

This study is intended to draw a scale for problem behaviors of young children. To achieve this, an empirical survey was carried out on experts from three groups of daycare center teachers, kindergarten teachers and early childhood education-majored professors. A total of 209 items were measured by the scale for young children's problem behaviors from the 1970s to now. The results showed that 96 of a total 209 items in 5 categories related to the scale for young children's problem behaviors were adopted as major items. Using these 96 major items in 5 categories, 17 out of 40 items in a peer relationship category, 13 out of 41 items in a development category, 20 out of 50 items in a fundamental habit category, 22 out of 38 items in a morality category, and 24 out of 40 items in an emotion category were adopted. Most items were adopted in the emotion category, whereas most items were rejected in the development category. Therefore, it is judged that their problem behaviors are caused mainly by anxiety, shrinking, unexpected behaviors, dependence on parents or teachers, and slow behaviors due to the latent negative emotions of young children at the developing stage.
