This study was performed to investigate the cell growth inhibitory effect of tissue cultured root of wild Panax ginseng C.A. Mayer (tcwPG). The human stomach carcinoma cell line, MKN 74, was incubated with 70% EtOH extract of tcwPG or Panax ginseng C.A. Mayer (PG) for 24 hrs. tcwPG inhibited cell growth at a concentration of $250{\mu}g/ml$. However, Panax ginseng extract did not inhibit cell growth at the same concentration. We also tested the ethyl acetate and $H_2O$ fractions of tcwPG. The inhibitory effect of the ethyl acetate fraction on cell proliferation in MKN 74 cells was more potent than that of the crude extract, and the inhibitory effect of the $H_2O$ fraction was less than that of the ethyl acetate fraction. When we separated tcwPG into polar and non-polar saponin fractions and then measured cell growth inhibition, the non-polar saponin in tcwPG exhibited cytotoxicity. To compare the effects of tcwPG on various cancer cell lines, we measured cytotoxicity in MKN 74 (stomach cancer cell line), SW 620 (colon cancer cell line) and PC 3 (prostate cancer cell line). All three cell lines showed cell growth inhibition, and the cell growth inhibitory effects were not quite different in the various cell lines. The non-polar saponins of tcwPG arrested PC 3 cells at G1-phase as did Panax ginseng.
Objectives: Lentinus edodes is an edible mushroom with a variety of beneficial effects such as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulatory activity. This study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial activities of Lentinus edodes extracts against oral-related bacteria. Methods: The antimicrobial activities of this extracts were investigated against S. anginosus, S. sobrinus, S. aureus, S. mutans, S. ratti, S. sanguinis, A. viscosus, A. naeslundii, and A. actinomycetemcomitans by the disc diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and growth inhibition. Results: Ethanol extracts had no antimicrobial activities, but acetone extracts showed antimicrobial activities against A. viscosus and A. actinomycetemcomitans and ethyl acetate extracts had effects against S. aureus, S. sanguinis, A. viscosus, and A. actinomycetemcomitans. Conclusions: The inhibitory effect of Lentinus edodes extracts was investigated on the growth of A. viscosus. Ethyl acetate and acetone extracts showed 90% and 77% inhibitory effect, respectively, against A. viscosus for 24 hrs. Ethyl acetate extracts had MIC of 25.0 mg/ml and acetone extracts showed MIC of >25.0 mg/ml.
To study the effect of the tetracycline-HCl on the growth of the rats, the author made a daily injection of tetracycline-HCl in the amount of 40mg/kg of body weight to the lactating mother and weanling rats for 7 days. Lactating and weanling young rats were killed at a week intervals and removed tibia and mandible from soft tissues. The effect of the tetracycline on the growth of rats were analysed from the weight, the length of tibia and the size of mandible. The results were as follows: 1. Tetracycline inhibited the growth of young rats. 2. Inhibitory effects were greater ill the weanling group than the lactating group. 3. The inhibitory effect was marked just after the injection of tetracycline-HCl in body weight and after a week in mandible and tibia. 4. The inhibitory effect of growth nab continued for 2-3 weeks in body weight and 3-4 weeks in tibia and mandible. 5. In growth of mandible, the antero-posterior growth was more inhibited than the vertical.

Purpose : In this study, to prove the antibacterial effect of Disocorea batatas, which is widely used for food, and to confirm the growth inhibitory effect, the antibacterial activity against L. gasseri, S. mutans, and P. gingivalis was verified. Based on this, it is intended to verify the utility as a preventive and therapeutic composition for dental caries and periodontal disease. Methods : RAW 264.7 cells were used to verify the cell survival rate and NO (Nitric Oxide) inhibitory effect on Disocorea batatas ethanol extract (DBEE). In order to verify the antibacterial effect against L. gasseri, S. mutans, and P. gingivalis, concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 ㎎/㎖ of DBEE were used and measured by the disk diffusion method. In order to confirm the growth inhibitory effect, the absorbance was measured at 600 ㎚ at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours using the liquid medium dilution method, and the growth inhibitory effect was measured compared to the control group. Results : The cell viability for DBEE was 91 % at 50 ㎎/㎖, and there was no cytotoxicity. The NO production inhibitory effect was shown from 10 ㎍/ml, and the higher the concentration, the greater the inhibitory effect. As for the antimicrobial effect using the disk diffusion method, the higher the concentration, the higher the antibacterial effect. At 125 ㎎/㎖ and 250 ㎎/㎖, S. mutans and L. gasseri showed high antimicrobial activity, and at 500 ㎎/㎖, the antibacterial effect was higher in L. gasseri. The growth inhibitory effect in DBEE was concentration-dependent as the higher the concentration, the higher the growth inhibitory effect, and all of them began to show growth inhibitory effects from 6 hours. Conclusion : Considering that it is widely used as an edible and medicinal material, Disocorea batatas has shown the potential to be used as a substance to prevent and alleviate dental caries and periodontal diseases, and it is believed that further research can be applied to oral health care products.
The inhibitory effects of various extracts from Chinese pepper on the mutagenicity and the growth of MG-63 human osteosarcoma cells were studied. Chinese pepper was extracted with methanol and then the methanol extract was further fractionated by using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol. The methanol extract of Chinese pepper revealed the strong antimutagenic activity on the aflatoxin B1(AFB1) and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) in Ames mutagenicity test and SOS chromotest.
In the present study, we have evaluated cytotoxic effects of Taraxaci Herba extract on human skin melanoma cells. The light microscopic study showed morphological changes AG-NOR (argyrophylic nucleolar organizer region) by silver chloride stain, and glycoprotein by PAS reaction of the treated cells. Disruptions in cell organelles were determined by SRB assay.
To study allelopathic porential of naturally occurring substances emitted from Pinus koraiensis, the effects of water exrracts and volatile substances of the tree on callus induction and bacterial culture were examined. The induction and growth of callus were inversely proportional to the concentration of the extracts and of the essential oils supplemnted to Murashige and Skoog's media. However, low concentration(5μl/l) of essential oil promoted callus growth. In germiculture of several bavteria, the extracts of Pinus koraiensis markedly showed the inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. It was, therefore, confirmed that the KDICical substances of Pinus koraiensis tree clearly showed that biological toxic activity at high concentrations.
The antimicrobial effects of the natural flavonoids kaempferol, quercetin, apigenin, and naringenin as well as a novel flavonoid 7-O-butyl naringenin against the growth of four meat-born Staphylococcus aureus strains were evaluated. First, the flavonoids were screened for inhibitory effects against the growth of each strain using the paper disc diffusion method. Second, the growth inhibitory effects of flavonoids that showed antimicrobial activity were measured using the microplate method. Third, the bactericidal effects of flavonoids were evaluated in a 0.8% (w/v) NaCl solution. All flavonoids showed bacteriostatic effects at >20 mM. Among the flavonoids studied, quercetin was more effective than the others tested. However, the inhibitory effect of 7-O-butyl naringenin on growth of S. aureus KCCM 32395 was greater than that of quercetin at the same concentration. Additionally, 7-O-butyl naringenin exhibited significant bactericidal effects at >25 ${\mu}M$. When bacterial cells were examined using scanning electron microscopy, it appeared that the S. aureus membranes were damaged or morphologically changed when treated with quercetin and 7-O-butyl naringenin at 200 ${\mu}M$.
The growth responses of six bacterial strains exposed to materials extracted from turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizomes were examined using impregnated paper disk agar diffusion. Methanol extracts of turmeric rhizomes exhibited strong inhibitory activity against Clostridium perfringens and weak inhibitory activity toward Escherichia coli at 5 mg/disk. However, in tests conducted with Bifidobacterium adolescentis, B. bifidum, B. longum, and Lactobacillus casei, the methanol extract showed no inhibitory response. The biologically active constituent isolated from the turmeric rhizomes extracts was characterized as ar-turmerone using various spectroscopic analyses including EI-MS and NMR. The responses varied according to the dosage, chemicals, and bacterial strain tested. At 2 and 1 mg/disk, ar-turmerone strongly inhibited the growth of C. perfringens and moderately inhibited the growth of E. coli without any adverse effects on the growth of four lactic acid-bacteria. Of the commercially available compounds originating from turmeric rhizomes, curcumin exhibited strong and moderate growth inhibition against C. perfringens at 2 and 1 mg/disk, respectively, and weak growth inhibition against E. coli at 1 mg/disk. However, little or no activity was observed for borneol, 1,8-cineole, and sabinene against all six bacteria strains tested. The observed inhibitory activity of the turmeric rhizome-derived curcumin and ar-turmerone against C. perfringens and E. coli demonstrate one of the important pharmacological activities of turmeric rhizomes.

The present study was undertaken to elucidate the antibacterial spectrum of L. casei phage type $J_1$ strain isolated from a fermented milk product against pathogenic enteric bacteria. Growth inhibitory effects and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of culture supernatants of L. casei grown in MRS broth were measured by both plate culture method and microplate broth dilution technique against Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, Shigella dysenteriae, enterpathogenic E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The MRS broth culture of L. casei gave a similar extent of growth inhibitory effects against S. typhi, S. typhimurium, S. flexneri, S. dysenteriae, E. coli, K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa, respectively. 2. The inhibitory effects of L. casei culture were observed either in whole broth culture or in culture supernatant, but neither the bacterial suspension nor the neutralized culture supernatant showed such as antibacterial activities. 3. The MIC titres of the culture supernatants were ${\log_2}5$ to ${\log_2}6$, whereas those of the neutralized culture supernatant dropped markdely to ${\log_2}2$ to ${\log_2}3$. These results indicated that major portion of growth inhibitory effects of MRS broth culture of L. casei against enteric bacterial pathogens was possibly due to the acids produced, and minor portion to other antibacterial substances.
