The purpose of this study is to explore the underlying causes of the development of private security in the United States. These include the increasing crime rates and fear of crime, the poor performance of public policing, the decentralization of political authority, the increase of mass private property, economic growth and increase of personal income, commodification of security, insurance companies' demand for tighter security and fear of litigation, and historical events such as World War I & II. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that no single factor would account for the growth of private security in the United States. In other words, the rapid growth of private security in the United States should be attributed to the interrelated influences of the factors given above. Finally, it might be the contribution of this study that the future development of private security in Korea would be guided by understanding the case of the United States because of the similarities of the developmental process in private security industry of two countries.

We report a case of 36-year-old woman with myasthenia gravis (MG) combined with mediastinal leiomyosarcoma (LMS) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS). She was admitted to ICU with the symptoms of acute onset headache, diplopia, ptosis, dysphagia, general weakness, and respiratory difficulty for several days. Physical examination revealed tachypnea, decreased breath sounds and dullness to percussion in right lower chest. Neurologic examination showed ptosis, diplopia, decreased gag reflexes, and generalized proximal weakness. Laboratory studies revealed increased serum acetylcholine receptor antibodies and positive Tensilon test. Chest CT showed a huge mass in the right middle mediastium but no evidence of thymic enlargement. Mediastinal LMS was diagnosed by ultrasound-guided needle biopsy. The myasthenic symptoms were fluctuated in spite og intravenous immunoglobulin, plasmapheresis, and corticosteroid. During therapy, SJS developed. She died 4 months after the onset of the myasthenic symptoms despite the chemotherapy for LMS.

The existing automation transfer systems such as AGV(Automated Guided Vehicle) have many problems (maintenance, accuracy, velocity, etc.) and wastes of a vast space and time. Hence we have suggested to LMTT(Linear Motor-based Transfer Technology). This paper deals with fundamental LMTT, and proposes a concept of mass reduction and propulsion control for LMTT when it is starting and reaching an object by using lift-force. By applying optimal controller and the repulsive lift forte in the LMTT, a large percent of vehicle weight is compensated and it reduces friction, then it needs less thrust force to propel the vehicle.

Recently, the size of glass panel is increased to $1250 mm{\times}1100 mm{\times}0.7 mm$, whose mass is 2.65 kg, which requires much stiffer robot structure. In addition to the high stiffness, the robot hands and wrists for glass panel handling should have miller surface finishing of its outer surface to prevent particles and dusts from adhering on the surface. The maximum height of the robot structure should not be larger than 1500 mm because other automated guided vehicles (AGV) and transfer equipments have been designed within this size limit. The difference of maximum deflections of the four ends of the hands before and after loading the glass panel should be less than 2.0 mm. In this work, the robot hands and wrists for handling large glass panel displays were designed based on the axiomatic design using the finite element method along with optimization routine.

The 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-induced tumor fluorescence is a useful intraoperative marker for the diagnosis and the detection of various malignancies, but its use in meningioma is only reported infrequently. In meningioma, a complete resection of the tumor mass is crucial for the prevention of recurrence and postoperative morbidities. Deep sylvian meningioma is a rare type of meningioma where complete tumor removal is complicated by its deep anatomical location and close involvement with the middle cerebral artery. From our experience, 5-ALA-mediated fluorescence facilitated a safe excision whilst preserving critical neurovascular structures. To our best knowledge, this is first report from use of 5-ALA in a deep sylvian meningioma.

We present a case of chondroblastoma in the thoracic vertebra. A 40-year-old patient with upper back pain and lower extremity weakness was admitted to our clinic. On neurological examination, the patient exhibited lower extremity spastic paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass infiltrating the 7th thoracic vertebra and its adjacent structures with concomitant compression of the epidural space. After right upper lung tuberculoma was resected through the transthoracic approach, T7 total corpectomy was done with anterior stabilization using a MESH cage and T7 rib bone graft. Two weeks after the first operation, remained part of vertebra was removed and posterior stabilization was performed using a pedicle screw fixation and cross linkage bar with the assistance of the navigation system. The final pathologic diagnosis of the vertebral lesion was benign chondroblastoma.

1-Acetyl-$\beta$-carboline was isolated as an anti-MRSA agent from the fermentation broth of a marine actinomycete isolated from marine sediment. The producing strain was identified to be Streptomyces sp. by phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence. The anti-MRSA agent was isolated by bioactivity-guided fractionation of the culture extract by solvent partitioning, ODS open flash chromatography, and purification with a reversed-phase HPLC. Its structure was elucidated by extensive 2D NMR and mass spectral analyses. Combination of 1-acetyl-$\beta$-carboline with ampicillin exhibited synergistic antibacterial activity against MRSA.

A mediastinal mass was aspirated by fluoroscope-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy in a 47 years old female patient. The first aspiration smears were not diagnostic, because of hemorrhagic background and cell paucity. On the second aspiration, the smears were composed of some clusters of benign epithelial cells in hemorrhagic back-ground. Cells were arranged in mostly solid sheets and tended to form glandular lumina in part. Their nuclei were round and vesicular. Nucleoli were not prominent. These findings were suggestive of benign glandular tissue, which was finally confirmed as mediastinal thyroid gland by open thoracotomy specimen.

Bacillus subtilis JW-1 was isolated from rhizosphere soil as a potential biocontrol agent of bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum. Seed treatment followed by a soil drench application with this strain resulted in >80% reduction in bacterial wilt disease compared with that in the untreated control under greenhouse conditions. The antibacterial compound produced by strain JW-1 was purified by bioactivity-guided fractionation. Based on mass spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data ($^1H$, $^{13}C$, $^1H-^1H$ correlation spectroscopies, rotating frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy, and heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation spectroscopy), the structure of this compound was elucidated as a cyclic lipopeptide composed of a heptapeptide (Gln-Leu-Leu-Val-Asp-Leu-Leu) bonded to a ${\beta}$-hydroxy-iso-hexadecanoic acid arranged in a lactone ring system.

Bioassay-guided fractionation of the MeOH extract from the sponge Discodermia calyx collected off the coast of Jeju Island, South Korea, led to the isolation of a polyketide, icadamide C (1), along with previously reported theopederin K (3). Structure elucidation was performed by a combination of high resolution mass and 2D-NMR (principally COSY, HMBC, HSQC, and NOESY) spectroscopy. Stereochemistry of compound 1 was determined as 2R*, 3R*, 6R*, 10S*, 11S*, 12R*, 13S*, 15R* and 2'S by NMR data and Marfey analysis. Isolated metabolites displayed potent cytotoxic activity against a small panel of five human solid tumor cell lines with ED50 values of less than 0.1 μg/mL.
